How to get to Montserrat from Barcelona

How to get to Montserrat from Barcelona on your own? In general, it is quite easy. The most common way is by train. This is a fairly inexpensive and at the same time fast option. And if you still decide to get to the Montserrat monastery on your own, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the detailed step-by-step instructions. But before that, be sure to watch the video, after which your desire to get to Montserrat will be even stronger.

How to get to Montserrat Monastery from Barcelona by rack railway – cremaliera

1We go to the train station Plaza España

First you need to get to Barcelona-Plaça Espanya station. The easiest way is to get there by subway. The station is in the same building as it. We recommend arriving at the Plaça Espanya station early, as we first have to find the right platform. This station is quite large.

2Looking for the train we need

From the Barcelona-Plaça Espanya station there are trains of the local company FGC. They have several routes, but at the moment we specifically need the line R5, Barcelona-Manresa. Commuter trains on this line travel towards Montserrat from Barcelona at least once an hour, and even more often in the middle of the day.

The station we need is called Monistrol de Montserrat (on the electronic boards in the train cars it is displayed as Monistrol de M) and is located 1 hour 10 minutes from Barcelona. At the same time, you should be careful and confuse it with the Olesa de Montserrat station, which will be two stations before it!

3Cremallera de Montserrat

To get to the monastery from the station Monistrol de Montserrat, you need to change to the cog railway – cremallera (Cremallera de Montserrat), which will take us to the foot of Montserrat and directly to the monastery itself. Along the way, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the mountains of Montserrat from the heart.

  1. The entire route will be approximately 5 kilometers, during which you will overcome a vertical drop of over 600 meters.
  2. Kremalera trains usually run once an hour (and from the intermediate station Monistrol Vila – every 20 minutes). Their schedule corresponds to the arrival of the train from Barcelona. But you should be careful, as it may vary depending on the season.
  3. Travel time to the monastery will be about 20 minutes.
  4. Monistrol Vila does not need to get off during an intermediate stop.
  5. The final stop we need is called Montserrat.
  6. The cremalier trailer will take you directly to the Montserrat monastery itself.

Important information! On the way back to Barcelona, when descending the rack, be careful not to mistakenly get off at the Monistrol Vila intermediate station.

On the way back, you need to get to the Monistrol de Montserrat station. However, do not forget to check the timetable, as some trains can only go to Monistrol Vila station. Trains to your desired station Monistrol de Montserrat run once an hour.

Now you know how to get to Montserrat from Barcelona and back.

Funiculars on Montserrat

Funiculars should not be confused with rack railways and cable cars. They operate right on the territory of the Montserrat monastery. With their help, it will not be difficult to get to various areas of the mountain of the same name and even the Holy Cave.

Montserrat Cable Car

Funicular also allows you to enjoy the magnificence of local landscapes and learn new routes (for example, you can use the funicular one way and walk the other way, thereby relaxing a little and getting a lot of new impressions). There are seats in the funicular trailers.

Montserrat has two funiculars:

  • Funicular de Sant Joan
  • Funicular de Santa Cova

The best tours of Montserrat

The Santa Cova funicular will help you get to the Holy Cave, but you still have to walk part of the way.

According to legend, a miraculous statue of the Black Virgin of Montserrat was found in the Holy Cave of Montserrat. Today, this place is decorated with a delightful chapel with the image of the Black Virgin of Montserrat.

The best way to get acquainted with this route is to go down to the Holy Cave on foot, looking at the religious sculptures of the Way of Prayers – Rosari Monumental along the way, and on the way back take the funicular.

  1. A one-way trip will only take us two and a half minutes.
  2. The top station of the Santa Cova funicular is located just a few steps from the Montserrat monastery itself.
  3. The Holy Cave is located 1.5 km from Montserrat Monastery. But do not forget that the road may seem slightly tiring and take about 30-40 minutes. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes.

5Sant Joan funicular to get to Montserrat

How to get to Montserrat by the Sant Joan funicular

The Sant Joan funicular connects Montserrat with the hermitage of Saint John (Sant Joan). This skete is located at an altitude of 1000 meters. It is one of the highest points of Montserrat. There is also an observation deck with one of the best views of Mount Montserrat and its surroundings.

The Sant Joan Funicular moves almost along a sheer cliff and its route has the steepest slope of all Spanish funiculars.

  1. The lower station of the Sant Joan funicular is located almost in the center of Montserrat, next to the rack railway station.
  2. One way trip on this funicular will take us 6 minutes.
  3. The Sant Joan Funicular offers more than just great views. It takes you to the starting point of a series of hiking trails in the Montserrat Natural Park.
  4. Also at the upper station of the Sant Joan funicular, the road begins, which will lead us to the highest point of Montserrat – the top of Sant Jeroni (1236 m). From there you have the best views of the mountains and the surrounding area.

Now you know how to get to Montserrat from Barcelona. Be sure to include this stunning attraction on your itinerary. Then you will return home with a lot of impressions.

Trails in the Montserrat National Park

The natural complex adjacent to the monastery has been a national park since 1987. Pick up a map from the Montserrat Information Centre, with a description of the 5 routes from the monastery.

Where to go depends on your physical fitness and desire. We chose the 1st and 2nd route. Walking in the park, do not forget about the time. You can go down the cable car or cogwheel until 19:00.

Chapel of Sant Joan

  1. From the monastery to the cave Santa Cova Santa Cova funicular runs. The road from the lower station “Way of Prayers” is decorated with sculptural compositions on religious themes. In the chapel there is a copy of the Montserrat Madonna, in front of the entrance there is a fountain with drinking water.
  2. To the Sant Joan chapel and the upper caves, the Sant Joan funicular goes, I recommend using it to go up and down on foot even if your combined ticket includes funiculars.
  3. Summit Sant Jeroni (1236 m) is the highest point of Montserrat. From the observation deck of Sant Jeroni you can see Mallorca and the Pyrenees. Difficult route with steep climbs.
  4. The chapel and the cross of St. Michael can be visited separately (short walk from the monastery) or descending from Sant Joan.
