The Gaudi House Museum is known as Casa Museu Gaudi in Catalan. It is a three-storey house with a tower roof, all painted in pink stucco.

The building was originally constructed as a model for another 60 homes to be built in the Park Güell development. Gaudi designed the garden around the house, but the building itself was constructed by his pupil Francesc Berenguer.

The project was abandoned, and the house given to Gaudi to live in. The great architect stayed in the home for 20 years, until 1925. After his death, the house was bought by the Chiappo family. They admired the architect and decided to name the building Gaudi House in his honor.

In 1963, Gaudi House was opened to the public. The Foundation that runs the museum has collected many personal documents and pieces of furniture designed by Gaudi over the years. Their goal is to showcase the personal side of the architect and raise awareness of his life and work.

Today, the Gaudi House Museum is part of the free access area of Park Güell. You can visit the park, designed by the great architect, and then also see the place where he lived.

Note that the museum requires its own admission ticket. When you buy a ticket, you will be given an admission time, as only a small group is allowed in the house.

History of the house

The design of the cottage was made by an assistant and friend of Gaudí named Francesc Berenguer-Mestres.

In 1904 the mansion was built, and in 1906 the architect himself moved into it with his niece and father. This happened at the moment when it became clear: Eusebi Güell’s grandiose plan to create a garden city turned out to be a failure and could not pay off.

The master lived here until the very end of his life. Only in 1925 did he move to the workshop at the Sagrada Familia temple, on which work was carried out continuously.

Soon after, the architect was hit by a tram and died.

After the death of Gaudi, the building became a private property, and in 1963 received the status of a museum.

Since 1984, the house has been a UNESCO monument, along with Casa Batlló and other masterpieces of the inventor described on Wikipedia.

If we compare the museum in Barcelona with the grandiose creations created by Antonio Gaudi, it looks rather modest.

It is immediately obvious that the great architect is unpretentious in everyday life. The master was completely absorbed in creativity. He could constantly wear the same clothes, and only came home to sleep.

Gaudí spent most of his time at his construction sites.

Because of his busy schedule, the inventor never started a family.

Inside the building, various household items belonging to the master and recreating the atmosphere of the early 20th century:

Outside, the cottage is surrounded by a metal fence created by the owner. The fence with smooth curves and twisted arches has remained in its original form, and every guest can touch it.

The history of the house, which later became a museum of the famous Spanish architect, began at the turn of the 19th-20th century. The project, striking in its grandeur, could be among the greatest creations of its time, but it soon became clear that the funds invested in it were unlikely to pay off, so all work gradually ceased.

The only reminder of the once grandiose building plans is a beautiful pale pink building that served as a model for other local buildings. This was the same house in which, a few years after Guell’s death, Antonio Gaudi would settle with his father and his brother’s daughter. Having lived in it for more than 20 years (almost until the very end of his life), the master altered a lot to his liking and left behind a lot of valuable things. After his death, the building became a private building, and in 1963 the Gaudí Museum, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, was opened in it.

Compared to other works created by the great architect, the Gaudí Museum in Barcelona looks rather modest. At one glance at him, it becomes clear that the master lived by one creativity and was absolutely unpretentious in everyday life. The museum building consists of several floors, the first of which is occupied by furnishings designed by the great architect. These unusual furniture products, which were very fashionable in their time, were eagerly bought up by entrepreneurs and wealthy officials. Subsequently, most of this collection was bought out, so each of you can see them.

The rooms that make up the second floor of the Gaudí House Museum in Barcelona correspond exactly to the environment in which the legendary master lived and worked. Among them, a special place is occupied by the architect’s bedroom, several private rooms and a couple of workshops. The interiors of all halls have been preserved in their original form – they remained exactly the same as they were in the first half of the 20th century. Gaudi’s personal belongings, various household items and original decorative ornaments are scattered everywhere, looking at which you can learn a lot of interesting facts about the creator of the most outstanding buildings in Spain.

The third floor of the building is occupied by a unique library with over 30,000 books and documents related to the architect’s name. There is also a separate room, which houses paintings by Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro. They are also open to the public. True, you can get there only by appointment. In the basement of the Gaudi Museum in Spain there is a dining room, a former food warehouse and a small souvenir shop with a separate entrance. There are more than 50 museums in Barcelona. Without a doubt, there is something to see in everyone, but it is quite difficult to find a place as fascinating as CosmoCaixa. This museum will be interesting for both adults and children. You will be able to learn a lot about the Natural Sciences, do some live experiments and even stand in a tropical downpour while watching huge fish and other exotic animals.

The total area of CosmoCaixa is 5,000 m2. The museum hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions, several exhibition halls and a planetarium. If you get hungry, you can stop by the local cafe, or take a seat at the picnic area if you brought food with you.

On the first floor, to the left of the ticket office, be sure to visit the museum shop, there are a lot of interesting gifts for you and your friends. The museum is housed in a 20th-century modernist building originally built by the architect Josef Domenic i Estapa as a blind asylum, which it remained until 1981, after which the building was turned into the Museum of Science (Museu de la Ciencia). It also features a modern glass and steel addition with six underground floors filled with natural light and an observation deck that offers wonderful views of the city, the sea and Montjuic.

Five floors of the museum are united by a wide serpentine staircase with a symbolic “Tree of Life” as an axis. This is the trunk of the tropical akarikara tree, whose extremely heavy and hard wood has many knots and voids.

Cosmo Caixa is not a museum in the usual sense, where, as a rule, exhibits cannot be touched. Here, touching is not only possible, but even necessary, if only in order for the experimental setup to work from the movement of the hand. In 2006 it was named the best Science Museum in Europe.

The museum’s permanent exhibitions include a reproduction of an area of about a kilometer of the Amazon rainforest with a complete reproduction of its ecosystem. The path to it passes through a dark gallery past anthills, multi-colored poisonous frogs, snakes and piranhas, which, fortunately, live on the other side of the glass. A few steps – and you are in the real Amazon rainforest, where every 15 minutes you can get under a tropical downpour. Here you will see more than 100 different species of animals and plants (birds, fish, ants, caimans, poisonous frogs, anaconda snake and even a cute tapir).

