Barcelona Never Sleeps: From Tapas to ‘Aftas’

Vibrant by day and even more so after dark, Barcelona’s long been renowned for its thriving nightlife. Classy bars, rustic tapas joints and underground after parties provide for hours of authentic, Spanish amusement. Barcelona’s nightlife can best be summed as “randomly eclectic,” as it’s a city in which the best-laid plan is not to have one at all. The most exciting nights are the ones where you find yourself stumbling from bar to bar in any given neighborhood and, in typical Spanish fashion, going with the flow. If you feel like spending the night bouncing around in the same neighborhood, Jamboree and Café Royal are rustic and classy (respectively) and centered in the always bustling Plaza Reial right off La Rambla. Craving top 40? Head to the Eixample and dance until the sun comes up at Hyde Club or if you’re in the mood to walk along the beach and chill at an outdoor patio while listening to House music, then CDLC or Opium Mar are ideal late night options.

And don’t forget to check out Gracia neighborhood, a very local, Catalan part of town with trendy bars and clubs, this area is always bopping, every night of the week especially on Calle Verdi which is the main street in the Barrio.

Indie rock with the occasional live music gig, Sidecar is sheer late night fun. You can’t get more central than Plaza Reial and this hip, unpretentious two-storey space (restaurant and bar upstairs, club downstairs) is a great way to dance until the sun comes up. Sidecar is pure fun. Whether you’re in flip flops, stilettos, a mini skirt or even a bathing suit, there are no restrictions when it comes to this late night disco. Unless you’re eating in the restaurant where its best to come dressed more ‘conservatively’, Sidecar is unpretentious, relaxed and intimate. It’s a nice way to listen to indie music in the city center.

It’s a live music venue before 12, but once the clock strikes midnight Jamboree transforms into a raging nightclub playing plenty of 80’s and 90’s rock. Centrally located in Plaza Reial Jamboree’s a guaranteed good time. And if you feel like switching up the scene, walk across the plaza to one of the many other clubs and bars open until 6am or 7am. Jamboree is a great mix between a live music locale and a late night disco. It’s tons of fun and located in one of the most electric Plazas in the city, Plaza Reial. When you’re finished in the club, watch the sunrise amongst the palm trees.

With two floors playing completely different music nightly, you can feel like you’re attending separate clubs at this trendy Barcelona venue. Rock out to heavy metal upstairs and then dance to minimal house on the main floor. BeCool often features well known DJ’s so be sure to check the website for upcoming artists and shows. This is a ‘nicer’ club in Sarria, one of the outer lying neighborhoods in Barcelona. Frequented by Catalan locals, hipsters and expats who love music, BeCool is a great way to spend an evening with good people, great music and a variety of drink options.

It’s worth the line up if you’re in the mood for top 40 hits. Located in the slightly more elegant, Eixample neighborhood, Hyde is a small, unassuming nightclub with a young university crowd. If you’re looking for a great night on the town, this is always a sure bet. Although it’s mostly populated with a younger crowd, Hyde Club still attracts the mid 30’s and early 40’s crowd as well. It has a great mix of people and is an incredibly fun night on the town. Located in the Eixample area, you’re surrounded by other bars and clubs so if you get sick of this one you can easily stroll to the next.

A Barcelona staple, Macarena Club has been around for years and to locals and tourists alike it is a late night gem. But be sure to arrive early (by 1:30am) as the club is tiny and once it reaches capacity, the doors shut. If you’re looking for a mix of house and electronic beats this is the place to go. Centrally located in the Gothic Quarter, it’s easy to find and easier to stumble home from, especially if you’re staying downtown. This is a sure bet for night-caps, if you feel like staying on your feet until the sun comes up.

Six Euros buys you admission and a drink to one of the liveliest clubs in Barcelona. The downstairs space is divided into two areas; one for the bar and a separate dancing room directly adjacent to it. If you’re looking for a mix of 50’s, 60’s, 70’s 80’s and 90’s tunes, this is the place to be! Magic is one of Barcelona’s funnest clubs. Located in the Born neighborhood just on the edge before hitting Ciutadela Park, this club is always busy especially on Friday nights. Relatively new to the Barcelona Club scene, Marula is a vibrant space, ideal for hosting concerts, live music and parties. It specializes in funk, but features rock, pop, jazz and other genres as well. Centrally located in the Gothic Quarter, right off of Plaza Tripi and La Rambla, this is a great late night party especially on weekends. Be sure to check their line up for well-known DJ’s and star line ups as they have special guests and featured artists all year-round. It’s best to get on the guest list, especially on the weekends when lines can extend into the plaza.

