La Rambla
Market/Bazaar
Fodor’s Choice
Barcelona’s most spectacular food market, also known as the Mercat de Sant Josep, is an explosion of life and color. As you turn in from La Rambla, you’re greeted by bar-restaurants serving tapas at counters and stall after stall selling fruit, herbs, veggies, nuts, candied preserves, cheese, ham, fish, poultry, and other types of provender. Although you can avoid the worst of the crowds by browsing before 8 am and after 5 pm, most of the time, you’ll have to wade through throngs of both locals and visitors. Indeed, the market has become so popular, that tourist groups of 15 people or more are banned from entering between 8 am to 3 pm Monday through Saturday.
Under a Moderniste hangar of wrought-iron girders and stained glass, the market occupies a Neoclassical square built in 1840, after the original Sant Josep convent was torn down, by architect Francesc Daniel Molina. The Ionic columns around the edges of the market were part of the mid-19th-century square, uncovered in 2001…

Under a Moderniste hangar of wrought-iron girders and stained glass, the market occupies a Neoclassical square built in 1840, after the original Sant Josep convent was torn down, by architect Francesc Daniel Molina. The Ionic columns around the edges of the market were part of the mid-19th-century square, uncovered in 2001 after more than a century of neglect.
Highlights include the sunny greengrocers’ market outside (to the right if you enter from La Rambla), along with Pinotxo (Pinocchio), just inside to the right, where owner Juanito Bayén and his family serve some of the best food in Barcelona. The secret? “Fresh, fast, hot, salty, and garlicky.” If it’s too crowded to find a seat, the Kiosko Universal, over toward the port side of the market, and Quim de la Boqueria, both offer delicious alternatives. Don’t miss the fruits del bosc (fruits of the forest) specialty stand at the back of the market, with its display of wild mushrooms, herbs, nuts, and berries.

La Rambla in Barcelona. I Need Spain
The bright authentic La Rambla also includes several streets under the general name Les Rambles (Las Ramblas), such as Rambla de Canaletes, Rambla dels Estudis, Rambla de Sant Josep, Rambla dels Caputxins, Rambla de Santa Mònica and Rambla del Mar.
The Virreina Palace, the La Boqueria Market, the Liceu Theatre, the Santa Mònica Art Center, the Erotic Museum, the Wax Museum and the Plaza Reial are worth a visit. Tourists and locals love to stop by the many shops, elegant cafes and beautiful historic buildings that are located within or near the boulevard. However, like the main street in any big city, this place has its drawbacks. Les Rambles is popular with pickpockets and petty swindlers. And because Les Rambles is a famous tourist destination, where millions of people pass each year, prices for goods and services here can be significantly higher than in other areas.

Market La Boqueria
One of Barcelona’s landmarks, the Mercat de San Josep de la Boquería is the most famous market in the city and one of the best in Europe and the world. It is located in Barcelona’s Old Town, close to Les Rambles.
According to historical data, La Boqueria was founded around 1217, when the locals began to sell meat and products in large quantities at the gates of the city. Over the course of several centuries, the market changed its name several times: Mercat Bornet, Mercat de la Palla, Placa Nova Market, Placa del Treball and, finally, Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, in honor of the monastery of Saint Josep, which is located nearby. The market was officially opened in 1840 and there are currently 200 stalls in La Boqueria.
Wax Museum
Museu de Cera – The Barcelona Wax Museum is located on a small slope off Les Rambles and offers visitors the opportunity to get to know more than 300 famous wax figures. The museum is housed in a magnificent 19th century neoclassical building and is a wonderful combination of culture, history, music and entertainment. The museum exhibits figures of Albert Einstein, Superman, Francisco Franco, Salvador Dali and Don Quixote, as well as unusual characters from Star Wars.
Palau de Virreina
The palace building was built between 1772 and 1775 and decorated with baroque and rococo elements. Currently, the palace is the headquarters of the cultural department of the Barcelona City Council and the Image Center. The palace’s exhibition center displays the work of some of Catalonia’s most famous contemporary artists, such as Oriol Boguigas and Antoni Abad.
The Palau de la Virreine is known for its main façade decorated with pilasters and a large balustrade with twelve vases overlooking the courtyard where the stairs begin. This palace hosts temporary exhibitions, usually related to art, photography or literature. On the ground floor of the palace there is an information office and a ticket office for various shows.
Erotic Museum
This museum in Barcelona was created as an educational and entertainment center focused on erotica, a classic theme in human history and culture.
The Museum of Erotica is the first museum of erotic art and culture, where we can see the development of eroticism in various artistic and cultural aspects from anthropological, archaeological and literary points of view. The museum houses more than 800 works of great historical value, showing manifestations of eroticism in the rituals and religious rites of many cultures and covering several periods of history, from Ancient Greece and Rome to Europe of the 20th century. The museum is also famous for its large collection of Asian art and showcases contemporary erotic art in the works of world-famous artists.