On the left is an interactive geological wall showing various geological processes such as erosion, sedimentation and volcanic processes. It consists of 7 sections of natural rocks, whose total weight is about 100 tons.

In the ultra-modern 3D Planetarium, you can observe the Universe at different stages, the development of life on Earth, and also find yourself in the very center of the Big Bang.

While exploring the many halls that make up a truly huge museum building, CosmoCaixa offers visitors a series of temporary and permanent exhibitions, among which
highlight the “Hall of the Universe”, where we can discover the cosmos and its evolution from the Big Bang to the present day. Interactive journey back to the creation of the cosmos tracks evolution
species and penetrates into the depths of the human brain.

The Flooded Forest recreates the Amazonian ecosystem in a 1,000 square meter greenhouse that is home to piranhas, crocodiles and other animal and plant species typical of the area.

The “geological wall”, formed by seven large sections of real rocks, allows you to imagine geological changes in the most visual and impressive way, on
over countless years that have shaped the world we live in.

But if the content of the museum is fascinating, then the building in which it is located is also noteworthy from an architectural point of view. The Cosmocaixa building, built between 1904 and 1909 by Josep Domenech and
Estapoy is a fine example of modernist architecture.

The total reconstruction of the old building, as well as a huge modern extension, made in the 200th year, made it possible to significantly increase the area of the museum, in which there is always, even in summer,
the most visited months, free and light.

An interesting feature of the Cosmocais Museum is that its visitors are mostly local residents, which is connected, firstly, with the fact that the museum is really interesting, and secondly, with its
location in the upper zone of Barcelona, which is not so easy to reach by public transport.

However, this has its advantages – the absence of crowds and queues, characteristic of museums located closer to the center. In a word, we recommend the Cosmocais Museum to visit – and, based on our personal
preferences, we advise you to pay special attention to the “Flooded Forest” exposition – it is really worth it and, by the way, is very popular with children.

8. Casa Milà

Antonio Gaudí

Casa Milà is a luxury palace designed by Antoni Gaudí for Roser Segimón (rich widow) and Pere Milà (party-boy). They bought the building, demolished and commissioned Gaudí to create what would become Casa Milà.

The building was not intended for single-ownership but instead to be luxury apartments. It was nicknamed La Pedrera before construction finished which translates to “the stone quarry”. This is ue to the unusual Flintstones style facade.

While the building received heavy criticism, it was extremely innovative for a turn of the century structure (1912). It offered open floor plans far before HGTV popularized them and even an underground parking garage.

6. Museum of the History of Barcelona

For Ancient History Buffs

Did you know the city of Barcelona was established in antiquity? It was a Carthaginian settlement (Carthage in Africa) that passed hands between them and the Romans on a few occasions. The name of the city derives from the Barca Family, most notably Hannibal Barca who was considered one of the greatest military leaders of all time.

The city’s ancient ruins and older structures are best seen in the Bari Gothic area and that is why the Museum of the History of Barcelona is just two minutes away from the Barcelona Cathedral. That said, it is not the only site. There are 7 or so sites in Bari Gothic & El Raval and several other sites in other neighborhoods around Barcelona. The ruins are not as frequent as Rome but some are in good condition. This would without a doubt be our best ancient history museum choice in Barcelona.

5. Park Güell

Antonio Gaudí

Park Güell, like much of Barcelona, is a colorful compilation of architecture and green spaces in the La Salut neighborhood of Barcelona. The park, one of Gaudi’s early works, is as colorful as it is architecturally rich.

The area was originally an unsuccessful housing complex brought to the city by Count Eusebi Güell. There were two houses built. The first was for Count Güell and the second was to be a model home of sorts. After no buyers made offers Güell suggested Gaudi purchase it and he did in 1906.

4. Casa Batllò

Antonio Gaudí

Casa Batllò, located within walking distance of the above Casa Milà, is another architectural wonder from Antonio Gaudí. Unlike Milà, Batllò is a renovation and not new construction.

The structure is incredibly innovative in almost every way imaginable. It almost looks as if a massive iguana is trying to hide in front of a perfectly normal apartment building. From the rainbow colors to the textures of the roof, it is a work of art… and possibly hallucinogenics.

The building was the personal home of the Batlló family until 1954 when an insurance company purchased it and set up offices. The building was sold again to private owners and it is used for events as well as to be visited as a museum.

Significant restorations were done since the 1980s which is a gift to society. The vibrant colors and unique style make Casa Battlò one of Barcelona’s most outstanding attractions.

3. Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya

For Everyone

Museum Nacional d’Art de Catalunya is a well-rounded gallery to visit in Barcelona. It is by far the most comprehensive museum in Barcelona with art from the Romanesque period, Gothic, Renaissance & Baroque, all the way up to Modern and even Photography.

It is also located on Montjuïc which is a large hill and viewpoint in Barcelona in the historic Palau Nacional. This makes the visit all the better.

For Everyone

Pablo Picasso is one of Spain’s greatest artists if not the greatest. Picasso didn’t invent modern art but he did elevate it significantly. The Picasso Museum of Barcelona has about 40 works of art by the famed artist and displays them in chronological order. This creates a sort of dialogue detailing how his style changed over the course of his life.

This is a must-visit museum in Barcelona. If you are not an art person you should go anyway – maybe it will change that. Barcelona is a fun city with beaches, bars and great food. You should definitely go to have a good time and visiting a great museum while you are there will balance your visit culturally.

What attracts tourists to Barcelona?

Barcelona is one of the most attractive places for tourists from all over the world. The reason for this is the presence of a large number of various attractions, including the most interesting architectural and historical monuments, numerous museums, most of which are truly unique.

Salvador Dali Street in Barcelona

In the world there is not and, most likely, there will not be a Catalan who would glorify Catalonia more than the unforgettable Salvador Dali. Three Maestro Museums forming so
called “Dali’s triangle” receives more than 1.5 million visitors annually.

Tickets alone are sold for more than 10 million euros a year, and in general, the economic effect of the activities of museum objects associated with the name of Dali,
estimated at all in a pleasant amount – 180,000,000.

Yes, that’s right – almost two hundred million euros every year – it seems that this is more than enough to praise the brilliant Salvador every morning and every
evening without exception. However, in reality this is not entirely true.

