Barcelona top restaurant: The 35 Best Restaurants in Barcelona, According to a Local Expert

The 13 Hottest Restaurants In Barcelona For 2023

Barcelona has long been one of the world’s top dining destinations. This year, there are more reasons than ever to eat out in the Catalan capital.

Mont Bar, one of the hottest restaurants in Barcelona right now.

In 2023, Barcelona’s most-loved restaurants are taking things up another notch, from those racking up new accolades to a slew of exciting newcomers. These are the hottest tickets in town right now—from the recently opened to the newly Michelin starred, and the ones locals simply can’t get enough of.

Maresme peas, Iberian bacon, sagù at Hermanos Torres.

A success story like that of Hermanos Torres only comes along once in a while. Twins Sergio and Javier made their name at one-star Dos Cielos, but were destined for even greater things. Within two years of opening here, the hard-working hermanos had been awarded two stars and, now, in their fifth year, they made it three. If you can score a reservation—and that’s a big if these days–you’ll discover an experience that plays with the contrasts: a polished three-star Michelin restaurant in a converted warehouse in a lackluster residential neighborhood, haute cuisine made with a 3D printer, and local “grandma” dishes, like Maresme peas or onions from Fuentes, flawlessly balanced with ingredients like black caviar, sea urchin and truffle.

Tostada of Wagyu tartare at COME.

For years, dining in the Sant Antoni district was synonymous with the Adrià brothers and their El Barri group that included Tickets, Hoja Santa and Pakta. When the group fell foul of the pandemic, it left a vacuum that has quickly been filled by a string of high-profile new openings. Pakta’s old space has been taken over by Alapar, a delightful Mediterrean-Japanese gastrobar, while Mexican chef Paco Méndez is back in what was Hoja Santa with a new concept called COME. Serving dishes like a tostada of Wagyu tartare and ‘Grandma Flor’s’ rib taco, he was awarded a well-deserved Michelin star within a year of opening.

Maitake mushroom, cashew nut cream, tabuleh gel at Albé.

Photo: David Egui

Albé means my heart in Lebanese and, no wonder, since everyone who comes here falls instantly in love. The word “fusion” get a bad rap but here’s the proof that it’s worth celebrating—when done right. So, steer your course for Albé, where Lebanese restaurateur Joey Attieh combines the flavors of his native land with seasonal delicacies from his adopted home in Catalonia. The result is a blend of everything from smoked labneh with zaatar and eggplant, to a tartare of red shrimp from nearby Blanes served on baklava. The well-balanced, affordable tasting menu is a great way to try all the classics—and some seasonal specials too.

Crunchy nori sea weed taco, tuna sashimi, tobiko roe, and Macha mayonnaise at Slow & Low.

Photo: Diego Arenas

Aptly named Slow & Low started out slowly and without making much noise. Opened in 2018, it was the kind of place chefs went on their days off, that local foodies spoke about in whispers, not wanting anyone to know. Then, last fall, the people from Michelin awarded it a star and now everyone is talking about the understated brilliance of Catalan chef Francesc Beltri and his Mexican colleague Nicolás de la Vega. The tasting menus range from six courses at lunchtime to 15 or 17 courses at night, and include wonders like the bao with miso sauce, cured tuna belly and finger lime, and the Mediterranean green curry with pil pil, bergamot, stingray and mushroom.

Mont Bar.

Another Barcelona favorite that recently notched up its first Michelin star, Mont Bar is the fine-dining restaurant for people who are bored of fine dining. There are no hushed voices, white tablecloths or obsequious waiters. Instead, this elevated take on a boisterous tapas joint invites guests to perch on bar stools by the marble-topped counter, while listening to a playlist of catchy hits from the 1970s and 80s. The “elevation” comes into play when you sample the produce: the tuna tartare is made from the finest tuna belly and served with a pine-nut emulsion, and the suckling pig melts in your mouth after having been slow cooked for more than 12 hours.

“Cap i pota” of scallop at Quirat.

Barcelona’s InterContinental Hotel isn’t just one of the hottest new places in town to stay, it’s also causing waves with its recently opened restaurant. Quirat, which is Catalan for carat (as in the unit used to measure the purity of gold or precious stones), is overseen by Victor Torres, Spain’s youngest chef to be awarded a Michelin star. It offers two aptly named seasonal tasting menus, 18K and 24K. With dishes ranging from the delicate tartlet of shrimp tartare with caviar, through more complex flavors like the cap i pota—an offal stew typically found in old man bars, but made here with scallops instead of pig’s trotters—the result is nothing if not resplendent.

Rice with seafood at Casa Maians.

Barceloneta may be known for its crowded beach and grim tourist traps but, venture into the narrow streets of old Barceloneta village, and you will find yourself in the one of the city’s most historic districts. It makes a fitting home for Casa Maians, a cozy neighborhood haunt dedicated to reclaiming classic dishes like black squid-ink rice with artichoke, or a special take on the spicy potato “Bomba” de la Barceloneta. Casa Maians makes it with Iberian ham instead of the traditional ground beef, as an homage to the now-closed Bar el Jabalí, where chef Roger Soteras Domenech started his career aged 18. No wonder locals are obsessed with this place!

