Guide to the Best Paella Restaurants in Barcelona — Barcelona Food Experience

Written By Maria

I often get the question from visitors of where to find a good paella in Barcelona. It is not easy to find a really good one, especially considering how many restaurants offer them on their menu. I have created this post to help you find the best ones and what mistakes to avoid, and a list of the best paella restaurants in Barcelona in my humble opinion!

Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Finding a good paella is not easy. For anyone who is new to Barcelona, here are some rules.

  • It’s difficult, if not impossible, to get a good paella anywhere close to the Ramblas or Sagrada Familia, unless you have a local source who’s named a specific place.

  • Don’t ever go to any place where they have a photo of a paella on a menu outside.

  • Don’t ever go to a place where there’s a guy outside telling you that they have paella.

  • Paella is preferably eaten for lunch, not dinner.

  • Top tip: make sure you book in advance, it can be difficult to score a table without a reservation.

Also important to remember: paella is just one of the many rice dishes that are worth trying. And you can find both vegetarian and vegan rice dishes. And if you don’t like seafood don’t worry, at a good restaurant that specialises in rice dishes they will have options with meat instead of fish or shellfish.

This list is obviously completely subjective, everyone have their favorite places for paella and rice dishes. But here are my favorites:

Paella at Palo Cortao, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Palo Cortao – I love everything about this restaurant. It is located inside the super cool Hotel Brummell, which means this is the perfect excuse to go inside to check it out. They have several seating areas; outside on the terrace, inside the hotel, and on their lovely patio in the back. Their food is an interesting fusion of southern Spanish and local, with cool wines to pair them with. They have a very good rice dish on their menu, and on Fridays they have a great lunch deal that always includes a rice dish, and it’s very much worth it.

Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 174 (Poble Sec).

Arosseria Xativa, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Arosseria Xátiva – Slightly off the beaten path, this restaurant (it has two locations, one in Gracia and one in Sants) focuses specifically on rices and paella.  There are so many different ones to choose from, so you can be sure there’s something to your liking. They’ve marked the menu for allergies, which is great if you prefer your meal gluten free. Plus you get a proper wooden spoon to eat with, as you should with a paella!

Torrent d’en Vidalet 26 and Borders 35 (Gracia and Sants).

Cruix, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Cruix – This restaurant is on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list, and it’s not hard to see why. The starters are magnificent (such as oysters in a Gilda sauce), and the main courses are four different rice dishes (one of them is vegan). You can’t go wrong here.

Carrer d’Entença, 57 (Eixample).

Cheriff – Local classic Cheriff has reopened after a major renovation, and is as good as ever. It is open every day.

Carrer Ginebra 15 (Barceloneta).

Can Solé – This restaurant is more than 120 years old, and they make excellent paellas, rices and fideuas. It’s very charming and the food is of great quality. A must visit. Read my review of Can Solé here.

San Carles 4 (Barceloneta).

Paella at Pez Vela, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Pez Vela – It might be touristy considering the location on the Barceloneta beach, but the food is tasty. I love the rices here. Catch a table on the terrace if you can, and enjoy the views of the beach and the sea.

Paseo del Mare Nostrum 19/21 (Barceloneta).

Abrassame – Up on the top floor of the Las Arenas shopping center you can find this restaurant that uses fresh ingredients and a good grill to make their dishes. Their paella is excellent. Read my review of Abrassame here.

Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes 373 (Plaça Espanya).

Terraza Martinez – The views are absolutely beautiful from this restaurant up on the Montjuïc hill, and the food is excellent.

Ctra. de Miramar 38 (Montjuïc).

Filigrana Restaurant, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Filigrana – I adore this friendly restaurant that uses top notch local ingredients in their kitchen. The staff is very skilled and friendly. Their lunch deal is unbeatable, and they specialize in rice dishes. Read my review here.

Carrer de Tarragona 99, Barcelona (Plaça Espanya).

Can Majó – A family owned business with many years of experience in the Barceloneta. They have a great terrace.

Almirall Aixada 23 (Barceloneta).

