February, most definitely, is an underrated month for traveling to Spain. The winter season along with hardly any public holidays are the reasons why most people spend February at home. But booking a holiday to Spain in February can be a rewarding experience. Lesser foot traffic means a drop in room prices at hotels and plenty of opportunities to have the attractions for yourself and a select few.

Spain Weather in February

Experience a different side of Spain in winter.

In comparison to other European countries, temperatures in Spain are mild during February. Cities on the south coast, such as Seville and Malaga, experience a warm winter with highs of 18℃ and lows of 8℃. Barcelona, given its Mediterranean climate, experiences a slightly colder but milder winter compared with other European countries. However, winters are colder in inland cities such as Madrid. The mercury in the Spanish capital generally hovers between 12℃ and 5℃ during this time of year. The temperature on the north coast is much more bearable, although the rain can hinder your outdoor plans in that region during February.

Spain in February: Travel Tips, Weather & More

Weather

Spain’s northern Atlantic coast and regions like Basque Country are typically the first to receive cold-weather fronts and storms. If you visit the north, expect averages to be in the 50s/40s (Fahrenheit) and pack for rain. Those arriving in Madrid and traveling around central Spain can expect slightly higher averages (but still hovering in the 50s) and much less precipitation due to the region’s location on the Meseta Central (central Iberian plateau).

If you’re going to Spain to beat miserable winter weather back home, then the Mediterranean coast and the southern region of Andalusia is where you want to go. There isn’t so much rain in February (averages between one and two inches), and temps often hit the low 60s. No surprise that you’ll find the absolute warmest weather throughout the year in the far south of Spain, as the winter is much milder in places like Extremadura and southern Andalusia, where highs are often in the mid-60s (18°C).

Crowds & Costs

Like January, the tourists, holidaymakers, nomadic revelers, and backpackers have mostly left the country due to the often inclement weather. Also disappearing this month are the high prices on hotels and flights that define the summer tourist season. Spain is an economy driven by tourism, with nearly 100 million visitors descending on the country yearly. Many come for sunny weather, and absent that, prices drop as hotels in hotspots like Barcelona, Mallorca, Cordoba, Murcia, Madrid, Seville, San Sebastián, and others compete for the few travelers that are visiting during this time.

Where to Go

If you’re interested in finding a locale with the best weather, southern Andalusia is where you want to go. Not only can you enjoy some sun, but you could also make a side trip to Gibraltar and lay eyes on the famous rock.

The entire Mediterranean coast gets less gloomy weather than the north. You could plan a road trip from Andalusia to Valencia and up to Barcelona and likely would enjoy the sun the majority of the time. Plus, that coastal drive along postcard-perfect beach towns and cities like Cádiz, Marbella, Cartagena, and Alicante is incredible any time of the year. Madrid is also a good option for a winter vacation, especially if you’re arriving in that city and flying out of it. While Madrid also sees less rain, the nightly desert winds can offer up quite the chill, so pack accordingly.

What to Do

If you do visit Andalusia, you’ll most certainly want to partake of the tapas culture; pull up a seat at a bar, café, or bodega, and the proprietor will serve you up some complimentary “small plates” so long as you’re washing the food down with a beer, wine, or a spirit.

Conversely, you could head to Basque Country and San Sebastián for pintxos (pronounced peenchos) culture. There’s an abundance of restaurants in San Sebastián’s historic center and elsewhere that display seemingly endless trays of gourmet pintxos along the bar, just waiting for hungry locals and tourists alike to come and sample the delicacies.

If you have the time to travel throughout Spain, you should use this less-crowded month to visit the most famous museums in the country. These include the Prado in Madrid, the Picasso Museum in Málaga, MACBA (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona), and the Guggenheim in Bilbao, located in a stunning 20th-century modern masterwork building by Frank Gehry.

Events in February

Day of Andalusia. This public holiday falls every year on the last day of February as Andalusians celebrate the 1980 referendum that granted this region autonomy. Schools and businesses are closed, and there are festivities, live music, and the singing of the region’s anthem, Himno de Andalucía (Hymn of Andalusia). The biggest celebrations are in places like Málaga, Granada, and Seville.

Weather in Spain in February

Winter in Spain is very mild. Only in the hills and northern regions does it vaguely resemble the Russian one. Throughout the rest of the continent, as a rule, it is associated with mid-autumn in the middle latitudes, and on the island part – from the second half of spring. The country owes such climatic “distortions” to its vast area and diverse landscape. If we consider February specifically, then it should be said that the weather forecast differs from the January one by an increase of a couple of degrees of average daily temperatures and a slight decrease in precipitation. However, due to the repeated change in the mood of the “heavenly office”, this “increase” is completely invisible: today – a clear sun, and tomorrow – rains and chilly winds. Therefore, when packing your bags, be sure to make sure that there is a sufficient amount of clothing suitable for both dry and wet days. And at the same time, keep in mind that this month is dominated by overcast. The lowest thermometer readings are recorded in ski resorts, which acquired a stable snow cover at the end of December. Most of them are concentrated in the Pyrenees, located in the north-east of Spain. During the day, it fixes about +1°C ..-3°C (depending on the elevation difference), and at night it is 3-5 degrees lower. There are also ski centers in the Sierra Nevada. Its stations are considered the southernmost in Europe. It is not surprising that during the daytime the air here warms up to relatively high plus marks – + 4 ° C.

