Skiing in Spain – A Guide to the Best Ski Resorts & Slopes
The main skiing regions of Spain are located in Aragon and the Catalonian Pyrenees, the Cantabrian, Iberian and Central mountains and the Penibetico mountain range in the south.
The Aragonese and Catalonian Pyrenees in Northern Spain is home to most of the country’s leading ski resorts although the Sierra Nevada located in the heart of Andalucia in Southern Spain ranks amongst the best.
There is also an enviable choice of ski resorts near Madrid, Galicia, Leon and Cantabria in the northwest and La Rioja and Teruel in the mid-north.
For winter sports and skiing enthusiasts, Spain currently offers over 1,000 kilometres of quality marked trails and slopes situated in over 36 ski resorts, half of which are proud owners of the Q awards for their quality tourism facilities and services offered.
And all this is set in a country that is ranked only second to Switzerland when it comes to the greatest number of mountains.
Spain may not presently be in the league of some of the Swiss, Austrian or French ski resorts however the tide is definitely turning as Spain becomes one of the best-value ski destinations in Europe.
Quality slopes, trails, facilities, snow-making equipment, ski schools, winter sports activities, ski hotels, and great food make Spain a hot ski and winter sports destination.
Skiing Spain
Ski And Winter Sports Travel
Skiing in Spain usually starts at the beginning of November and runs through to the end of April.
The ski resorts in Spain strive for excellence as they compete in the ski travel market against the Swiss and French resorts.
The lower pricing is one of the advantages that is making skiing in Spain a more attractive destination than its more illustrious counterparts in Austria, Switzerland and France.
There is the added advantage that many budget airlines fly to most parts of Spain, which makes it cheaper and more convenient for tourists to reach the ski stations in Spain than in other countries.
With the rising popularity of ski holidays in Spain, increased investment is being poured into this area of tourism.
Other areas that have been spruced up due to the ski resorts are easier access roads into the resorts, this has resulted in the growth of restaurants, parking and quality hotels nearer to the pistes.
Most of the resorts are very family orientated catering for all levels of skiers, and as skiing becomes ever more popular in Europe there are plenty of schools on hand with well-trained professional teachers to lend a hand with your first tentative steps on the slopes.

The skiing season in Spain lasts on average from the end of November to the end of March. Sierra Nevada – the most popular ski resort in Spain

This is the highest mountain range in continental Spain and the southernmost ski resort in Europe (palms and the sea are already starting 20 km from the snowy peaks). On its territory there are 6 areas for skiing and the international biosphere reserve Sierra Nevada National Park. On weekends, a lot of Spaniards come here, so there can be a long line at the lifts. Due to the high altitude (about 2100 m), the skiing season in Sierra Nevada lasts longer than in other resorts, until the end of May. The total length of the slopes in the Spanish ski resort Sierra Nevada exceeds 110 km, of which 18 are green, 40 blue, 51 red and 8 black slopes. The Aguila slope, about 6 km long, is considered the best skiing in Spain. There are illuminated trails for night skiing. All the pistes of this ski resort in Spain are located above the upper line of the forest cover, which makes the descent relatively safe, but there is no prevention of avalanche danger.
Spain’s Sierra Nevada ski resort offers opportunities for freestyle, mogul, snowboarding, halfpipe, parallel slalom, telemark and cross country skiing. The resort has a ski nursery and a kindergarten. The nearby village of Pradogliano has dozens of shops, cafes and discos. The Sierra Nevada hosted the Alpine World Championships in 1996, hosted the FIS Alpine Ski World Cups multiple times, and hosted the Winter Universiade in 2015.
It is most convenient to settle in the very center of the resort, in the Melia Sierra Nevada 4 * hotel, where there is an excellent restaurant, bar and other entertainment. Spa lovers should definitely book a room at Sol y Nieve 4*, whose Yhi Spa is considered the best in the Sierra Nevada. Large groups should like the GHM Monachil apartments, which can accommodate up to 8 people. Fans of rural romanticism will appreciate the comfort of the El Rio estate, located on the slopes of the National Park, a 5-minute drive from Granada.
Baqueira-Beret – the largest ski resort in Spain
The largest ski resort in Spain in the Pyrenees is called Baqueira-Beret. It is located 300 km from Barcelona, in the Catalan Val d’Aran. Baqueira-Beret is considered the snowiest resort in Spain, the density of snow cover here is exceptionally high. The total length of 71 pistes in three ski areas (Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua) is 110 km, of which 5 are green, 34 blue, 26 red and 6 black pistes. The best thermal hotel Baqueira-Beret is considered to be a miniature Val de Neu 5 *. Fans of living in a chalet will surely like Husa Chalet Bassibe 4 *, the design of which combines classical traditions and modern technologies. Those wishing to rent a house can choose between Casa Sisquet, Casa Massa, Casa Bellera, Casa Perich and dozens of other cozy houses.

