Go-To Picnic Spots in 7 San Mateo County Parks
The last two years have highlighted just how important parks and open space are for our mental and physical health. Now, with everything opened up, we can nurture an appreciation for our parks with that favorite summertime activity – picnicking! So, cut up the watermelon and take your friends and family to these old and perhaps new favorites for some summer picnic fun.
Meadow View drop-in picnic area
Junipero Serra Park
Junipero Serra Park is lesser known but offers an array of fun family activities for passing a summer day, and you can bring your dog (on-leash) too. Check out the drop-in picnic areas near the Meadow View playground which boasts a spectacular 54-foot double slide that will thrill kids and grown-ups alike.
For a nice stretch after lunch you can learn more about the park along the short 0.4-mile Live Oak Nature Trail or catch some outstanding views from the top of Quail Loop Trail. If you seek shade for your large group picnic, reserve the Bay View Picnic Shelter, which as its name suggests, affords epic views of the bay.

San Bruno Mountain
San Bruno Mountain State and County Park has some of the best views on the Peninsula, especially of the San Francisco skyline. At the drop-in picnic areas near the main parking lot, there are barbecue pits, restroom facilities and an open grassy area that is popular for volleyball, frisbee, kite-flying or kicking back on a blanket.
After your picnic, you might choose to explore Saddle Loop Trail – a wide and relatively flat two-mile loop that offers the opportunity to point out landmarks or see what’s blooming.

Mirada Surf
California Coastal Trail at Mirada Surf, photo by Eric Steven Sevilla
If coastal views, bird watching and an easy stroll are your speed, then Mirada Surf is your picnic spot. And you can bring your dog on leash too! This 15-acre bluff offers gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean from one of several picnic tables along a section of the California Coastal Trail.
At Magellan Avenue, there are restrooms and a bike fix-it station. If you want to get your toes in the sand at low tide, you can do so at Surfers Beach. For a longer walk, stay on the Coastal Trail and either head north to Pillar Point Harbor or south toward Half Moon Bay beaches.
Group picnic area at Huddart Park
Huddart Park
Huddart Park, nestled in the Santa Cruz mountains, offers 24 miles of hiking trails through a mix of second growth redwood forest, evergreen forest and chaparral. The park includes a large meadow with a playground and sand volleyball courts (bring your own equipment) and a variety of picnic sites and shelters with barbeques, horseshoe pits and restrooms.
Check out the drop-in Madrone Picnic Area near trail marker 19 where you are surrounded by oak, madrone, coast redwood and brush. For a larger group, reserve the Redwood Picnic Area near trail marker 47 and enjoy the cool, shady redwood grove with a nearby, small amphitheater.
$6 parking fee; self-guided tour available
Memorial Park
Memorial Park is a perennial favorite for summertime family camping, as time spent amongst the redwoods is rejuvenating and fun. This historic park will soon turn 100 and campsites and picnic areas are receiving the royal treatment.
Our favorite drop-in picnic spot is Legion Flat where one can lounge under first growth redwoods. Pescadero Creek runs nearby and is a perfect spot for wading and searching for invertebrates. A short walk down the Tan Oak Nature Trail gets you to the park’s largest redwood tree which is 225 feet and 1,600 years old!
$6 parking fee; self-guided tour available
Coyote Point
With a little something for everyone, Coyote Point Recreation Area is one of the most visited and easily accessible parks in the San Mateo County Parks system. Visitors love the 42-foot castle at Magic Mountain playground, riding their bikes along the Bay Trail, strolling around the marina or flying a kite in the grassy meadow. There is an abundance of picnic spots with barbecue grills, volleyball courts and horseshoe pits.
Picnicking near Magic Mountain Playground
For a drop-in picnic area, visit the upper knoll by the Captain’s House and then stroll over to the Merchant Marine Memorial overlook for gorgeous bay views. If you have a large group with kids, you can reserve one of 15 sites within the Magic Mountain Picnic Area. This gets you close to playgrounds, restrooms and year-round beach access thanks to the newly redone Promenade Trail.
$6 parking fee
San Pedro Valley Park
When it’s a foggy day on the coast, you can often find sunshine at San Pedro Valley Park, tucked in the foothills of Pacifica. Exploring some of the park’s 10 miles of hiking trails affords many pleasant surprises, such as ocean views, a seasonal waterfall, freshwater creeks and maybe a bobcat. For a spontaneous drop-in picnic area, check out the tables at the start of Trout Farm Trail and fuel up for your ascent to the top of Montara Mountain.
Old Trout Farm picnic area at San Pedro Valley Park
If you are seeking a spot for a large group, the reservable North and South Walnut Grove picnic areas offer a mix of shade and sun and are adjacent to a large grassy meadow. Bring your own equipment to enjoy a game of horseshoes or volleyball.

