Money Advice
Before you travel to Barcelona we recommend that you have a number of means of payment and ensure that your money and goods are protected by a quality travel insurance policy.
We advise bringing travellers cheques, credit cards and about 2 days worth of Euros.
It’s important to keep your different means of payment in separate locations on your person. Carry only the amount of money that you’ll use in that day.
Barcelona has a petty theft problem and if your are unfortunate enough to have your bag or wallet stolen you’ll need to have a back up means of payment to safeguard you.
Spanish auto banks will enable anyone with a visa-based card to withdraw cash from their home account. You can also withdraw cash using most switch cards.
Credit cards, including AMEX, are widely accepted in most of the high streets shops, restaurants and hotels. However many smaller restaurants and hostals still do not have credit card payment facilities.
Tipping
Tipping is not a requirement. However if you had good service a 5% to 10% tip would be considered polite.

Currency
The euro (€) is the single European currency. Exchange rates of participating countries are locked into the common currency, fluctuating against the dollar. Unfortunately for U.K and U.S. visitors, in the last couple of years the euro has gone from basically a one-to-one exchange rate with the dollar to a much stronger position.
Spain is no longer a budget destination and Barcelona itself is often quoted as being the most expensive city in the country. Compared to other major European cities such as London or Paris, however, it can still be a bargain, but if you’re not used to big-city prices, you could have a bit of shock.
Reflecting a modern, cosmopolitan city that has to cater to all budgets, you can go up- or down-market in your choice of dining and accommodations. Often the most memorable experience is not dependent on the price tag. Staying away from the tourist traps and seeking out family-run restaurants will make you inclined to hand over your credit card with a smile when the check comes. In a climate of stiff competition (especially from the holiday apartment sector), hotels are usually clean and comfortable. Trains are very reasonably priced, fast, and on time, and most service personnel treat you with respect. And once you move beyond Barcelona into the rural areas you will find that the price of hotels and restaurants drops noticeably.
In Spain, prices for children aged 6 to 17 are often lower than for adults. Entrance fees for children under 6 are generally waived.
This guide lists exact prices in the local currency. However, rates fluctuate, so before departing consult a currency-exchange website such as www.
xe.com/ucc or www.oanda.com/convert/classic to check up-to-the-minute rates.
Exchange rates may be more favorable when you arrive in Barcelona but it’s helpful to have at least some money in local currency when you get there. Currency and traveler’s checks can be changed at all the local airports.
When you get to Barcelona, it’s best to exchange currency or traveler’s checks at a bank, not a cambio (exchange bureau), hotel, or shop as rates and commission fees are high. Most Barcelona hotels accept major credit and debit cards.
ATMs
The easiest and best way to get cash while away from home is from ATMs (automated teller machines), also called “cashpoints.”
Maestro (www.mastercard.com) and Visa (www.visa.com) both have credit card networks spanning the globe; look on the back of your bank card to see which network you’re on and check online for ATM locations in Barcelona. Be sure you know your PIN and daily withdrawal limit before you depart.
Most banks impose a fee every time you use a card at another bank’s ATM, and that fee is higher for international transactions than for domestic ones. In addition, the bank from which you withdraw cash may charge its own fee. For international withdrawal fees, ask your bank.
Credit Cards
Credit cards are the safest way to carry money. They provide a record of all your expenses, and offer relatively good exchange rates. You can get cash advances on your credit cards at banks or ATMs, provided you know your PIN. You’ll pay interest from the moment of withdrawal, even if you pay your monthly bill on time.
Check with your credit or debit card issuer to see what fees will be charged for overseas transactions. Recent reform legislation in the U.S., for example, has curbed some exploitative lending practices. But many banks have responded by increasing fees in other areas, including fees for customers who use credit and debit cards while out of the country. Fees can amount to 3% or more of the purchase price.
Check before departing to avoid any surprise charges on your statement.
American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, and Visa credit cards are all widely accepted in Spain.
Traveler’s Checks
Traveler’s checks are not now widely used but are accepted in Barcelona at banks and travel agencies. Buy them from your bank before you leave home.
They are offered in various denominations, and you’ll pay a service charge of between 1% and 4%.
American Express, MasterCard, Thomas Cook, and Visa offer foreign currency traveler’s checks, which are useful if you’re traveling to the euro zone; they’re accepted at locations where dollar checks are not.
If you carry traveler’s checks, keep a record of their serial numbers separate from your checks in the event that these are stolen or lost. You’ll get a refund faster if you know the numbers.

