Barcelona bring youth back to the starting lineup

After Barcelona’s match against Betis, Lionel Messi posted on Instagram a tribute to Carles Pérez and Anse Fati, the heroes of the match and graduates of the club’s academy.

“Very happy to see these boys fulfill their dreams by making their debut for the first team and scoring goals at the Camp Nou in their first official matches.”

Leo, in principle, does not publish pictures in social networks so often, and even more so to praise someone. And to dedicate a separate post to the debutants of Barca – this has never happened before. Messi himself is a pupil of the club and understands the guys coming from there very well. But for some reason, he dedicated a post to these two guys.

Carles Pérez yesterday started for the senior Barcelona for the first time and scored the first goal for them. Before that, he only came on as a substitute and mainly played for Barcelona B, where he showed himself well last season (13 assists).

At the beginning of this summer, several European clubs claimed Perez, but Valverde took him along with the team for the pre-season. There, Perez played a lot, scored and proved to the coach.

When Carles was asked what he thought about his future, he replied: “I’m going to stay. It all comes down to work and patience, and I’m not going to change everything at the first opportunity. I’ve been a Barça fan since I was a child, I want to be in the first team and be part of it.”

At the very end of the game, he was replaced by 16-year-old Ansu Fati , who became the second youngest Barcelona debutant in La Liga. And he showed himself famously: he boldly went into dribbling, combined with partners and even almost scored.

Valverde liked Fati’s entry: “Ansu has a lot of qualities, he is fast and uses space well. I know he is really young. He is the youngest player who debuted with me. But if we don’t look at the age of the other players on the team, we won’t look at his age either.”

Fun fact: Ansu played on the same pitch yesterday with Betis midfielder Joaquín. The year Ansu was born (2002), Joaquín was already playing in the World Cup.

So why did these guys cause such a fuss?

It’s simple: in recent years, the pupils of Barça have played less and less for the first team. This decline can be traced after the departure of Guardiola and the arrival of Josep Bartomeu as director.

In the last nine years, the team has slowly moved away from years of philosophy and style. This is confirmed by the smaller number of academy graduates at the start, and the rejection of the corporate identity, built on the control of the ball and space.

The club began to spend and earn more, and the significance of the result outweighed the former values. Multimillion-dollar purchases of recent years and the invitation of a coach whose style is the opposite of that of Barcelona, but who knows how to get results, just speak of this.

Simple figures confirming the theses from above. In the 09/10 season, Barça players spent 58% of their time on the pitch. In the 18/19 season – only 39%.

Possession percentage doesn’t fully reflect changes in style as Barcelona still control it a lot in the league due to class dominance. But still: during the seasons with Guardiola, Barça averaged 72% of the possession of the ball. With Valverde – 62%. The difference of 10% at the distance of the season is colossal.

    Barcelona’s latest star alumni

    • Eric Garcia, captain of the Barça under-17s, bought Manchester City two years ago. These two years, Garcia has been playing for the City youth team, and this summer he drove in pre-season with the main team.

    • Carles Aleña is one of the few young players to have played under Valverde. He made 17 La Liga appearances last season, scoring two goals.

An unpleasant situation happened to Alenya in the summer. His number 21 was given to de Jong without telling Aleña himself. “I think this is wrong. I have always behaved respectfully towards the club,” said Aleña and took 19th number.

    • Barcelona B captain Sergi Palencia has been compared to Puyol. Last season, he went on loan to Bordeaux, where he had a good season. And this summer, he left the club as a free agent after 12 years given to Barca.