Camping Mar – The En Compañia de Lobos group has opened this surprising, very casual, and somewhat secret location by the sea. The rice dishes are recommended.

Passeig de Joan de Borbó 103 (Barceloneta).

Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Elche – This restaurant opened already in 1959, so they have plenty of experience, and put a lot of effort into making authentic rice dishes.

Vila i Vilà 71 (Poble Sec).

Xiringuito Escriba – This is a local’s favourite, right by the beach. The seafood here is also recommendable.

Avinguda del Litoral 62 (Poblenou).

La Barraca – A more modern take on a paella restaurant, with beautiful views over the sea.

Passeig Maritim Barceloneta 1 (Barceloneta).

Al Grano, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Al Grano – If you’re feeling lazy, and prefer to order a paella or a rice dish at home, then Al Grano is the way to go. We love this concept, where you get the whole paella dish, which you can return or keep if you want to make a paella at home. They have many different rice dishes to choose from, and they are very, very good.

La Mar Salada – It is not always easy to find good restaurants in this part of the city, but this place nails it with their good, fresh. ingredients.

Joan de Borbó 58-59 (Barceloneta).

7 Portes – This restaurant is quite a classic in Barcelona and is rather popular with tourists, but it is worth a visit. They have good private rooms here, perfect for groups. Many a famous person has visited this restaurant.

Pg Isabel II 14 (Barceloneta).

Hostal de Cabrils, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Outside Barcelona – There are numerous fantastic options for paella and rice dishes outside Barcelona, but I want to highlight the lovely gastro town of Cabrils (30 minutes from BCN). A good option for paella and rice dishes here are beautiful L’Hort and Hostal de Cabrils.

Looking for the absolute best paella in Barcelona? You’re in luck. Eat as the locals do at these must-try restaurants

Eating paella in Spain is a rite of passage. It is one of those things you simply have to do, like drinking Guinness in Dublin or eating pizza in Naples. Yes, there is a cliched element to it, but forget your cynicism and dig in. We all need more delicious food in our lives, and the best paella in Barcelona is just about as dictionary definition ‘delicious’ as it gets.

Paella has its origins in Valencia (a simple day trip down the coast), but you’ll find plenty of options in Barcelona if you’re looking to sample this most traditional of dishes. Of course, the people of Barcelona will argue that their rice dishes (found on menus as arròs, not paella) are better than the others, but we’ll let you be the judge of that.

Pioneers in Barcelona in the import of Valencian cuisine, Elche’s star dish is their black rice with squid and artichokes, bursting with sea delights, vegetables so fresh you can actually distinguish each one, and perfectly cut and cooked squid. The secret behind their very popular rice dishes is a base of Bayo Extra from the Ebro Delta, a hybrid between long-grain and bomba varieties that’s consistently flawless in texture and taste.

If what you’re craving is an authentic paella or rice dish in Barceloneta, this is the spot. Not only do they make some of the best in the city, but La Mar Salada also happens to be one of the top seafood restaurants in Barcelona. And it doesn’t get any fresher, as every morning they head out to reel in fresh fish to serve the same day. Their creative and respectful treatment of the products they use shows in their spectacular stews and paellas. We can especially recommend the ‘de senyoret’ rice with the catch of the day, and the black rice with cuttlefish and artichokes. Leave room for dessert here!

At 7 Portes they do a lot of things, all of them good, but some will be remembered with a special sentiment – try the amazing cod fritters that will still be tingling your taste buds between courses. When you’re ready for your paella, you have plenty of delectable options, but it might help you choose if you know that more than 70 percent of the clientele order their fantastic paella Parellada. The delectable rice comes with monkfish, mussels, squid, lobster, minced pork, ‘botifarra’ sausage and rabbit. Can Ros is another reason to head to Barceloneta for a meal, with its affordable set lunch menu and the à la carte menu boasting a special section for rice dishes, where you’ll find an outstanding rice with ‘capipota’ (calf’s head and foot) and prawns, and a melt-in-your-mouth rice with lobster. The black rice with cuttlefish and artichokes – artichokes are a good litmus test – was everything we’d hoped for and more. To whet our appetite we ordered squid croquettes, which arrived fried to perfection, resting on a lovely cushion of alioli (garlic mayonnaise) and tomato sauce. Simplicity, just what we were after.

