While it’s not at all unusual for a bank to be open for at least a few hours on Saturdays, most are still closed on Sundays.
It usually makes sense for a bank to close its doors on Sundays for a few reasons: it’s traditionally a day that many businesses close in the U.S., it gives employees a day off and the stock market is closed on the weekend. However, for some customers, especially those who work during the weekdays, it would be more convenient to visit a bank branch on the weekend.
That’s why some banks may have limited hours on Sundays. Still, it’s typically only a select few branches that are open on Sunday, or they might be banks located inside of a grocery store or retailer. Here are six banks where you might find a local branch with Sunday hours.
American Savings Bank
American Savings Bank was founded in 1925 and is based in Hawaii. It provides a full suite of banking products and services, including deposit accounts, loans, insurance and investments. It’s also certified as an equal housing lender.
Of its 37 branch locations, eight are open on Sundays. All are located in Hawaii and are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Most of its branches are also open on Saturday.
Apple Bank
New York-based Apple Bank has been around since the mid-1800s and has over 80 branches throughout the New York City area. It offers a variety of banking products, which can be opened online or at a branch.
Some of the bank’s branches are open on Sundays with typical Sunday hours being 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There’s also a customer service phone line that can be reached on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Chase Bank
The largest bank in the U.S. by assets, Chase Bank has branches nationwide — almost 5,000 in total — as well as a large ATM footprint. It offers most types of banking products and services.
While most of its branches are closed on Sundays, there are a few with limited Sunday hours. Note that branches open on Sunday may be closed on Saturdays in lieu. Find your local Chase branch hours with the bank’s branch locator.
Fifth Third Bank
Fifth Third Bank is a large regional bank with locations throughout the Midwest and Southeast. U.S. Customers also get fee-free access to over 50,000 ATMs. Fifth Third is headquartered in Ohio, and the largest portion of its branches are located in the state.
Some of Fifth Third Bank’s brick-and-mortar locations, called Bank Marts, are inside malls or other retailers. While none of its standalone branches are open on Sundays, some of the Bank Marts do have limited Sunday hours. The bank’s website offers a branch locator with all hours posted.
TD Bank
TD Bank has over 1,000 branches along the Eastern coast of the U.S. The bank offers a range of products and services, including bank accounts, credit cards, home loans and investments.
With extended hours on the weekdays and limited hours on Sundays at many of its branches, TD Bank is a convenient option for those who can’t go to a bank during typical working hours. TD Bank’s Sunday hours are usually from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The bank also has a unique option for lost card emergencies: debit card curbside pickup. This service allows customers to order a replacement debit card in the event that it’s lost and pick it up outside of a nearby branch location the same day or next day.
Valley National Bank
Valley National Bank is regional to New Jersey, New York, Florida, Alabama, California and Illinois, with its headquarters (and most of its branches) in New Jersey. It has over 200 branches, plus it offers online and mobile banking tools.
Some of Valley National Bank’s branches are open on Sundays, with typical Sunday hours being from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. While some branches are open seven days a week, others close on Saturday instead of Sunday. Use the bank’s locator to find hours of operation for your local branch.

What is open on Sundays in Germany
Most German organizations are closed on Sundays and public holidays. The same rule applies to shops. Despite the existing opinion, some stores are open on Sundays in Germany.
See also: Sunday in Germany: what is forbidden to do on this day.
But shops are not the only ones that can open on Sunday. The same rule applies to gas stations, shops at railway stations or airports, part of cultural and entertainment events: museums, SPA, sports grounds.
- Shops and malls . On Sundays, you will not be able to go to shopping centers, buy clothes or cosmetics. To buy something important and urgent, you can go to the shops at the railway stations (Dm or Rossmann).
- Restaurants, cafes and bars . Most of the restaurants are open on Sundays, as is the delivery service. Therefore, you can order food at home. In fact, it is cafes and restaurants that are visited the most on Sunday.
