The city’s seafront was ignored until 1992, when it underwent a massive transformation for the Olympics. Despite the initial resistance, it was wildly successful: the city now has seven kilometres of golden sands, running from the bustling Port Vell to the upscale Port Olímpic and beyond to the Fòrum. Inevitably, this is also where you’ll find some of the city’s best seafood restaurants.

Nostalgic for summer? The smell of suntan lotion, the sight of women in only half a bikini and men wearing the same, the taste of sangria… Never fear: at Zahara Cocktail Club you can savor the tail end of the warmest season as if it were a pleasant midsummer dream. And this, during those rough days of post-holiday depression, is a gift from the gods. Among the bars that pepper Passeig de Joan de Borbó, this is without a doubt the one with the most modern look and the best cocktails. But don’t mistake it for quintessence of sophistication – you are in a tourist war zone tourist, after all. But still, Zahara does have all the bar mod cons: leather sofas, coffee tables, black and red motif, and a night bar where cocktails come at quite a reasonable price when you consider the location. But the jewel is the terrace at the front, keeping things cool. The serving staff is slower and more forgetful than a turtle with dementia, but if you get a seat outside (inside is not an option in warm weather, where it’s hot as hades and the music is cranked up to an indecent volume), you can entertain yourself with the parade of scalded tourists returning to their hostel after overdoing it on the beach.

Bar patron Señora Leo doesn’t mess around, which is why she took this old portside joint that served up fried fare and mini bottles of beer and transformed it into a shrine to the great Sevillian dancer and singer, Miguel Vargas Jiménez (a. k.a. ‘Bambino’). The bar itself is incredible, its walls lined with clippings and photos of Bambino. The clientele ranges from the grey-whiskered granddad sucking on a toothpick to the crusty post-teen local skiving off to smoke some herbs. The soundtrack? All flamenco, all the time, at an ear-shattering volume: 100% Barceloneta.

Where to eat in Barcelona Solo Travel Blog
During the writing of the report on During my trip to Barcelona, I found some interesting restaurants that I would like to go to in Barcelona and I want to share this with the readers. I will talk about restaurants of historical note, about the typical Spanish restaurant La Paradeta, which does not speak English, and about the methods of cheating tourists on La Rambla.
Barcelona is a seaside city and that’s why you need to eat seafood there, it’s the freshest. Of course, you should try the Spanish gazpacho soup, paella, tapas, sangria and jamon.
Despite the fact that paella is a Valencian and not a Catalan dish, it is served in every cafe or restaurant in Barcelona and there are a great many variations of this dish. The most exotic, in my opinion, is paella tinted with cuttlefish ink, it looks really black.

Gazpacho is also not a Catalan dish, but an Andalusian one, it is a soup of tomato puree with other vegetables and spices. This soup is served cold, in supermarkets they sell this soup in bags, the same as juice.
Tapas was invented by the Spanish king Alfonso X of Castile (1252-1284). Since his warriors liked to drink, the king ordered that a snack be served free of charge with each cup. True, now tapas is not served for free, there are even special tapas bars, they specialize only in tapas-type snacks and drinks.
Sangria is essentially an alcoholic cocktail made from inexpensive red wine, a small amount of fruit and ice. It tastes sweet, i.e. this is not a dry wine.
Sangria in a restaurant
Only crème catalana or Catalan crème belongs to purely Catalan cuisine – a dessert made from milk and egg yolks with sugar, it tastes like our crème brulee ice cream.
The easiest way to try different varieties of ham is to visit the Boquería market.

About food on La Rambra
We were twice in Barcelona and dined on La Rambla twice, we personally made sure that you shouldn’t do that. In general, you should not eat on the main street of any city, even your own. On the main street, everything is tailored for tourists, it is expensive and not very tasty, alas, since these restaurants and cafes work for a one-time visitor. They came once, ate once and will not come again, there are so many people on La Rambla that local restaurateurs can afford such behavior.
Moreover, in such a crowded place you will be scammed the fastest, the second time we just fell for such a typical tourist scam. The meaning of which boils down to the following: a tempting special offer like paella and tapas 15€ is written in large letters, and then it turns out that a liter of sangria in this restaurant costs twice as much as usual. Or you come together and each of you is served a liter mug of sangria worth 10€ each.
Fish restaurants in Barceloneta
The best seafood restaurants are located in the area called Barceloneta, very close to the beach of the same name and the metro station of the same name. There is just a sea of restaurants, all the first floors are occupied by restaurants, most of them have an English menu with pictures, but I am always interested in historical establishments.
One of these establishments is the CAN SOLÉ restaurant. This is a restaurant with more than 100 years of history, one of the few that survived the reconstruction before the 1992 Olympics. He specializes in seafood and paella. Many Spanish celebrities have been there, of which I know only Joan Miro. Reviews about this restaurant are mixed, some visitors think it’s too expensive, while others think it’s worth it.