We’re always happy to welcome another rice or paella restaurant to Barcelona, as they can only add to the great culinary panorama here; that is, as long as they’re done right. And El Noi d’Alcoi is just such a place. The name translates to ‘The Boy from Alcoi’, the latter a town in Valencia, which as we all know is the centre of the paella universe. Chef Oscar Juan cooks up bold paellas, brothy rice, and fantastic fideuàs (all are created for a minimum of two diners, so bring a friend). For dessert, try the ‘mel i mató’ (mató cheese with honey) for a classic finish.

We’re just about over the trend of naming restaurants and bars with the number on the street address, but once you’re inside number 130 on C/ Laforja, the quality cuisine takes over any silly peeves. We’re talking about dishes created with know-how that can disarm the most cynical or snobbish critic. A good example is in their rice dishes, like the delectable one with ‘espardenyes’. The best paella in Barcelona – Guide Barcelona TM

Walking around Barcelona you can find many restaurants with the sign “paella + sangria”. Catalan paella in Barcelona is one of the must-haves for a delicious trip. We do not recommend that you visit such establishments. Often in the city center near such places at the entrance there are barkers, trying in every possible way to lure passers-by inside.

As a rule, under the guise of a gourmet Spanish dish, you will be served paella from a package that can be purchased at the supermarket for a couple of euros. This paella must be defrosted before cooking. Sangria is about the same quality, the cheapest. But the prices are usually much higher than in places where they make real paella.

Let’s take a look at some of Barcelona’s paella restaurants.

1Paella variety in Barcelona is Castell de Xativa

This restaurant is famous for its rice and seafood dishes. Many varieties of paella are prepared here:

    • “Mar y montaña” or paella mixta is a classic version of paella with seafood and meat
    • Paella de pollo is Catalan paella with chicken and paella de marisco is seafood

You can also try black rice – arroz negro.

    Key points about the restaurant:

    1. This Barcelona restaurant has no beauty in design, so don’t expect too much luxury.
    2. Locals often come here with their whole families just to have a hearty meal.
    3. The service here is high quality and fast.
    4. We recommend paella with sangria or red wine.
    5. Paella can be ordered for one or more people. Only the price and size of the pan will change.

If you don’t like rice, you can always order another popular dish. For example, fideua (fideua). His recipe is very similar to paella, only vermicelli is used instead of rice.

    Fideua

The average bill for one person is 20 €.
Schedule : The restaurant is closed on Mondays and Sunday evenings. Sunday open from 13:00 to 16:00. From Tuesday to Saturday – from 13-00 to 16-00 and from 20-30 to 23-30.

    2Can Solé

Probably the best paella in Barcelona here. For more than 110 years, local cuisine has been prepared here according to traditional Catalan recipes. The place is very colorful and atmospheric. Authentic interior without pretense. But excellent cuisine and a homely atmosphere – this cannot be taken away. Be sure to try the lobster paella and seafood fideua.

Important: the seafood at Can Sole is always fresh, nothing frozen!

Otherwise, locals who know a lot about them would hardly have chosen this restaurant as one of the best in the city and were its main guests.

The average bill per person is 30 €.
Working hours : Tue-Sat – from 13-00 to 16-00 and from 20-00 to 23-00. Sun – from 13-00 to 16-00. Closed on Mondays and Sunday evenings.

7Cheriff – not Catalan paella, but also delicious

This is an old Barcelona restaurant whose main dish is lobster rice (arroz caldoso con bogavante). It’s not exactly what you would call a Catalan paella, but you won’t regret trying the dish. The Sheriff is a family restaurant that is always noisy and fun.

Owner Cheriff is the daughter of the sheriff of Barcelona and has been preparing meals for patrons for over 30 years.

Also don’t forget to try the local tapas, they are very tasty here.
