How about some good news to begin with? Zara is a Spanish chain, and there are branches all over the Iberian peninsula. What’s more, the prices are lower than elsewhere!

  • A trip to Barcelona offers a great excuse to replenish your wardrobe… the bargain prices at Zara mean it would be rude not to!

Zara in Barcelona: our top 3

Zara, Plaça Catalunya: our favourite

Located on one side of Plaça Catalunya, this branch has everything you might want. It’s new, spacious, light, elegant and well-organised… even people who claim to be allergic to shopping have been known to enjoy visiting!

The building which houses the store is simply superb: look up and admire the magnificent Art Nouveau cupola. Not bad!

The shop extends over three floors, with womenswear on the ground and first floors, and the children and menswear collections on the first and second floors. Each floor has its own block of spacious and well-lit changing rooms.

  • The best thing about this store is the space! There are wide alleyways between racks, making it easy and pleasant to get around. Shopping doesn’t have to be a battle!

Where? Plaça de Catalunya, 5 (opposite FNAC) – Métro Plaça Catalunya (L1-L3-L6 and L7)
When? Monday – Saturday, 10am – 9.30pm

Zara, Passeig de Gràcia

The Passeig de Gràcia

is one of Barcelona’s biggest and most prestigious thoroughfares. Masterpieces by Gaudí (Casa Batlló and La Pedrera) rub shoulders with luxury boutiques and major international chain stores – a great location for a Zara store!

The vast ground store is home to the bulk of the womenswear collection and to the children’s department. The basement houses the TRF collection (Zara’s “younger” label) and a few changing rooms – worth a shot if the changing rooms on the main floor are all occupied. Menswear is located upstairs, on the first floor.

  • This branch of Zara gets particularly busy, given it’s in a major tourist area. We recommend visiting early(ish) in the morning if you can!

Where?

Passeig de Gràcia, 16 – Metro: Placa Catalunya (L1-L3-L6 and L7) or Passeig de Gràcia (L2 – L3 and L4)
When? Monday – Saturday, 10am – 9.30pm

Zara, Portal de l’Àngel

The Avinguda del Portal de l’Àngel is a pedestrian street which runs off Passeig de Gràcia, after Plaça Catalunya. It’s a major shopping destination, packed with clothing and accessory stores.

The Zara on Portal de l’Àngel is narrow, but spread over several floors: womenswear on 0, 1 and 2, menswear  on 3, childrenswear in the basement.

  • There’s a huge choice of womenswear and there are changing rooms on each floor, which helps to keep the queues down.
  • And that’s not all – there’s another Zara store a few doors down! We haven’t been to visit yet – it was undergoing renovations at the time of writing – so we’ll leave you to discover it on your own.

Where? Avinguda del Portal de l’Àngel, 32-34 – Metro: Plaça Catalunya (L1-L3-L6 and L7)
When? Monday – Saturday, 10am – 9.30pm

Shopping in Barcelona: useful information

  • There’s also a Zara Home on the Passeig de Gràcia, which stocks the brand’s home furnishing and décor lines. You’ll also find branches of the other main Inditex brands, including Uterqüe, Pull & Bear, Oysho, Massimo Dutti, Bershka and Stradivarius.
  • For bargain-hunting, try some of Barcelona’s many outlet stores or La Roca Village, which offers sale prices all year round.
  • You won’t find a specific Zara outlet, but Lefties offers pieces from previous Zara collections at bargain prices.

Zara raises prices and plans to return to Russia

Spain news
·
March 16, 2022

03/16/2022. Zara raises the prices of . The Inditex Group, which owns brands such as Zara, Massimo Dutti, Bershka and Oysho, ended 2021 with a net profit of 3,243 million
dollars, which is almost three times more than in 2020, which was the most difficult year in its history due to the pandemic.

Turnover reached 27,716 million, up 36% from last year, according to data released this Wednesday. With these results, led by Pablo Isla as president, the company
approaches pre-pandemic levels and believes that the coronavirus crisis that hit the world and caused the closure of a large part of the corporation’s stores for several months has been overcome.

However, the current ferocious inflation, exacerbated by the onset of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, forced the leadership of the textile giant to reconsider its pricing policy – and not in a pleasant way for
consumer side.

Inditex declined to quantify the potential impact on results of store closures in Russia and Ukraine due to the war, while announcing that it plans to raise prices by around 5% globally.
and by 2% in the case of Spain.

Annual results do not yet reflect the impact of store closures in Russia and Ukraine announced on March 12 due to military conflict. Sales, as Inditex surged this Wednesday, continued
grow strongly even in the Russian market at the beginning of the year. “Fiscal 2022 is off to a good start with the Spring/Summer collections being very well received by our customers.

In-store and online sales in constant currency from February 1 to March 13 are 33% higher than in 2021 and 21% higher than all-time highs in 2019, before the pandemic. During this period, sales in
The Russian Federation and Ukraine accounted for approximately 5 percentage points of sales growth, ”the company explains. At that time, shops in Russia were closed for only a week. In addition, when comparison is made
constant exchange rate, this also does not reflect the collapse of the ruble.

With regard to Russia, company spokesman Garcia Maceiras indicated that the suspension is forced and temporary, and that the main goal is to return to work “as soon as this allows
situation”. When asked if the Russian authorities contacted Inditex after the decision to terminate its activities, the executive branch did not go into details. “We are well aware of
situation and we will assess what to do based on the subsequent development of the conflict,” he said.

Excellent Example of Gaudi Design

Apr 2023 • Couples

We booked tickets a couple days in advance. We had read a lot about this so we just walked around on our own. We did not do the audio tour, nor did we do the night tour. There was a long line so do plan in advance. It was easy to get around as the staff guides you through if you do not do the audio tour. An elevator takes you to the apartment first, then you go to the attic, and finally to the roof. There are stairs back down but being “older” we were allowed to take the elevator back down to the ground level to exit. The apartment is interesting to see how someone lived their back when the building was new. People actually live in the other apartments. The attic has models and prototypes of Gaudi’s projects. The rooftop is amazing, crowded, and offers excellent views of Barcelona. Keep in mind that walking around may not be easy for all as there are steps all along the roofline. Nothing is totally flat. A definite must if you are a Gaudi fan.

Residential Gaudi

Our 15 year old son suggested this tour and I was so glad he did. It was fascinating to see a residential home designed by Gaudi and the audio guide was excellent in explaining the details. The attic area explored Gaudi’s design and build process and the rooftop was spectacular.

Not my favourite Gaudi property

This was very busy even though it was only April.
Another fine example of Gaudi’s work but we were a little disappointed with the interior as most of the tour is given over to the small apartment and then a gallery explaining Gaudi’s work rather than the real thing.

The rooftop was particularly crowded and alas full of visitors trying to get that unique Instagram moment! One young man even shouted at me for getting in the way of his moment!

Worth a visit if you enjoy Gaudi’s work but be prepared for the multitudes!

Thank you for dedicating your time to comment on La Pedrera! Regarding the fact that the visit is very crowded, it is true that we have many visitors, being a Gaudí building and having the Plensa exhibition, there is a large audience who wishes to visit us, despite this, we work to make the visit smooth. The main hours of the day are usually the ones that host the most people, so we recommend the first hours of the day or the last.

