What to expect at Park Guell

Park Guell was a residential complex designed by architect Antoni Gaudi between 1900 to 1914.

The complex was to have 60 houses, but when nobody came forward to buy the homes, the project got abandoned.

After a few years, the authorities turned it into a Public Park.

Park Guell has two parts –

1. Monumental Zone – Park Guell’s Monumental Zone has all of Gaudi’s work, and visitors must buy tickets to enter.

2. Public Park – This area is open to all but doesn’t have Gaudi’s work.

Monumental Zone’s attractions

The Monumental Zone occupies 5% of the total area of Park Guell.

This section of Guell Park contains most of Antoni Gaudi’s work, which the tourists come to see.

The must-see attractions in this zone are:

  1. Guard Museum (Museu del Guarda)
  2. Hypostyle Room (Sala Hipòstila)
  3. Gardens of Austria (Jardins d’Àustria)
  4. Wash House Portico (Pòrtic de la Bugadera)
  5. Nature Square or terrace (Plaça de la Natura)
  6. The Roadways, Paths, and Viaducts

Here is a quick video to give you an idea of what to expect inside Park Guell’s Monumental Zone –

Most visitors opt for Skip The Line tickets, the cheapest and most popular way to enter Park Guell.

If you also plan to visit Sagrada Familia, check out the Gaudi Bundle.

Find out about the different types of Park Guell tickets available.

Park Guell tickets

When you buy Park Guell tickets at the venue, you get a physical ticket (as in the pic). However, it is best if you buy your tickets online because you can then avoid waiting in the long ticket counter lines. Image: Intermiles.com

There are three ways to explore Park Guell – you can book a self-guided tour, a guided tour or a combo guided tour of both Park Guell and Sagrada Familia.

When you book them online, you can save yourself time, energy, and money and walk into the attraction right away.

Why online tickets are better

There are three advantages to buying Park Guell tickets online.

1. When bought online, Park Guell tickets are €1 cheaper per person

2. When you book online tickets, you can walk past the long lines at the ticket counter and enter Park Guell right away. That is, there is no waiting.

3. Online tickets help you avoid what we call the ‘curse of the timed ticket.’

Let us explain this ‘curse’ in little more detail –

Park Guell allows only 400 tourists to enter every half hour.

The following 400 tourists get moved to the next half-hour slot, and so on.

This is why Park Guell tickets have a time mentioned on them.

How online tickets work

When you book your Park Guell tickets online, you select your preferred time of visit.

Immediately after purchase, your tickets get emailed to you.

You don’t need to take any printouts.

Now all you must do is, reach the tourist attraction 15 minutes before the time mentioned on your ticket.

Since you have a ticket and are on time, you can show it on your smartphone and walk into Park Guell right away.

How offline tickets work

It can get very crowded at Park Guell’s Monumental zone. Oleg Zaslavsky / Shutterstock.com

When you buy your tickets at Park Guell, you may have to wait in the long ticketing queue, and you may also have to wait for your time slot to arrive.

Here is a timeline to help you understand this better:

– You arrive at Park Guell at 11 am

– After waiting in the ticketing queue for an hour, you finally buy your tickets at 12 noon

– Since all tickets till 1 pm were sold out (remember, only 400 visitors are allowed inside every half hour), your ticket has 1 pm mentioned on it

– Even though you have your Park Guell ticket, you still have to hang around at the entrance of Park Guell till 1 pm

This additional 1-hour wait is known as the ‘curse of the timed ticket.’

Best of Barcelona Bundle €90

Is Park Guell worth it?

Park Guell is worth a visit for four reasons – it is Antoni Gaudi’s most refined masterpiece, at just €13.50 for entry, is a value for money attraction, a visit to Park Guell comes with a city tour, and you get to sit on the world’s longest bench.

We strongly recommend paying the entrance fee for the Monumental Zone at Park Guell and checking out all Gaudi’s work.

1. There is nothing like Park Guell, elsewhere

Since almost all of Antoni Gaudi’s work is concentrated around Barcelona, you can only see his masterpieces while holidaying in the city.