Astun has a ski school, a kindergarten, a ski jump, a ski stadium, adult and children’s snow parks, as well as dozens of shops and restaurants. There is not a lot of housing in the resort itself, mainly budget hotels and hostels for young people – such as Vallibierna 2 * or Hostal Alpina 1 *.
Candanchu – the most extreme ski resort in Spain
Ski experts looking for some really challenging skiing during their winter holidays should head to Spain’s Candancha ski resort. This resort is located in the Astun valley. Boi Taul, Candanchu and Astun are part of the Aragonese Pyrenees. In these steep mountains, cut by narrow valleys and overgrown with forest, the sun almost always shines. All three of Spain’s ski resorts have been renovated and modernized in the process of Jaca’s nomination as the host city of the 2010 Winter Olympics. One of the most colorful hotels in the region, Charle 2 *, is located in Jaca. It occupies an 18th century building, but is equipped with all modern amenities, including high-speed internet.
Ski resorts of the Pyrenees in Spain
La Molina – the oldest ski resort in Spain
La Molina is the oldest ski resort in the Spanish Pyrenees, opened in 1909. La Molina is located in the Val de Nuria, 13 km from the border with Andorra. The height of the ski area ranges from 1700 to 2445 m. In total, there are 44 km of pistes of various degrees of difficulty: 7 green, 12 blue, 15 red and 6 black pistes. However, due to the fact that La Molina, together with the neighboring resort of Macella, form a single ski area of the Alps-2500, the total length of the slopes reaches 100 km, 80% of which pass through the forest. La Moline has 13 ski lifts, a 20 km long flat track, a ski kindergarten, a ski school with 200 instructors, snowshoe trails and hiking trails. In 2008, La Moline hosted the Alpine Skiing World Cup, and in 2011, the Snowboard World Championship.
Masella – the most forested ski resort in Spain
Macella is located 16 km from La Molina and, as already mentioned, forms a single Alp-2500 ski area with it. On the territory of this ski resort of the Pyrenees is the longest ski slope in the eastern region of the Pyrenees, the 7-kilometer Dues Estacions mas La Plana. The total length of slopes in Maselje is 72 km. Of the 62 trails, most of which pass through the picturesque forest, there are 9green, 23 blue, 22 red and 8 black. Altitude ranges from 1600 to 2535 m. Skiers of all skill levels can hone their skills in the La Pleta ski park.
Port del Comte
– Spain’s youngest ski resort
Port del Comte is a relatively young ski resort in Spain, opened in 1972. It is located 132 km from Barcelona and is divided into 2 zones: Ostal Sucre and Estivella. With its easy terrain, Port del Comte is popular with families and beginner skiers, and has a ski school and a children’s snowpark. The resort has 36 pistes, including 7 green, 11 blue, 13 red and 5 black. The total length of the slopes is 41 km, the height varies from 1700 to 2400 m. There are 10 lifts in this Pyrenees ski resort, but there are no illuminated slopes. It is best to live in Port del Comte in inexpensive youth hotels, for example, Avet 1 *, Alberg Mirador or in cottages like Cal Marti, El Porxo de la Creu and Casa Vilasalo.
The stylish La Molina Alp 4* hotel, located very close to the slopes and having an amazing spa, is in great demand among the guests of Alp-2500. Half an hour away is the luxurious castle hotel Torre del Remei 5 *, the most aristocratic in the skiing region of the Pyrenees of Spain. A good choice for tourists looking for a good hotel without any frills is HG La Molina 4 * at the very foot of the ski station. Some distance from the slopes, you can find romantic chalets ideal for families and groups, such as Niu dels Falcons.
As already mentioned, skiing in Spain is not the only winter entertainment. Spain’s ski resorts offer opportunities for many other sports: Sierra Nevada has an ice rink, mountain bike trails and toboggan runs, Baqueira Beret has a paragliding school, La Molina has sledding, and the city The Alpe can be flown in a hot air balloon, paraglider or sports plane. Skiing in Spain in the Sierra Nevada is easy to combine with a seaside holiday: the beaches of the entire Costa del Sol are half an hour away. Baqueira-Beret attracts not only athletes, but also gourmets: in the Aran Valley there are several dozen excellent restaurants with national and European cuisine, for example, Casa Irene.
But even outside the ski resorts of Spain, winter holidays are quite exciting. Thousands of tourists come here for the New Year and Christmas, and in February, carnival, the brightest holiday of the year, takes place in different provinces of the country. Discounts and sales in stores make winter an ideal time for shopping tours. In addition, winter on the southern coast of Spain attracts those tourists for whom summer holidays at sea are contraindicated due to the heat: in winter, on the southern coast, the air temperature almost never drops below 20º, and the water below 17º, which creates quite acceptable conditions for walking, sunbathing and even swimming in the sea.
