And you’ll get to know the real people behind the cava and wine production in the Penedes wine region.

The Penedes wine area is located only 30 minutes drive away from Barcelona and is home to over 300 wine producers, thus offering a large variety of wines to be discovered. In total, no less than 8 tastings of the finest organic, small-batch wines and cava are included in this private Barcelona wine tour.

For lunch, we’ll take you to a local’s only restaurant to indulge in traditional flavors. Prepare to feast like never before! We sometimes met friendly, influent winemakers of the area over lunch. REQUEST PENEDES WINE TOUR

We are currently looking for options to reduce the CO2 emissions for this experience. We aim to use hybrid or electric vehicles on the long term, as public transportation is not available in the area.

Both wineries offer local wines, most of them being made from local grapes. The food served at the restaurant is local and seasonal and the dishes are made following traditional Catalan recipes.

All the wineries we visit in our Penedes Wine Tour are certified organic. The restaurants we go to offer local and seasonal ingredients mostly sourced from local artisans. Some of the ingredients are organic, although not all of them (we’re pressing them to add more to the menu, but it takes time!).

The guide, the wineries and the restaurant all have strict policies of recycling. All the plastic, glass and paper waste produced is recycled. Non-recycled waste in this Barcelona wine tour is close to 0.

By purchasing this experience, you’re supporting 2 organic, local, family run wineries. You’re also participating in the preservation of the gastronomic heritage of the Penedes area by supporting a traditional local restaurant.

Penedès wine region.

Spain in Russian

If you try to find the Spanish Penedes on Google maps, you will see the only attraction – the Wine Museum in Vilafranca del Penedes (Vilafranca del Penedes), the capital of the region. The museum is located in the former royal palace of the 13th century (Museo de Las Culturas del Vino de Catalunya) and bears the sonorous name Vinseum. Its exposition is devoted to the history of the wine trade in this region and the culture of consumption of sparkling wines. The town itself is quite pleasant and lively, with beautiful classical architecture, gothic basilicas and of course plenty of liquor stores where you can buy cava and wine at no extra cost.

Spain is traditionally associated with Rioja wines, but Penedès is a real treasure trove for connoisseurs of fine wines. Grape crops have been cultivated on these lands since the 4th century BC. The unique elevation variation and fertile soil allow for the cultivation of both special local and international varieties. The centuries-old traditions of winemaking have been passed down from generation to generation all these years without interruption. It was in Penedès that the sparkling wine cava was invented. Despite the fact that the idea of producing Spanish sparkling wine is taken from Champagne, cava does not pretend to be a replica of French wine, as it does not seek to be a symbol of luxury. It is more of an uplifting wine accessible to all. Cava, with its charm of bright fruity aromas and refreshing citrus taste, has become a completely new, special product and the pride of Penedès, and at the same time of the whole of Spain.

Today, people from all over the world come to Penedès to visit one or more wineries and see this miracle with their own eyes. We will tell you about a visit to the most famous and successful bodega today – Pere Ventura.

Kava Palace

“In this complex world, my message is: this is my contribution, this is my cava, this is my brand and this is my name: Pere Ventura. I have no secrets from you! So simple and unpretentious sounds the slogan of Pere Ventura on behalf of its founder. This openness is the secret of success, because Pere Ventura, since its founding in 1992 is one of the leaders in the production of cava, harmoniously combining winemaking traditions with the most advanced technologies.

Well, since there are no secrets, then we are going to the holy of holies Pere Ventura – on an excursion to the winery. This is a small estate with one building, and underground there are cellars and production. The vineyards are located elsewhere. The company has hundreds of hectares of its own vineyards, but also cooperates with other farmers, constantly monitoring the entire process of growing and harvesting grapes.

“Kava Palace” is the first thing that comes to mind. It was impossible to imagine that the winery is not a godforsaken courtyard in the wilderness of the Spanish Pyrenees, but a real palace in gold and marble. Guests are met not by Pere Ventura himself, but by his wife Mireia. Pere Ventura was founded only 24 years ago, but today is one of the most successful in Spain, producing 250 million bottles of wine per year. The wife of the owner of a company of this magnitude in Russia can be met in Courchevel or Nice, but certainly not at the reception desk. However, Mireia Ventura manages to kindly shake hands with all the guests of the “palace”, and look menacingly at his employees, advise, sell cava and just look good.

The culture shock continued when we were met by our guide, a neat young man in a uniform with a flashlight. Usually Catalans don’t bother to follow a business dress code. Kindly warning that there will be many descents and turns along the way, he invited us to enter. The Pere Ventura wine cellars are three levels deep and two kilometers long. Cava bottles are laid out along the walls in the traditional way – in a strictly horizontal position and corked with metal corks for the aging time in order to prevent the smell of cork from admixing with the aroma of the drink. Kava is much more sensitive to foreign odors than regular wine.

The cellars are built in the traditional Catalan style, located at a depth of 23 meters and have vaulted arches. All galleries and corridors are interconnected, it is easy to move around here. Each street of this underground city has its own name. In the illuminated bottles fixed on the walls, you can see the settling yeast. Slowly moving from hall to hall, we saw the whole process of obtaining an inspiring drink.

Pere Ventura produces cava from three local grape varieties – Charello, Parellada and Macabeo. They grow here at three well-defined elevation levels. Wines are aged both in bottles and in wooden barrels, which occupy a separate room.

The main secret kept by the Pere Ventura winery is a room called the Chapelle. The high vaulted ceiling resembles a church altar. There is no electricity here, and candle stubs are visible on a huge stone table. The most aged bottles of cava have been stored in this room for decades, Mr. Ventura himself and his winemakers come here and drink a bottle only on special occasions.

At the end of the tour, the guide shows the production line, where yeast is extracted from bottles using machines, corking and labeling takes place. On the busiest days, such as before Christmas, this line produces up to 100 bottles of cava per hour. Production hall with an area of 2.5 thousand square meters. meters, where the latest equipment is installed, is located underground, which allows you to maintain optimal temperature conditions. Production control is carried out both by special machines and by experienced employees.

We also learned that Pere Ventura comes from a noble family of winemakers. His ancestors stood at the origins of the creation of kava at the end of the 19th century. As a fourth generation winemaker, Pere Ventura is not afraid to experiment and is personally responsible for the quality of the product with his name.

The tour ends with a tasting with traditional Catalan starters: almond truffles, bread bars, smoked sausage and hard cheese.

Top 3 cava varieties from Pere Ventura:

Tresor Rosé is the best of the best, the winner of many competitions and ratings. This wine is 100% made from the rare Trepat red grape variety, which grows only in Spain. This variety of cava impresses with its intense aroma, captivates with a rare shade, pleases with freshness and fruity notes of taste.

Tresor Brut Reserva is a true treasure, an elegant blend of the three traditional cava grape varieties Charello, Macabeo and Parellada.

Brut Reserva Cupatge D´Honor Vintage 2011 – a blend of Charello and Chardonnay, refined, thick and harmonious aroma and taste of mature wine.