The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation has a long, proud history which has brought us to where we are today.
Prior to becoming the Department of Parks and Recreation, operations and facilities were managed by 1) the Parks Division, which was responsible for maintaining all physical aspects of parks under the Forester and Fire Warden’s Office, and 2) the Department of Recreation, Camps and Playgrounds which was responsible for administering all park programs.
On July 1, 1944, the Department of Parks and Recreation was created by ordinance and all functions were merged into this new Department. Since then, the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation has been meeting the recreational needs of residents and visitors from all over the world through programming, facilities, land acquisition and environmental stewardship and more!
Today, the Department owns 182 beautiful parks including natural areas, wildlife sanctuaries, lakes, trails, arboreta and botanic gardens and local, community and regional parks. The Department also operates the largest municipal golf system with 20 courses at 18 locations and owns great cultural venues including the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre and the world famous Hollywood Bowl.
Creative and innovative recreational programming offers something special for every member of the family and a number of special events are held annually for the enjoyment of the entire community.
The Department is committed to providing social, cultural and recreational opportunities for all to enjoy! The mission and goals of the Department are accomplished through unwavering support from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, County Chief Executive Office, partnerships with other County Departments, Friends Groups, Foundations, non-profit groups and other organizations and agencies and through a team of talented and dedicated employees and volunteers who understand completely how Parks Make Life Better!

Massandra Palace in Yalta
Museum, Landmark, Monument of architecture
It would seem that not the most obvious place for a picnic is the Palace of Alexander III, located in Massandra, a suburb of Yalta. This palace is more beautiful and remarkable from the outside than from the inside. One of the indisputable charms is its surroundings – there are many shops, beautiful flower beds, mighty sequoias and a beautiful lawn framed by rose and rosemary bushes. The coziest place is a pair of benches located on the outskirts of a meadow under a hundred-year-old oak, to which a shady alley of slender pines leads from the stairs in front of the palace. Sometimes a semi-tamed fox comes here and patiently waits in the bushes for a meat delicacy to be shared with her. In the summer, towards the end of August, the grass is mowed in front of the palace and put into a haystack, on which children who are unaccustomed to such entertainment can lie.

Solar or Royal path in Yalta
Sight
A well-known path runs along the coast from the Livadia Palace, laid by the court physician for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and health promotion. The trail used to be called horizontal because it is located so evenly in the mountain landscape, without difficult slopes and heavy climbs. Along the way, there are benches where you can sit down and have a snack with sandwiches or fruits that you take with you. But still, the most important attraction is the snow-white gazebo-rotunda, located above the Nizhnyaya Oreanda sanatorium and Brezhnev’s dacha. From here you can see a beautiful view not only of the departmental park, but also of all the coasts, Yalta and even Bear Mountain. Here you can have a picnic, but you will not find benches in the gazebo, so you will have to bring a bedding with you.

Embankment named after Lenin in Yalta
Sight
The central pedestrian artery of the city, the coastal promenade can also become a picnic area, but not for sociopaths, because it is unlikely to be able to retire here. Although the density of passers-by can serve as an attraction for some, it’s almost like watching an unusual movie. The embankment in Yalta is divided by locals into Upper and Lower, because it is located on two levels. The lower embankment is equipped with wide wooden benches, designed as ledges in the rock – the supporting wall of the upper embankment. They are most often located on those wishing to have a small picnic as an alternative to the expensive open-air summer cafes located there. In the center of the embankment, the Upper and Lower parts are united by a wide staircase, along the edges of which there are many benches resembling an amphitheater descending to the sea – street musicians often perform here, and in the evenings it can be difficult to find a place to listen to an open-air concert.

Ai-Petri
Landmark, Landscape view
The highest point of the Crimean ridge near Yalta attracts many tourists. You can get here by cable car or by car. There are all conditions for recreation, including cafes and restaurants with local cuisine, among other things, offering takeaway food. Picnic lovers can take chebureks or pilaf and move a little away from this tourist booth to sit on soft grass in the shade of pine trees at any secluded point with a beautiful view of Yalta and coastal villages. Here you need to remember about safety and the possibility of landslides, so do not take risks and do not get too close to the edge of the cliff.

Vorontsovsky Park in Yalta
A park
Alupka is home to one of the largest and most beautiful parks in the Crimea, laid out according to the canons of English landscape architecture. For almost two centuries of existence, the trees in this park have reached an incredible scale, it seems that the spirit of history is hovering in every corner here. There are many secluded corners in the park where you can comfortably sit down for a picnic – benches near a pond with swans or a green lawn under sequoias overlooking Ai-Petri, or maybe a corner under overgrown strawberries or even stone chaos. Everyone can choose natural scenery to their liking.