Park Guell is not a multi-destination attraction like Madam Tussauds or Disneyland, which you can experience during your next vacation elsewhere.

The exclusivity makes Park Guell worth visiting.

2. It is value for money

For a general ticket costing only €13.50 and a discounted ticket price of Euros €9.33, what you see inside the Park Guell Monumental zone is totally worth it.

In comparison, Casa Batllo’s tickets cost €35, and Sagrada Familia tickets cost €31.60.

3. A trip to Park Guell comes with a city tour

Your trip to Park Guell from the center of Barcelona will cost you €2.5.

Even though the journey by bus lasts only around 20 minutes, you get to see parts of the city you won’t otherwise visit.

4. World’s longest bench is in Park Guell

Mariamichelle / Pixabay. com

The Egyptians gave ergonomic chairs to their Gods as long back as 7500 BC.

However, Antonio Gaudi decided to do one better at Park Guell.

The colorful, mosaic-embedded bench he built at Park Guell is 110 meters (361 feet) long.

It is said to be the longest undulating bench in the world.

The opportunity to sit on this bench and snap a selfie makes Park Guell worth it.

Best time to visit Park Guell

The best time to visit Park Guell is before 9 am.

When you start early, you avoid the crowd, especially the group tours coming in by 10 am.

With fewer people and early morning light, you also get to take stunning photographs of the colorful Barcelona attraction.

You can buy your tickets in advance, reach Park Guell by 8.30, walk around the free parts of the park for some time and then get into the ticketed Monumental Zone.

How long does Park Guell take

Visitors who stop for photos, read guides, and spend time looking at the intricate detailing at Gaudi’s masterpiece spend around 90 to 120 minutes exploring Park Guell.

Tourists in a hurry are known to finish exploring Park Guell in an hour.

Some sit on the Park Guell bench and spend time, and many others climb up to the stone cross at the top of Park Guell and get panoramic views of the city.

Usually, visitors want to know how long it takes to tour Park Guell for three reasons –

1. Since Park Guell is on the outskirts of Barcelona, this information helps tourists plan their trip better.

2. They want to know if they will have the time to visit both Park Guell and Sagrada Familia on the same day.

3. Both Park Guell and Sagrada Familia have timed entry, which means you need to be at the entrance within 30 minutes of the time mentioned on your ticket. Therefore, being aware of the ‘tour duration’ helps book tickets at the right time.

Park Guell free entry

Visitors can enter most of the Park Guell areas for free.

Only Park Guell’s Monumental Zone, which is 5% of the massive park, is access controlled.

Most of architect Antonio Gaudi’s work is in the monumental zone, which is what tourists pay to enter.

Access controls are put in place at 8 am (during the low season months, at 8.30 am) and are removed at the closing time.

The park’s closing time varies as per the season.

Tourists can enter Park Guell for free before the access controls are put in place or after they are removed at night.

For free entry, the best time to visit Park Guell is before the access controls are placed at 8 am.

Once you enter without tickets, you can stay inside for as long as you want.

Should you visit Park Guell at night

While visiting Park Guell at night for free is a lot of fun, it is much better to see it during the day. A. Aleksandravicius / Shutterstock.com

While it is possible to visit Park Guell at night and that too for free, we don’t recommend it for multiple reasons.

The beauty of Park Guell lies in its color and landscaping, and at night, you miss both.

Since Park Güell is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the officials can install only limited artificial light sources.

As a result, once the sun goes down at night, there is not much illumination in Guell Park.

Yet another reason we don’t recommend free entry at night time is the presence of many salesmen trying to sell all kinds of souvenirs.

Second visit?

If you have already seen Parc Guell during the day, we recommend you make a second visit at night.

Since Park Guell is higher than the city of Barcelona, you get some of the best views of Barcelona city from Park Guell.

How to reach Park Guell

Park Guell is situated off Carrer d’Olot in Barcelona.

Bus Guell

Taking Bus Guell is perhaps the best way to reach Park Guell.

It is an easy-to-use shuttle service that starts from just outside Alfons X Metro station and takes you to Park Guell in just 15 minutes.