It is quite difficult to visit Barcelona and ignore the central street – La Rambla. Its length is 1.2 km, it originates directly from Plaza Catalunya, and then, past the Gothic Quarter and the Raval district, it rushes to the Columbus monument, which is located in the Old Port. La Rambla Boulevard is a pedestrian zone, where every day you can find a lot of new experiences and plunge into the extraordinary atmosphere that shows the hospitality of the Catalans.
How did it appear?
Barcelona in 1766 occupied a small territory, and its inhabitants were sorely lacking space even to build a modest dwelling. Then it was decided to remove the fortress walls separating the Gothic quarter from the outskirts of the city and as a result it became more spacious, and the townspeople got an excellent place for festivities and leisurely walks. It is worth noting that there is entertainment on the Rambla for the liking of different segments of the population, it is democratic enough to provide a memorable event for everyone who has visited it.
The Rambla is divided into five parts, and each of them is named in its own way, but with the prefix Rambla:
- Rambla de Canale̒tes – Rambla Canaletes;
- Rambla de Sant Josep – Rambla of St. Joseph;
- Rambla dels Estudis – Rambla Teachings;
- Rambla de Santa Mo̒nica – Rambla of Santa Monica;
- Rambla dels Caputxins
In 1992, the Olympics were held here, and in honor of its opening, a pedestrian bridge was built in Barcelona leading to the Maremagnum shopping establishment. Sometimes this structure is also included as a separate part of the Rambla.
What is there to see or visit?
Among the many presented historical buildings and other architectural structures, there are those that will leave an indelible impression in the soul.
Fountain Canaletes
It is located right at the beginning of the boulevard, it is noteworthy that drinking water comes from its bowels. The architectural work itself is made of high-strength cast iron. You can walk to it slowly from Plaça Catalunya and many tourists make their routes next to it to visit this magnificent building. But not only its appearance tempts the guests of the city, the fact is that many signs and beliefs are associated with it.
The main one is that if you drink water from it, you can be sure of returning to Spain. This belief is akin to when coins are thrown into the sea in order to be sure to return to it next year. Having drunk from the fountain, you seemed to be filled with the power of the country, it accepted you and will wait again.
Barcelona fans have their own associations with this fountain. They chose it as a kind of symbol, which, if their favorite team wins, celebrates its triumph. They shout chants, occasionally set off fireworks, and meaningfully make it clear how much they love their football idols.
The fountain was not chosen by football fans in vain; at the beginning of the last century, the office of the newspaper of the same name “La Rambla” was located on this site. There was a stand near her office, where the results of matches with the participation of Barca were constantly hung. It has been a long time since the closing of the newspaper, but the fans have chosen this place for their meetings, besides, it has attributes of their hobby – four taps through which drinking water flows, and a lantern with 4 horns.
Boqueria Market
This is a kind of trade symbol of Barcelona, you can find absolutely everything on it. It would seem that you can find something you need in all this chaos of the bazaar, but sellers are happy to help, they are distinguished by their special hospitality and desire to provide the best goods.
The opening of the market took place on St. Joseph’s Day and it was in 1840, which is why the market has a second name in honor of this saint. Previously, meat was sold on this place on the Rambla. Then the market was ennobled, a roof made of metal was installed. Boquería is considered a special place for gourmets, as it offers the freshest fruits, fish, vegetables, meat and other products. There are many similar markets in Barcelona, but this one has a special atmosphere, which is why tourists tend to buy some of the “goodies” here.
Plaza del Hos
It seems to unite two borders, on the one hand, the Rambla of St. Joseph goes to it, and on the other, the Rambla of the Capuchins. It is small, but very colorful, earlier in its place, even before the fall of the fortress wall, the massive gates of Boqueria, which were created in the Arabic style, were installed in its place.
Miro Mosaic
This work of the famous artist Joan Miro, amazing in its beauty and saturation of colors, is located right under the feet of tourists and residents of the city. It was performed by him at 1976, it shows the laconic solutions that were inherent in this Catalan creator. Over time, of course, the colors faded and in 2006 their brightness and saturation were restored, in addition to the combination of white and black, there are red, blue and yellow on the mosaic.
Liceo Theater
It is located on the site where the Capuchin monastery used to be. Its opening took place in 1847 and to this day this opera house is one of the most significant in the country, and in combination it is the main attraction of the Rambla. Next to it there is a metro station, which bears the same name as the theater – “Liceo”.
The theater building has recently undergone forced reconstruction, which lasted five years. And this happened due to a fire that engulfed the entire interior of the building in 1994, almost the entire interior of the structure was damaged. But after a grand renovation, the theater again began to regularly meet its grateful audience, its capacity is 2 thousand people. Many distinguished opera singers dream of performing under its arches, and countless tourists wish to get into its penates.
Royal Square
It marks the end of the Rambla of the Capuchins and the beginning of the Rambla Monica, in the center of Plaza Reial (as the name of the square sounds) there is a fountain with a very poetic name – “Three Graces”. The Royal Square attracts not only with its beauty, but is also very interesting for those who revere the creations of Gaudí. This fountain was created almost at the very beginning of the architect’s career.
On the same square, there is a less voluminous in comparison with the Liceu, but the older theater Principal, it was opened back in 19century. Despite its ancient origin, the facade of the building has remained in good condition to this day, it has never been reconstructed.
Palace Güell
On Barcelona’s main street is the famous Palau Güell, commissioned by the wealthy industrialist and later patron of the young architect Gaudí. He immediately considered the potential of his new acquaintance and entrusted him to build his family nest next to the old parental home, while asking to combine the two buildings. The architect connected them with a covered passage and arranged housing according to the most innovative ideas at that time.
Transport links off Las Ramblas
This is a pedestrian street, but it has two narrow roads that run along its very edges. It is on them that public transport moves, but its movement is clearly limited and is carried out extremely rarely.
But on the map you can find that some parts of La Rambla are connected to the metro and its stations are located right next to famous architectural monuments or overlook the square:
- in the northern part of the street is the Catalunya metro station, you can get to it on the green line using the L3 line or by taking the red line, but here you need to take the L1 line;
- the middle part of the street, near the Liceu theater, has its own station of the same name, it can be reached on the green line, taking the line L3;
- the southern part has its own communication, near the monument to Columbus there is the Drassanes station, to which the L3 line leads.
