Barcelona Egyptian Museum – barcelona-excursii

November 28, 2020
The Egyptian Museum of Barcelona (Museo Egipcio de Barcelona) is a cultural and educational institution whose purpose is to acquaint visitors with life, society and
customs of one of the oldest civilizations in history – the civilization of ancient Egypt.
The birth and history of the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona is entirely connected with the figure of Jordi Clom (Barcelona, 1950) – President of the Derby Hotels Collection hotel chain.
Jordi Clos managed to combine his passion for Ancient Egypt with business activities in the hotel business, the proof of which was the fact that in 1992 he decided to introduce
to the public his collection of 70 pieces of Egyptian archeology at his five-star Claris Hotel in Barcelona.
It was there that the first permanent exhibition of Egyptian art settled in the Catalan capital.
Seeing the warm welcome and the great interest of the public in the culture of the pharaohs, Jordi Clos created his own Archaeological Fund in the same year, and two years later, on March 23, 1994, the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona
opened its doors to the public, becoming the first monographic museum dedicated to the culture of Ancient Egypt.
At that time, 300 works were presented to the public, relating mainly to the themes of the funerary world and religious beliefs.
However, gradually the museum building became more and more crowded. The hotel business flourished, and in accordance with this, the collection was replenished with new exhibits. For this reason, in 2000, the museum settled in
new premises at 284 Valencia Street, where it is located to this day.
Currently, the museum’s collection contains more than 1,000 exhibits, giving visitors a broad and complete picture of the culture of the civilization of the pharaohs: from the entertaining aspects of mummification to
no less interesting nuances of the erotic culture of ancient Egypt.
Ancient Egyptian statues, jewelry, stone and ceramic products, cosmetics, a large number of exhibits related to burial rites – for a person who is passionate about history and culture
Ancient Egypt, or vice versa, for someone who has a very poor idea of the pharaohs, the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona will be equally interesting.