Another seminal Gaudi. The apartment is amazing

May 2022 • Couples

Most people come to see the chimneys and the roof and don’t get me wrong they are great. The chimneys make me laugh as it looks like someone abandoned a company medieval soldiers up there. Of course the whole building is an art nouveau fantasy. The part I absolutely loved the best was the apartment still laid out as it would have been at the time of construction with all the furniture fixtures and fittings. It was a real window into life back then and how people lived in this amazing apartment. I thought it was so interesting and unlike Casa Batlló it felt real and not just a work of art but a real living functioning place that just happened to be a work of art. I totally loved it even more than those areas that people usually talk about. Give it a go and I think you will like it.

Worth Experiencing! Gaudi’s work is amazing!!

We really enjoyed the head phones and the audio when entering each room. The hard part was not being able to get good pictures because it was overcrowded.

Great design work!

The design is unbelievable. Do not skip the roof or Attic. The views from the roof were incredible. The “skip the line” doesn’t actually mean you don’t have to wait in a long line, but wait patiently and the staff does a pretty good job at asking who is booked for which times and groups people. We were booked for 1:30, got there at 1:15. We finally entered about 1:45. If you don’t buy tickets in advance, you cannot walk up and purchase tickets.

Unusual architecture and tour

What a cool tour this was. We did the virtual tour first and learned about the Milas. Then we toured the building. The architecture was fascinating and my favorite place was the attic. The rooftop had amazing views and this was well worth the price of admission. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone visiting Barcelona fir the first time.

This is the most amazing place to visit in Barcelona. I recommend doing it at the start of a visit so kids learn about Gaudì before they see other important works by Gaudì like Park Guell Amd Sagrada Familia. The tour was fantastic ! Our teens loved it.

Very impressive but overcrowded

Really enjoyed our visit to La Padera. The audio narrative was really interesting and enhanced the tour. It is very grand and imposing. Rooms felt very much like a museum but the ‘attic’ was very special – really beautiful design. The roof top was great but to be honest just too many people up there at one which significantly reduced the feel of what would have been a really brilliant experience.
If I was to choose between Casa Batllo and La Pedera, I would go for Casa Batllo – very magical

La Pedrera – Milà House (Casa Milà) in Barcelona – photo and description, location, reviews After finishing work on it, the architect threw himself into the construction of the Sagrada Familia, abandoning other projects.

It is interesting that initially the townspeople did not appreciate it, jokingly calling the house “the quarry” (La Pedrera). Today, Casa Mila is a universally recognized masterpiece, which is included in the TOP of the main attractions of Barcelona and annually receives about a million visitors a year.

History of the house

Casa Mila was built between 1906 and 1910 by the textile magnate and politician Pere Mila y Camps. In 1969, the Art Nouveau house was recognized as a national monument of Spain, and in 1984 it became the first building of the 20th century to be protected by UNESCO. Now the building houses a cafe, an apartment-museum and an exhibition hall where temporary exhibitions are organized. One of the main highlights of the building is the rooftop terrace, where you can see many different sculptures.

Casa Mila Architecture

The stone structure looks extraordinary thanks to its smooth curves and decorative elements. Together, all this creates the impression that the house is in motion. The design of the building was innovative – it used architectural techniques unique for that time. Gaudi mentioned that he was inspired by the sea and rocks for the asymmetric supports and facade of the house. The architect created movable interior partitions, thanks to which the premises could be rebuilt, as well as a unique ventilation system and an underground garage. Elevators in the house appeared a little later. Ornate steel gratings were used to decorate the balconies. Inside, there are three patios created for additional lighting. The walls of the house are decorated with colorful paintings on mythological themes.

District/quarter: Eixample

Walking through the magnificent Plaza of Catalonia, you find yourself in the newest area called Eixample, which literally translates as “increase, spread”, and this is immediately becomes clear thanks to the wider streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this spacious area, Passeig de Gràcia, is famous for its numerous shops of the best designers from all over the world. The glitz and opulence of this quarter leave little room for competitors, and the best examples of this are the comfortable and luxurious five-star hotels that coexist with divine creations in modern style from recognized geniuses of world architecture, such as Gaudí and Montaner.

    Cool gothic

    May 2018 • For two

It is a pity that you can just go into the mansion and look at the beautiful stairs and the first floor. They don’t let us through. But, living for almost a month on Paseo Gracia, we passed by this neo-Gothic house with a name close to the Russian heart many times. It was built by Manuel Comas i Thos in 1901-05, when the Eixample was densely built up with mansions in the Art Nouveau style. A real fabulous medieval North European Gothic with typical rose-windows, an elegant inlaid staircase and powerful columns with flowers in the hall. Only the stained-glass window on the ceiling is purely modern and very beautiful.

Angels barcelona: program / àngels barcelona

Convent dels Àngels | MACBA Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona

The Convent was built to house a community of Dominican Tertiary Sisters, which had settled in the land adjoining the Verge dels Àngels chapel in 1497. The actual temple was built between 1562 and 1566. The church was designed by the master Bartomeu Roig in Gothic style, at the height of the sixteenth century.

The complex has a simple façade, with a Renaissance style portal, and two rooms: a gothic nave, which housed the inner rooms and the adjoining Peu de la Creu chapel from 1568-1569, and is the only chapel built in the Renaissance era remaining in Barcelona.

The Convent dels Àngels complex is currently listed as part of Barcelona’s Architectural, Historic and Artistic Heritage. It includes the sixteenth century church and convent. In the eighties, the convent and its surroundings were extensively renovated as part of an urban renewal process that was part of the project “Del Liceu al Seminari”. The restoration, led by the architects Lluís Clotet, Carles Díaz and Ignacio Paricio, added some new elements to the complex: a buttressed building built onto the chapel to reinforce the church, and the mediating building that faces the façade and completes the Plaça dels Àngels.

MACBA Study Centre

Since 2007, the MACBA Study Centre takes up part of the convent complex: specifically, the third floor of the gothic nave and the mediating building that was built in 1992 and rounds off the western facade of Plaça dels Àngels.

The total floor area of the spaces used by the MACBA is 2,733 m2, distributed through the basement, the ground floor and the upper floors. The project to adapt the Study Centre space was also designed by the architects Lluís Clotet and Ignacio Paricio.

The space in this building is structured into an elongated, narrow shape, and four alcoves that organise the building envelope and are reflected in the form of five arches in the façade. The entrance stairs are located at each end of the building. The reception area is on the ground floor, along with a space set aside for activities and exhibition. On the first floor houses classrooms that are fully equipped with audiovisual equipment, and office space for seminars and teachers. The second floor contains office space and an area for the Archive, and the third floor houses the Library, lit by a skylight. This timber and metal structural element is extraordinarily slender, endowing the space with a quality that contrasts with the walls that hold it up. In the gothic nave, which houses the reading room, the ceiling is resolved using the same type of trusses. Part of this third floor is shared with the FAD, the institution that takes up the remainder of the floors in this part of the building.

La Capella

Capella MACBA, which comprises the church, the Capella del Peu de la Creu chapel and the adjoining spaces, was transferred to the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona in May 2003, so that it could be used as an exhibition space. This required a further renovation, in order to optimise its conditions. The church covers 350 m2 at ground floor. It consists of a single nave in five sections, with side chapels between buttresses and a polygonal apse. A false transept created in the 1986 refurbishment extends the final section and includes the stairs for accessing the choir on one side, and an auxiliary exit door on the other.

The Capella del Peu de la Creu, which has a floor area of 150 m2, is adjacent to the church and was also built in the sixteenth century, although in this case it was built in the Renaissance style. The chapel was expanded and reinforced during restorations in 1992. The refurbishments included adding new building on the side, to buttress the chapel, which currently houses municipal public service offices. A die-shaped lobby was also built, which is linked to the chapel and the buttress. The upper floor, with a 400 m2 floor area, contains the choir, the installations room and the outdoor terraces.

