HONORING THE ATHLETES THAT CONTROL THE REINS
Unveiled in May 2005, “Gallop to Glory” honors the jockeys who have won the Kentucky Derby™. Similar to Hollywood’s “Walk of Fame,” all living Kentucky Derby™-winning jockeys have been invited to preserve their handprints and signatures at Galt House® Hotel, the official Host Hotel for the Kentucky Derby™.
Each year, the handprints of the newest Derby-winning rider are added alongside unique roses made of steel created by Craig Kaviar. “Gallop to Glory” is located at the main entrance of the SUITE Tower.

Cons
The 43-room Derby Eiffel Hotel is a mid-range property offering affordable prices in a turn-of-the-century building with Eiffel Tower views. The furnishings are a mix of modern and old-world styles and there are a number of nice amenities including a quaint courtyard, classic mahogany bar and lounge, a charming breakfast room with stone walls, and a computer corner. Rooms have artwork inspired by Paris landmarks, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and in some, whirlpool tubs, and views of the courtyard or Eiffel Tower — but can be tiny. There is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi. It may also be worth considering the similarly priced Hotel Duquesne Eiffel nearby, which offers free Wi-Fi and arguably better rooms.

Small, value hotel with a quaint courtyard and Eiffel Tower views
The Derby Eiffel Hotel is located in a turn-of-the-century building that provides an affordable base with iconic views of the Parisian landmark. The mid-range hotel’s entrance, directly on the sidewalk, has red awnings over room windows, patio furniture in front of arched windows on the ground-floor, and a red “Derby Eiffel” sign over the entrance. The lobby is decorated in wood wall paneling that creates a traditional, old-world vibe. Modern chairs and a table are across from the wooden front desk. A charming antique staircase, with purple carpeting and iron railings, winds from the sixth floor to the hotel’s patio, where there are potted plants and patio furniture. Hallways are standard, with cream-colored walls, purple striped carpeting, and an old-fashioned, small elevator. Overall the atmosphere is old-world and cozy.

Simple, clean rooms with Parisian decor, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and Eiffel Tower views
Options for rooms include Single, Twin, Double, Double Premium, Triple, and Junior Suites that are furnished with wooden floors, yellow or blue wallpaper, Eiffel Tower decor, and dark wood furniture. All rooms come with air-conditioning, closets or wardrobes, safes, Wi-Fi (for a fee), and windows, with intricate iron railings, overlooking the courtyard or the Eiffel Tower. Space is limited in rooms — some are teensy even by Paris standards — but there are writing desks with built-in minibars and, in some rooms, chairs. Small, modern bathrooms have hairdryers, shower/tub combos and — in some — whirlpool tubs and heated towel racks. Microwaves and irons/ironing boards are available on request.

Nestled in the beautiful hills of Derbyshire close to the Peak District National Park, Derby is one of the busiest urban centers in England. Derby is truly impressive for its historic transformation from a market town to an industrial center during the Industrial Revolution. Everything from textiles to airplanes was produced here, but since the industrial plants here have closed, Derby is now a bustling venue for festivals spanning live music, theater and food. If you are looking for a hotel in Derby, choose the Leonardo Hotel Derby, which is located in the quarter where the most beautiful cathedral is located.
Get your bearings
A visit to Derby would not be complete without a visit to Marquiton Park, a beautiful green area that is one of the most popular weekend getaways in the East Midlands. The park has been modernized several times and is best known as a Grade II listed greenhouse and artisan village, where silversmiths sell handcrafted jewels and skilled artisans make bespoke garden furniture. Nearby there is a cafe specializing in cakes made with local ingredients.
Don’t miss it
Derby has a vibrant arts scene, with everything from comedy nights to live theater performances throughout the city. The Derby Theater deserves special attention, whose performances are written and performed by promising actors and playwrights. Another notable venue is The Venue, a pub where up-and-coming artists perform (previously hosted by the British rock band Wolf Alice and the British band Fat White Family). If you’re feeling hungry after a musical performance, Derby has a variety of dining options ranging from European cuisine at Wonky Table to healthy, delicious and well-prepared food at Blacksmiths Loft. You will also find many cafes and street food shops.
While visiting
Head to the Derby Museum & Art Gallery for an admiring look at the city’s rich manufacturing history. The Pottery Room displays a range of fine porcelain made in Derbyshire dating back to the 17th century. In several rooms you can look at the world’s largest collection of paintings by Joseph Wright, who was originally from Derby.
