French literature occupies a central place in the development of European culture. French writers have made a huge contribution to the development of world fiction.

The works of great French writers are presented at the exhibition in French, English, German, Polish.

Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) French writer and journalist. Traveled in Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Germany. Dumas was best known for his historical adventure novels The Three Musketeers, The Countess de Monsoro, and The Count of Monte Cristo. When writing his works, Dumas resorted to assistants, one of whom was O. Macke. Dumas’ works combine a reliable recreation of everyday life, a dynamic plot and intrigue. When writing the plot, Dumas studied the chronicles, historical facts. His works have been translated into about a hundred languages, his novels are often published and filmed all over the world.

The Three Musketeers (original French Les trios mousquetaires) is a famous historical adventure novel published in 1844. A novel about love, friendship, devotion and betrayal. This is a story about brave musketeers and the dangerous adventures of a fearless Gascon nobleman. The novel is the most famous work of the French writer. The immortal work was loved by readers all over the world. Based on the novel The Three Musketeers, more than a hundred films were made in different countries.

Alexandre Dumas-son (Alexandre Dumas-fils) (1824-1895) – French writer.
From his youth, he began to write poetry, then novels and short stories appeared. His moralizing novels were a success, they had both life authenticity, and intrigue, and sentimentality. In his works, the writer touched upon the pressing problems of family relations. The most popular novel was The Lady of the Camellias. In 1892, A. Dumas was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor.

The Lady of the Camellias (La Dame aux camellias) is a novel about the tragic love between a Parisian courtesan and a young aristocrat.
The main character Marguerite Gauthier, who fell in love with a young man in order not to break his life, refuses her love. The novel is filled with passion and a tragic ending. The novel immediately became popular, later Dumas reworked it into a play. The novel formed the basis of G. Verdi’s opera La Traviata, and it was also repeatedly filmed in different countries.

Albert Camus (1913-1960) – French writer of Algerian origin,
worked in journalism. Camus traveled a lot, actively participated in the theatrical life of France and Algeria. He expressed his worldview in the form of novels, short stories and essays. At 19In 1957, the writer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for his enormous contribution to literature, highlighting the importance of human conscience.” The works of Camus have been translated into Russian since 1966.

The Fall (La Chute) is a short story published in 1956. It deals with the themes of guilt and freedom. The story of a lawyer who experienced a moment of insight, who decided on an act that changed his whole life. The author interprets the image of original sin in his own way.

Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) is an outstanding French writer, without whom it is impossible to imagine European literature of the 19th century. The novel “Pyshka” brought wide fame to the writer, after which the theme of love and war became central in the writer’s work. In his work, piercing drama and deep psychological analysis can be traced. The work of Maupassant was highly appreciated by L.N. Tolstoy, A.P. Chekhov and others. Many of his works have been filmed.

“Pyshka” is a story published in 1880. The action takes place during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. A poorly educated and slightly vulgar lady nicknamed “Dumpy” looks much more noble against the background of the bourgeois.

“Dear Friend” – a novel, first published in 1885, is dedicated to the career growth of a young man who has forgotten all decorum and moral standards. High society Lovelace had a unique ability to seduce. History becomes a symbolic reflection of society.

Mont-Auriol, a novel published in 1887, describes the sad love story of Christiane Andermatt and Paul Brétigny. The scene of the novel is a fashionable resort, where the love relationships of the characters are intertwined with business and the desire to get rich. The novel is still the most widely read.

Jules Verne (1828-1905) – French writer, founder of modern science fiction. He showed interest in geography, traveled around England, USA, Italy, North Africa.
The novel “Children of Captain Grant” brought him success. J. Verne’s books have been translated into more than 170 languages. His novels have been filmed many times. The very first film adaptation – “Journey to the Moon” dir. J. Méliès, 1902 The writer was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor.

Emile Zola (1840-1902) – French writer, engaged in literary and art criticism. In 1888 he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor. The writer’s work was influenced by the painting of E. Manet and the early impressionists, the work of O. de Balzac and G. Flaubert. In Russia, the writer’s works have been translated since the 1870s. The novels have been filmed many times.