As proof, I will cite a simple fact: among the more than 4,000 streets and several hundred squares of Barcelona, the beautiful Catalan capital, there is not a single one that wears
the name of a great Catalan. And this despite the fact that the mother of Salvador Dali was born in Barcelona, the father also had the honor to live in the capital and study at the University of Barcelona, and future parents met
Geniuses here, and here, in the Basilica of Merce, once got married. ..

This is despite the fact that interest in the work of Salvador Dali today is as high as ever, and exhibitions of his works, even minor ones, are accepted in any country of the world with a bang. This is despite the fact that one of

Probably the whole point is in the political views of Salvador Dali – you will say, and you will certainly be right. By the end of Maestro’s life, everyone completely forgot that once, at the age of 19years, his
was detained by the police for attaching the then banned “señera” (national Catalan flag) to the bow of the boat,
and after that he ended up in a Girona prison for left-anarchist views.

It is clear that talking about the political views of Salvador Dali is a very thankless task, given how many times in his life he changed them in the most radical way.

From an almost communist ideology, he quickly and painlessly went over to an apology for the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, and in recent years he lived as an inveterate monarchist. To nationalism of any kind, in
including Catalan nationalism, Salvador Dali, especially in adulthood, was purely negative, and this attitude was constantly declared in public.

Here are three incredibly good reasons for you not to like Dali in Catalonia. Firstly, dictator Francisco Franco is still fiercely hated here. Secondly, historically and to this day here
kings are strongly disliked – especially in the province of Girona, where Salvador Dali comes from. And thirdly, Catalan nationalism is an absolute “sacred cow” for many residents of the region,
no one is allowed to encroach on the bright name of which.

All this, of course, is true, and all this is important, but the main reason not to love Salvador Dali lies in his will – in the very will that is in Catalonia, and, in
features, in Barcelona they still cannot forgive him.

Let’s touch on this issue in more detail. The penultimate version of the joint wills (then Gala was still alive) was signed by the Dali spouses on December 12, 1980. According to him,
after the death of Dali and Gala, half of their property was placed at the disposal of the Kingdom of Spain, and the second – to “the Catalan people in the person of the regional government or any other institution,
which will represent him.

Note that in this will, Dali especially singled out a new clause that read: “I strongly recommend that the Catalan government remember how much I have always been
dear is my museum in Figueres.”

In other words, according to this option, all sisters received earrings, and Dali’s inheritance, after the death of him and his wife, was to be divided between
Catalonia and Madrid. It was from this time that real dances with tambourines began around the very decrepit Dali and Gala, who was two steps away from death: both the Catalans and Madrid in every possible way

government) – Jordi Pujol, unobtrusively trying to persuade the Maestro to the side of Catalonia. In addition, in 1981, for services in the field of art, Salvador Dali was awarded the highest award.

However, it was difficult to compete with the center. The Madrid authorities turned a blind eye to Dali’s tax problems, of which he always had plenty, and after the death of Gala at 1982
year and completely showered El Salvador with favors.

Two weeks after the death of Gala, King Juan Carlos bestowed on Dali the title of Marquis. In addition, the Spanish government expressed a desire to buy any two
his work and paid for them the equivalent of 500,000 pounds sterling – the money for those times (and for these) huge. The transaction took place, and these consequences were listed on a special
on this occasion, an account opened in Figueres and intended for “housekeeping, hiring nurses, medical staff,” etc.

In summary, we note: Madrid won. September 20 1982 years old while in Pubol. in the castle of the late Gala, Salvador Dali signed a new will, according to which
left all his property to the Spanish state “with an urgent request to protect, protect and promote his work.”

On December 23, 1983, in the presence of the same notary who certified Dali’s signature on his new will, the Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation, already mentioned by us, was established.

This Fund was given the utmost importance. “Now I dream of realizing the highest of my desires by founding a Foundation whose influence will go beyond the borders of the Fatherland.

One way or another, it is pointless to talk about it now, since these changes have not been made. Perhaps Dali, who was in a dying state, simply
forgot about his intention or did not have the strength to bring it to the end.

At 10-15 am, on Monday, January 23, 1989, the greatest of the creators of the 20th century expired. Cause of death, according to the official conclusion –
“heart failure complicated by pneumonia progressing irreversibly to severe respiratory failure leading to cardiac arrest.”

On the evening of January 26, the artist was buried in the church of St. Peter, located directly opposite the museum – it was here that on the ninth day after the birth, little Salvador was once baptized. say goodbye to
15,000 people came as a great surrealist.

And already on January 30, a scandal erupted. According to Spanish law, the last will of the deceased can be made public no earlier than two weeks after death, but the press did not doze off – and the morning
issue of the popular weekly “Cambio 16” came out with a giant headline: “Dalí disinherits Catalonia.” The same issue contained the devastating details of the will, for the Catalans, in which
the total priority of Madrid was unambiguously and unequivocally affirmed.

There were no matches on the day I was at the stadium, but there were crowds of fans in the stadium paying homage to the “football shrine” of Barcelona. It is no exaggeration to say that Camp Nou is not just a stadium, like FC Barcelona, which is said to be “more than a club”.

Brief description of the tour

After a tour of the FC Barcelona stadium, I realized that this tour can give a real sense of what it is like to be behind the scenes of such a famous football club. You can look at everything through the eyes of players and managers, after which you will watch matches or interviews in a completely different way.

The hall can accommodate 120 journalists. It is here that press conferences are held before and after matches. After each match, two players meet with the press. Players are chosen depending on what happened to them on the field or off the field.

Mix zone – a place where teams give post-match comments for the press.
This is where interviews are given that you have seen a thousand times on TV. “Well, Alan, I think we had a great match…” You will see the familiar blue background and sponsor logos. It’s so cool to see this live.

The audio guide is a small player that is hung around the neck and one earpiece. It is controlled in the same way as a regular player. Each stop along the tour is marked with a number that corresponds to the track number in the audio guide. Your task is to turn on the appropriate track during the tour. You can also listen to the selected tracks an unlimited number of times. Useful if you missed something and want to listen to the information again.

The museum consists of three parts:

This is the largest part of the museum. You will learn the history of the club in chronological order, starting from the year of foundation in 1899

If cups interest you more than history, you won’t be disappointed. The showcases of the museum are filled with evidence of the main achievements of the club.

