  1. Part of the premises is closed to the public (school building and tower) due to complexity keep a safe distance between people. The Gaudi House Museum is also temporarily closed due to Covid-19
  2. Tickets can only be bought online

General rules for visiting the Basilica Sagrada Familia in 2023:

  • buy tickets online
  • wear a mask throughout the temple and house museum
  • keep a distance of 2 meters
  • use hand sanitizer before and after security checks (all products are provided)

Admission is strictly along the route in one direction: entrance to Carrer de la Marina (street from the side of the Nativity facade), exit Carrer de Sardenya (street from the side of the Passion facade) or through the museum (street of the Nativity).

Basic information

Sagrada Familia is called the most famous “long-term construction” in Europe. Its construction began in Barcelona in 1882 and has not been completed to this day. Recently, due to the increased number of donations and tickets sold, construction work is being carried out much faster.

Their completion was scheduled for 2026 – it was assumed that it was then that the temple could be seen in all its splendor. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the date has been pushed back indefinitely. But even now, when some of the towers are hidden by scaffolding, the Sagrada Familia makes an unforgettable impression.

The temple was originally planned to be built in neo-Gothic
style, but when Antonio Gaudi joined the project, the main idea was
almost completely revised. From the side of the Sagrada Familia, it reminds
sand castle, that was the idea of the architect.

When construction is completed, the height of the main tower (Christ) will be 172.5 meters. Thus, after the completion of the work, the Sagrada Familia will become the highest Christian church in the world.

Although Sagrada Familia was consecrated in
2010, formally the land on which it stands does not belong to the church, and since
from the very first day, construction is carried out exclusively on private
donations.

Construction of the Sagrada Familia

External decoration

The temple was designed in the form of a Latin cross. He has three
facade:

  • Nativity facade
  • Passion facade
  • Glory facade

At the moment only two of them are ready: Christmas facade
and the Passion façade.

Nativity facade was completed during Gaudí’s lifetime. He
divided into three portals, symbolizing the three Christian virtues – faith,
hope and mercy (love).

This is the main entrance to the temple, it is decorated with bas-reliefs and
sculptural compositions illustrating scenes from the bible. In design
facade of the Nativity used various natural motifs – images of plants
and animals, and above the scene of the birth of Christ, symbolizing eternal life, rises
green cypress surrounded by white birds.

Photo: Facade of the Sagrada Familia

Facade of the Passion is on the opposite side
temple. In contrast to the Nativity façade, it is much more gloomy and concise.

According to the architect’s idea, the images in the facade portals should symbolize human sins and cause fear. Angular grotesque figures and gloomy plots, in the center of which the crucifixion of Christ, contrast sharply with the facade of the Nativity, where life is in full swing.

Facade of Glory was started in 2002 and has not been completed yet.
The original project was lost, but subsequently restored in separate
materials preserved after the death of Gaudí.

Each of the three facades will be crowned with 4 towers in honor of the 12 apostles, 4 more in honor of the apostles-evangelists, and one more in honor of Jesus and Mary.

Total 18 towers ; 8 of them are ready and 6 are under construction now.

Interior decoration

The interior of the temple, like the main facade, is inspired by
natural motives. There are no right angles, and the slender rows of columns resemble
forest. This impression is complemented by stained-glass windows that fill the space of the temple with bright colors.
paints.

For an additional fee, you can climb the observation
platforms located in the towers (bell towers) of both facades. From the northern platform
overlooking the city, from the south – the bay and Montjuic. Rise to the top
carried out by elevator, you can go down the spiral staircase.

Antonio Gaudí himself was buried in the crypt of the Sagrada Familia,
there is also a museum dedicated to the construction of the temple.

A few tips for visiting Sagrada Familia in 2023:

  1. Dress properly. Despite the fact that the temple has not yet been completed, it is considered to be active, so the dress code must be observed. Transparent clothes, open shoulders, deep necklines, skirts and shorts shorter than mid-thigh, as well as beachwear are not allowed.
  2. Don’t take too much with you. Before entering, you must go through security control – metal detector frames and inspection of personal belongings (bags and backpacks). With a large suitcase, they may not be allowed inside.
  3. Learn the rules. Eating, drinking and smoking are prohibited inside the temple. It is forbidden to use professional photo and video equipment (including shooting from a tripod) without special permission.
  4. Try saving . Sagrada Familia – a functioning temple, daily at 9Mass is held there in the morning. This is an opportunity to get into the temple for free, but you will have to come in advance to take a place (a limited number of people are allowed inside). Photography during worship is prohibited.
  5. Choose Monday evening . It is difficult to single out a “good” or “bad” time to visit the Sagrada Familia. There are always quite a lot of tourists, and the queue is built almost from the very opening. However, some tourists report that the crowds are much smaller on Mondays. It is also worth noting the last 2-3 hours before closing. Despite discounts, most visitors tend to get into the temple in the morning (especially organized groups). There are usually more tourists on weekends than on weekdays.