- Bakeries . Most often, such establishments work in the morning or until noon.
If it is both a bakery and a cafe, then the period of work may be longer.
- Filling stations . Throughout Germany, they operate around the clock. Here you can go to the store and buy essential goods. Here you can have a sandwich or buy a ready-made semi-finished product to take home.
- Kiosks . There are a large number of small stalls where you can buy delicious coffee, newspaper or cigarettes.
- Flower shops . Surprisingly, flower shops are open on Sundays.
- Sports halls . To work out, you can visit the gym. There are also individual and group lessons.
- Pools and water activities . On Sunday you can go swimming, visit spa treatments and many other water activities.
- Museums . Most museums are open on Sundays, and Mondays are days off.
- Cinemas . A great day to go on your own day off. As a rule, a session on this day costs more.
- Flea markets . You can find a lot of interesting things in this market. At least one of these markets operates in large cities.
- Tourist attractions . Most of these attractions are open. Sunday is the most popular day for excursions. Therefore, you can visit castles, palaces or ancient churches.
- Pharmacies . The following pharmacies are open on Sundays in Germany: Dm, Apotheke and Rossmann.
- Public transport . And although the number of flights is reduced on this day, all types of transport continue to run. How often depends on the population.
Living in the capital, everyone can find great opportunities for shopping on Sunday. There is at least 1 pharmacy and a grocery store in any city. But most likely the time of work will be reduced. Some enterprises do not work longer than 3 o’clock in the afternoon.

When and what works in European countries?
Workdays in every European country are arranged in their own way: somewhere shops and establishments ignore Sundays, somewhere they close early or for a siesta. But in travel time management, all this should definitely be taken into account so as not to hang around the thresholds of closed doors. When is the best time to go grocery shopping in Spain, try to get to a bank in Germany or go shopping in Poland – we understand the work schedules of various institutions in Europe.
Sweden
A normal business day is Monday to Friday from 8:30 or 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. An hour-long lunch behaves differently: it can happen between 11:30 and 13:30. This applies, for example, to banks or the post office. There are no laws in Sweden that regulate the opening hours of shops, but you cannot continue trading from midnight to 5:00 in the morning. Shopping malls and large grocery stores are usually open daily. Grocery – until 22:00 all week, and shopping malls – until 20:00 on weekdays and until 18:00 on weekends.
Restrictions apply only to national Systembolaget stores where alcohol is sold. On weekdays, they close no later than 20:00, and on Saturdays – at 15:00. On Sundays, alcohol is not sold at all – for a glass you will have to take a walk to the restaurant.
Denmark
Most establishments in Denmark are open from 8:00 (or 8:30) to 17:30. Shops are allowed to open every day and around the clock, except for some public holidays like New Year or Christmas. But entrepreneurs with small turnover can be open even then. In small towns, trade stops on Saturday after 14:00 and continues to hibernate on Sunday. Small shops may be closed on Monday.
Finland
Working hours in Finland follow Eurozone standards. From Monday to Friday, offices are open from 8:00 to 17:00, and lunch lasts an hour or two between 11:00 and 14:00. Stores set their own hours of operation. Usually the schedule does not go beyond the borders from 7:00 to 21:00 on weekdays, from 7:00 to 18:00 on Saturday and on Sunday – from 12:00 to 18:00. Large hypermarkets (like Prisma, City Market, K-Market or S-Market) in Helsinki, Espoo or Vantaa are open until 23:00 on weekdays and until 21:00 on weekends. Around the clock (or in the mode of 6:00-24:00) there are shops at gas stations.
Iceland
Opening hours in Iceland are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, while during the summer months they start and end earlier from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. For shops from Monday to Thursday, the usual working hours are from 10:00 to 18:30. On Friday they are open for an hour longer (until 19:30), and on Saturday they close at 18:00. On Sunday you can go to large supermarkets (for example, Bonus), but their opening hours are quite short: they are open from 12:00 to 18:00.