Travel money
Before you go to Barcelona, we advise you to get several means of payment and be sure to insure your money and things.
We advise you to take traveler’s checks, plastic cards and a two-day supply of cash in euros.
Important to store different means of payment separately from each other. Carry the minimum amount of funds for one day.
There is a problem of petty theft in Barcelona, and if you are unlucky and your bag or wallet is stolen, you will need a spare means of payment.
ATMs in Spain allow you to withdraw money from any Visa card. Money can also be withdrawn from almost any Switch debit card.
Credit cards such as AMEX are accepted in most expensive shops, restaurants and hotels. However, most small restaurants and hostals still do not accept credit cards.
Tipping
Tipping is not required. However, if you have been well served, it is good practice to leave a tip of 5% – 10% of the bill.

Money in Spain: from A to Z
Money in Spain is represented by different currencies, but the main one is the euro. At the legislative level, it is allowed to bring into Spain up to 10,000 euros in cash. The rest of the money must be declared. Exceptions are money on plastic cards and funds on traveller’s checks.
Cash in Spain
It is better to exchange money before traveling to Spain. Here, banks take part of the amount as a commission, they are available only until 14:00, and on Saturdays – until 12:00. At the money exchange points, the exchange rate is very high; rubles are not accepted everywhere. And in connection with the latest situation, it is better to come to Spain immediately with the euro.
The best denomination for use in Spain is up to 100 euros.
In other cases, as a rule, problems arise.

Use of travelers checks in Spain
Most of the hotels in Spain accept travelers checks as payment (it is recommended to check the possibility on the hotel’s official website). To receive cash from the account, they are suitable:
- banks (there is a commission)
- Spanish department stores “El cort inglés” (there is a commission)
- points American express (no commission)
Money on plastic cards
You can use plastic cards in Spain to solve almost all problems. They are accepted not only in hotels, cafes and restaurants, but even at gas stations and shops.
In Spain, you will have to pay with cash in small shops owned by people from China, India and the Middle East, who sell the essentials until late at night and seven days a week. This is due to the lack of cash registers.
Spain accepts credit or debit cards from banks around the world, regardless of the format:
- Visa
- Visa Electron
- MasterCard
- Maestro
If the card has a chip and requires a pin code, then in most cases no documents are required.
They do not refuse service to cards without a chip and a pin code, but sometimes it is required to present documents.
If the currency in Spain is very necessary, but there are difficulties with reading the card by the terminal, you should ask for the card number to be entered in a special program.

Sometimes in shops or restaurants in Spain there may be problems with accepting plastic cards. Some cash in Spain will help you avoid difficulties.
How to withdraw money in Spain using an ATM
Currency in Spain
Withdrawing cash from a Russian card at ATMs in Spain is an overhead procedure due to interest for the service. The standard fee is 1%, but there is a minimum transaction amount. This is a regular practice when performing transactions with money in the vast majority of countries.
ATMs (Telebanco) have a cash withdrawal limit of 300 euros at a time. If you need a large amount of money in Spain, you will have to use an ATM repeatedly during the day.
It’s frustrating that you have to pay a commission every time.

How banks work in Spain
The standard banking day ends at 14:00. Saturdays – at 12:00. Sunday is a day off. On this day, it will not be possible to conduct transactions with money with the help of banks. Therefore, the currency in Spain must be withdrawn in advance.