Background information when reading The Angel’s Game

A Short History of Barcelona

This article relates to The Angel’s Game

Barcelona, Spain’s second largest city after Madrid, is the capital of the
Autonomous Community of Catalonia in the North East of Spain (map) and a major economic center for finance, business, media, arts and international trade.  Its location on the Mediterranean coast brings it mild, humid winters and warm, dry summers.  With a population of 1.6 million it is the eleventh most populated city in the European Union and the sixth-most populous urban area (after Paris, London, Ruhr Area, Madrid and Milan) with almost 5 million people living in the Barcelona metropolitan area.

Legend has it that the city was founded by either the mythical Hercules, or around 250 BC by the Carthaginian general Barcas (father of Hannibal).  The Romans fortified the town as a military camp in about 15 BC.   As the western Roman Empire collapsed, the Germanic Visigoths grew in strength and, by
the fifth century, had conquerored most of Gaul (France) and Iberia (Spain) including Barcelona.  Three centuries later the dominance of the Visigoths had been replaced by the might of the Moors (North African people who were early
converts to Islam).  But not for long – in 801, Louis, son of Emperor Charlamagne, reconquered the area and it became part of a buffer zone, known as
the Spanish Marches (map),
which separated the Iberian Peninsula, controlled by the Moors, from the Frankish Kingdom which extended across much of Western Europe (map).

By the middle of the 12th century, the Counts of Barcelona had expanded their
territory to include all of Catalonia including the ancient kingdom of Aragon.  The territory known as the Crown of Aragon, with its center in Barcelona, reached its height in the 13th century having conquered Sicily, large chunks of Southern Italy and Athens in Greece.   Barcelona’s power declined in the mid 15th century when Isabella of Castille married Ferdinand of Aragon which, after considerable infighting, eventually united the majority of Spain under one monarch.  Their daughter, Catherine of Aragon would later marry into the English House of Tudor (thus validating, in the eyes of European royalty, the rather dubious origins of the Tudor dynasty).  The subsequent annulment of their 24-year marriage by her husband, Henry VIII, led to England breaking away from the Catholic Church and a souring of relations between Spain and England which continued through various wars and a number of centuries.

Barcelona Angels. Where can you see the Angels of Barcelona? Myths and legends about the angels of Barcelona

Barcelona Angels

The largest number of angels per square meter can be seen above the main entrance to the Cathedral of Barcelona. 76 angels occupied the four arches of the Cathedral. There is a street in Barcelona
Angela, Angel Square, their image can be seen almost more often than the image of St. George – the patron saint of Catalonia …. Let’s talk about angels.

Perhaps the most famous and most photographed angel is the Angel of Death (Kiss of Death) at the Poblenou Cemetery in Barcelona (Cementerio de Pueblonuevo). Located at:
Av. d’Icària, – Avinguda Ikaria without a number. We can include a visit to this “quiet corner” in one of our
excursions.

Of course, one can argue – what kind of angel is this – Death? But if the word “angel” is translated from Greek as – “messenger, herald” – or “a being that communicates the will of God and possesses
supernatural abilities”, then our graveyard character is quite suitable for the title of an angel.

Angel of Death. (Kiss of Death) Barcelona
Barcelona. Angel Square

Place de l’Angel in Barcelona was formerly known as Wheat Square – grain was traded here. But in 978, when it was decided to transfer the relics of St. Eulalia to the Cathedral, it was
here, in front of the fortress gates of Barcelona, the magnificent procession slowed down: the relics became so heavy that even a dozen strong men could not move the stretcher decorated with flowers.

But suddenly an angel descended from heaven. He pointed his finger at the relics and glared menacingly at one of the monks involved in the procession. It turned out. that this monk broke off his finger from the relics and hid it in
deep pockets of the cassock.

Under the indignant murmur of the townspeople and priests, the monk returned the stolen goods and the Angel allowed the procession to move on.
The square was renamed Angel Square, the gate to the city – the gate of Santa Eulalia, and in 1618 a sculpture of an Angel was installed here, which, unfortunately, has not been preserved. So now if
look at the facade of one of the houses on the square, you can find a new sculpture with a menacing look and a rebuking finger.

Barcelona AngelsBarcelona Angels

Portal of the Angel (Portal de l’Angel) – this is where one of the main gates of Barcelona has been located since the 13th century. At that time they were called Portal dels Orbs – Portal of the blind.
The road outside the gate connected Barcelona with the city of Gràcia. These gates opened before anyone else – at about three in the morning and closed last.

Beggars crowded here around the clock, because at night carts with handicraft goods began to leave the city. But from early morning, carts of peasants with food drove into the city, and where
there are many people – there they give alms more often. In our time, it is this fact, and even a suitable climate, that has bred homeless people and beggars throughout the territory of the old city – Barsino – and splashed out,

my God, homeless people by vocation, and not by the fact of poverty and lack of money in the tourist expanses of Eixample – the modern part of Barcelona.

But let’s go back to ancient times…. The peasants, having sold and unloaded the contents of the carts, still remained in the city to clean the toilets and load the carts with excrement – the best fertilizer for their fields.

The angel who gave the portal its name appeared in the flesh to Sant Vicente Ferrera, exactly at the moment when Ferrera crossed the gate line, entering the city. The angel reported that Barcino was under his
security. In 1466, the sculpture was installed near the gate.

Barcelona. Angel Portal

Now its copy of 1955 can be found on the wall of the bank at the very beginning of the avenue from the side of Plaza Catalunya. Barcelona Guardian Angel still guards the city and the area.

Curiosities of Barcelona. Angels

The figurines of these two angels completely destroy our idea of the purpose of the Angels. Perhaps when they grow up, they will learn to play musical instruments,
Cupid’s arrows, sprinkle rose petals on a charitable path . . yes, you never know what is included in the winged duties.

In the meantime, they are learning to fly, and to make the flight easier, one angel inflates the other through the well …. (yes, in the Middle Ages, stonecutters had strange fantasies)

Barcelona Angels Barcelona Angels. Excursions in Gothic

Other city angels peek at us through the stained glass windows of old buildings or churches.

Barcelona Angels. Barcelona Angels. Excursions in Gothic

The main task of the Barcelona angels, scattered throughout the city in large numbers, is to maintain coats of arms (often – not from the birth of ancient families, but freshly baked, like the coat of arms).

Barcelona Angels. Gothic quarter Angels of Barcelona. Gothic Quarter.

The angels of the sacred mountain of Montserrat – four-winged – means cherubs, those who pour out wisdom. Perhaps that is why they have a place in
behind the altar chapel of the temple of nan Montserrat, in a place where people ask the Virgin Mary for a wash, each for his own. They remind that it is not necessary to ask for trifles, but to approach this action wisely.

The angels of the Sagrada Familia trumpet the Apocalypse (left) and play musical instruments (right) rejoicing at the birth of Christ. Everything has its time.

If you come closer to the Sagrada Familia, you will surely be able to see that the faces of the musician angels have oriental characteristics – a narrow slit of the eyes. They took their places on
facade after the death of Antonio Gaudi, and the figures were sculpted by the Japanese sculptor Ittsuro Sotoo – a man who arrived in Barcelona, saw a miracle under construction, became an assistant and colleague of Gaudi and
left in Barcelona.

Great hotel and location

June 2022

We chose this hotel because of its location. The hotel is centrally located with easy access to the metro and bus tour. We found a great tapas restaurant (Andurina, C Comtal 30) 5 minutes walk from the hotel. The hotel staff were very attentive, helpful, suggesting restaurants and attractions. The pool and courtyard were the most enjoyable, especially after a day of sightseeing in the intense heat. Be sure to visit Parc Güell and the Familia Sagrada!

description and interior, location and how to get there

House of Vicens in Barcelona.