The most important trophy – the Champions League Cup, is also located here. For a fee, you can even touch it. Here you can take a picture with friends holding a cup. The picture can be bought at the exit of the museum.

If you don’t need a photo, you don’t have to buy it. Therefore, nothing will stop you from touching the Champions League Cup, even if you do not have extra money in your pocket!

In general, the museum is focused mainly on the presentation of material with the help of visual stands. It seemed to me that a certain balance was found here, which made it possible not to overload visitors with an excessive amount of information. All aspects of the club are covered in detail and in a logical order.

Visitor Information – Salvador Dalí Museum

ADA accessible Parking
The Museum offers 9 designated accessible parking spaces in the lot adjacent to the Museum, available on a first come, first served basis. Entrance to the parking lot is available off Dalí Blvd. A drop-off and loading zone is located adjacent to the parking lot and the Museum for visitors needing assistance.

The primary ADA accessible entrance to the Museum is located on the west side of the building, facing the parking area. Follow accessibility signage for entrance to the Museum. Ramps are available on the West side of the building from the accessibility drop-off/loading area marked in blue.

Visitors with Mobility Needs
The Museum offers a limited number of wheelchairs for public use within the building. Visitors wishing to use a courtesy wheelchair can make a request at the App/Information Station located at the base of the spiral stairway. The courtesy wheelchairs are available on a first come, first serve basis. Reservations for wheelchairs are not available at this time.

The Museum’s galleries and the Will Raymund Theater are manual and electric mobility device accessible. Accessible doors are available at both the main entrance to the Museum and the entrance to the Avant-garden.

Tours require light walking with periods of rest and are wheelchair accessible.

Visitors with Auditory Needs
Closed captioning is provided in the Will Raymund Theater for the Museum’s “An Unparalleled Collection” and “Surrealism: The Big Idea” films.

Free audio content can be accessed by downloading the Dalí Museum App. Audio descriptions of selected artworks are available within the app. A selection of these audio descriptions are available in five additional languages: French, German Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. App tours are also available in a variety of sizes. Printed large print booklets of tours are also available at the App/Information Station located at the base of the spiral stairway.

The Museum also offers a limited supply of courtesy Induction Neck loops (standard 3.5mm connection) for use with personal hearing aids that have a t-coil switch, headphones, or adaptive devices.

American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation can be requested (727-623-4706) two weeks in advance of your visit. There is no charge for this service. To request an ASL interpreter, please submit this request form.

Visitors with Vision Needs
The Dalí Museum App interfaces with personal device Voice Over (iOS/Apple devices) and TalkBack (Android) verbal description capabilities.

Lighting in the galleries follows international standards for Museum Lighting lumens. Lighting may be dimmed in galleries that contain photographs or drawing to protect the art. Call the Museum for additional information on lighting for special exhibitions.

Full-Page Magnifiers are available upon request from the App/Info Station at the base of the circular stairway of the Museum. The magnifiers (8. 5inches x 11inches) are available on a first come, first served basis.

Visitors with Cognitive Impairment Needs
Quite hours are offered at the Museum on Sundays from 10am until 12noon. No public tours are offered during this time. The Museum also offers the Dr. Allan and Mrs. Janet Root Contemplation Room for visitors.

During the pivotal decade of the 1930s, Salvador Dalí emerged as the inventor of his own personal brand of Surrealism.

This exhibition—the first devoted to the Spanish Surrealist at the Art Institute—presents more than 30 paintings, drawings, photos, and surrealist objects, as well as a rich selection of printed matter, books, and artists ephemera to explore this critical period, considering Dalí’s work in light of two defining, if contradictory, impulses: an immense desire for visibility and the urge to disappear.

The artist cultivated these notions in a variety of ways: in path-breaking experiments with materials and palette, in depictions of exotic and mundane edible items, in surrealist fashions and sculptures with spaces for hiding, and in optically dynamic visual illusions or “double images.”

Examining this series of “disappearing acts” undertaken by the artist at the height of his fame, the exhibition brings together icons of the Art Institute’s Surrealism collection—such as Inventions of the Monsters (1937), Venus de Milo with Drawers (1936), and Mae West’s Face Which May be Used as a Surrealist Apartment (1934–35)—alongside celebrated loans from around the world. New technical analysis illuminates further hidden and disappearing imagery within Dalí’s works that offer veiled personal meditations on his wry, sophisticated, and ultimately paranoid approach to art making.

The famous Theater-Museum of the Catalan surrealist Salvador Dalí is located in the town of Figueres near the Spanish-French border, 140 km from Barcelona. For fourteen years the great hoaxer and outrageous genius worked on the creation of a monument to his beloved. Excursion to Salvador Dali Theater Museum in Figueres can be combined with a trip to the fishing town Cadaqués on the Costa Brava, not far from which is located house-museum of Salvador and Gala in Portlligat bay, with excursion to Girona 9005 or Château Poubol that Dali gave to his wife, or a visit to oyster farms in France . Another option for a combined tour is a visit to one of the Empordà wineries.

An excursion to the Salvador Dali Museum in Figueres can be done both by car and by train – comfortable AVE high-speed trains run from Barcelona to Figueres and Girona. The talent of Salvador Dali was recognized during his lifetime and immortalized in the museum exposition of the Theatre-Museum. One has to look at the works of this extravagant artist, wild and strange, representing an uncontrolled flow of the subconscious, to understand what is the secret of his success.

The Dali Theatre-Museum, the Galatea tower and part of the medieval walls of the city

The town of Figueres (cat. Figueres, Spanish Figueras) is located in Catalonia, an hour and a half from Barcelona. At 19Salvador Dali was born here in 04. In 1974, the artist’s museum appeared in Figueres. The Dali Theater-Museum (cat. Teatre-Museu Dalí; Spanish Teatro-Museo Dalí) – this is how the master called his gift to his native city. A bright orange-brown building with a roof decorated with huge eggs stands on Gala and Salvador Dalí Square (Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí). This is the world’s largest surreal exhibit.

The history of the creation of the museum

The idea of creating the Theater-Museum belonged to Dali himself. At 19In 61, the Mayor of Figueres asked the artist to donate one of his works to the city. Dali decided to donate a whole museum of surrealism.