Austria
In Austria, everything is closed during public holidays, which are often dictated by the Catholic religious calendar. As usual, shops can be open from 6:00 to 21:00 on weekdays, and on Saturday until 18:00. Under the rules that the country’s authorities established in 2003, trade is limited to 72 working hours per week. Bakeries can start work half an hour earlier than other establishments and open at 5:30 in the morning. Shops are closed on Sundays, but in tourist places (train stations, airports) this rule is not particularly strict – many outlets are open.
Germany
.00) with an hour break for lunch. For stores in Germany, a special law was developed – Ladenschlussgesetz, but it remained relevant only for some lands – Bavaria and Saar. There, work begins no earlier than 6:00 and ends no later than 20:00, they do not start at all on Sundays and public holidays. Otherwise, with the permission of the government, trading hours are regulated in each of the 16 regions by their own laws.
There are exceptions throughout the country: shops at gas stations, railway stations and airports. They may remain open outside normal hours.
The Netherlands
Opening hours in the Netherlands are set by the institutions themselves. Typically, stores fit into the framework from 10:00 to 20:00, but not without reservations. On Monday they open later and work from 11:00 to 18:00, from Tuesday to Friday from 09:30 to 18:00, and on Saturday from 09:30 to 17:00. On Sunday, shops are open in the central areas of large cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Almere, Leiden) or small but touristic places from 12:00 to 18:00. In other cities, shops are open every first Sunday of the month.
Supermarkets (eg Albert Heijn, IKEA and others) remain open until 22:00 from Monday to Saturday. Often in Dutch cities there is a weekly shopping evening (koopavond), on Thursday or Friday, when shops are open until 21:00. In many cities there are several shops that are open until late in the evening or all night (avondwinkels).
France
Working hours in France from Monday to Friday starts at 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning and lasts until 18:00 with a break from approximately 12:00 to 14:00. The schedule depends on the place: in Paris and other large cities, they don’t like a long lunch break. And they don’t like to work overtime anywhere in France at all, which also fixes local labor legislation.
Retail shops are open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 20:00. Larger stores tend to be open longer on Thursdays, such as Galeries Lafayette in Paris, from 9:30 am to 9:00 pm. But on other days they close an hour earlier. On Sundays, trade stops, and in small towns – sometimes on Saturdays.
French banks work in a similar way: on Saturdays they start business later, but finish earlier and do not work at all on Sundays.
United Kingdom
Usually small private shops in the UK are open daily. Large supermarkets are open around the clock, except Sundays in England and Wales. Common weekend for all – Easter Sunday, New Year or Christmas. Standard schedule from Monday to Saturday: work from 9:00 to 17:30 or from 10:00 to 20:00. Sunday shopping is getting more and more popular, so there are glimpses in the schedules. Large shops (over 280 square meters) in England and Wales are allowed to trade on the last weekend for six hours. Therefore, if they are open, they work either from 10:00 to 16:00, or from 11:00 to 17:00, or from 12:00 to 18:00.
In Northern Ireland, business hours on Sundays are from 13:00 to 18:00. In Scotland, it is generally considered the same day as any other: there are no restrictions. Since the beginning of 2018, a campaign has been launched in Poland, as a result of which trading on Sunday will gradually cease. The ban is introduced in stages over two years: from March 1, 2018, large stores and shopping centers will work only on the first and last Sunday of the month, from January 1, 2019 – only on the last, and from January 1, 2020, a complete ban will come. Exceptions will be the two weeks before the Christmas holidays, the Sunday before Easter and the last Sunday of January, April, June and August.
The innovation will bypass small shops where the owners themselves work: they will set the work schedule themselves. Farmers’ markets, bakeries, pastry and ice cream shops, flower shops and funeral centers will be subject to the same relief. In addition, shops at train stations, airports and gas stations will continue to be open on Sunday.