Magnificent house Vicens in Barcelona – one of the creations of Antonio Gaudí and a real decoration of the Catalan capital.

This is the first significant work of the great architect, and since 2005, Casa Vicens is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Let’s see what is interesting about the attraction and why it is worth visiting.

Contents

Construction history of the house

The building was built between 1883 and 1885. The major industrialist Manuel Vicens became the customer of the project.

The magnate decided to build the most beautiful residential building in Barcelona with a magnificent garden for his family.

The implementation of the plan was entrusted to the 30-year-old Gaudí, whom almost no one knew then.

Since Vicens was engaged in the production of ceramic tiles and bricks, when completing the order, the master mainly used these materials, as well as raw stone.

Until 2014, Casa Vicens was a private residence and could only be viewed from the outside.

But after the acquisition of the building by the Morabanc group, it was decided to open the architectural monument to everyone, which happened on November 16, 2017.

Four and a half million euros were allocated for the restoration of the building and its transformation into a museum.

The four-storey Casa Vicens Museum.

Architectural solutions

Externally, the building is a four-story ensemble, made in the style of modernism.

Thanks to the presence of turrets, bay windows and unusual balconies, it looks very impressive.

The tile finish with floral patterns also looks nice.

Inside Casa Vicens there is also a lot of interesting things:

  • lobby with elegant stained-glass windows;
  • dining room with wooden interior, decorated with 32 paintings by local painter Francesc Torrecasana;
  • richly decorated smoking room, decorated with ceramics, stucco and papier-mâché;
  • original ceilings depicting birds and palm branches.

Gaudi was sure that nature created everything the artist needed, and actively used its images in his work.

In addition to temporary and permanent exhibitions, the garden and the panoramic terrace are available for viewing.

There is free Wi-Fi, left-luggage offices and a bookstore, and after the tour, check out the cafe at the museum.

When Antonio Gaudí was graduating from an architectural school, its leader said the following about the young architect:

“We issue a diploma either to a fool or a genius. Time will show”.

Admiring Casa Vicens, you will be convinced once again: the great inventor turned out to be a genius.

Casa Vicens – a creation of Gaudí

Casa Vicens was built by the architect Antonio Gaudí as a private residence commissioned by the brick and tile manufacturer Manuel Vicens.

It currently adorns Carolines Street, being one of the most striking sights in Barcelona (Barcelona).

Casa Vicens joins the UNESCO World Heritage List.

House of Vicens is often included in Barcelona sightseeing tours, as its non-standard appearance with unusual decorative elements delights the human mind with its brightness and beauty.

Due to the large queues at the entrance, we advise you to buy tickets for the House of Vicens in advance. You can do this online at the link on the official ticket platform.

History of Casa Vicens

Gaudí received an order to build a house from a wealthy customer in the year he obtained his diploma as an architect – 1878. Although the building plan was made in a fairly short time, construction began only in 83 of the 19th century and ended five years later. Guided by the wishes of Manuel Vicens himself and the ideas of Gaudi, it was decided to make a residence for the summer. For this reason, the garden was given special attention. The area allocated for the construction of the House of Vicens was insignificant, but due to the transfer of the building to the background, the garden was visually expanded.

If you look at the not so early projects of Antoni Gaudi, unlike them, the House of Vincennes had a more primitive building plan. An almost regular quad is taken as the basis of the house. And only the smoking lounge and the dining room go beyond it. Each floor plan is very similar to each other.

But, despite the simplicity of the layout of the premises, they perfectly combine unusual decorative elements. Of particular interest and attention of tourists are:

  • carved balconies
  • unusual façade projections
  • graceful turrets
  • elegant bay windows
  • and, of course, the fantastic color scheme of the entire building, which is not inferior even to Casa Batlló, a later work of the architect

Thanks to these features, the creator was able to recreate the illusion of volume using simple forms.

Decoration of the House of Vicens

In the construction of the House of Vicens, Gaudí used raw stone. But the genius skillfully combined it with brick material and polychrome tiles, thereby expressing respect for the activities of his customer. In the design of the facade of the house, a chess-floral ornament is clearly visible.

On the elements of the decorative design of the facade of the House of Vicens, there are images of flowers that are very common in the city gardens and parks of Barcelona. Skillfully using elements of the urban flora, the architect was able to skillfully integrate the tall mansion into the general view, making it an extension of the garden that opens up to the view at the entrance to the residence.

The design of the House of Vicens, as well as the decorative elements, indicate the influence of oriental culture. The decor is in the Arabic-Spanish Mudéjar style. This is especially noticeable in the design of the turrets on the roof, which resemble the domes of mosques.

Vicens House was built in modern style. Gaudí decided this way due to the fact that he wanted to get a contrast with nearby buildings. At that time they were performed in eclecticism.

All elements of the residence at the house of Vicens form a whole architectural ensemble. Even the smallest detail matters. An unusual solution for the design of gratings, gates, balconies and interior decoration create an overall unique picture.

In 1925, the Vicens family reconstructed the site. Carolines Street was widened, so part of the garden had to be cut down. Also, over time, part of the fence, the rotunda fountain with a cascade were demolished.

Casa Bruno – Sustainable House Day

This profile is written and maintained by the homeowner, architect, or builder.

We believe strongly in the principles of sustainability and liked the idea of having underground water storage as well as hydronic underfloor heating.
Other principles that were attractive included reverse brick veneer construction, solar passive design in general. Gardening is a passion and to compliment the sustainable house we wanted to create a low maintenance and low water use garden.

The Rambla in Barcelona – Trip2Trip

    Trip2Trip / Europe / Spain / Barcelona /

    Thimble Game, Rambla, Barcelona

    Contents

The Rambla is Barcelona’s main pedestrian street. It starts at Plaza Catalunya with a straight arrow goes straight to the port to the sea, and crashes into it at the monument to Christopher Columbus. The Rambla divides the two historic districts of Old Barcelona: El Raval to the west of it and the Gothic Quarter to the east.

The Rambla is to Barcelona what the Champs-Elysées is to Paris. So this is a very busy place, and the number of tourists here just rolls over. That is why there are tourist attractions of various kinds. Here, for example, thimblemakers, as on the Moscow Arbat in the nineties. There are musicians, there are artists, there are living statues. There are cafes, restaurants and expensive shops.

In fact, the Rambla is not one street, but as many as five, flowing one into another. That’s why it’s called 9 in Spanish.0013 Ramblas, and in Catalan Rambles. This ending -s means plural. Therefore, their strict translation into Russian should sound like Rumbles. But, you see, it does not sound.

The name itself comes from the Arabic word “ramp”, that is, a dry river bed, which, however, is filled with water during the spring flood. The name stuck, because earlier there was a moat near the fortress wall. The resulting streets very quickly gained popularity among Barcelona residents and became a favorite place for walking.

The first section is called Rambla Canaletes. It appeared because of the cast-iron drinking fountain. Nowadays, there is a sign that you must definitely drink from this source in order to definitely return to Barcelona. Also, this fountain was chosen by fans of FC Barcelona.

The last, fifth, Marine Ralabra was added to the boulevard only during the 1992 Olympics.

Church of Our Lady of Bethlehem

Church of Our Lady of Bethlehem, Las Ramblas, Barcelona

This is the only church on the Rambla. In Spanish it is called Iglesia de La Madre de Dios de Belén, in Catalan it is Església de la Mare de Déu de Betlem . Located between the streets of Carme ( Calle del Carme ) and the artist Fortuny ( Calle Pintor Fortuny ).

