Ye Olde King’s Head (or just King’s Head, for those more familiar) is undeniably the most famous British pub in Santa Monica, and maybe all of LA. That’s due in no small part to the pub’s location so close to the beach, but it’s also a reflection of the place’s 40-plus-year legacy.

Houston’s Best Pub Breakfasts | Houstonia Magazine
Traditional English breakfast at The Red Lion.
Image: Justin Calhoun
A full English breakfast is so delicious and so satisfying, once you finish it, you can count on skipping lunch and waiting until teatime to eat again. While on holiday, I’ve personally endured many a fusty room and boring bed-and-breakfast conversation, secure in the knowledge that I’d get a home-cooked version of this meal when I got up in the morning.
The only place to find a decent British breakfast in Houston is a pub. The “full English” at The Red Lion is the best version I’ve sampled, an intricate assemblage of two sunny-side-up eggs perched on a rasher of Irish bacon, which in turn rests atop a pile of sautéed mushrooms. A large link of mild English sausage, partially obscured by several sliced, sautéed tomatoes, lies across the middle of the plate, acting as a dam to hold back a huge pool of Heinz beans. A basket of unbuttered toast is served on the side, perfect for mopping up beans and yolk. It’s a lovely breakfast, if oddly hard to come by.
The English breakfast is nowhere to be found on the Red Lion’s menu. When I asked a waitress about it one weekday at lunchtime, she denied that the restaurant even served it. “Try asking on a Saturday or Sunday,” a regular sitting at the bar whispered when the server walked away. So I returned early on a Sunday afternoon and sure enough, a different waitress proved happy to oblige.
The Richmond Arms’s breakfast is nearly identical to the Red Lion’s on weekend mornings (during those soccer matches mentioned above). It also is not on the pub’s regular menu, though it is mentioned in the sports-schedule section of its website.
I was excited when I found a reasonable facsimile of an English breakfast described on the Sunday brunch menu at The Firkin & Phoenix. And I was equally distraught when I showed up one early Sunday afternoon to discover they no longer serve it. Instead, I was handed a brunch menu that included a lot of Mexican dishes like eggs with green chiles and taco truck tacos (to be fair, the pub still offers English-style sausage rolls).
The weekend breakfast menu at The Bull & Bear is extensive, and the place gets extra points for offering the extremely authentic British breakfast dish that is beans on toast. But “The Bull & Bear Breakfast,” the pub’s version of a full English, isn’t too exciting. It includes two fried eggs, a puddle of Heinz beans, and Irish bacon—but the sausages are of the mini-American link variety and the hash browns are bland and extraneous. Other breakfasts include corned beef hash and eggs and a 10-ounce ribeye steak with eggs, both of which are pleasant enough, but not worth going out of your way for.
The Houston pub breakfast that I miss the most was served at Slainte Irish Pub, an establishment that was located downtown, on Main St., but went out of business a few years ago. The plate included eggs and Irish bacon along with black and white pudding and English tea in a proper teapot. Now that was a breakfast.
9 cafes in St. Petersburg that will delight you with delicious food in the morning

likes to have a delicious breakfast

I love to have breakfast outside the home.
Sometimes I go out to a cafe or restaurant to save time and effort, and sometimes to try unexpected gastronomic combinations. Even on weekends, it’s great to meet friends for breakfast: it’s easier to book a table than in the evening, and service is usually faster.
I have prepared a list of places in St. Petersburg where you can start your day tasty and pleasant. For convenience, I have collected all the listed cafes on the map:

STIM
Addresses: Civil, 13 -15; Kronverksky prospect, 45
More details: on the website
Breakfast menu: every day from 10:00 to 20:00
STIM is a coffee shop serving 10 types of cheesecakes. All combinations cost 300 R and bear the names of characters from cult series. For example, syrniki with tofu and banana are called “Phoebe” – in honor of Phoebe from “Friends”, and with cherries and poppy seeds – “Audrey”, this is a character from “Twin Peaks”. My favorites are “House” with blackcurrant, raspberry and hazelnuts.
Hearty items include Avocado Toast, Eat Meat Chicken Breast Sandwich, Creamy Scramble, Red Fish Benedict.
The cafe has delicious desserts. They are different every day, so check the menu at the counter. There is almost always a Banoffee cake. It is sweet and very tasty, it contains almond base, bananas, cream cheese and boiled condensed milk.
STIM will not be left without a cup of morning coffee: the filter is served for 140 R, flat white – for 180 R, there are other positions. Cocoa costs 280 R. Any drink can be prepared with vegetable milk.

Charlie
Address: Griboedov Canal Embankment, 54
More details: on the website
Breakfast menu: every day from 09:00 to 22:00
Charlie will keep you in the festive mood in the morning – every breakfast will be served with a free sparkling glass in a refined glass. Here, pink flamingos are painted on the walls, and pleasant music plays in the speakers. This is a great place for breakfast with friends overlooking the Griboyedov Canal. It is better to book a table in advance.
There is a large selection of cereals with interesting toppings. I advise you to try millet porridge with honey, pumpkin and custard for 390 R, corn porridge with stewed strawberries, stracciatella and halva for 510 R and amaranth porridge with coconut milk with blackcurrant jam for 450 R.

Where to dine in St. Petersburg: 15 proven restaurants

For any meal, I advise you to take a creamy croissant with a sweet filling or with strawberries and a banana.

The Gran is quiet and peaceful, the cafe is ideal for a leisurely breakfast. I often came here for lunch if I didn’t have time to eat in the morning. Tables are not booked.

I tried shakshuka with feta and ciabatta for 450 R. The portions are large, the breakfast turned out to be hearty. I wanted to try desserts, but they didn’t fit me. And it’s a pity, it should be delicious: the brand confectioner of the Forgot Sugar chain is responsible for the sweets in Muka.
