CRAZY ABOUT METRO

Card types | Metro de Madrid

To travel on Metro de Madrid you need a Public Transport Card (TTP) loaded with a valid ticket type for the journey you wish to make. More information about Tickets to travel with Metro and Cards/tickets to enter/exit Aeropuerto stations.

  • Multi card

  • Personal card (TTP)

  • Children’s card

  • Blue Card

  • Compatibility of the different ticket types

Multi card

The Multi card is a multi-personal, reloadable, contactless public transport card which is valid for ten years that can be used in conjunction with different types of tickets.

To benefit from the discounts for large families or people with a recognised level of disability equal to or greater than 65%.the user must have a Personal Public Transport Card (TTP).

Where can you get it?

The Multi card can be purchased at:

  • Metro de Madrid and Metro Ligero ticket machines.

  • Tobacconist’s and other authorised points of sale.

Multi Public Transport Cards can be purchased along with the ticket. Cards may also be purchased separately without adding a ticket.

The price of a Multi card is €2.50. For cards purchased along with a Tourist Ticket, the price of the card is included in the sale price of the ticket itself.

What tickets can be loaded?

The following tickets can be loaded:

  • Single Ticket valid for Metro, TFM, Metro Ligero 1 and Metro Ligero Oeste.
  • 10-Journey Ticket valid for Metro, TFM, Metro Ligero 1, Metro Ligero Oeste and city and intercity buses.
  • Airport Extra Charge, required to enter or exit the Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 or Aeropuerto T4 Stations when travelling on a Single or 10-Journey Ticket.
  • Tourist Tickets.

Single Tickets and Airport Extra Charges, once loaded onto any card, must be used on the day of purchase and are considered valid until the end of service, not the end of the calendar day. If you attempt to use it the day after it was purchased, the turnstile readers don’t accept it because it has expired.

Tickets that cannot be loaded onto a Multi card:

  • 30-Day Season Ticket
  • Annual Season Ticket

For these ticket types, the user must be in possession of a Personal Public Transport Card.

How does it work?

To use the card, you must purchase a ticket that is valid for the journey you wish to make. It must be validated by the readers on the operator’s equipment. One journey is deducted for each validation and the remaining journey balance appears on the screen of the validation equipment for Single Tickets and 10-Journey Tickets. For Tourist Tickets, when the expiration date is approaching this information appears on the screen.

The card can be consecutively validated as many times as there are passengers using the service with the same card, as long as they begin and end their journey together. The card supports up to three different ticket types, allowing users to make different types of journeys. For example: Single MetroSur + Metrobús + 10-Journey on MetroNorte.

There are some rules for loading the different ticket types, as not all of them are compatible with one another. More information on the compatibility of the different tickets.

Large families and persons with disabilities of 65% or more

Because it is non-personal, the Multi card cannot be used to receive the discounts for large families and people with a recognised level of disability equal to or greater than 65%.These users must have a Personal Public Transport Card in order to receive the available discounts.

Balance inquiry

The balance available on public transport cards can be checked through Metro de Madrid’s official app, by using the ticket machines in the underground, Cercanías (suburban rail) stations, transport interchange stations, authorised tobacconist shops and at designated Bankia ATMs.

The turnstiles in Metro de Madrid stations inform passengers of the journeys available on single and 10-journey tickets at the time of validation. In the case of Tourist Tickets, the turnstiles will show for how long the ticket is valid when the expiry date is near.

Likewise, the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium has also developed a ‘Public Transport Card’ (‘Tarjeta Transporte Público’) app for checking the balance available on each ticket loaded on the card. More information.

Inspection control

All passengers, before starting their journey, must be in possession of a valid transport ticket for their intended journey, which must have been validated for that journey.

Throughout the journey, and until the user passes through the exit turnstile at the destination station, the passenger must keep the ticket and show it to any Metropolitan Railway agent or inspector of the Regional Transport Consortium upon request.

Passengers without a valid transport ticket are required to pay a surcharge of €80 for using the service or trying to use it without a ticket. This amount is reduced by half if paid on the spot or within 15 business days. Payments should be made to the Metropolitan Railway operator.

A passenger is considered to be without a valid ticket if, when asked by an agent of the Metropolitan Railway or an inspector of the Regional Transport Consortium to produce a ticket:

  • The passenger is unable to produce a ticket.
  • The passenger is unable to produce a ticket that covers or is compatible with the journey they are making or have just made.
  • The passenger produces a ticket that has not been properly validated for the journey they are making or have just made.

The general conditions for acquiring and using non-personal public transport cards can be consulted at: general terms and conditions.

Guarantees

The Multi Card has a two-year warranty during which the user is entitled to have defective cards replaced free of charge, provided that the damage is not due to misuse of the card.