CAN SOLÉ restaurant menu with prices. We ourselves did not visit CAN SOLÉ, a couple of times we just went to the first restaurant we came across in the Barceloneta area, the menu of all of them is almost the same, the only difference is in the interior.
We celebrated our first arrival in Barcelona at a fish restaurant (I don’t remember the name) not far from the beach in the Barceloneta area. They brought us just a giant plate of shrimp, squid rings in batter, four pieces of fish, on the menu this dish was listed as a dish for two, this can definitely feed four.

Second time in another restaurant we ate this.

Café Four Cats (Els 4Gats)
This bohemian establishment is famous primarily for the fact that Picasso, Gaudí and many other celebrities have been there. This restaurant also hosted the first exhibitions of the then unknown Picasso. The Four Cats Cafe opened its doors on June 12, 1897. And since 1903 it has become the center of modernism in Barcelona.
The cafe is located in the Gothic Quarter. The address and menu with prices can be viewed on the official website of the Four Cats cafe. It is not necessary to dine there, you can have a cup of coffee and look at the interior and feel the bohemian atmosphere.

Granja Dulcinea
This is a cafe specializing in churros. These are dough products fried in boiling oil. On the one hand, it is certainly harmful, but sometimes you can afford it. Churros are usually eaten dipped in hot chocolate. The website for this cafe is not working, it is located very close to the church of Santa Maria del Pi at Carrer de Petritxol 2, 08002 Barcelona.

Restaurant in the Calvet house
This restaurant is best known for being located in a house designed by Gaudí himself. The restaurant in this house opened at 1994 and he specializes in the author’s cuisine of local chef Miguel Alia, who is inspired by the local Mediterranean cuisine with some elements of oriental culinary traditions.
Calvet House
In the Calvet House restaurant you can taste such exotics as fresh duck liver with orange sauce, rice with lobster, vegetables with goat cheese and rosemary or partridge with chestnuts.

You can see the menu and prices on the official website of the restaurant, please note the restaurant works in the Spanish style: lunch from 13:00 to 15:30, dinner from 20:30 to 23:00.
Address: Carrer de Casp, 48, 08008 Barcelona
Metro station: Urquinaona on lines L1/L4, within walking distance from Plaça Catalunya.
La Paradeta
This restaurant is not historical at all. Nikolai was taken to work by his colleagues. It may not even be a restaurant, but a cafe or a canteen, i.e. there is no glamor at all. It is interesting for its service system. You are greeted by a counter with raw seafood and all kinds of fish, you place an order and they immediately start cooking it.
This is how the counter looks like in La Paradeta
There is only one slippery moment, you have to learn the numerals in Spanish or come with Spanish-speaking friends. When the order is ready, the administrator shouts out the order number in Spanish, they do not speak English. But everything is budget, tasty and very interesting.
Shells in La ParadetaOysters, in La Paradeta
La Paradeta is a chain restaurant, there are five of them in Barcelona and one more in Sitges. The most popular restaurant is located at the Sagrada Familia, in the high season there may be queues, so it is better to choose a restaurant in a less popular place in Barcelona to avoid the hustle and bustle. See the official website of the La Paradeta network for the opening hours, addresses and opening hours. Pay attention to the opening hours of restaurants, the Spaniards do not like to work.
How to eat on a budget in Barcelona
Right on Plaza Catalunya there is a huge El Corte Inglés department store, there is a large grocery supermarket on the ground floor, where you can buy ready-made salads, bread, jamon and sliced cheese and even a bottle of sangria and eat it all sitting on a bench in Plaza Catalunya.