Dali always lived playing, as if on stage, so he decided to place the exposition of his creations within the walls of the city theater. “Where else, if not in my city, should the most extravagant and fundamental of my works be preserved and live for centuries? What was left of the Municipal Theater seemed to me very suitable for three reasons: firstly, because I am, first of all, a theater artist; secondly, because the theater is opposite the church in which I was baptized; thirdly, it was in this theater, in its foyer, that I exhibited my paintings for the first time.

The building chosen by the artist was built in 1850. After a fire in 1939, the theater was in ruins. Only the remains of the outer walls, part of the foundation, some fragments of the seats and the stage have been preserved. Construction work began in 1970. A spherical dome was erected over the former stage. The hall was cleared, divided into sectors – for different artistic genres. The foyer was painted by Dali himself. In September 1974, the grand opening of the Theater-Museum took place.

The Dali Theater-Museum united 2 museum complexes. The first is located in the building of the former theater and was created by Dali himself (halls 1-18). This is a unique artistic ensemble, where each element is an inseparable part of the whole. The second complex represents a series of halls created in the course of various works on the expansion of the Theater-Museum (halls 19-22) due to the addition of a neighboring house, the Galatea tower and part of the medieval walls of the city.

The theater building looks three stories from the outside, but inside it is divided into five levels. The transparent “geodesic” dome above the stage was built by the architect Emilio Perez Pinheiro. The silhouette of the museum building, crowned with a ball, has now become the emblem of world pop art and the symbol of the city. The walls of the front facade of the museum were decorated with even rows of golden buns – bread was one of the favorite topics in Dali’s works. On the roof of the Galatea tower and along the eaves are giant eggs – another fetish of El Salvador.

They gave from the first experiments in the style of impressionism, futurism and cubism to the consolidation of an individual surrealistic style of writing and works of the last years of his life. The main part of the collection consists of paintings, drawings, sculptures, three-dimensional collages and installations of the master. The museum is divided into several thematic zones: the former theater with the main part of the exposition, the Gala tower and an extension with the late works of the master. A separate entrance leads to the Dali jewelry exhibition.

As conceived by the artist, the exposition of surrealist genres was to be a mystical labyrinth, where each spectator would make an exciting journey along his own route. Already on the square in front of the museum you can see the first exhibits. Opposite the main facade there is a composition dedicated to the philosopher Francesc Pujols. In the corner of Gala and Salvador Dali Square stands the work of Wolf Vostel – “Television Obelisk”. Many figures, installations and mannequins adorn the top, cornices, balconies of the building. On the steps of the museum, guests are greeted by a statue of Newton (if you can recognize the great scientist in this curved silhouette with a hole in his head). A little higher you can see a monumental sculpture by the artist Meissonier. The revered French painter Dali sat on a pedestal made of tractor tires. Unlike Newton, Meissonier looks quite recognizable, as in a self-portrait.

Antique doors with metal iron handles open the lobby to visitors. At the entrance there is a ticket office, on the right there is a staircase to the upper floors. In the niche of the wall there is a statue of Ganymede in a headdress embroidered with pearls. Through the huge windows you can see the courtyard.

The patio of the museum is a genuine open-air theater. Many of the works presented here serve as elements of a single illusory scenery. The center of the composition of the courtyard is the “Queen Esther” – a statue by Trista Fuchs, mounted on the hood of a Cadillac. This is the famous installation “Rainy Taxi”. A row of charred beams is visible on the walls of the building – the memory of the great fire. In the niche windows among the ivy there are figures of female deities. This anthem of surrealism is crowned with Gala’s overturned boat under a black umbrella.

Room-installation “Portrait of Mae West in the interior” The famous sofa “Lips” Nose – fireplace, eyes – paintings stage covered with a dome. It is dominated by a huge backdrop – the scenery for the ballet “Labyrinth”. Large-scale paintings by Dali are placed on the walls of the theater hall. This is followed by a series of rooms with installations and paintings, among them the Hall of Treasures, the room-face of Mae West, the Palace of the Wind. The exposition of the Galatea Tower presents Dali’s late works, mainly designed for a special optical perception. In this tower the master spent the last days of his life.

In addition to the works of Dali himself, other artists are represented in the museum – Anthony Pichot, Evariste Valles, El Greco, Fortuny, Urgell, Meissonier , Marcel Duchamp, William Bouguereau.

Dali bequeathed to be buried in the crypt under the dome – here, in the museum. And so it happened. His embalmed body rests in a crypt, the upper part of which is crowned with a slab of white marble set into the floor. The gravestone is visited daily by many visitors. Dali bequeathed all his fortune and creative heritage to Spain.

What is it? The National Art Museum of Catalonia, where you can get an excellent overview of Catalan art spanning from the 12th to the 20th centuries.
Why go? For the impressive Romanesque collection with ‘rescued’ 10th-century murals, the fantastic gothic collection, and the uniquely Catalan, Modernista collection. Plus, once you’ve climbed the steps up to the former castle, you’ve earned that stunning view of the city below.

2. Fundació Antoni Tàpies

What is it? Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies set up this space dedicated to the study and appreciation of contemporary art in 1984. Nowadays it’s a cultural centre and museum dedicated to Tàpies’s work and life.
Why go? To admire the building’s tangled crown of aluminium piping and metal netting outside; and inside, works by Tàpies, whose thing in the 1950s was using waste paper, mud and rags as part of his paintings (later he moved up to include the likes of whole pieces of furniture and running water).

What is it? It’s the Picasso Museum! The permanent collection features nearly 4,000 pieces, mainly showing off young Pablo’s formative years in art school, and his time later hanging out with Catalonia’s fin-de-siècle avant-garde.
Why go? For the unbeatable seamless presentation of the artist’s development from adolescent portraits to the intense innovations of his Blue Period; the gallery of mature Cubist paintings; and the inspired temporary exhibitions.

What is it? A former almshouse built on the site of a medieval monastery is now home to Barcelona’s Centre of Contemporary Culture, whose three halls feature ever-changing exhibitions with a leaning toward multimedia arts.