Massandra Beach
Beach
In the evening, when the beach is empty, many take drinks, snacks, a blanket or bedding with them and lay them out on the sectors located on the Massandra beach – from here a magical view of the night city opens, and the sea creates a unique, relaxing musical background. Therefore, there are so many romantic couples here, although noisy companies of night swimmers can also be found. Choose entertainment according to the season: watch the Perseids in August, listen to music from the next party that takes place here on weekends in July, or just thoughtfully throw stones into the sea. On the day of the city, which takes place on the second Saturday of August, there will be no free space on this beach at all – everyone traditionally comes here to watch the fireworks.

The only caveat: you should not run across the lawns, as here a rare species of plants may appear under your foot.

City beach in Balaklava
Beach
This beach is the least suitable for swimming, but it is very conducive to sit down and have a snack overlooking the narrow Balaklava bay. The beach is located at the very end of the promenade, in fact, these are concrete slabs, which the townspeople also use to enter the sea. There are many fast food kiosks and ice cream stalls around, which means that you don’t even need to prepare for a picnic in advance – everything can be bought on the spot. Directly above your head you will have the ruins of the Genoese Cembalo tower, to the right – the English embankment, opposite the entrance to the submarine base is guessed in the rock.

Shady boulevard by the sea is the central place for walking in Sevastopol. On weekends, chess enthusiasts, families with children and couples in love meet here. Everyone has their own secretly limited parts of the boulevard: families with children usually walk right in front of the Aquarium, lovers hide under the Dragon Bridge, and chess players near the open theater closer to Nakhimov Square. There are many cozy benches in the park where you can sit down and have an impromptu picnic. In summer, you should definitely take soft ice cream for dessert from any stall on the boulevard.

Near the pier-stop of this sea bus and at the foot of the ravelin there is a small beach with yellowish small pebbles, which offers an excellent view of the city center, it is quiet and calm here, and the ravelin itself serves as a beautiful decoration for memorable picnic photos to the sound of the sea surf.

Cape Fiolent
Sight
Those who like to have a picnic with a view of the sea will love the rocky Cape Fiolent. An excellent solution is to turn off in front of the military unit and drive along a dirt road to a safe distance to the edge of a steep rocky coast. Turning the car to the sea, you can have a picnic right on the hood, watching the yachts and seagulls scurrying below. The only thing is that the descents to the sea are quite dangerous here, it is better not to conquer steep paths after a glass of something alcoholic.

Sevastopol residents often go for a picnic in the park, located on the territory of an abandoned estate complex, created in the early twentieth century by the architect Feldman. Here you can play ball, badminton or run with a frisbee. And when you are hungry, spread out the blanket and get fruits and pies from the picnic basket, choosing a cozy place in the shade of trees. Be aware that there will be a lot of noisy companies here on weekends and it will not be so easy to choose a good place.

This is the most beautiful park in Simferopol, proof of which is at least the fact that most of the wedding photo shoots in the city take place here. The park, which has the status of a botanical garden, surrounds the main Crimean university, it is properly looked after – there is a beautiful rose garden, ancient cedars and oaks have been preserved. Small lakes with ducks are hidden in the park, near which couples in love often have picnics. There are many sculptures made of glass and wrought iron scattered around the park, a huge plus is that this area is protected. Therefore, it is always clean and safe here.

The natural open-air museum in the village of Luchistoy nad Alushta is widely known to travelers. Bizarre forms of weathering have turned the stones here into unusual figures, which can be endlessly invented names. A popular option for a secluded picnic in the Crimea is to rent a boat and go to a place inaccessible to pedestrians, landing from the sea. In Partenit, on the city beach, there are carriers who will take you on a motor boat to the head of the Bear Mountain, there, among the large stones, you can find a place for swimming, have a picnic or even fry kebabs, if you take the coals with you, and, of course, take garbage.

11 places near Ufa where you can visit in one day – May 2, 2021

Aslykul and Sharlama waterfall
Aslykul is also called the “Bashkir Sea”
org/Person”> Photo: Veronika PilyaevaDistance from Ufa : 140 km (about 2 hours by car).
District: Davlekanovsky. Near the villages of Alga or Yangi-Turmush.
How to get there: by car you need to go along the route Ufa – Chishmy – Davlekanovo – Yangi village – Turmush. You can take the train from Ufa to Davlekanovo (runs 6 times a day), then by regular bus to the station “D. Alga. There are also regular buses from the Southern Bus Station of Ufa to Davlekanovo.
Is it possible with children? Definitely yes!
What to see?
Everyone should definitely see the “Bashkir Sea” (that’s what people call Lake Aslykul)! In summer, the shore of the lake turns into a real resort area (people live by the lake for weeks in tents or at recreation centers), but in the spring, beauty lovers flock to it. The area of the lake is 23.5 square kilometers, the water in it is always clear and clean. Magical landscapes will please the tourist’s eye: on one side, the lake is surrounded by mountains, rocks and green hills, restless seagulls scream, there are often waves and surf (why not the sea coast?) There are equipped picnic areas. There is simply no better place to spend a day in nature! If you get to Aslykul, be sure to visit another tourist attraction – the Sharlama waterfall. It is located 4 kilometers from the lake, near the village of Burangulovo. In spring, the waterfall is especially beautiful – water breaks down from a height of 12 meters, and in summer the flow intensity decreases, sometimes it even dries up.
Also, don’t forget to get some water in the equipped spring near the lake near the village of Alga: it is a sulfate-calcium mineral spring, the water in it is healthy and tasty (some tourists stock up on water there, arriving with huge 10-liter bottles).

