5 best Barcelona modernist restaurants (two by Gaudi)
DID YOU KNOW THERE IS A GAUDI RESTAURANT IN BARCELONA? (ACTUALLY TWO)
Barcelona keeps a few modernist restaurants from the early 1900’s. The city was experiencing a golden period in those times, and the Art Nouveau architecture, locally called “Modernisme”, flourished. During daytime, you are likely to explore the Gaudi sites and other modernist buildings in the Eixample district.
Actually our Eixample Tour includes some of these modernist restaurants and cafés! So in the evenings, why not continuing to enjoy that old-fashioned and decadent atmosphere of by dinning in one of our marvelous art nouveau venues?
The Brooks were total Modernism fans, and they asked me for some recommendations. Do you want to know where I sent them? Today, I’ll share with you my favorite ones.
AN ANTONI GAUDI TOUR THAT WILL SURPRISE YOU
Here our favorite modernist restaurants for an unforgettable dinner in Barcelona:
El Cafè de la Pedrera
The mezzanine of Casa Mila (also called La Pedrera) has been transformed into a bistrot offering elaborated Catalan cuisine – the second Gaudi restaurant in town! The food choices are limited, but the quality is nice, plus you get the unique opportunity to dine under the twisted ceilings designed by Gaudi and his assistant Jujol.
Make sure to check out if there is any event going on or a package available: you might get to visit La Pedrera by Night before dinner, or dine enjoying some live music, depending on the day.

Casa Alfonso
If you are looking instead for an informal tapas night, then you better head to this bar not far from Plaça Catalunya, famous for their beautiful ham and cold cuts, and the great bread of their sandwiches. It’s currently run by the Alfonso García, 3rd generation of “Alfonso” in the family (Alfonso Jr Jr?).

Els Quatre Gats
The famous Chat Noir café in Paris inspired a Barcelona bohemian guy to open a venue in town where the local artists could gather up. It was too bohemian for Gaudi’s taste, but it was frequented by other personalities of the time, including a very young Picasso.
PICASSO WALKING TOUR OF BARCELONA
He used to hang up there, exhibited some of his drawings (you can see copies hanging in the walls), and even designed the cover of the restaurant menu.
Despite being closed for over 70 years, it reopened a few decades ago preserving the old original decoration. The food is just correct, but you go there for the ambiance! And at night they have live piano music.

La Dama
If you are planning a romantic evening to charm your sweet heart (and you don’t mind spending some good money to do that…), this restaurant is what you are looking for! The entrance hall of the building could perfectly rival with the wildest Gaudi, but with a magical touch of elegance. They also feature a fun coctkail bar to continue your special evening after dinner.

AND BONUS! What’s the other Gaudi restaurant in Barcelona?
China Crown (former Casa Calvet)
When the classy and traditional Casa Calvet restaurant closed, locals cried its loss. It was a beautiful opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous interiors designed by Gaudi for the offices of the textile business of the Calvet family.
TOUR OF GAUDI EARLY WORKS
But it took a short while until the venue was reopened with an interesting proposal: a high end Imperial Chinese restaurant that has respected Gaudi’s designed while combining them with tasteful Oriental decoration.

The capital of Catalonia is rich not only in its architectural, but also gastronomic attractions. In order not to get lost in a large selection of restaurants and cafes, we have selected for you places where you can eat deliciously and save money, because there are still many interesting excursions in Barcelona ahead.

Well-known in eighteen countries, Wok to Walk fast food restaurant chain offers healthy Asian cuisine cooked by a chef over a high fire right in front of you.
Everyone can make their own order by choosing a side dish, toppings and sauce, so the place is suitable even for strict vegetarians. Due to the fact that each ingredient is paid, you yourself can adjust the price of the finished dish. For a large portion of “wok” (which you can take with you and divide into several meals), the average price tag will be 6 euros.
The restaurant is open at three locations in the city (95 Les Rambles, 7 Jaume I St., 27 Sant Pau St.) for guests daily from 12:00 to 2:00 am.

To the delight of vegetarians and fans of healthy eating, Barcelona has a vegan burger cafe Gopal. A small, cozy establishment can be found at 42 Carrer Escudellers.

There is one caveat – payment here is accepted only in cash.
Food for every taste – Boqueria market
On the famous Ramblas is the equally famous Boqueria market – the largest in Europe. To buy quality goods here at a low price, you need to go to the farthest part of the market, this is exactly what the locals do.
Don’t forget to check products right at the counter and don’t hesitate to ask for a replacement if you don’t like it. One of the most economical options is to cook your own food, but not everyone has such an opportunity, so you can have a bite right on the market in one of the cafes on the canopy or drink freshly squeezed juice for 1 euro.
It’s best to come here either early in the morning (by 7:00-8:00) or close to closing (18:00-19:00), then there is every chance to get a big discount.
Venezuelan sandwiches at La Taguara
In Barcelona you can find almost all world cuisine. For example, in the La Taguara establishment, excellent “arepas” are prepared – cornmeal tortillas with a filling of your choice (avocado, beans, cheese, fried bananas, meat, etc. ) originally from Latin America. On high tables you can see various free sauces that can also be added to a sandwich.
The average cost of one “arepa” is about 4 euros. It is also worth trying juices from papaya, passion fruit and other exotic fruits.

Fresh Italian food – “Carabassa Restaurant”
In the Gothic quarter at Carrer Carabassa, 19 is a cozy “Carabassa Restaurant”, which serves amazing Italian pasta and snacks (especially delicious baked provolone cheese with tomatoes). You should definitely try at least one dessert, such as local tiramisu or homemade ice cream.

From Tuesday to Sunday, the restaurant is open from 13:00 to 16:00, and then resumes work from 20:00 to 23:00

There are 5 restaurants in Barcelona belonging to this chain. We recommend visiting the one next to the Mercat del Born market at Comercial, 7. This place, unexplored by tourists, is very loved by Barcelona residents.