The story begins in 1553, when the Jesuit Order received permission to build the first Jesuit school in Barcelona. In 1555, the first church was already flaunting on the Rambla. In 1671, during the celebration of the canonization of Francisco Borgia, a general of the Jesuit order, a firecracker accidentally flew into the church and started a fire.

In 1681, the construction of a new baroque building, designed by Josep Juli, began. Construction ended only in 1732. The sculptural frame was made by Francesc Santacruz y Artigues and his student Andreu Sala. Initially, the church belonged to the Jesuits, but after their expulsion from Spain in 1767, it was transferred to other congregations.

Only 20 years later, a service was held in the church by the Archbishop of Barcelona. On September 25, 1835, the parish of Our Lady of Bethlehem was organized. At 19In 36, the church was again damaged by fire. The last restoration was carried out in 1991-1993.

The façade of the church reminds of the baroque style. On the sides of the entrance are statues of Ignatius de Loyola and Francisco Borgia. The tympanum depicts the birth of Jesus.

Church of Our Lady of Bethlehem, Rambla, Barcelona

The church can be visited free of charge. From Monday to Friday, the first service starts at 9.00, the last at 20.00. On weekends and holidays, the first service begins at 11.00, the last at 20.00. The church is closed daily from 13.45 to 17.00.

    Boqueria Market

    Boqueria Market, Rambla, Barcelona

Mercat de São Josep , better known as Boqueria Market ( La Boqueria ), is the most famous market in Barcelona. And also the oldest. It is believed that the best products in the whole city are sold here, which I highly doubt, since it is highly promoted and is located on the tourist route. The portability of Barcelona is reflected in the fact that Boqueria has a huge selection of “seafood”, be it fish or some kind of oysters. But the counters of Boqueria are not full of the sea alone! There are vegetables, fruits, herbs, and nuts. And even wine, meat, sausages and, of course, jamon!

The first mention of Boqueria dates back to 1217, when meat stalls were set up right outside the city gates. Since 1470, pigs have been sold at this place, and the market was called Mercat Bornet. In the future, straw was also sold on it, so the market became known as Mercat de la Palla (Straw Market). Then the future Boqueria was considered a continuation of the Plaza Nova market, but they were separated, and then they began to sell only fish and meat. In 1826, I was officially recognized, and in 1835 they decided to build a building for it.

Just in July of the same year, Convent del Carmelitas Descalços de Sant Josep ( Convent del Carmelitas Descalços de Sant Josep) burned down on the Rambla. In those years, Catalonia was undergoing a process of secularization under the program of Prime Minister Juan Mendisabal. By 1840, the building was already built on the model of the Parisian arcades. The architect was Mas Vila ( Mas Vilà) , and its spectacular train station-like roof was designed by Miquel de Bergue ( Miquel de Bergue).

Boquería is open from 8:00 to 20:30 every day except Sunday, which is strange for the market. He also has an official website.

Casa Bruno, Chinese House with Umbrellas and Dragon

Casa Bruno (Chinese House with Umbrellas and Dragon), Rambla, Barcelona

Directly opposite the Boqueria is another example of modernism. This time he imitates Chinese motifs. The facade is decorated with umbrella hats, instead of a sign on the corner of the house, a Chinese dragon is fixed, again with umbrellas, fans and a lantern. Its official name is Casa Bruno Cuadros ( Casa Bruno Cuadros/ Bruno Cuadras ), but the people call it simply house with umbrellas ( a casa dels paraigües).

    Umbrella house, Rambla, Barcelona

Initially, it was just a shop selling umbrellas. The building itself was built in 1858. And in 1883, he decided to reconstruct it for the needs of the owner Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas ( Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas ). The result is one of the most beautiful buildings on the entire Rambla. By the way, it was this architect who built the Arc de Triomphe.

    Plaza Reial

    Plaza Reial, Barcelona

One of the most beautiful squares in Barcelona is Royal ( Plaça Real ). Its architectural landscape was shaped at the end of the 19th century by the architect Francesco Daniel Molina y Casamajo. Other attractions in Barcelona

Las Ramblas – 5 famous streets of Barcelona

In almost every major city, or at least in the capital, there is some major street, boulevard, which is especially famous and is the hallmark of the city. If in Moscow such an attraction is the Arbat, in Paris – the Champs Elysees, then in Barcelona it is the Rambla or Las Ramblas. The very word “rambla” was borrowed from the Arabs and it is translated as a street formed in the bed of a dried up river.

Las Ramblas consists of five separate streets, each with its own points of interest, establishments or architectural monuments. The upper part of the Rambla starts from the Rambla de Canaletes. Here is the famous Canaletes Fountain, which has its own belief. So, according to legend, everyone who drinks water from this fountain will definitely return to Barcelona again. There is also a theater arch here, near which those residents and tourists who like to look at a real Barcelona bullfight gather.

Further on, the boulevard smoothly turns into the second part of the Rambla dels Estudis, where the bird market is concentrated, where anyone can buy a bird.

The third section of the Rambla is the flower street – Rambla de les Flores. There is also the La Boqueria covered market, where you can always choose absolutely fresh seafood, vegetables or fruits. Nearby is the creation of Joan Miro in the form of a mosaic work, which depicts a woman with a bird. This is a true classic of the Catalan avant-garde. On the same square stands the most remarkable house of Casa Bruno Quadras, the entire facade of which is decorated with open umbrellas. The fact is that earlier the creator of these umbrellas and their manufacturer lived in it.

The fourth street is the Rambla dels Caputxins, where the Capuchin monastery stands. The “Chinese District” is also located here, although there are very few Chinese left in this place. Nearby is the Plaza del Pi, where tourists like to relax.

Parks barcelona: 10 Best Parks in Barcelona

Best parks in Barcelona – Lonely Planet

With its exquisite Modernist architecture, unbeatable fine-dining and Mediterranean, cosmopolitan attitude, it’s easy to see why Barcelona has become such an acclaimed city for globe-trotting travelers.  The city’s parks and gardens are less well known–an oversight considering the abundance of green spaces in the Catalan capital. Exploring them is one of the best ways to get a feel for Barcelona’s diverse neighborhoods.

Barcelona’s parks may be less famous than the legendary gardens in Paris, Berlin, London and Madrid, but the city is dotted with lovely open spaces, ornamented by landmark buildings, traversed by walking paths, and crowned by viewpoints poised high above the city streets – all perfect for an evening stroll. If you crave calming spaces, here is our pick of the best parks to visit in Barcelona.

    Parc de la Ciutadella

When Barcelona fell to the troops of Philip V of Spain during the Spanish War of Succession (1701-1714), the new ruler commanded a citadel be built in the city to keep Barcelona and its citizens under control. For decades, the fortress was seen as a symbol of repression, until it was finally torn down during the Glorious Revolution in 1868. The empty space created by this citizens’ act of rebellion was the starting point for the Parc de la Ciutadella, whose name still recalls the unlamented citadel.

Today, Parc de la Ciutadella is the lungs of downtown Barcelona, a favorite meeting point where locals and travelers gather with friends, eat al fresco takeaway lunches, and listen to the live music which is always being performed somewhere in the park. The mist from fountains cools the air, trees shade the pathways, and in the mornings, the park’s pathways are filled with runners, yogis and walkers taking advantage of the moderate temperatures.