Home-made ravioli at Bar Lombo.

From the team behind one of Barcelona’s great pandemic-era success stories, Tamae, comes Bar Lombo. The concept is tried and tested: top-notch classic Italian dishes made from first-rate produce. Think burrata with grilled seasonal fruit, vitello tonnato but made from fillet steak, or pappardelle served with a ragù of osso buco, all made for sharing. What makes Bar Lombo special is that it feels like having dinner in your best friend’s dining room. The space is cozy and warm, the service is friendly without being over the top, and you’ll probably want to come back as soon as you leave.

“Vilma” rice with octopus at Batea.

Image courtesy Batea, All Rights Reserved

Batea is a new venture from the much-loved team who brought us Besta in 2021. They say younger siblings are more laid back and that rings true as far as the vibe goes at this relaxed marisquería, or seafood bar. But don’t be fooled: there is nothing casual about the food. The oysters, clams and cockles are as fresh as they get, while the goo of the omelet topped with baby squid will have you drooling. Bearing in mind that elder sister Besta is already featured in the Michelin Guide, we have reason to suspect Batea might also have a bright future.

Casa de Comidas Buenavista.

Image courtesy Hotel Antiga Casa Buenavista

Set in the new Antiga Casa Buenavista hotel, Buenavista is the reincarnation of a historic spot by the same name that was a mainstay of Barcelona’s theater district in the 1920s and 1930s. The building, which has been in the same family since 1918, reopened last year as a beautifully designed boutique hotel. Meanwhile, its new restaurant stays true to its origins as a “casa de comidas”, or informal eatery. Don’t miss the traditional Catalan dishes like the omelet with chorizo and aioli or the clams with sherry and Iberian ham—made using seasonal, market-fresh produce.

Anchovy and foie gras nigiri at Brugarol X.

Photo: Jean-Jacques Ruchti

The Gothic Quarter may be Barcelona’s most historically fascinating neighborhood but can be a bit of a dud if you are looking for great places to eat. Fortunately, now, there’s Brugarol. Hidden down one of the narrowest alleyways in what was once the Jewish district, or “El Call”, it serves a selection of tapas made from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients with an Asian twist. It also offers a very reasonably priced nine-course tasting menu. For even more Brugarol magic, check out the second location, Brugarol X, in the more upscale Eixample neighborhood, where the menu is equally thoughtful, sustainable and delicious, but more elaborate and, if possible, even more impressive.

Doppietta.

Ultra-popular Benzina has a new baby sister. She lives next door and specializes in sharing plates and platters overflowing with artisanal cold cuts and cheeses. The name Doppietta is inspired by the legendary car race la Mille Miglia that took place in Brescia, which is also Chef Nicola Valle’s home region. While he sources ingredients from across Italy, there is a preference for artisanal produce from this idyllic slice of the country between the Alps and Lake Garda. Don’t miss Barcelona’s hottest new Italian brunch of pasta, cheese, charcuteries, tiramisu and spritz—served here on weekend afternoons!

Natural wine at Bandini’s.

Photo: Pablo Viscubi

New kid on the block Bandini’s is the latest addition to Barcelona’s buzzy foodie neighborhood of Sant Antoni. It is the brainchild of Carmen from Andalusia and Povel, originally from Sweden, who met while working together at trendy Bar Brutal before finally setting up their own venture. The result feels very right now: sharing plates with Scandi touches, made from local, seasonal produce, plenty of natural wine, and a homey space with warm, personal service. What more could we possibly ask for in 2023?

The Best Restaurants In Barcelona 2023 A Food Lover’s Dream

Choosing the best restaurants in Barcelona is not an easy task in a city where world-class cuisine tops other widely known attractions like Gaudi’s famous architecture, sandy Mediterranean beaches, art museums, vibrant cultural heritage, and of course, its outstanding football team.

Whether you are looking for Michelin star fame, unpretentious tapas bars, or local Catalan cuisine, we’ve got you covered.

The TV-famous Torres twins have stated a few times that their Michelin three-star restaurant is a ‘kitchen with a restaurant. ’ And they mean it: you are literally seated in a kitchen with seats around it.

The main show is the preparation of dishes in public. And the main star of the show is their tasting menu, for which only seasonal and local products are used. Our opinion: One of the best Michelin Star Restaurants Barcelona.

Come, by Paco Méndez

Come, by Paco Méndez

Paco Méndez is a Michelin star awarded Mexican chef (the first obtained by a Mexican cuisine restaurant in Barcelona and the second in Spain and Europe), whose new restaurant boasts Mexican haute cuisine without the almost-obligatory tasting menus. It even adds a bit of informality, such as tasty tacos.

Intense flavours in the mouth, top-quality, carefully sourced products with very bright colours, creativity when choosing dishes and pure art when plating.