Spain 14 day weather forecast →

After sunset, it cools down to -6°C. In one of the largest regions of Castile y León, in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, at noon it is about + 9 ° C, and as twilight thickens, slight frosts should be expected. Cloudy prevails in the capital, the sun pleases with its presence only occasionally. In this city, as in no other, the difference between day and night temperatures is especially noticeable: +2..+12°C. At the same time, a deviation from climatic norms, leading to snowfalls, is not excluded in Madrid. Fortunately, such anomalies stop very quickly. Much warmer in La Coruña and Barcelona: from +6..+7°C to +14°C. True, they are quite “wet”: about 11-14 days are marked by precipitation. The sunniest and driest region in the third winter month is the Valencia region, which has reliable protection in the west from the penetration of rain cyclones in the form of high hills. For example, on the Costa Blanca, weather forecasters count for two whole weeks, while only 4-5 days are “spoiled” by showers. As for the temperature regime, it is approximately the same as in all the southern provinces: at noon – up to + 17 ° C, and at nightfall – + 7 ° C. The title of the warmest place in mainland Spain rightfully belongs to the Costa del Sol: during the day it is + 18 ° C, and at night – at least + 10 ° C. So, in principle, winter things will be superfluous here. The Spanish islands deserve a separate line. In February, the Canaries are a spring oasis with lush blossoming nature, ripening exotic fruits and daytime temperatures of +20..+21°C.

What to do in Spain in February?

Hospitable Spain welcomes tourists at any time of the year. This is a year-round destination, so you can always count on a great vacation here. If in summer the emphasis is on amazing beaches randomly scattered across the mainland and archipelagos, then in winter ski centers come to the fore, which, thanks to their democratic prices, are never left without attention. The absence of crowds of tourists, which is the main characteristic of the low season, guarantees free access to popular attractions. But the capricious nature of the weather requires inquisitive travelers the ability to flexibly change their plans, quickly switching from outdoor activities to visits to indoor museums and galleries.

Beach holiday

In February, Spain does not indulge beachgoers. If she still gives a few sunny days conducive to sunbathing, then it is pointless to count on swimming for your own pleasure. The water is still cold, and dipping in it is fraught with a cold. In order not to be unfounded, here is a detailed synoptic report for you: the water temperature of the Mediterranean Sea on the Costa Brava and off the southernmost coast of Catalonia, the Costa Dorada, is only + 13 ° C, near the Costa Blanca – + 14 ° C, and coast of the Costa del Sol – a degree higher.

There is little hope for short swims in the Canary Islands, just 1.5 kilometers southwest of Africa. The temperature mark of the water in the Atlantic Ocean is kept at an average of + 19 ° C, with the exception of Lanzarote and Fuertoventura with + 18 ° C, where storms often occur. At the same time, the chances for such activities increase in their southern resorts, where locals sunbathe with might and main, master surfing and wear quite summer clothes. In the north, piercing winds blow and it rains quite often. Regarding Balearic, there is no point in going there: it is humid and the water is only +14°C.

Ski holidays

Still, in February, vouchers for ski resorts are in greater demand than for beach ones. At this time, they are experiencing an impressive influx of adherents of skiing. Here they are waiting for several mountain systems: the Sierra Nevada, the Pyrenees, the Cantabrian Cordillera and the Iberian mountains. They attract both beginners who are just getting on the “ski” and professionals who come here to improve their skills.

Among the undeniable advantages of the Spanish “skiing” are the excellent quality of the slopes, the superbly developed infrastructure, worthy of après-ski, high-level hotels and a lot of cultural monuments in the area. Staying in La Pinilla, you can easily visit the capital, and from the Sierra Nevada it is convenient to get to Granada. Biker-Beret allows you to join “the cream of society.” There are often members of the Royal family. In addition to skiing, Formigal invites you to soak up the spas, visit the wild animal park and attend tastings at local wineries.

Entertainment and excursions

What else do February tours to Spain offer? Of course, wide excursion possibilities, which are actually endless. They introduce the rich cultural heritage of the country, its centuries-old history and the unique architectural appearance of cities, each of which is beautiful in its own way. We advise you to dedicate fine days to walking tours. There are still few visitors, so this is a unique chance to experience the real magic of Spain, devoid of artificial embellishments.

Once in Madrid, be sure to visit the Prado Museum of Paintings and Sculptures and wander around the Palace of Catalan Music. In Barcelona, breathe in the scents of cherry blossom trees, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Gothic quarter and admire the Sagrada Familia. In Valencia, admire the romantic squares and exquisite palaces. And once in the Canary Islands, taste vegetables and fruits from local plantations and have plenty of fun in well-functioning water parks. If it suddenly starts raining, tune in to explore gastronomic routes that help you master the intricacies of national cuisine.

Holidays and festivals

A trip in February can significantly enrich your impressions, since this is the time of the hot carnival season. Its exact dates depend on the date of Easter, since it precedes the beginning of Lent. This is a time of unbridled fun, colorful processions, costumed parades, loud music and confetti. In general, the imagination of the participants of Spanish carnivals knows no bounds. The largest number of spectators gather in such cities as Sitges, Alicante, Tarragona, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Murcia, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Cadiz.

On February 12, in Barcelona, the memory of the heavenly patroness Eulalia is honored, in whose honor they arrange the holiday “Las fiestas de Santa Eulalia”. Seville hosts a traditional restaurant week, while Valencia organizes tapas tastings.

What are the prices for holidays in Spain in February?

In February, you can save a lot on the low season: minus 30-50% of the summer cost of tours. True, at ski resorts it has nothing to do with reality. There is no drop in tariffs for ski passes yet. Also, increased prices are observed in regions hosting carnivals.
