(born 1985). In January 2009 Portuguese soccer (association football) player Cristiano Ronaldo was voted the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Player of the Year for 2008. He went on to earn world player of the year honors four more times (2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017). Ronaldo was considered by many to be the most gifted soccer player of his generation.

Early Years

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on February 5, 1985, in Funchal, Portugal. He started playing soccer when he was 9 years old. At age 15 Ronaldo was diagnosed with a heart condition that necessitated surgery, but he was sidelined only briefly and made a full recovery. He debuted on Sporting Clube de Portugal’s first team in 2002. A successful season with Sporting brought the young player to the attention of Europe’s biggest soccer clubs. In 2003 he signed with Manchester United, becoming the first Portuguese player to join the celebrated British squad.

Club and National Team Sensation

Ronaldo was an instant sensation with United and soon came to be regarded as one of the best forwards in the game. In 2007–08 he earned the Golden Shoe award as Europe’s leading scorer. He led United to a Champions League title in May 2008. He fueled the team’s run to the 2009 Champions League final, which they lost to FC Barcelona.

In addition to his success with United, Ronaldo was a staple of the Portuguese national team after his debut in August 2003. Portugal was the host of the 2004 European Championship, during which Ronaldo scored two goals and helped his side reach the final against Greece. But Ronaldo and Portugal failed to score against the Greeks and lost 1–0. Two years later, Portugal proved to be one of the most spectacular teams in the 2006 World Cup, with Ronaldo helping the squad to a fourth-place finish. He became the full-time captain of the national team in 2008. In 2012 his stellar play led Portugal to the semifinals of the European Championship, where his team was eliminated by rival Spain in a match that was decided by a penalty kick shoot-out.

In the spring of 2009 the soccer world was shaken when powerhouse team Real Madrid of La Liga, the top Spanish soccer league, announced that Ronaldo was leaving Manchester United to join the Spanish team for a record-breaking transfer of $132 million. The transfer made Ronaldo the most expensive player in soccer history. His scoring prowess continued with his new team. During the 2010–11 season he netted the most goals (40) in La Liga history (his record was broken the following season by his rival Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona). In 2011–12 Ronaldo helped Madrid capture a La Liga championship and scored a personal-best 46 goals during the season.

Ronaldo scored a total of 66 goals in 56 appearances with Madrid and the Portuguese national team in 2013 to earn his second world player of the year award (the FIFA World Player of the Year was renamed the FIFA Ballon d’Or in 2010). In 2014 he scored 52 goals in 43 games and led Madrid to a Champions League title, which resulted in Ronaldo capturing another Ballon d’Or award. Ronaldo’s play during the 2014 World Cup was spotty, however, and the entire Portugal team struggled during a group-stage elimination.

In 2015–16 Ronaldo scored 35 La Liga goals and helped Real Madrid win its record 11th Champions League title. He also helped Portugal win the 2016 European Championship, the country’s first major international tournament title. In December 2016 he won a fourth career Ballon d’Or for his accomplishments. Ronaldo scored 42 goals for Madrid across all competitions in 2016–17. He led his team to La Liga and Champions League titles that season, which resulted in a fifth career Ballon d’Or award. In 2017–18 he scored 44 goals in 44 games, and Madrid won a third straight Champions League title.

Ronaldo played brilliantly at the 2018 World Cup. He scored four goals in four games as Portugal advanced to the knockout round. However, his team lost its first match of that stage to Uruguay. In July 2018 Ronaldo left Real Madrid and signed a four-year contract worth about $132 million with the Italian powerhouse Juventus. He led Juventus to two consecutive Italian Serie A league titles, in 2018–19 and 2019–20.

In August 2021 Ronaldo returned to play for Manchester United. He netted 18 goals during the 2021–22 Premier League season, leading United in that category and ranking third overall in the league. Ronaldo left the club in November 2022.