What is it? A museum where the roughly 300 works displayed are by Catalan artists, sculptors and photographers from the last 50 years or so, both unknown and internationally successful.
Why go? Arguably the star of the show is the building itself, a startling revamp that showcases the building’s original features but adds a new element of sharp angles and poured concrete, with sunlight streaming through plate glass to illuminate the displays in a refreshingly natural way.

What is it? Richard Meier’s hulking white behemoth of a museum signified a grand turnaround in the fortunes of the Raval neighbourhood and still shines as a beacon of modernity outside as well as in.
Why go? It houses the city’s main collection of contemporary art (which, in this instance means ‘post World War I’), and while its permanent holdings focus on Catalan and Spanish artists, temporary exhibitions have a more international flavour.
Top tip: Watch out for (or join in with) the skateboarders in the square out front who have made it their second home.

3) CCCB

A minute away from MACBA, the Centre for Contemporary Culture is a slightly more modest space (although the underground entrance and the staircases can compete with MACBA’s design) for thematic exhibitions about science, culture, design, photography, technology and more. It also hosts seminars and has a bookstore with an interesting collection.

4) Fundacío Joan Miró

Catalan artist Joan Miró has his own museum on Montjuïc hill. The collection used to be the artist’s: 10.000 works, mostly by Miró himself, but also items made by Alexander Calder, Mark Rothko and Marcel Duchamp. This is a major tourist attraction; so expect Mona Lisa-style throngs.

5) Museu Picasso

Would you like to get acquainted with the peculiarities of modern Spanish art? See the work of artists such as Antoni Tapies, Miguel Barcelo, Jean-Michel Basquiat? Then, once in Barcelona, you definitely need to set aside time to visit this museum.

Barcelona’s Museum of Contemporary Art (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, MACBA) opened its doors in 1995. The best works of the end of the last century and up to the present time are presented in its halls. The museum contains examples of art by masters of a wide variety of schools and trends: expressionists, modernists, as well as masterpieces of Catalan painters since the historicism of the Romanesque period. The museum’s collection is presented in three sections: 40-60 years, 60-70 years, contemporary art.

The main part of the museum’s exhibits are works by masters of Catalonia, as well as works by Spanish artists painted after 1945. However, some works of artists from abroad are also presented here.

Buildings MACBA

The Museum of Modern Art of Barcelona currently occupies three buildings in the Plaza de l’Angels (Plaça dels Àngels) in the Old City area. The main building of the museum, erected in the Art Nouveau style, stands out from the surrounding buildings and, with its appearance alone, sets everyone up for contemporary art. The snow-white main building has a glazed southern facade, from which museum guests can admire the square, where there are always a lot of young people and skateboard lovers.

The Monastery of the Angels (Convent dels Àngels) on the other side of the square is also part of a modern art museum. Now this building is used by him as a cultural center with additional exhibition space.

Another museum building on Àngels Square is the Research and Documentation Center (Centre d’Estudis i Documentació). It houses the MACBA Research and Education Center, as well as an archive and library dedicated to contemporary art.

Museu de la Xocolata – The chocolate museum of Barcelona

The chocolate museum Museu de la Xocolata shows the history of chocolate in Europe: its origins, how it got to us and how it was traded as an element between myth and reality, between medicine and food or as an aphrodisiac. It also shows the manufacturing of chocolate, from the cocoa bean up to industrial production processes.

The chocolate museum is one of the smaller museums in Barcelona. But none of the other museums will tickle your senses as much as this one. The smell of chocolate is all over the place, teasing your appetite, so the piece of chocolate that you receive at the entrance may not last for long. If you bring your kids with you on your trip to Barcelona, this museum will probably become their favourite.

Tour through the chocolate museum

At the beginning of the tour of the history of chocolate, you learn how chocolate was brought from South America to Europe by the Spanish conquerors. Columbus knew of the existence of cocoa, but he was not aware of its power. Without additional sweetening, the cocoa brought home by the Spaniards was not a very popular drink. But with the addition of sugar or honey, it soon made itself a reputation.
In the first hall, you also see the cocoa plants and the fruits of the tree.

In the second hall, you will learn about the recipe of “Xocoatl”, the cocoa drink of the Aztec and the importance of chocolate for the ancient cultures of Latin America such as the Aztec and the Maya.

The tour continues with the history of chocolate in Europe, its influence on art and bakery. Several works of art made of chocolate are on display here. Sculptures and paintings of famous artists are imitated. Unfortunately, these pieces of art are not meant for eating… you still got that piece of chocolate from the entrance?

A large section is devoted to the audio-visual presentation of the history and industrial production of chocolate. But the largest section of the museum shows the manufacturing of chocolate. Machines are on display, showing the different manufacturing processes – from the grinding of the dried cocoa beans up to the moulding of chocolate bars.

The “Sala Barcelona” features famous buildings of Barcelona as chocolate miniatures.

The Museu de la Xocolata regularly offers events, tours and workshops on the subject of chocolate (in Catalan, Spanish and English). You can, for example, learn how to make sculptures from chocolate. Check the website of the chocolate museum for a schedule.

Of course you can buy all kinds of chocolate variations and other sweets at the museum shop forming the entrance and exit area of the museum, and at the café you can taste the original Xocoatl.

A Surreal Experience!

We visited while on a short city break to Girona, which is only a fifteen minute train journey from Figueres. I had booked tickets online in advance, but there were still slots available on the day at the ticket office. It is a timed entry system, and they won’t let you in early, but it’s well organised. It is always very busy, and no-one was wearing masks, so if you feel vulnerable with Covid still being around, it might not be the place for you, as although the circulation works well, some spaces are pretty cramped.
We spent around two hours inside, including the Dali Jewels exhibition near the exit. The old theatre and stage areas are amazing spaces, and there are three floors with rooms and corridors to explore. Be prepared to queue in the Mae West room.
Although not big Dali fans, we’re glad we visited this quirky and iconic place. I had imagined it to be in a set apart location, but it was actually right in the middle of town. We arrived at Figueres Vilafant station on the high speed train from Girona, and took the bus into the centre. I think it might be closer to the other train station in Figueres, and possibly with a signposted walking route from other things I’ve read.
There isn’t a cafe in the museum, but you can find places to eat in the town.