The guarantee is managed by the Public Transport Card Management Office of the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium.

Personal card (TTP)

This is a personal, non-transferable card, which expires 10 years after its issue date and which can be used to load both personal and non-personal transport tickets. The card contains the cardholder’s name and photograph and the card identification number.

Large families and people with disabilities of 65% or more can receive a series of discounts on the tickets loaded onto this card.

In addition, large families are entitled to these discounts during the period of processing or renewal of official large family certificates. More information on compensation during this period.

Where can you get it?

Personal Transport Cards can be purchased online. Complete information on conditions, forms, fees and required documents, as well as timeframes to obtain them, are available at Personal card and Personal card (TTP)

There are also Public Transport Card Management Offices where you can apply for this card and get information about it. You must visit Personal card (TTP)

What tickets can be loaded?

The following tickets can be loaded:

  • 30-Day Season Ticket.
  • Annual Season Ticket.
  • Single Ticket valid on Metro, TFM, Metro Ligero 1 and Metro Ligero Oeste.
  • 10-Journey Ticket valid on Metro, TFM, Metro Ligero 1, Metro Ligero Oeste and city and intercity buses.

Single Tickets and Airport Extra Charges, once loaded onto any card, must be used on the day of purchase and are considered valid until the end of service, not the end of the calendar day. If you attempt to use it the day after it was purchased, the turnstile readers will not accept it because it has expired.

Tickets not compatible with the Personal Public Transport Card:

  • Tourist Tickets

In order to load this type of ticket you must have a Multi Public Transport Card.

How does it work?

To use the card, you must load a ticket that is valid for the journey you wish to make. It must be validated on the readers for the relevant rail service operator. The card supports up to three different ticket types, allowing users to make different types of journeys and to pay for their travelling companions provided that they begin and end the journey together.

If you have a valid season ticket for the fare zone you are in, this will be validated first, and then, if you touch in again with your card, a journey is be deducted from the tickets loaded (single or 10-journey ticket) valid for that station.

If the season ticket loaded onto the card is not valid for that fare zone, you are allowed to pass through the turnstiles providing you have a single or 10-journey ticket loaded valid for the relevant station, which will be deducted.

There are some rules for loading the different ticket types, as not all of them are compatible with one another. More information on the compatibility of the different tickets.

All you need to know about public transport in Valencia

Public transport in Valencia includes buses, trams and metro. From 1951 to 1976, there were also trolleybuses, but they were removed as an inconvenient and suboptimal mode of transport (in all of Spain, trolleybuses now operate in only one city: Castellón de la Plana). Buses run throughout the city, the metro does not enter the old center. Trams and metros are combined into a single network: the only difference is in the arrangement of the cars and in the fact that some of them run on the ground, others under it.

Valencia’s historical past and beautiful old town, luxurious Mediterranean beaches, modern architecture and futuristic sights attract more and more tourists to Valencia. According to statistics, the average tourist stays for 2-3 nights. I lived here for three months, studied every corner and told in a mini guide: What to see in Valencia in a couple of days.

Valencia Metro is one of the best in Spain. New air-conditioned carriages save you from the heat and take you even to the suburbs. Sights are often located at a great distance from each other, and the metro helps to quickly and comfortably cover kilometers.

Metro and trams have two different types of subscriptions: the old Bonometro and the new TuiN Card. You can buy a single ticket or a ticket for two trips. The cost of trips depends on the zone, there are four of them.

Valencia’s trams and metro are combined into one system: metro lines 1, 3 and 5, and tram lines 4 and 6.

Valencia metro tariff plan

In the metro, you can use special tickets that are valid only on the Metrovalencia network, or you can use unified passes that are valid on all public transport. Here I will talk about special metro tickets.

All Metrovalencia tickets have a validity period depending on the fare zone:

  • When traveling in zones 1 and 2, the ticket is valid for 90 minutes;
  • When driving in three zones – 120 minutes;
  • When traveling in 4 zones – 150 minutes.

During this time, you can change routes, change from tram to metro and vice versa.

This is the metro…and this is the tram

Tariffs for travel in the Valencia metro :

  1. Single ticket costs 1.5 € per zone; 2.1 € — for any two zones; €2.8 for three zones and €3.9 for all zones. This ticket is valid for only 2 hours from the date of purchase, so it is not worth buying it in advance.
  2. Round-trip ticket operates in the same way: the first trip must be completed within 2 hours from the time of purchase, and the second one must be completed no later than 23:59 on the same day. It costs a little less than a single ticket: 2. 9 € for one zone, 4 € for two zones, 5.3 € for three zones and 7.4 € for the entire network.
  3. Bonometro – 10 trip pass. Within one zone, a subscription costs 7.6 €, for any 2 zones – 11 €, for 3 zones – 14.7 €, and for all 4 zones – 21 €.
  4. TuiN Card is a new type of ticket introduced in 2019. Prices are better than in Bonometro: a trip within one zone costs 0.72 €, between two zones — 1.04 €, the third and fourth zones (except for the airport) are combined into one and cost only 1.4 €.

