Barcelona Musical Magic Fountain: History of Creation

This fountain was built specifically for the 1929 World Exhibition.

This unusual singing fountain was designed by engineer Carlos Buigas.

The history of its implementation was not simple. The fact is that during the preparatory activities for the exhibition, it was decided to erect a symbol of the city. At 19In 1919, the architect Putsch and Cadafalch, according to his project, erected 4 Columns of Montjuic. They symbolize the 4 stripes of the Catalan flag.

But they were not destined to meet the guests of the World Exhibition. Exactly one year before this important event, the dictator Primo de Rivera ordered the destruction of this architectural creation.

It was then that a young, talented engineer-architect put forward his project of a singing fountain. The idea of Carlos Buigas was called the most ambitious, exceptionally bold and very expensive. However, thanks to the efforts of the architect and workers, without the support of the state, it came to life.

In just a year, a unique musical fountain was erected on the site of the destroyed columns. The day before the start of the exhibition, the singing fountain was presented to the public. It was badly damaged during the civil war. The fountain was reconstructed after 1955.

    “Magic” elements of the fountain

Musical accompaniment was added to the fountain in the 1980s. In 1992, a number of works were carried out on its restoration and restoration of mechanisms. The musical fountain was also supplemented with a color performance. The fountain is located on the way from Plaza de España up to the museum and the National Palace.

The fountain consists of several water jets controlled by mechanisms surrounded by smaller decorative ponds. Its dimensions: 65 by 59 meters. Just imagine that in one second about 2600 liters of water flows through three tanks. This makes it possible for more than 3620 jets to rise to a height of up to 54 meters! The underground waters of the Montjuic mountain are used for the musical fountain. This magical building is illuminated by many spotlights, special prisms of which reflect more than 50 colors.

This fantastic 30-minute show features classical and contemporary music. That is why the fountain is sometimes called singing or dancing . Hundreds of travelers rush to this magical fountain when the melody of the main song called “Barcelona” begins.

The fountain was called magical for a reason. It is these words – “magic”, “magic”, “extravaganza” that perfectly emphasize the colorfulness and uniqueness of this spectacle. People specially come here at a certain time to personally see this unforgettable performance.

The very first musical chords and colorful water jets soaring up to the beat of the melody captivate the audience.

The “magic” of the fountain is also used at some cultural events. So, in 2002, it became a kind of stage platform. Here, during the MTV European Music Awards ceremony, world-famous stars performed.