Ronaldo’s career with the Portuguese national team continued. In September 2021, during a qualifying match against Ireland for the 2022 World Cup, he broke Iranian soccer player Ali Daei’s all-time record for international career goals (109). Ronaldo notched his 110th and 111th international goals during the match, a 2–1 victory for Portugal. Ronaldo achieved another milestone at the World Cup. When he netted a goal in Portugal’s opening match against Ghana, he became the first male player in history to have scored a goal at five World Cups. Ronaldo played a reserve role for Portugal once the team reached the knockout stage. Portugal lost to Morocco in the quarterfinals.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s biography

Cristiano Ronaldo (full name: Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro) is the greatest player in modern football who played for the clubs Sporting (Portugal), Manchester United (England), Real Madrid (Spain), Juventus (Italy) , for the national team of Portugal, who set more than a dozen records.

Pictured: Cristiano Ronaldo

His track record includes many beautiful goals, awards and titles. Among them are a victory in the European Championship, in the UEFA Nations League, a record five victories in the Champions League, as well as five Golden Ball awards for the best football player of the year in Europe and four Golden Boot awards for the best striker of the European championships.

A charismatic, talented and outwardly attractive striker is recognized by many experts as the most gifted and versatile football player in the world. He is incredibly technical, fast, smart and hardy, has a unique free-kick, is able to equally flawlessly score the ball into the opponent’s goal with both his right and left foot and masterfully hits from anywhere in the field.

The merits of the leader of the Portuguese national team before the country are marked by the national knightly order of the Infante don Enrique and the Order of Merit. In Ronnie’s hometown (as the football star is called by fans), a museum named after him and a monument more than three meters high appeared.

Three-meter monument to a football player

Scientists at the University of Lisbon even immortalized the name of the famous compatriot in the sky, naming the new discovered galaxy CR7 in his honor. The name of the versatile athlete is also the airport of the island of Madeira, where one of his two bronze busts is installed (the one that netizens found very awkward and created many Internet memes). The second is on display at the Real Madrid Museum.

Childhood

The future superstar of world football was born on February 5, 1985 years in Funchal, the port city of the island of Madeira, known as the birthplace of Madeira wine. The boy’s father, José Dinis Aveiro, served as equipment manager at the local FC Andorinha (Swallows). Mom, Maria Dolores dos Santos Avey, worked as a cook and cleaner.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s parents in their youth

Relatives have already raised three children of the same age: daughter Elma (1974), son Ugu (1975) and youngest daughter Liliana Katia (1976). The family lived modestly in a small house overlooking the ocean. All four children shared one room in it.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s brother and sisters

The name “Ronaldo”, which is sometimes mistaken for a surname (actually the surname of the football player Aveiro), was supplemented with the first name of the future football prodigy. The football player received a middle name in honor of his father’s favorite film actor – Ronald Reagan, at that time no longer an actor, but the President of the United States.
The forward warmly recalled his far from simple childhood years. Parents worked hard and tried to ensure that the children received everything they needed and did not need anything. Although, the footballer admitted bitterly, his father was drunk almost every day. It was difficult to communicate with him.

Cristiano Ronaldo as a child

But the most expensive of all gifts, which has become a family heirloom, to this day for Ronaldo remains a soccer ball received from dad when the boy barely learned to walk. Jose suffered from alcohol addiction for many years and died early, at the age of 52, before he could see all the outstanding sports successes of his son.

The future of the youngest son was largely determined by his father’s work in a football club. He introduced him to a wonderful game right from birth, asking him to be the godfather of the baby captain of the Andorinha team, Fernao Souza. From an early age, the boy did not part with his father’s gift and honed his skills on the streets of the city outskirts of Santo António. Constantly practicing with the ball and becoming the best footballer among friends, he received the nickname “Kluivert” after the legendary Dutch player.

Mom noticed a lot of natural inclinations in her son. For example, he had a good basis in the form of lightness, good looks and flexibility to become an excellent dancer or gymnast, had a pleasant voice and could achieve success in the musical field. But she saw how enthusiastically he was chasing the ball and agreed that his father enrolled him at the age of 6 in the football section at his club.

