2021 sports calendar
Author: Ivan Belentsov
Mankind exhaled joyfully after 2020 ended. For a long time, people have not had so many hopes for the new year as in January 2021. The global coronavirus pandemic and the economic crisis that followed it have completely changed the world. I would like to believe that only for a while. The coronavirus crisis also affected sports: championships were postponed, major competitions were canceled, clubs and stars lost a lot of money. The losses did not affect only the elite: Roger Federer, who continues to recover from the operation, only increased his fortune, and he did not fall out of the top twenty of the rating. Bayern Munich lost only about 3% of the profit, having won all the tournaments in which they took part. But the vast majority of athletes reported that 2020 was one of the toughest years of their careers for them.
It is important to believe that 2021 will be without pauses in the championships and cancellations of tournaments. There is a huge number of sporting events ahead – both in Russia and in the world. We have prepared a detailed calendar of sports events that will help you not to miss a single competition or major tournament, whose participants are hungry for victories and eager to fight. A unique situation has arisen, since the European and World Football Championships are to be held in less than 24 months. The main sporting events of 2021 will give a lot of emotions. Let the vast majority of them be pleasant.
January
Plan of sports events in January 2021. In January, the World Youth Ice Hockey Championship was held, for which the Russians had hopes. Unfortunately, they did not materialize – the team of Igor Larionov was left without a pedestal. In January, several important football finals will take place at once. Let’s single out the world championship in handball among men. Russia did not make it there, but you can cheer for Belarus.
February
The second month of the year will traditionally delight with an abundance of winter sports, but do not forget about tennis. The ATP Cup will take place in the early days, and the Australian Open will soon follow.
Tennis tournament in Australia starts on February 8
March
The third month of the year in the sports calendar is filled with spectator sports. Fans will be able to take a breath before the most important tournaments and enjoy the intrigue in short track or parkour. And don’t forget about the roar of Formula 1 cars. For the first time since 1985, the pilots will return to the track in the Netherlands, and the race in Saudi Arabia will be held at night.
April
The European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships will be held in Bulgaria on
In April, the MLB season kicks off in baseball, the Boston Marathon will be held in the USA, the World Snooker Championship will be held in the UK, and the U18 Hockey Championship will be held in the USA. Canada will host the Men’s World Curling Championship and the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championship. The NFL Draft starts April 29th. What else is waiting for us?
May
Can Bayern reach the Champions League final again?
In May, the NBA playoffs are traditionally played, and football sums up the season with final matches in major club tournaments. In addition to sports disciplines with the ball, horse racing and cycling competitions begin.
June
Romelu Lukaku helped Belgium qualify for Euro 2020
The long-awaited European Football Championship, postponed from last year due to Covid-19, is due to take place in the first month of summer. The participants have already managed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, so they will have to play two forums in two years. The load will be serious! However, this will not be the only major football tournament. We also pay attention to the NHL and NBA drafts. And of course, an abundance of tennis.
July
The whole world is waiting for the Olympic Games in Japan
Mid-summer could be called the month of lacrosse – the world championship for women and the European championship for men will be held. The MLB All-Star Game will take place on July 13. But much more important is the start of the Olympics in Japan, another postponed and long-awaited tournament.
August
In August there will be a lot of tennis again. The US Open is preceded by the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Masters. The Czech Republic will host the summer biathlon championship. Let’s not forget about the Universiade and the Paralympic Games.
September
September 9th marks the start of the NFL season. There will be championships in climbing, archery and kayaking and canoeing. The London Marathon will take place on September 3rd, the Chicago Marathon on September 10th, and the Berlin Marathon on September 26th. After a short pause, football will return.
October
Track and field competitions will take place this month, and in addition to them, the Motorsport Games, which will be held October 22-24 in France, will be interesting. The Tokyo Marathon will take place on October 17th.
November
Toward the end of the year, there is a lull in sports. The New York City Marathon will take place on November 7th. There will be world championships in karate and trampolining. Tennis tournaments will be held in Italy, Spain and France. And what else?
December
Women’s Handball World Championship starts on December 2
The calendar of sports events for 2021 will end with one major tournament, which will be the Women’s Handball World Championship. On December 11, the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival will begin in Finland. But that’s not all that the fans have to go through. It remains to be hoped that none of the tournaments will be postponed – the main thing is that there are no reasons for this.
