Repertoire guide for the first ten days of December
A poster for the first ten days of December, the most festive month of the year, has been published on the Mariinsky Theater website. On this occasion, the repertoire includes many magical, fabulous and bright performances, premieres and special events.
New Otello
On December 3, Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera Otello, staged in 1996 and now restored by director Mikhail Smirnov, will return to the stage. In the anniversary year for the theatre, Valery Gergiev set a course for the resumption of performances, which became notable successes 1990s. Interestingly, the historical premiere of Othello at the Mariinsky took place 135 years ago – on November 26 (December 8), 1887.
This opera requires a first-class cast of singers. On December 3, the world opera star Khibla Gerzmava, a guest soloist of the Musical Theater named after M. Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Arsen Soghomonyan and one of the main modern Verdi singers Vladislav Sulimsky. Musical director and conductor – Valery Gergiev.
Shchedrin-90
December 16, a great friend of the Mariinsky Theater and Valery Gergiev, composer Rodion Shchedrin turns ninety. In honor of the jubilee of the master, the Mariinsky prepared a large-scale “musical offering”: Shchedrin’s compositions were put on the poster in a whole block, many of which can only be heard today at the Mariinsky, and some were written specifically for the theater and its artistic director.
Three events in the Concert Hall open the series: on December 10 and 11, the Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev will perform Shchedrin’s music. The program of the first day includes the famous “Naughty ditties”. 11 December – the opera The Enchanted Wanderer, staged especially for the Mariinsky Concert Hall.
You can learn more about the cooperation between the theater and the composer and prepare for attending performances and concerts with his music thanks to the Shchedrin-90 project on the theater website.
Other significant dedications include Eugene Onegin staged by Yuri Temirkanov. The performance, which has become an important milestone in the history of the Mariinsky Theatre, will be given on the birthday of the maestro – December 10th. On December 8, Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly performance is dedicated to the memory of Yuri Marusin.
Opera Huguenots
The Mariinsky Theater continues to explore new repertoire. On December 5, Valery Gergiev and the theater staff will present the first and second acts of Giacomo Meyerbeer’s opera The Huguenots in a concert performance. This work, now rarely performed, at one time enjoyed stable and lasting success with the public: until the beginning of the 20th century, it did not leave posters all over the world, withstanding over a thousand performances in the Grand Opera alone. In anticipation of the performance with the orchestra, fragments of the opera will also be heard with piano accompaniment – on November 26, three acts will be given in a chamber format in the Rachmaninov Hall.
“Nyurgun Bootur”
The premiere of the opera “Nyurgun Bootur” by Mark Zhirkov and Genrikh Litinsky in the Yakut language (with Russian subtitles) will also be a bright event in the poster. As a basis, the authors used the largest epic creation of the Sakha people – olonkho, which is ranked among the most ancient, archaic layers of the world epic.