Andorinha, the first FC in the career of Cristiano Ronaldo (second from left in the second row)

The boy knew about the importance in football not only of personal skills, but also of relationships in the team, the ability to find mutual understanding with partners on the field, and attended training sessions with pleasure. From the very first days, he was distinguished from other guys by perseverance, brilliant possession of the ball, high speed and a passionate desire to win.

First steps in big sport

In 1995, the first transfer took place in the life of Cristiano. He was bought from the “Swallows” by the leading club of the island “Nacional”, who paid for the transfer of the future world football star with several balls, a two-year set of boots and uniforms. Another city professional FC, Maritimo, also wanted to outbid the 10-year-old nugget, but preference was given to Nacional, where his godfather also moved.

Young Cristiano Ronaldo in FC Nacional

In the new team, nimble, thin and fearless Ronaldo grew rapidly in skill. Coaches exposed the talented ward to games with older rivals, which made him progress quickly, learn to think and react to situations with lightning speed. He was nicknamed “Abelinha” (“Bee”) – for diligence and speed, as if on wings, moving across the field. By the age of twelve, he was already recognized as the best football player in Madeira.

For lightning speed the boy was nicknamed the bee

In 1997, the young talent was sent to the capital FC Sporting for viewing. For the first time in his life, he then flew on an airplane (accompanied by his mother). But this circumstance did not concern him. He was excited about something else – the event itself, the chance to get into one of the best clubs in Portugal. And he did not miss it – he played brilliantly in a match with older players and was bought by the Lisbon youth academy for 22.5 thousand euros, despite his young age (to write off the debt of his previous club to Sporting).

Lisbon

The first time in the capital, away from home, relatives and friends, 12-year-old Cristiano was not easy. He was bored, endured ridicule about his speech (the island dialect was different from Lisbon), cried into the phone and asked his mother to take him home. But a great desire to play and be the first helped him overcome all difficulties.

All his free time, the restless boy worked out in the gym, trying to achieve the best results. Because of this, he often had to do his homework at night. Against the background of constant physical and moral stress, the character of Cristiano became explosive and irreconcilable. At the age of 14, he launched a chair at a mentor when he behaved, according to the football player, “disrespectfully.” There was a case when Ronaldo could not cope with his emotions after his own unsuccessful performance and expressed his annoyance by defeating the dressing room.

Cristiano Ronaldo at Sporting FC

At the age of 15, the young athlete ended up on the operating table. His life was threatened by cardiac arrhythmia, fortunately detected in time. Doctors did not advise him to continue playing football professionally. Three days after the operation, the purposeful young man returned to training.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s very first interview at age 16

He went down in the history of the club by showing unprecedented hard work and growth in skill – he became the only pupil who managed to play in one season for all the teams of the Lisbon Lions (as the Sporting players were called). Namely, for teams of boys under 16, under 17, under 18, as well as in doubles and in the main team.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s debut performance for Sporting took place in 2001, when he was only 16 years old. He entered the field in the second half of a friendly match with the local Atlético FC and scored a goal on the move. In the same year, he brilliantly played for the national team in the European Junior Championship. At the age of 17, Ronaldo won the country’s Super Cup, although he did not participate in the match then.

Sporting became the launching pad for his dizzying career

Many leading clubs in Europe, including Barcelona, Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid, became interested in the talented debutant. One of the first “buyers” was Gerard Houllier of Liverpool FC. But the contract was offered to the football player not by him, but by Sir Alex Ferguson, the titled coach of the English Manchester United. This happened in 2003, when the Red Devils came to Portugal and played a friendly match with Sporting, unexpectedly losing 3-1. As a result of the transfer, the club then received about 15 million euros for him. 700 times more than he gave 6 years ago to Nacional.

