Some facts about Plaça de Catalunya

From there you can take the Aerobus (Airbus, express bus) to Barcelona Airport, as well as the N17 and N18 buses. There is also a central tourist information desk.

The Ramblas and Passeig de Gràcia start at Plaça Catalunya. Rambla de Catalunya (another picturesque alley and shopping street, not to be confused with the Ramblas) also starts at the square.

The open space is a cult place of the Catalan capital and the focus of the vibrant life of this city. Plaza Catalunya lies on the border of two districts – the Old Town and Eixample. From the square, travelers go to the Gothic Quarter, to the Casa Batlló created by the genius of Gaudi, to the pedestrian La Rambla and the Passage de Gracia shopping highway.

9036 Highlights 0002 A nine-story department store rises northeast of Plaza Catalunya “El Corte Inglés”, offering residents and visitors to Barcelona an unlimited choice of goods. The large shopping center is known among shoppers for its tall panoramic restaurant, luxurious gourmet shop, and popular cafes. It should be noted that the prices in all the surrounding restaurants cannot be called cheap.

Plaça Catalunya is a favorite place for pigeons, which tourists like to feed. It is decorated with several fountains and sculptures made by famous artists of the 20th century. This place is often used for large celebrations, exhibitions, concerts and other public events. The Catalan Book Week is held here every year. And in winter, one of the largest ice rinks in Europe is poured in open space, the area of \u200b\u200bwhich reaches 1 km².

The history of the construction of Plaza Catalunya

Surprisingly, Plaça Catalunya does not have as long a history as it might seem. Until 1858, it was outside the city walls and was an uninhabited wasteland in front of the city gates, which was surrounded by rural buildings. Then the Barcelona government decided to demolish the old city walls and start building. As a result of the competition, a project for a new square prepared by Idelfons Cerda was selected. On it was built a square-sun with rays diverging in all directions.

The architectural ensemble around the new building was formed by 1888. Minor changes were made to it only in 1929, when Barcelona hosted the International Exhibition. The rectangular space of about 50,000 m² is surrounded by buildings built in the traditions of historicism and neoclassicism. Among them stands out a representative house with an expressive baroque facade, which belongs to the Credit Bank of Spain.

Monuments on Plaza Catalunya in Barcelona

The center of Plaza Catalunya is paved with stone. The most famous monument in the square is dedicated to Francesc Macia, a military figure who proclaimed the independence of the Catalan Republic (1931 year). The monument is unusual and is made of two massive blocks of granite, one of which looks like an inverted staircase. The sculptural composition appeared here in 1991, and the well-known artist in Catalonia, Jose Maria Subirax, became its author.

The sights of tourists are invariably attracted by two sculptures depicting expressive female figures. At one end of Plaza Catalunya, in the middle of a small pond, there is a “Goddess” – a marble copy of the work of Josep Clara (1910), and in another place rises the Youth monument created by the same sculptor.

The monument “Shepherd with a Flute” looks great in the open space, and two equestrian groups look very impressive. Rearing stallions, which are tamed by a man and a woman, symbolize “Labor” and “Wisdom”. Catalonia consists of four provinces, and each of them is represented by a separate sculptural group on the main square of Barcelona.