The height of the fall of water, if you sum up all the cascades, is 12 meters. In summer, this place turns into a real tropical jungle. Another attraction that you need to visit is the remains of a stone bridge built during the reign of Catherine II and which is part of the ancient Beloretsk (Verkhneuralsky) tract. On the way to the Kuk-Karauk waterfall, you will certainly see the most beautiful rocks, and one of them, the most famous, is the Kalim-Uskan rock, 70 meters high. To admire the most beautiful view of the surroundings, you can climb to the top of the cliff – a convenient path leads there. In the rock itself there is another popular and must-see tourist site – a shallow cave with an interesting history – the cave of Salavat Yulaev. It can also be accessed by anyone. Don’t forget flashlights!
Important! When visiting the Kuk-Karauk waterfall, the Salavat cave and the Kaklim-Uskan cliff, do not stop watching the children – if safety precautions are not followed, these places can be traumatic.

Spring Red Key
Few people know that if you go a little further into the forest, you can see the second spring, although it is slightly smaller

What to see?
Haven’t seen a hydrological natural monument of federal significance yet? The second largest source of drinking water in Europe? You need to leave immediately! The source of the Red Key springs from the ground, forms a whole lake of water that does not freeze in winter, and all year round the water in it is icy and has a magical turquoise-emerald hue. In addition, the water in the source is very useful – bicarbonate calcium. Relatively recently, the place near the source was landscaped: walking areas, benches appeared, a small hydroelectric power station was built. There is also a plant for bottling drinking bottled water, and you can buy delicious water in any store in the republic.

Helicopter Cave (Akhmerovskiy failure)
The cave is not visible from the side, but visible from the air
Photo: Aleksey Lipatov, allufa / Vk.com
Distance from Ufa : 70 km (about an hour by car).
District: Aurgazinsky district. Near the village of Akhmerovo.
How to get there: by car you need to go along the R-240 Ufa – Orenburg route Ufa – Ishly – Akhmerovo and then follow the signs for about 1 km. Regular buses run from Ufa to the village of Ishla, then on foot.
Is it possible with children? Children under adult supervision.
What to see?
The helicopter cave is a huge hole 40 meters deep and 80 meters in diameter in flat ground, which is not visible from the outside, but visible from the air (that’s how the cave was discovered). The length of this karst cave is almost 1800 meters, but only speleologists with special equipment can fully pass it. It also turned out that part of the cave passes under water, and now cave divers have chosen it. Previously, it was even possible to go down into the cave only with equipment and ropes, and the entrance to it was closed for a long time. Now, an iron staircase has been made up to the first level, and you can visit the cave (not so deep) even with children. But still, it is worth remembering that the height of the descent is decent, and precautions will not hurt. You also need to be prepared for the fact that in the spring time the cave can be dirty, but for any child, visiting such a huge cave will be a real adventure!

Would you like to visit the open-air geological museum? Then choose your favorite handsome shihan – and go! It may not be possible to drive around all three in one day, but it is quite possible to capture a couple. Shikhany is a truly unique place, a natural monument. These are single mountains, which are the remains of a barrier reef formed in the warm sea (Ural Ocean) as much as 250 million years ago! That is why here you can see fossilized marine life – corals, brachiopods, sponges, etc. Well, aren’t they miracles? In addition to the fact that these mountains have an interesting history, each shikhan offers an incredible view of the surroundings. Even a child can climb to the top of the shikhan (relative to the ground, their height is small, about 300 meters), but the terrain is often loose, so you need to be careful and be sure to take clothes that protect you from the wind at the top. All shikhans are located on the right bank of the Belaya River, which means that after climbing you can have a great picnic and relax by the pond.

The second largest lake in the republic after Aslykul is also a must-see. Kandrykul (whose area, for a moment, is a little less than 16 sq. km) is famous for its purest water, so in the summer season the lake becomes a real attraction for tourists from our and neighboring regions. Dozens of recreation centers are scattered along the shore of the lake, but just setting up a tent or frying barbecue in specially designated places is a great idea. It’s also a good plan to cycle around the lake with picnic breaks. You can also rent boats and SUP surfs on the lake, and there are beautiful views from the top of the hills near the lake.
