armchair Barcelona Mies van der Rohe • Interior+Design

    Items

“A chair is a very complex object. Building a skyscraper is much easier,” said American architect Mies van der Rohe, creator of the Barcelona chair. In this subject, he embodied his two main principles: “God is in the details” and “Less is more.”

In 2019, the Barcelona chair celebrates its 90th anniversary. One of the outstanding examples of modernism has been in production for more than 80 years, and has hardly changed since its inception. Initially, the steel frame was connected with screws, but in 19In the 1950s, Mies van der Rohe improved this design and made it monolithic.

    Architect Mies van der Rohe.

All the achievements of Mies van der Rohe are intertwined in this chair: his style has always been characterized by simplicity, which he has raised to a cult. In his architecture, he always used materials contemporary to him (steel and glass), and compared them to the “skin and bones” of architecture.

German Pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe for International Exhibition 1929 years in Barcelona.

The armchair was created in 1929 for the German pavilion at the International Exhibition in Barcelona. Germany was just recovering from the First World War, and the commissioner of the German pavilion, Georg von Schnitzel, invited the American architect and his colleague Lilly Reich to “give voice to the spirit of the new time.” It was known that the Spanish King Alfonso XIII and his wife would visit the pavilion. Mies van der Rohe decided to create new modernist thrones for the royal family.

    Chair metal frame. Fragment.

“The king himself must be at the opening. So, the chairs had to be truly monumental. In such circumstances, you cannot use an ordinary seat, ”the architect recalled when work on this item began.

The crossed legs of the chair are a reference to the thrones of the Egyptian pharaohs.

Pillows were sewn from 148 pieces of leather. Most likely, such a connection was invented by Lilly Reich, a student of Josef Hoffmann and a brilliant textile designer.

One of the recent convincing versions: the authorship of the chair should be divided between Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, his friend and colleague, if not give the palm to the idea of Reich herself, as is the case with some other items designed by van der Rohe.

It is known that the royal couple did not sit down on the chairs intended for them. For the first time, the Barcelona model, as a home piece of furniture, appeared at the Tugendhat villa built by Mies van der Rohe in Czech Brno (19thirty).

Barcelona Armchair at Villa Tugendhat designed by Mies van der Rohe in Brno in 1930.

In 1948, after the death of Lilly Reich, Mies van der Rohe transfers the rights to manufacture the chair to Knoll. It was at that moment that the design underwent changes (the detachable parts were replaced with a monolithic structure).
