Barcelona Olympic Stadium on the map
Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium is located on Montjuïc and dates back to 1927. It was in this year that the Lewis Companys Olympic Stadium graced the city.
The Barcelona Olympic Stadium does not specialize in one sport. Its versatility allowed it to be used as the main arena at 1992 year.
The Barcelona Olympic Stadium was rebuilt twice, in 1989 and 1992.
History of the Barcelona Olympic Stadium
The Barcelona Olympic Stadium was named after Luis Companys, who was President of Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War. Its history is full of interesting facts:
- On May 20, 1929, this stadium was opened with a football match in which the Catalan national team beat the English team Bolton Wanderers 4:0
- Until 1955, in which the Mediterranean Games were held, the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona was in demand and popular, but then the stadium was abandoned for a while, it fell into disrepair
- After Barcelona became the venue for the 1992 Olympics, the most famous and experienced architects began to reconstruct the stadium and it has changed a lot.
From the old Olympic Stadium, only the outer facade remained, everything else was reconstructed and completely changed, so very spacious stands appeared. This is how the spectators of the Olympics-9 saw the renovated Olympic Stadium2.
- Montjuïc’s decoration is the Olympic Ring, which consists of the main objects of the 1992 Olympics.
- Barcelona, having put forward its candidacy for the right to host the Olympic Games in 1936, considered that the stadium should bear the proud title of Olympic. It was assumed that they would become an example of peaceful relations between states in a tense period of Nazi aggression. But the phrase of General Franco, spoken the day before the opening, changed everything. The signal for a coup in Spain was the words: “Over all of Spain, a cloudless sky.” Then the democratic Olympics could not be held.
- After the 1992 Olympics, the stadium was not empty, the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona becomes the venue for the games of the Espanyol Spanish Primera club.
- Not only the local teams of Spain and Catalonia meet at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, the team of Andorra becomes a frequent guest here. This is a forced measure – football is very popular in Andorra, and the largest stadium in the country can accommodate about 1,300 spectators.
- Barcelona Olympic Stadium can accommodate 55 926 spectators. If the need arises, as, for example, it happened during the 1992 games, up to 70,000 sports fans can be accommodated at the Olympic stadium.