Amazing experience

After 22 years, I made it to Figueres at a decent time. Visiting the museum is an amazing experience and absolutely recommended. I recommend to book the ticket in advance (they can get sold out!) and be on time to the entrance. Also next to the ticketing office, there is the possibility to book a guide and I would recommend to do so as it was worth it. It cost me additional 10 euro (alternatively, you can take the ticket including the guide directly in this ‘shop’. if you decide for this alternative, you need to go early as, at least on the day I was there, by 1200 all tickets were sold out). The guide tour last 1.5 hour and it covers only the museum-theatre. In total I spent about 2,5 hours in the building looking as well at the other extra’s and enjoying the atmosphere.

Unique museum

Likewise the author himself, this museum is quite unique and one of the most unusual you’ll ever visit.
It’s one of Catalonia’s most popular attractions, and certainly the main one in the eccentric artist hometown.
I expected the entry fee being even higher (compared to Barcelona popular attractions), so I found it OK. Exhibits are really perfect, unusual and interesting even for younger kids – count on around up to two hours for a visit.

The museum is chock full of an amazing array of Dali’s creative output, including the architectural experience. Unfortunately, the visiting process is poorly managed: several group visits occur simultaneously, some guides using dedicated earpieces ( like mine) others screaming out loud. Meanwhile free-range visitors are going back and forth through narrow passageways and overcrowded rooms and there is virtually no staff present. The visits could be managed as they are at the Dali house in Cadaques: every 5-10 minutes a guided visit of up to 9 people file through the building: no going back and forth, no free-range visitors in the interior spaces.

I’m a big Dali fan, the museum here is less than I expected. There is a lot more of his better work in St Petersburg, so its barely worth the trip from Barcelona. You are in fairly tight passages with large school and other groups. The gift shop is poor, their buyer should visit Miro in Barcelona or Pompidou in Paris to get some ideas. I was hoping to buy stuff and there was little to look at.

Pinnacle of Dalí in Figueres

A tremendous exposition of the genius that Dalí was, it begins with the building itself. Replete with his signature eggs and golden statuettes in numerous poses.

In the courtyard a female figure erect on a Cadillac is surrounded by many other sculptural creations.

A fine selection of his oeuvre is delightful. Family portraits, including his sister and of course a number of Gala are here.

His imagination takes off in pieces such as Venus and Sailor, Rotting Bird plus many more. A bed with serpentine creatures as legs is striking. A later composition showing Dalí about to tickle the sole of a woman’s foot is playful.

Venus de Milo with Drawers is another work that catches the attention. A take on one of his most famous paintings The Persistence of Memory is great to see, as were iterations of works featuring bread.

This is one of the most amazing museums we have ever seen. The exhibits are amazing but that is just Dali. One of the most amazing things is that Dali designed it and created it from a lost theatre. His hand literally has created works for this wonderful building. His works are fantastic, disturbing and amazing. This really is a wonderful museum set in a lovely city. I don’t profess to understand all the works of Dali but it does make you think and does give you the sense of wow!

When you factor in the travel costs and time as well as the fact that Figueres is an ugly little town with nothing else to do but the Dali museum, it’s not worth it. The museum really is only for die hard Dali fans. There are hardly any of his well known works in his style that he became known for. You’ll get a few pics of the building interior and exterior and there is nothing much beyond that.

The Salvador Dali museum is located in Figueres, a Spanish city 147 kilometers north of Barcelona. By car you will probably take 1 hour and 40 minutes from Barcelona. From Perpignan (France) you will find the city 56 kilometers south of the city. Because Figueres is on the E-15 (AP-7), the museum is therefore an ideal stopover when you visit Barcelona or Girona by car.

In the town of Figueres, 147 kilometers north of Barcelona, you can find one of the most beautiful attractions in Spain, the Dalí Theater Museum (Teatro Museo Dalí). The museum is one big surreal object and is located in a former theater. This 19th-century city theater was considerably destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, after which Salvador Dalí decided to set up his own museum in his native village on the ruins. When you are on vacation in the area, this legendary museum of Dalí should not be missed during your trip.

Salvador Dalí

Salvador Dalí (1904 – 1989) was a Spanish painter who had devoted himself to surrealism and is now one of the greatest artists in the world in this movement. In 1934, Dalí married Gala, the woman who was his great muse and to whom he had dedicated most of the work. In 1974 he opened his museum, after which he worked many years to further expand this museum. On January 23, 1989 Dalí died of a cardiac arrest in the Galatea tower. He was later buried in his own museum in a crypt under the glass dome of the museum. Dalí was also known for his thin, elongated mustache, whose mustaches were curled up. The mustache was inspired by the mustache of the famous Spanish painter, Diego Velázquez. Dalí claimed that he received inspiration from the cosmos through these whiskers.

The beautiful museum (both inside and out) is definitely accessible for people who love art less. Many creative objects, sketches and paintings can be admired in the surrealistic style of Salvador Dalí. You will get the feeling and wonder that you are truly entering the surrealistic world of Dalí and Gala, so that this museum will also be appreciated by many young visitors. Everything in and around the museum is by the hand and ideas of Salvador Dalí. The museum contains works of art from its early period (1917-1928), the surrealist (1929-1940) and its more classical period (1941-1983).

On average you will spend around two hours visiting the Dalí Theater-Museum, visiting all the highlights of the museum such as the Mae West room. Keep in mind that in high season the museum is so popular that there is a visitor limit, so it is strongly recommended to reserve your tickets in time during this period.

Castell Gala Dalí Púbol

40 km south from Figueres, near Girona, in the village of Púbol is the Gala Dalí Castle. The exterior is a magnificent castle from the 11th century, the interior of the castle is one of Dali’s great creative excesses, focused on one person, his muse Gala. Castell Gala Dalí Púbol was intended as the ultimate resting place for Gala, where she also spent her last years of her life. The castle can be visited (admission 8 euros, more info and tickets) and gives a wonderful glimpse into the life of his muse Gala and the special bond she had with Dalí.

House Salvador Dalí Portlligat

Theater-Museum of Salvador Dali (El Teatro-Museo Dalí)

They say all roads lead to Rome. In Figueres, all roads lead to the theater-museum of Salvador Dali, which opened its doors in 1974. A man whose name has become a household name in the environment of surrealism.

