Valencia Central Market – description, location, photo
Valencia Central Market (Mercado Central de Valencia) is considered the oldest and largest in Europe. It contains more than 1,500 places for trade, but even on such a scale, everything is clean, tidy, and the process is perfectly organized. This colorful, colorful, lively outlet, where the world’s best producers of agricultural products do business, is a kind of architectural monument and a local landmark.
With its central façade, the Valencian Market faces Placa del Mercat. This market square is home to many small cafes and restaurants where you can taste the freshest products bought directly from the market.
History of the market
The market in Piazza Valencia has existed for more than 800 years, and trade has been going on here since the Middle Ages. However, by 1839 it became clear that uncontrolled trade was impossible in a large European city. The local authorities decided to erect a stationary market building, but made it as a simple shed. In it, merchants very quickly began to run out of space, so it was decided to build a covered stationary building.
The architectural design of Alejandro Soler and Francisco Guardia won the competition. For the construction of the building, almost a dozen houses near the square were demolished; they interfered with the realization of the ideas of the authors who worked in the Art Nouveau style. Construction began in 1914 and ended in 1928. The King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, personally opened the new commercial building.
An incredibly beautiful, original building with unique stained-glass windows, hand-forged decorative elements and an airy dome has become a hallmark of Valencia.

Architecture Central Market of Valencia
The market is located in the central part of the city, on Mercado Square (Placa del Mercat), not far from the building of the famous Lonja Silk Exchange – de la Seda (Lonja de la Seda). The old street of La Paya (Calle la Paya) separates the Central Market from the church of Santos Juanes (la iglesia Santos Juanes). From the opposite side of the Central Market, there is a beautiful view of Palafox, Plaza En Gall and Calle de las Calabasas.
This impressive bazaar, one of the oldest and largest in the Old World, covers over 8,000 sq.m.
The metal frame of the building is made in the modernist architectural style of the early 20th century. It is covered by the central dome of the so-called fruit zone, the small one is located above the fish zone. The height of the central, mounted glass and metal rises by 30 meters.
Inside, both domes are lined with original ceramics, they have fairly wide openings for natural light.
The market building combines marble, stone, glass, ceramic tiles and mosaics, metal, tiles, columns, domes, stained-glass windows, conveying the features of Art Nouveau architecture.
You can enter the room by a wide staircase equipped with three arches, stone columns and metal canopies (awnings), which are mounted on ornate pillars. Large windows let in daylight.
The market is divided into certain zones – separately selling fish and fruits and vegetables. The small dome crowning the rows of fish is decorated with a weather vane with the image of a fish. A large dome covering the fruit and vegetable rows is decorated with a weather vane with the image of a parrot. The Valencians still call it Cotorra del mercat – “Market Parrot”, considering it a symbol of market gossip.
To the left of the market is the former administration of La Llotjeta. The building is faced with colored ceramic tiles, on its facade there is a coat of arms with a crown and lions, and a weather vane with a dragon flaunts on the spire.
Today the premises belong to the bank.
What can you buy on the market?
The Valencian market is a real temple of gastronomy. Meat and fish, cheeses, olives, greens, vegetables, spices are laid out on the stands with bright mountains and pyramids. Fruits, nuts, berries and citrus fruits are stunning with a riot of colors and smells. The Spanish national delicacy, dry-cured pork ham jamon impresses with its quantity and assortment.
Pata negra or black leg is considered the best variety of jamon. It is the meat of an Iberian black pig that feeds on acorns and is raised in open pastures.
Seafood stands impress with their scale and variety – crayfish, crabs, shrimps of all sizes, snails, mussels, octopuses, cuttlefish, sea urchins. You can even buy sea eel here.
Step a few meters away from the tents with phantasmagoric sea still lifes and feel the aromas of spices. Here the stand is dedicated to saffron, one of the main ingredients of Valencian paella.
Butchers’ stalls are located a little aside, the sight is clearly not for the faint of heart – on the counters huge pieces of meat are adjacent to the heads, legs, ears, tails, tongues of horned and ungulates. Nearby hang carcasses of whole rabbits, which are also the most important element of paella.
All products can be tasted before you buy – this is the custom here. Gourmets are offered to taste seafood dishes. They also insist on trying fragrant fresh bread, poured with olive oil and a piece of Iberian ham.
Due to the huge selection of fresh, quality products, restaurateurs and residents of the city come to buy food very early, the Valencian market opens at 7 am. And after a few hours, all these delicacies are on the tables.
Tourists can wander between the rows, tents, stands filled with aromas and colors of the gifts of the earth and the sea until three in the afternoon, when trade is curtailed, and the Central Market of Valencia freezes until a new day.