Despite the loss of the citadel, you can still find some buildings from Philip V’s time in the park, like the king’s former arsenal, now the Parlament de Catalunya. The park is also home to Zoo de Barcelona, one of the most renowned zoological parks in Europe, where the white gorilla Floquet de Neu (Snowflake) lived for 39 years.

    Parc del Laberint d’Horta

    Best park for getting lost

Not many tourists know about the oldest park in Barcelona, but neither did most locals until 2006, when the park’s maze was used as a shooting location in the multi-award winning movie Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Set in a particularly quiet, green area in the outskirts of Barcelona, the Parc del Laberint d’Horta was built by an aristocratic family at the end of the 18th century, but it was not opened to the public until 1971.

At the heart of the garden is perhaps the most perfect labyrinth in Spain, a 750-square-meter maze of geometric pathways, bound by immaculately trimmed cypress trees. After conquering the mysteries of the maze, explore the surrounding 18th- and 19th-century gardens and admire the medieval Torre Sobirana, the remains of a 14th-century palace.

    Parc del Guinardó

Parc del Guinardó was constructed in 1918 on land that was previously used by local winemakers. For several centuries grapes were grown on these slopes to produce to full-bodied Catalan wines, but the vineyards were abandoned due to disease and the hillside was returned to peaceful pine forests and scrub-land. Bus V17 runs from Port Vell to Carmel, passing close to the edge of the park.

Parc del Guinardó is nestled in the neighborhood of Horta-Guinardó, in the elevated part of Barcelona, and there are some great viewpoints reached via walking trails through the pine trees. The best views are from the Bunkers del Carmel, a series of anti-aircraft gun positions built during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. Many locals grab snacks and cold bottled beers and head up here in the afternoon to watch the sun set over the city.

    Parc Güell

    Best park for Gaudí fans

Parc Güell needs little introduction. Designed by the father of Catalan Modernism, architect Antoni Gaudí, the park is a sprawl of eye-catching architectural elements, mosaic tiles and astonishing undulating forms, overlooking the Barcelona skyline, with an imposing stretch of the Mediterranean in the background. This captivating piece of whimsy was constructed in 1914 and opened as a public space in 1926, ringed by a tangle of forested pathways.

Parc Güell’s green spaces have long been a favorite recreation area for locals, and the city authorities got themselves into hot water in 2013 after introducing a €10 entry fee to control visitor numbers, causing public outrage. After years of campaigning, the authorities eventually agreed to allow residents from surrounding districts to access the park for free. Citizens from the rest of Barcelona can visit with a special permit; tourists, however, still need to pay.

    Parc de Montjuïc

    Best park for all-day adventures

Montjuïc is the mountain that borders Barcelona to the west, and its name translates as Mountain of Jews in medieval Catalan, a reference to the ancient Jewish cemetery that once stood here. Parc de Montjuïc is often described as the ‘park of parks’ because of the many public spaces and gardens dotted over its slopes. The highlight is the Jardí Botànic, the best botanical garden in Barcelona, with five landscaped zones designed to mimic habitats and terrain from different parts of the world. Fans of arid landscapes will love Jardins de Mossèn Costa Llobera, which has over 800 different species of cactus.

Parc de Montjuïc has more to offer than just gardens. There are forest trails, scenic picnic areas and a string of city landmarks and museums, including the 17th-century Castell de Montjuic, the Fundació Joan Miró art museum, and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, housed in the modern-Baroque Palau Nacional. Montjuïc also plays host to a slew of music festivals, including the popular Brunch Elektronik.

Fit travelers can easily climb Montjuïc on foot, but you can also reach the top on the funicular railway that departs from the metro station of Paral·lel. Alternatively, a dangling cable car (with great views) departs from La Barceloneta. If you’ve worked up an appetite getting here, drop into the popular restaurant, Terraza Martínez, for terrace views and some of the best paella in Barcelona.

    Jardins del Palau de Pedralbes

    Best park for garden lovers

The most majestic of Barcelona’s parks and gardens is located within the walls of the Royal Palace of Pedralbes, the official residence of the Royal Spanish Family from 1919 and 1931. The palace was later transformed into the headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean, so it’s not open to the public today, but the imperial gardens are completely free to roam.

As well as elegant topiary and colorful planted beds, the park is noteworthy for its collection of towering cedar trees, from Himalayan species to cedars from Japan and Morocco. There are plenty of extraordinary architectural and sculptural elements too, including the Hercules Fountain, designed by Antoni Gaudí, which spouts water through the mouth of a stylized steel dragon.

The gardens are also known for cultural and music events, the most popular being the Festival de Pedralbes, which takes places every summer, attracting a wide variety of internationally-renowned musician and performing artists.

7 Barcelona Parks and Gardens (You Don’t Want to Miss)

    Park Guell Barcelona, Spain

When traveling, there’s sometimes no better way to immerse oneself in a city than by visiting the parks and gardens. Spaces beloved by locals and visitors alike, a city’s green spaces are often littered with evidence of the area’s art, culture, food, and lifestyle.

This is certainly true when looking at the many parks, gardens, and green spaces in Barcelona, and certainly a visit to the city without experiencing Barcelona’s parks and gardens would be an incomplete one. There’s something about the bustling Barcelona parks located just out of the city center or the Sagrada Familia that lends themselves to a more thorough Barcelona experience.

Yes, Barcelona’s beaches might get the limelight when it comes to outdoor activities for travelers, but we often find that travelers truly wanting to see Barcelona like a local will opt for the shaded, lush Barcelona parks instead.

From the most famous gardens and the most centrally-located to the hidden, emerald gems tucked away in residential neighborhoods, let’s pay a visit to some of Barcelona’s top five parks and gardens.

Ahead of planning your trip to Barcelona, Spain, learn about Barcelona’s history, architecture, art, and parks with an online seminar. Our scholars and experts have discussed anything from Gaudi’s Park Güell to the struggle for Catalonian Independence and Barcelona tapas in succinct 90-minute lectures.

    1. Park Güell

No visit to Barcelona—whether you’re interested in green spaces or not—is complete without a stop at Park Güell, and so we’ll start our explorations there. The landscaping is not nearly as eye-catching as the Art Nouveau architecture and artwork, so while we’ll appreciate the various flora and the views of Barcelona and the Mediterranean, we’ll likely pay more attention to the colorful mosaics, sweeping columns, and grandiose staircases that cover the park, evidence of the artist’s, Antoni Gaudi, unarguable genius. While we might have to wait a few moments for the other travelers to clear the area, we certainly wouldn’t want to miss a chance to catch a selfie in front of the famed mosaic salamander, one of the most photographed points of interest in the city.

Where: Park Güell, 08024 Barcelona, Spain

    2. Parc de Cervantes

We’ll visit Parc de Cervantes, walking into the park right off Av. Diagonal, with one thing in mind—roses. The park is famous for them, with approximately 10,000 rose bushes coming to full bloom in late spring and early summer. The wide, expansive Barcelona park is brimming with the flowers, beds of them laid out neatly as a nod to Barcelona’s history in floral competitions. If the youngest members of our party aren’t quite as enchanted by the buds as we are, they’ll be glad to find a playground and children’s games in the center of the park, as it’s a very locally-beloved site frequented by families from the surrounding neighborhoods. For the nature lovers and floral admires, this is one of the most fitting Barcelona parks.

Where: Avinguda Diagonal, 706, 08034 Barcelona, Spain

    3. Montjuïc Park

Montjuïc is not only a park, it’s also a very prominent hill located right next to the Mediterranean. Archaeologists and historians believe it to be the birthplace of Barcelona, as it was a strategic location coveted by cultures throughout the centuries, including the Romans. Now, Montjuïc Park retains its relevance by providing a range of activities suitable for any traveler.

