Entrance to the fabulous Boqueria Market

La Boqueria is a famous market located in El Raval with an entrance to the market from La Rambla. It provides a wide variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, sweets as well as meat, fish, cheese and dairy. However even if you’re not looking to buy anything at the market it is well worth a visit in its own right just to soak up the atmosphere and the explosion of colours from the fresh fruits in the stalls.

Had enough of shopping? Take a break in a small eatary in Boqueria market

The concept of Boqueria started from the 1200s and the market grew as neighboring towns joined the trade of merchandise and today is known as the La Boqueria Market in La Rambla.

Guide to La Boqueria Food Market in Barcelona

Page Content

About two thirds of the way up the Ramblas, on the left, you will see one of Europe’s largest and most famous food markets. This is a place where I love to spend an hour or so feasting the senses.

The Boqueria’s grand iron entrance leads to a fully functioning world of food that throngs with both tourists and locals. The floors are slippy with melted ice and fruit skins and the stall holders are loud, but this all adds to the charm of the experience. You will find foods of all varieties and nationalities under one roof.

Fresh fruit at La Boqueria

It is worth aiming to get to the Boqueria in the morning – preferably before 14:00, as this is when the market is really in full swing. I enjoy walking around the market before lunchtime.

Restaurant in Boqueria market

Dotted around the market there are bars selling both food and drink. They are most popular for lunches but are also an option for a lighter snack.

The most famous of these bars is El Pinotxo, just to the right of the entrance. However, if you struggle to find one of the coveted high-stools here, rest assured that the bars further towards the back of the market are of equal quality. Foods are priced similarly to a quality restaurant. This can seem absurd, as a man carrying a pig carcass passes right underneath your nose, but it also serves to remind you of the freshness of the produce on offer.

The fruit stalls throughout the market sell freshly squeezed fruit juices of many different varieties – a healthy and refreshing treat in the middle of the mayhem.

If you are in search of a quick, cheap and quality snack during your visit to the Boqueria, head down the centre of the market to just behind the fish sections. You will find a small stall manned by an Italian man with a wood fired oven selling pizzas by the slice – a favourite of El Bulli’s founder Ferran Adria.

Dried hams or Jamon as it is known here.

The Boqueria Food Market is a must-see during a trip to Barcelona. Specialist stalls selling many and varied options of olives, seafood, fruit, meats, cheeses and much more are all on offer. Whether you buy some picnic ingredients, feast at one of the tapas bars or simply take a look, you are guaranteed to have a memorable experience.

Las Ramblas in Barcelona: Guide and Recommendations

Page Content

This article provides detailed information about Barcelona’s famous La Rambla (or Las Ramblas as it is often referred to by locals), including key sights, places of interest and links to hotels in the Rambla area.

Las Ramblas is often the first thing tourists associate with the city. This is the most central boulevard that runs through the very heart of the city center. It’s a vibrant and lively promenade, home to some of Barcelona’s best (and sometimes the worst. But more on that later).

Las Ramblas

Orienteering – Las Ramblas

Las Ramblas stretches for about 1.2 km. At the southern end of the street is the Port Vell area (next to the cruise port terminals), and at the northern end is Plaça Catalunya (Catalunya Square).

If you stand with your back to Port Vell (Port Vell) and look towards Plaça Catalunya (Catalunya Square), then on your left will be the Raval (Raval) area, and on your right – Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter).

Las Ramblas (La Rambla) in Barcelona can be roughly divided into two parts – calm and dubious. The difference between them becomes especially noticeable at nightfall, when the southern part of the Ramblas turns into something similar to the red light district, where night butterflies (prostitutes) flock.

Theater Liceu

When I say north of the Ramblas, I mean everything north of the Liceu theater (which bisects the Ramblas), and the south is everything south of the Liceu theater.

Public transport operating on Las Ramblas in Barcelona

Most of La Rambla is a pedestrian street, with only two narrow one-way roads flanking the central Ramblas.

The Barcelona City Council has restricted the movement of vehicles in this area, and one gets the feeling that everything here is for pedestrians (which in itself is a rather pleasant change). Unlike other cities with wide roads passing through the center, in Barcelona it was decided to organize traffic so that in the heart of the city there were mostly only pedestrian streets, and major roads were on its periphery.