England

Since 2003, the Portuguese continued his way to the football Olympus in the high-class Manchester United team. At first, he was greatly supported by an experienced mentor Alex Ferguson. He handed Cristiano a T-shirt with number seven, which previously belonged to the greatest players in history – George Best, David Beckham, Eric Canton, which became an additional factor in motivating the young athlete. And the Portuguese immediately proved that he was worthy of the honor.

Cristiano Ronaldo wore number 7 for Manchester United

Ronaldo’s first goal for the English superclub was scored from a free-kick in the top nine with no chance for the goalkeeper in a 3-0 win over Portsmouth in November. And in the spring of 2004, the fans of the “Red Devils” have already recognized him as the best player of the season, more than once applauding the young football genius standing. He finished the season by scoring the winning goal against Millwall in the FA Cup Final and earning his first football trophy in Foggy Albion.

Christiano Ronaldo and Alex Ferguson

His salary increased from 2,000 euros per month to 20,000 per week. He spent it not on himself, but on helping his family. Thanks to him, my mother stopped working, my brother was eventually able to recover from drug addiction and become a decorative artist. The eldest of the sisters received a chain of boutiques called CR7, and the youngest began to sing under the stage name “Ronalda”.

In early 2005, a footballer scored a goal and provided an assist against Aston Villa. Then two goals were on his account in the game with Arsenal. In September, while in Moscow and preparing for the match with the Russian national team, Cristiano received the sad news of his father’s death. The coach helped him cope with emotional experiences. But soon a new test fell upon the young man – an accusation of gang rape of a girl. Fortunately, it was quickly proved that he was the victim of a slander. However, the athlete fell into depression and flew home. Ferguson had to personally fly for him, calm him down and return him to England.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s best goals for Manchester United

In October, he scored the only goal against Middlesbrough in a 4-1 loss to Manchester United. But it was this ball that turned out to be an anniversary and made Manchester United the first club to score 1,000 goals in the Premier League.

Following the results of the games in the 2004/05 season, the Portuguese was awarded the prize of the best young player from the association of professional football players FIFPro. In the following season, this award was supplemented by a club achievement – the Football League Cup. In 2006, he was named Premier League Player of the Month twice. The following year was marked by the victory of Manchester United in the Premier League, and the number of goals scored by Ronaldo for the Reds reached fifty.

Young Cristiano Ronaldo

But the magician of the ball more than once became the object of dissatisfaction with the fans. The British were especially outraged by his goal during the penalty shoot-out, when England and Portugal met in the quarter-finals of the 2006 World Cup. The audience booed his bullying of the enemy in the form of deceptive maneuvers, and sometimes indecent gestures, and moments with his falls, which looked like a simulation. However, at the end of the 2006/07 season, he received a lot of awards, including the PFA Footballer of the Year award.

In 2007, the British media reported that Real Madrid were going to poach the 23-year-old star on a £300,000-a-week salary and were willing to pay the club £54m (€80m) for the move. In order not to lose a talented player, management signed a new contract with him, increasing his weekly wage to 120,000 pounds. This circumstance made the 22-year-old Cristiano the only so highly regarded player in the history of the club.

In the same year, Cristiano made a gross violation of the rules in the game against Portsmouth, was sent off and forced to miss the next three matches. He finished second in the fight for the Golden Ball (Kaka deserved the first) and third for the title of the best player according to FIFA (he was ahead of Kaka and Lionel Messi).

In 2008, Ronaldo had his first hit-trick for the club against Newcastle FC and made his first captaincy in a 2-0 win against Bolton Wanderers. He scored both goals, with the second being his 33rd of the season and the most goals scored by a winger.

High performance secured Ronaldo the title of the Premier League’s top scorer of the season and the first ever midfielder to receive the Golden Boot. In total for the season he was the author of 42 goals. He lacked four goals to repeat the record of teammate Denis Low, who scored at 1963/64 years 46 times.

Cristiano Ronaldo on transfer to Manchester United
