Way to the top part 2
Colombian downhill racer Marcelo Gutierrez has spent the last 10 years traveling the world and downhill. Now in his new role as a Giant rider, Marcelo tackles the opposite challenge: he overcomes the steepest climbs in Colombia.
Giant rider Marcelo Gutierrez climbs El Crucero in Colombia
Earlier this year, Marcelo climbed the Alto de Letras, the most famous highway climb in a country rich in such roads. You can read about this adventure here.
For the second ascent, Marcelo chose a mountain that is less known, but no less significant in every way. The path of El Crucero starts in Casanare and stretches over 90 km from the foot to the top. The total climb is almost 4000 meters.
“This is undoubtedly the longest climb in Colombia,” says Marcelo. “He is different from Alto de Letras. Alto de Letras starts out pretty steep right off the bat, but the last 20km is a real pain in the ass. Damn steep road, which is given especially hard after such a long climb. This path is also quite steep in the beginning, but the last 20 km are just great and feel like a walk. There is an opportunity to keep a good pace, and the views are simply amazing. Therefore, in general, El Crucero is easier. They can enjoy it.”
During this climb, Marcelo tested his abilities on a new bike. For the past year, he has ridden a Defy Advanced Pro, an endurance-oriented road bike. For El Crucero, he switched to a TCR Advanced SL Disc, a full race bike.
“This is an amazing bike,” says Marcelo. “He’s very comfortable and certainly more aggressive.”
It’s been more than a year since Marcelo started mixing both sports – he started riding more road bikes and stopped training directly for the Downhill World Championships. He gladly changed his lifestyle and says he likes to challenge himself with new challenges. In addition to changing schedules and priorities, he also faced some changes in his body.
“Some friends and family say I’m slimmer now,” he says. – Perhaps because now I pedal much more and pumped the muscles on my legs well. Also, maybe my upper body got a little thinner. But I still haven’t reached my desired weight and I’m constantly looking for ways to do so.”

“In addition to the physical changes, there are other changes: climbs like this require a lot of pedal work, and when I get back on a mountain bike after that, I feel a little awkward at first. But then, after a couple of days on the downhill circuit, I feel confident again. Also, since I stopped competing in downhill, I don’t run much. Probably, now I would have overcome the sprint distances more slowly.
In Colombia, above 3,000 meters the weather is unpredictable. While climbing El Crucero, Marcelo faced rain, wet roads and low temperatures. However, he kept going. As usual, he achieved his goal of finishing in less than 5 hours. In the end, he reached this goal with a margin of time, finishing in 4:44:44.
Evaluating his walk overall, Marcelo says he was delighted to be in the top 10 on the Strava app, but more importantly, he is happy to share his success and also draw attention to this rise in his home country, which many they just don’t know.

“This route is less famous than the Alto de Letras,” he said. – For comparison, at Alto de Letras I was in the top 100, and there were several very famous athletes ahead of me. On some climbs here in Colombia you can find the names of professionals like Rigoberto Urán, Nairo Quintana and others of their level. But there are no such big names on the climbs of the Crucero. And yet, I am a former downhill racer, and this is one of the longest climbs in the world, and I finished sixth.”
Test passed. And for Marcelo, this is the main thing. “You don’t have to prove anything to anyone,” he says. – Just enjoy. Test yourself. Create difficulties for yourself. Do not hurry. After that, set yourself more challenging goals. That’s what’s great in life and cycling. This gives you the opportunity to have a great time in good company and visit amazing places.”
Where will Marcelo go next? Stay with us.