The man was not easy, with madness and even full-fledged outbursts. But he could burn to the same extent: with an idea, a dream, love. The city authorities asked for just one canvas, so that little Figueres and its inhabitants, doomed to oblivion earlier, but with the birth of a genius of art, to world fame; could admire the painting in the walls of the municipal museum. And Dali gave them a whole museum !

The first exhibition of the still nine-year-old Salvador was held within the walls of a real theatre. Perhaps that is why, when it came time to find a “home” for his masterpieces, Dali did not reinvent the wheel. The building, battered by the Civil War, was three times ideal for turning into the holy of holies: in addition to the fact that the first works of the future surrealist were presented here; Spectacularity is, in principle, Dali’s forte, plus the artist was baptized in the church opposite.

The municipal authorities without delay handed over the “ruins” into the hands of Dali, who over the next 14 years, literally on the ruins of the foundation, recreated his vision of the “shell” of creative results.

What did this splendor cost El Salvador? At first, the General Directorate of Fine Arts of Madrid refused to give the green light to the restructuring and others like it, because Dali wanted to exhibit only reproductions, not originals. The nerves were frayed, but they were “lit up” for a priori work. And if we calculate the sale in money, then it cost Dali all his savings. Friends, admirers and ordinary people of Figueres, along with the government, also helped. And voila, 28 September 1974 years the show started…

What did Dali want? And so that everyone who crosses the museum threshold, akin to Alice falling down the rabbit hole, gets into another dimension; I forgot my way back, driven by irresistible curiosity, and along the way I went a little crazy. Did the genius succeed in realizing such a bold desire? Oh quite!

The bright carmine-colored building, on which golden buns ran like specks, is crowned with giant eggs – it’s hard not to notice. Crossing the threshold of the museum, you find yourself in the looking glass, a parallel world and the theater of the absurd at the same time .

The uniqueness of the nutra-exposition is not so much in weaving the threads of madness into the canvas of genius, but also in Dali’s own veto on any interpretation of the works by the museum staff.

Visitors will not hear an explanation and will not receive a “key” to unravel the meaning of this or that masterpiece. So wanted the author, who dreamed of awakening the imagination of everyone, unraveling the originality and forcing them to change the trajectory of the usual view of reality.

You can look at this or that brainchild of Dali’s hands for hours, thinking about how a person came up with the idea to mount boxes in the body of Venus de Milo? Or, is the room-face with sofa-lips and painting-eyes really the image of the famous Marilyn?

At some point, you can catch yourself that the halls began to repeat themselves, but over and over again they look in a new way, misleading tourists. The real “Hotel California”!

Under the dome of the patio, called “Peace” unthinkable dizzy, space is as if put on the wrong side of reality . Faceless mannequins, frozen in various poses, are observed from wall niches. Creepy? Not that word! But these are still flowers, berries are waiting in the Crypt, in which the embalmed body of Dali himself rests, preserved here, and in this form by his own order. Although … the sun with a Chinese head in the core, shining in a rooster’s belly – the sculpture is no less frightening.

Three floors magically turn into six , thanks to the multi-level layout of the first one. Here you get lost, you are born again, you rethink from and to, and when you get into the usual fuss and see the average human mass and the usual reality, you doubt whether you dreamed about what you saw a minute ago. Didn’t dream. This is eloquently reminded by a figure, symbolizing Newtonian discoveries in physics, installed not far from the museum.

The face of Salvador Dali himself is immortalized in the manner characteristic of his work by the inhabitants of the city at the source of the main street of Figueres – the Rambla.

Joan Miró Foundation Museum – Barcelona Happyinspain Guide

Joan Miró is considered one of the most important Spanish avant-garde artists of the 20th century, whose life and work are inextricably linked with Barcelona. Miró, like Dali, who worked in the genre of surrealism, is the real pride of Catalonia. Always advocating the accessibility of art, in 1975 he conceived and created his own Foundation.

“No, the Miro Foundation is not a museum. I would not want it to be something cold, frozen, dead… Young artists will come here to work and exhibit their works” , Miro says.

The Joan Miro Foundation is located on the northern slope of Montjuïc, behind the National Palace. The building was designed specifically for the museum by the artist’s friend, the architect Josep Lewis Sert, a student of Le Corbusier. It has become an icon of modern architecture. The system of arches between the halls and glass roofs provide the museum with natural light during the day.

In the center of the museum complex there is a courtyard in a traditional Mediterranean style, around which various exhibition halls are concentrated. The room “Espai 13″ on the ground floor hosts temporary exhibitions of works by young artists, while the terrace on the second floor offers spectacular views of Barcelona.

The permanent collection focuses on Miro’s signature style of basic colors and simplified organic shapes representing the stars, moon, birds and women, occupying half of the museum. Most of the works were donated to the museum by the author himself.

Walking around Barcelona, you can see other of his creations in very unexpected places. For example, on the pavement of the Rambla, not far from the Liceu opera, you can see his mosaic, and in the l’Escorxador park there is one of the artist’s most famous sculptures, Woman and Bird.

The Fund contains more than 14,000 works by Joan Miró, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics and textiles, as well as a complete collection of graphic drawings and sketches, everything from the first works created in Barcelona and Paris to the avant-garde.

Joan Miro was born in Barcelona in 1893 and died in Palma de Mallorca in 1983. His work can be divided into several periods. Until 1919, Miró was under the influence of cubism, he even met Picasso in Paris. The theme of his work was landscapes, portraits and nudes. Later he turned to surrealism. Joan Miró received international recognition at 1928, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York exhibited two of his works.

The most significant of his works were created during the Spanish Civil War and combined the reflection of all the horror of what was happening and the dreamy side of his nature. In the end, nature won out and Joan returned to his classical and slightly ingenuous form of seeing the world – birds, stars, female figures.

From a commercial point of view, Joan Miró is one of the best-selling contemporary artists. His abstract compositions are valued for their decorativeism, perfect for bank halls and luxurious villas on the Cote d’Azur.

Accessibility	The Salvador Dali museum is located in Figueres, a Spanish city 147 kilometers north of Barcelona. By car you will probably take 1 hour and 40 minutes from Barcelona. From Perpignan (France) you will find the city 56 kilometers south of the city.