You can get on to any L4 Metro train or take a bus to reach Alfons X station.

After exploring Park Guell, you can board the same shuttle service to return to Alfons X station.

The best part is, the use of this shuttle service is included in your Park Guell entrance ticket when you buy them online.

Metro to Park Guell

Get onto Green Line (L3) Metro and get off at either Lesseps Station or Vallcarca Station – Park Guell is between these two stations.

From Vallcarca station

From Vallcarca, which is also referred to as Park Guell Metro station, Park Guell is a 20-minute walk.

Most tourists prefer the Vallcarca stop because it is a downward walk.

Once you get down, the best route will be to take the escalator on Baixada de la Glòria and then head for the entrance on Passatge de Sant Josep de la Muntanya.

From Lesseps station

Lesseps Metro station is lower than Park Guell, so we recommend it for the return journey.

From the Gaudi masterpiece, Lesseps station is also a 20-minute walk away.

Barcelona subway lines run seven days a week. Map of Barcelona Metro

Bus to Park Guell

Bus D40 and H6 ply towards Park Guell, and you must get down at the Travessera de Dalt bus stop.

A brisk ten minutes walk can get you to Park Guell.

Park Guell Metro or Bus?

If you are short on time, take the Metro, which reaches faster.

Buses take longer, but you get a better view of the city on your way.

Tourists also prefer buses over Metro because the walking distance from the bus stop is shorter than from the Metro station.

Park Guell opening hours

During the peak months of May to August, Park Guell opens at 8 am, and the last entry is at 8.30 pm.

During shoulder season months of April, September, and October, it opens at 8 am, but entry is allowed only till 7. 30 pm.

With few tourists from November to March, Park Guell opens at 8.30 am and allows entries until 6 pm.

Tourist Season Opening Last entry

28 Oct to 24 Mar (Low) 8.30 am 6 pm

Access controls to get into the Monumental Zone of Park Guell are removed an hour after the last entry.

Tip: Even though Park Guell officially closes at the ‘last entry’ time mentioned above, you can still go in after the access controls get removed. Just that with limited illumination you won’t be able to enjoy the Park.

Park Guell audio guide

If you need help to explore Park Guell but find the guided tours too costly, the Park Guell audio guide is a good option.

You can follow one of the recommended walking routes in Park Guell and combine it with the Park Guell audio guide app for an excellent experience.

The guide, which is in the form of a mobile app, provides information, photographs, interactive maps, and audio to supplement the route.

Park Guell app is available in seven languages, and you can download it for both Android and iPhone.

Taking photographs in Park Guell

Many photographers spend hours in Antoni Gaudi’s amazing Park Guell. Page Light Studios / Shutterstock.com

If photography in Park Guell is your prime objective, early morning visits end up being better.

The morning light helps the colorful mosaics in Park Guell come out well in your photographs.

Early morning visits also mean fewer people in your photographs.

Photographers prefer to enter Park Guell from the Carmel Entrance, which is higher, and walk down snapping photographs.

The good thing about early morning photography at Park Guell is that you can then reach Sagrada Familia by afternoon.

Tip: Sagrada Familia can be best photographed in the late afternoon when the light enters the stained glass at an angle. Find out how to go from Park Guell to Sagrada Familia

Park Guell map

Park Guell is on Carmel Hill in Barcelona.

It is best explored on foot and with ample time to spare.

Because of the exploratory nature of this tourist attraction, it is best if visitors carry along with Park Guell maps or recommended walking routes with them.

Most tourists get a printout of Park Guell’s map or recommended walking route and carry it along.

After all, nobody wants to miss out on must-see items in the Park Guell. Or keep walking around in circles.

Park Guell involves a lot of climbing up and climbing down.

We suggest you contact the Park authorities at the entrance and get the Park Guell route map customized for tourists with limited mobility.

If you don’t want to miss out on anything and prefer a guide to tell you where to go next, book a guided tour of Park Guell.

Save money with Barcelona Card. Choose from 3-5 days and enjoy free travel on public transport and free offers at various attractions. Buy BCN card