For views of the harbor, one might take the funicular up to the hill’s peak. On our way down, we can stop by the various cultural landmarks that call Montjuïc home. There’s the National Palace, which isn’t really a palace, but instead, a structure built for the 1929 International Exhibition and home to the National Art Museum of Catalonia. The Magic Fountain is also a can’t-miss spot, as it spews water far above our heads, accompanied by lights and music. The Barcelona Olympic Park is likewise situated inside Montjuïc Park, encompassing all the main facilities for the 1992 Olympic Games.

Where: Parc de Montjuïc, Avinguda del Castell, Barcelona, Spain

    4. Parc de la Ciutadella

Similarly, we always find an entire trip’s worth of adventures and activities when we visit Parc de la Ciutadella. The large, free, and public Barcelona park was created in the mid-1800s, at which point it was the only green space in Barcelona, but the land’s historical significance stretches back even further. In 1774, a citadel was built on the grounds by King Philips V and its remnants can be seen in the Catalan Parliament Building.

One of the park’s most notable spots is the Cascada Fountain, where we admire the glimmering waters that surround the extravagantly designed fountain base, outfitted with mythical creatures. If we’re not pressed for time, we can easily spend a good portion of our day within Parc de la Ciutadella, visiting the Parc Zoologic, Geological Museum, and other top spots. But if like us, you’d rather stay outdoors simply rent a rowboat and take a turn around the park’s lovely lake.

Where: Passeig de Picasso, 21, 08003 Barcelona, Spain

    5. Laberint d’Horta

While Parc de la Ciutadella maybe Barcelona’s oldest established, public park, the Laberint d’Horta contains the oldest established Barcelona garden. The elegant green space harkens back to a more regal time and we might find ourselves feeling a bit royal ourselves as we casually stroll the 18th-century neoclassical garden, the 19th-century romantic garden, and the hedge maze. The three-terraced gardens are conveniently situated inside the historic Desvalls estate, allowing us to explore a bit of history and architecture as we peruse the pristine landscaping, manicured to perfection and scattered with sculptures of Greek gods and goddesses.

Where: Passeig dels Castanyers, 1, 08035 Barcelona, Spain

    6. Diagonal Mar Park

The second biggest of Barcelona parks, we’re consistently amazed by Parc Diagonal Mar’s variety of plants, intriguing hanging sculptures, and refreshing water features. The park was once the site of the Macosa factory but was redeveloped as a part of Barcelona’s revitalization of industrial spaces which we are thankful for. The modern architectural feel of the park is rather abstract thanks to Enric Miralles who designed and opened the park in 2002. Take time to walk over the futuristic Gateway Lake bridge which zigzags its way through the sky offering wonderful views over the lush space. For kids, there is plenty of room for running around, admiring playful sculptures, and whizzing down the slides in the playground. There’s a dog park too for watching playful pups or bringing your own for a runaround. It’s a wonderful place to spend a relaxing few hours yet within easy reach of the city. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a festival or music performances throughout the day.

Where: Carrer de Llull, 350, Barcelona, Spain

    7. Tamarita Gardens

Jardins de la Tamarita, or Tamirata Gardens, surround a stunning bourgeois mansion from the early 20th century. The gardens abound with fountains, classical statues, and other ornate decorative elements. We find it the perfect spot to potter through as we admire the orderly gardens with their impressive classical features away from the crowds of some other locations. Write a journal, or read a book while you absorb some quiet time in this beautiful oasis in the city. For families, the park is small enough to always have an eye on the kids, or there is a specific children’s play area with a mini-adventure playground.

Where: Passeig de Sant Gervasi, 47, Barcelona, Spain

Looking for the Sagrada Familia? Well that’s another story and well worth your time. Context organizes Sagrada Familia private tours of Gaudi’s inspiring creation or online seminars and courses covering all of the globe. Explore with an expert. You won’t regret it.

Casa ramona: Casa Ramona Inc. – About Us

$4.9 million cleanup planned for historic Casa Ramona site in San Bernardino – San Bernardino Sun

From the ashes of Casa Ramona in westside San Bernardino, Esther Estrada sees affordable senior housing and a small community center rising.

But first, the remains of the former school must be removed.

A heaping pile of contaminated debris is all that’s left of the historic Mediterranean-style building after it was leveled in the wake of a 2020 fire that tore through the boarded-up and abandoned structure on West Seventh Street.

Esther Estrada, Casa Ramona executive director, stands before the ruins of the Casa Ramona building in San Bernardino on Friday, Aug. 19, 2022. A fire that raged through the boarded-up building on July 29, 2020, resulted in debris containing asbestos and lead, requiring costly cleanup. (Photo by Watchara Phomicinda, The Press-Enterprise/SCNG)

Estrada, a former San Bernardino City Council member who attended Ramona School in the 1940s and has served as executive director of Casa Ramona for decades, thought years would pass before a costly cleanup effort could begin.

“I knew this was not going to be easy,” she said recently, “but we were going to punch away at it.”

Last month, however, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control awarded Casa Ramona $4.9 million in grant funding to remove the pile of ashes, paving the way for new uses on the property.

“Ramona was my elementary school, and I loved my school, loved my neighbors,” Estrada said. “And being a councilwoman in the area, it’s very, very tough. Tough because I continue to see that pile of debris there.”

Ramona School was built for about $110,000 and opened with 802 students on Nov. 10, 1926.

Casa Ramona ultimately purchased the site and ran child development services, senior citizen programs and training out of the former San Bernardino school district building.

In a 2007 report, the city deemed the westside site historic.

“For over 50 years, there’ve been concerted efforts to try to kill the westside neighborhood,” Councilman Theodore Sanchez, who represents the area now, said in a phone interview, “but we’re still here. And with Esther’s efforts, she secured the money to transform the site into another mecca of community service and a pillar that will continue to hold up our westside San Bernardino neighborhoods.”

In an email, Sanford Nax, a spokesman for the Department of Toxic Substances Control, said Casa Ramona’s proposal stood out among grant applicants because of the building’s importance to the surrounding community.

“It once was a hub for elementary school children, then went vacant for a number of years before it was destroyed by fire, leaving behind debris that contaminated the soil,” Nax wrote. “Under the proposal, it will again be a hub for residents of the disadvantaged neighborhood in which it sits.”

Headquartered in a historically vulnerable and disadvantaged area, Nax said the West Seventh Street property is among the most environmentally burdened in the state.

Casa Ramona’s pitch to reuse the site, he added, “is intended to fulfill critical needs of the community, including low-income senior housing and a community center to provide job training, educational programs, medical and behavioral health services, and space for nonprofit and municipal uses.”

Cleanup activities are expected to begin early next year.

In the interim, Casa Ramona will continue operating out of Nunez Park, where the organization has served children since the West Seventh Street building was razed following the 2020 fire.

Estrada and others also will spend the next several months advising local groups about the forthcoming cleanup.

“Our plan is to go forward,” Estrada said, “and get the site cleaned up and revitalize that land.

Historic Ramona School building in San Bernardino burns – San Bernardino Sun

Wave after wave of well-wishers stopped by a burned-out building on West 7th Steet in San Bernardino on Thursday, July 30, to offer Esther Estrada condolences as if a member of her family had died.

Estrada, 79, attended Ramona School in the Mediterranean-style building in the 1940s, and then for four decades served as executive director of Casa Ramona, which at the same site hosted social services agencies and programs that offered senior meals, job training, medical and behavioral health clinics and, for about six years, the Casa Ramona Academy for Technology, Community and Education.