Japanese-style images and decorations on a building in La Rambla

Metro stations on Las Ramblas in Barcelona

The Ramblas has three metro stations, making the street an excellent starting point for exploring the entire city.

At the southern end of La Rambla, near the monument to Christopher Columbus, is the metro station Drassanes. (Green Line, L3)

In the middle of Las Ramblas (La Rambla), right next to the theater Liceu (Liceo), station 9 is located0059 Metro Liceu. (Green Line, L3)

At the northern end of Barcelona’s Ramblas is the Catalunya metro station, served by the two metro lines (Green Line, L3) and (Red Line, L1). From Catalunya Station you can also take the Aerobus (an express bus to the airport) and the Barcelona Sightseeing Bus (a bus that you can get off at any place of your interest, and then take the next one and continue the tour), which travels to three popular tourist routes.

Accommodation on Las Ramblas in Barcelona

There is plenty of accommodation on the Ramblas – hotels, hostels and rental apartments.

Although the Ramblas is located in the center of the city, you should not forget that when you settle on the Ramblas, you need to be prepared for noise. There is no escape from this. Whether your hotel has double windows or not, the noise will still be heard. The street can be noisy even at night when the Ramblas is still awake, at 3 am or later. Read our guide to hotels in the Las Ramblas 9 area0005

Entertainment attractions on Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

The Ramblas has a variety of activities such as live performances, live statues, portrait and caricature artists, and official establishments:

Erotic Museum (Museu de l’ Erotica) – La Rambla, 96 (be prepared to see some pretty interesting toys),
Christopher Columbus Monument and
Boqueria Modernist Market.

Living statues

Ramblas is famous for its street performers, including live statues.

Living statue: Galileo
Living statue: White artist

Did you know there are works by Miro on La Rambla? The famous artist Joan Miró really had a hand in creating part of the Ramblas. Many thousands of people every day walk right on the Miro mosaic on the Ramblas (La Rambla) and do not know it themselves.

Miró mosaic on La Rambla

Where are Miró’s works, you ask? Miró’s circular mosaics can be found near the Liceu theater and the Liceu metro station. Note the large circular colored mosaic in the center of the Ramblas. If you look closely, you will even see one tile signed by Miró himself.

Shops on the Ramblas in Barcelona.

Dozens of restaurants and shops line the Ramblas in Barcelona. However, due to the popularity of Las Ramblas, and the number of visitors alone, the prices here are inflated and the overall service is worse than in less touristy areas.

La Boqueria Food Market

I wouldn’t dine at a restaurant on the Ramblas, if only because there are better places. But a tourist who came here for the first time should definitely sit on the Ramblas with a decanter of sangria.

If you’re looking for something special, almost everything from an electrical adapter, special camera batteries, clothes, or even some large items that are hard to find in regular stores can be found at El Corte Inglés.

El Corte Inglés is located on Plaça Catalunya, at the northern end of the Ramblas. El Corte Inglés is a huge department store, on seven floors of which there are shops of different directions. If you can’t find what you need here, then you can’t find it anywhere!

Las Ramblas security in Barcelona.

Las Ramblas is a popular tourist attraction in its own right. At any time of the day or night, several thousand tourists will roam the Ramblas, soaking up the atmosphere and having fun.

However, there is another group of people who are attracted to the Ramblas for a completely different reason. They want to profit from the tourists. Who are they? Pickpockets and swindlers!

To be on the safe side of the Ramblas, I highly recommend reading my article on safety in Barcelona. From the article you will learn about the potential dangers awaiting you, as well as how to protect yourself from them. Follow the recommendations in the article to make your contribution to getting rid of scammers in Barcelona. Without an abundance of easy targets, it is possible that pickpockets and purse pickers will gradually become a thing of the past. Read our guide to safety on Las Ramblas.

Accommodation on La Rambla

If you stay in a hotel on La Rambla, you have direct access to the city center, plus the street itself is one of the most popular places where tourists stay. On La Rambla (La Rambla) there are quite a large number of hotels. To help you find the right hotel for you, we have created a detailed page on how to choose a hotel on La Rambla.

Map of La Rambla

You might want to get an idea of this street before your trip with our map of La Rambla.

To summarize

Well, that concludes this brief visit to the Ramblas, but we still have a lot of information on housing on Las Ramblas itself and next to it just below in the “Related Pages” section. There you will also find links to both an article about safety in Barcelona and a photo gallery of Las Ramblas.