How the TuiN card works is as follows: the card needs to be topped up with 10 € or more, and then applied to the validator. When you enter the car, the cost of one trip for one zone (0.72 €) is debited from the card, and when you exit, an additional cost is debited if you have traveled more than one zone. The metro network is divided into 4 zones, and the tram completely belongs to one zone, so the card must be applied to the metro at each entrance and exit from the car, and in the tram – only at the entrance.

Unlike Bonometro, up to 60 passengers can travel with the TuiN card at the same time. Detailed instructions for the TuiN Card in English on the Metrovalencia website

Most discount cards are valid only for residents of Valencia with an ID. For tourists, there are only discounts for travel for children and pensioners:

  • Children under 10 years of age do not need a separate ticket if they are accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. Each adult can carry two children.
  • Pensioners are entitled to a 50% discount on single tickets, but only upon presentation of a personalized Mobilis card. You can get a personalized card at Metrovalencia offices.

Inside the subway car

At the first purchase, you need to pay for the Móbilis card: 1 € for cardboard, 2 € for plastic, 4 € for personalized plastic. Then this card can be topped up at your chosen Bonometro or TuiN Card tariff. At this moment, the advantages of the TuiN card become obvious: if TuiN needs to be topped up with 10 €, and the actual cost will be deducted from each trip, then Bonometro is always topped up for 10 trips at one fare. For example, if you need to go to the airport, then you buy 10 trips at the rate of zone D. After that, you can use the card within zone A, but the cost will be deducted as if you went to zone D.

You can buy a Móbilis card and top it up at sales points:

  • Terminals that are located at each metro station and accept cash and cards,
  • Cash desks that are not available at all stations,
  • Tobacco shops and press kiosks.

The price does not depend on the place of purchase, but shops and kiosks only accept cash.

Please note that there are two machines at the tram stop: one of them is for buying tickets and replenishing the card, the second is for validation. Before boarding the tram, you need to attach the card to the validator (except for single tickets, which are valid for 2 hours after purchase).

If the ticket is not validated, the fine for stowaways is 100 €.

In the three months of living in Valencia, I almost completely missed the metro network and trams. However, some sights (for example, the City of Arts and Sciences) are too far from the tram stop, so sometimes you can’t do without buses.

Bus transportation in Valencia is carried out by EMT Valencia. The buses are all new, in good condition, with air conditioning and stop announcements. The route network is much more extensive than the subway. For example, in the old city this is the only mode of transport, not counting the taxi.

Types of bus tickets:

  • Single ticket: €1.50
  • Bonobús – 10 trip pass: €8.50. This pass is valid only on the bus network, without transfers to the metro. Unlimited bus transfers are allowed within 1 hour.

As in the case of the metro, to top up the fare you need to buy a plastic card for 2 €. Cardboard cards for €1 are not available on buses.

There are several single tickets for those who actively travel on all modes of transport.

  • Bono Travel Card is a single pass for €9 for 10 bus and metro journeys within zone A. This card allows 3 transfers between buses and metro within 50 minutes.
  • Bono Travel Card AB – €15.5 travel card for 10 trips within zones A and B valid on Metrovalencia, EMT buses and Metrobús suburban buses. If you do not plan to constantly travel to the suburbs, this ticket will be redundant.
  • T1, T2 and T3 are time-based passes. They are valid for buses and metros and allow unlimited travel in zone A. Price: 4.00 € for T1, which is valid 24 hours from the date of the first validation, 6.70 € for two-day T2 and 9.70 € – for a three-day T3. These tickets can also be bought at vending machines and tobacco shops.
  • Valencia Tourist Card is a tourist card that gives discounts at museums and free travel on public transport within all four zones, including the airport. It is valid for a limited time: from 1 to 3 days. Price: from 15 to 25 €. The tourist card is sold only in tourist information centers. Read more about the tourist map here.

Return trips on Bono Travel are not allowed, on T1, T2 and T3 you can go anywhere and as many times as you like without leaving the A-zone, and the tourist card does not restrict movement throughout Valencia.

Not exactly public, but also transport: Hop On Hop Off buses. Three Valencia Bus Turistic routes take you to all the places of interest in Valencia. Headphones with an audio guide are given out in the bus cabin (although there is no Russian language).