But late Wednesday night, a fire tore through more than half of the boarded-up, abandoned building, devastating the structure and those who have fond memories of school that opened there in 1926. It was unclear Thursday whether it would have to be torn down.

San Bernardino County Fire Battalion Chief Mike McClintock estimated that one-half to two-thirds of the building was destroyed.

“I know every inch of this building, and it’s just heartbreaking to see what happened,” Estrada said, crying. “We’ve received tremendous support from the community, people stopping and sharing our grief. Because it’s theirs, too.”

The cause of the fire was under investigation. On Tuesday, San Bernardino police Explorers and other community members had descended on the property for a cleanup day. They found evidence that transients had been living there.

City councilmember Theodore Sanchez, who represents the area in which the building is located west of the 215 Freeway, said he didn’t think it was a coincidence that the fire broke out the day after the cleanup.

“It’s an ongoing struggle we have in the city, transients are laying claim to a lot of the important places in the city,” Sanchez said.

Ramona School was built at a cost of $109,605 and opened with 802 students on Nov. 10, 1926 to great fanfare that included songs from school children and an orchestra, according to a 2007 report by the city commissioned when Casa Ramona sought to construct a new building on the site. The city had to determine whether the site was historic and needed the protections afforded such sites, Estrada said. The report concluded that the site was of local importance, she said.

Casa Ramona, lacking funds, did not build a new facility. It had purchased the site from the San Bernardino school district after the district abandoned the building in 1971 because it did not meet earthquake standards.

The school was part of a spree of school-building as the city’s population exploded in the 1920s. The architectural firm was Witmer and Watson. One of the architects was David Whitmer, who designed the Pentagon.

The authors of the report reviewed previous studies and news reports about the school that made references to “Mexican” school children.

“You have to consider the time,” Estrada said. “Does it surprise me? No. The neighborhood was primarily Hispanic and they primarily worked for Santa Fe (railroad) and then for Kaiser (steel).”

The curriculum included mostly what today would be considered shop classes. The original 1926 architectural drawings included a cooking room, and an agricultural room a shoe shop, an arts and crafts shop and an automobile and electric shop.

“That thinking was pretty typical of that time. We were considered not necessarily as bright as others, so  ‘Therefore we will give you shop classes,’ ” Estrada said.

There was at least one victory against the stereotyping of Hispanics.

A little more than a month before the school opened, teachers touring the building were aghast at the bright colors and wrote a letter to the superintendent of schools, according to the report.

“Since seeing the color scheme our ardor has been greatly dampened. Perhaps we are not ‘artists,’ but we have feelings, and those conglomerate colors have wounded our sensibilities. We are continually trying to teach the Mexican children to like subdued colors, and not to wear glaring pinks, reds and blues, but how can we when the very building we teach in is painted three shades of green, orange, pink, a glaring blue and a lavender gray?” the letter said in part.

District officials ordered the school to be repainted before it opened, Estrada said.

Casa Ramona has established a GoFundMe page to raise money for cleanup and rebuilding.

    Casa l: CASA L’ACQUA RISTORANTE ITALIANO – 176 Photos & 154 Reviews – 9 SE 7th Ave, Delray Beach, Florida – Italian – Restaurant Reviews – Phone Number

Restaurant Review: Casa L’Acqua Ristorante Italiano

It’s hard not to love Italian food. With its comforting carbs, hearty sauces, variety of regional specialties and—of course—wine, I completely understand why Italian cuisine is beloved. With that said, I’ve had my fair share of dishes hailing from the Mediterranean peninsula that unfortunately missed the mark for some reason or another.

At Casa L’Acqua I can happily say that wasn’t the case. Each dish was expertly prepared and even, in some cases, surpassed expectations. The quaint cottage that has been home to several restaurants seems to have found its missing puzzle piece. Casa L’Acqua relocated from its previous Atlantic Avenue location (currently Avalon Steak & Seafood) about two years ago, and it hasn’t looked back. The main dining room, with its vibey bar and wine cellar, is cozy, and so is its fully enclosed patio in the back.

Expect white tablecloths, tuxedoed staff and attentive service. Yes, prices are also high, but totally worth it. Plus, the portions are sizable, so you should definitely come hungry. The wine list is Italian-focused but does offer a variety of bottles from around the world.

The evening’s appetizer specials—the impressive langoustines ($39)—were presented to us before the entrée specials were announced. Grilled with garlic, they nearly melted in my mouth. You can order two or four, and they’re served butterflied open (easily shareable) with a side of risotto. We also ordered the Classica Burrata Italiana ($14.95), and while it was a cheese sphere as expected, I had hoped it would be creamier.

    Trenette al pesto

It was difficult to choose main dishes, as there were several specials that sounded appetizing, as did most (if not all) of the ones listed on the regular menu. We tried the lobster ravioli special ($34.95), trenette al pesto ($20.95) and fettuccine Bolognese ($23.95). Sometimes when I order ravioli, they seem emaciated or lack enough sauce, but not here. The house-made ravioli were impressively stuffed with lobster and topped with a hearty portion of alla vodka sauce with chopped shrimp. I smelled the basil before the pesto hit the table. It’s one of those comforting smells that instantly made my mouth water. While it’s a simple dish, it was perfectly prepared. The Bolognese called to us, so we ordered a half portion just to try. Again, it came just as we’d expect—warming our souls with its ground meat, classic vegetables and rustic flavor. We also tried the snapper Livornese ($39.95), and if you like that traditional preparation with garlic, anchovies, capers and black olives, it will not disappoint. For a final treat, we shared the homemade Ricotta Cheesecake ($14.75)—a perfect balance of sweet and moist and a great way to end the memorable meal.

Thanks to Evgeny, a wonderful creative morning!
Despite the fact that no one except me was signed up for the master class that day, Evgeny did not cancel or reschedule the event)
As a result, the time flew by unnoticed, it was very interesting and unusual to start a vacation in Spain with a drawing lesson! I really liked the result!
And yet, Evgeny printed wonderful postcards based on my drawing, which will remain with me and my family for a long time!
                                  Thank you!

                                  more

I recommend it to everyone! It’s non-standard, it’s interesting, it’s an incredible memory and pride – it’s so simple and easy to draw a picture, and all thanks to Evgeny. Be sure to order postcards! Special thanks to Evgeny, an incredible depth and intelligence and joy man! You won’t regret it, that’s for sure. Everyone was on the excursions, but to create something like this with your own hands is worth a lot !!!!

                                  more

Everyone who loves to draw will enjoy this event. And be sure to order postcards with your masterpieces!!!

                                  more

I think it’s a great idea to spend a couple of hours in Barcelona without fuss and running, just watching, painting and discovering new details of the building you have chosen.
If someone wants to go on such an excursion, but doubts whether they can draw something, then go for sure. Eugene will patiently explain and show everything. I got a lot of pleasure and positive emotions! For those who are not afraid to get off the famous hiking trails, love to walk and draw (or want to try), these workshops are a godsend. It’s really cool, I recommend it! Eugene, thank you very much!

“We were at the master class with the whole family. Met on Boulevard San Joan, walked to the House of Thorns. Eugene gave us pencils and paper and explained the basic principles of drawing.
Two hours flew by. And so surprisingly, even the children did not get bored. Everyone was engrossed in their work. Eugene approached each of us, prompted, gave advice.
As a result, everyone got their own wonderful postcard.
We really liked the master class! We learned a lot of new things, spent time outdoors doing interesting creative activities. We will definitely go to such events!”