Ladies throw on the heels and guys switch up the board shorts for trousers, if you want to get past the bouncers at Opium Mar. Overlooking the beach and located next to the elegant Hotel Arts, Opium is one of the hottest nightclubs in town, acting as a restaurant, bar, lounge and club all in one. If you plan on hitting the town for the night, go for dinner at Opium and then stay and watch as the restaurant slowly transforms itself into party central just a little after 12am (while avoiding the lines outside).   AMAZING!

  This was the best thing I did in Barcelona! The wait in the line outside was 100% worth it. The directions were so clear; you got a passport book and a stamp. You stamped the kind of liquor (or none) and the flavor you want and they surprised you with your drink. The presentation was immaculate; my drink came to me on a train while on fire!

  A unique experience. Lovely staff and the owner is really friendly and helpful. This is a must visit for those coming to Barcelona looking for cocktails and a really interesting experience and lively atmosphere. We were treated to a magician who came to our table to perform and it was fabulous. Cocktails were really great. Would come again if back in Barcelona.

  The cocktails were fantastic. I asked for recommendations from one of the barmen and they were on point. Whether strong, bitter, sweet, sour or specific alcohols like gin, whiskey or cognac they were able to come up with something that suited that suited my tastes. I didn’t eat anything, but the “Speedy Gonzales” came with pecorino Sardo, which is frankly the best pecorino (fight me, Romans). I never had a cocktail with cheese, but I’ve been converted to super savoury cocktails.

  Service was top quality. I gave them my preferences and they delivered. I couldn’t ask for more.

  Atmosphere was great, we felt cosy welcomed. The style is what drew us in first. Maybe the cocktails weren’t as “Instagramable” as other but they had excellent flavour and execution.

  Prices were standard—but for the quality, you would be lucky to pay less. The pure selection of drinks was amazing. Couldn’t recommend more highly for a drop in or your local in Barcelona.

  Best Bar in Barcelona

  This is my favorite bar in Barcelona. Last year my family wandered into the bar by chance and ended up having to much fun. We returned again this year because we had such a great time when we first went. The drinks are out of the ordinary and they are always creating new drinks. The staff is super friendly and engaging. I would 100% recommend!

  After an exhausting promenade under the baking sun along the Ramblas, I specially brought my companions to this institution. And we did not regret it. At least it’s cool and there are free places we found ourselves. We went into this place somewhere before 14-00 and immediately found ourselves in the fabulous peaceful atmosphere of the fairy forest. The older generation reinforced their strength with coffee, but the young with chilled cola. you are in a fantasy world, far from the hustle and bustle of a big city. Why not 5 stars? The menu could be adjusted to the atmosphere of the establishment. music..and El Bosc de les Fades would turn into a real adventure and a must visit place when you are in Barcelona.
  PS. Prices, at least for drinks, are reasonable.

  They say that they never stopped preparing cocktails using the frowling method. Massive counter, adult bartenders. You can drink a couple of cocktails. The price tag is quite high, frankly, but what is not. For the atmosphere) from the outside, the institution is almost unremarkable, although it is located a stone’s throw from the very entrance street of Barcelona.

  Great live music in the Gothic Quarter

  Listened to Cuban music performed by Ray Cuza & Septeto Sazonando de Cuba. I liked it very much. The cost depends on the specific program. We had 10 euros per person. Tickets can be booked in advance and redeemed on the spot half an hour before the start (or just bought at the entrance), but it’s better to come early to have time to take a seat (seating at the tables right in front of the stage is in short supply + there are several bar seats). The club is small, the stage is in the depths, there is a bar at the entrance, but it is impossible to listen to music there, as it is blocked by the hum of voices. The only downside is the lack of ventilation. After an hour and a half, there were so many people that there was simply nothing to breathe near the stage, and we had to leave the concert a little earlier than we wanted. But the “hot” Cuban atmosphere was fully felt:)))

Barcelona nightlife

In Barcelona, ​​you will quickly realize that this is a city that never sleeps. Spaniards eat late, drink late and go out late. Don’t be surprised if on weekends until 01:00 – 02:00 at night the clubs are still almost empty, and they will work until 06:00. It’s good to have a siesta!

Barcelona’s nightlife goes hand in hand with the city itself – it’s trendy, varied and sometimes great. If you are at heart and not a club person, it is still worth going to at least one nightclub to see what’s what.
