best tips and ways to learn

Over 21 million people around the world are learning Spanish as a second language, and for good reason. It has the second largest number of speakers in the world, sounds beautiful and is considered relatively easy to learn.

While no technique is a guaranteed way to learn Spanish quickly, three simple principles of language learning are vital: you must devote a lot of time to the language, immerse yourself in the study for at least a few months, and learn using effective methods.

This may seem like a daunting task, so in this article we break it down into simple, actionable steps. Ready to start? Keep reading to find out where to start and how to learn Spanish fast.

How long does it take to learn Spanish?

It takes the average person about 575-600 hours or 24 weeks of full-time study to learn Spanish from zero to fluency. That is, if you study one hour a day, it will take about a year and a half. “Language fluency” is difficult to define because everyone progresses at a different rate and there are many factors that contribute to this.

However, it is possible to reach a conversational level of Spanish within 3-4 months:

If you are interested in learning Spanish quickly, you must be committed to this matter. Use Spanish as often as possible for the first 3 months. Read, listen and, of course, speak Spanish.

Popular ways to learn Spanish fast

There is no single best way to learn any language. A combination of different teaching techniques is required, and each person should have an individual approach. Regardless, the best place to start is by using Spanish as often as possible. The more you do, the faster you will progress.

Language School

With so many methods, apps and games available for learning Spanish online, it’s hard to believe that traditional Spanish lessons are no longer needed. However, if you really want to learn a language, there is no substitute for vocational training. Attending a language school is a clear and easy way to do this, but it is worth considering the changes that have taken place due to the pandemic.

Private Spanish tutoring

Private Spanish tutoring means you will be able to speak Spanish from the first lesson. Some students have been taking Spanish lessons for years but still struggle to form one sentence. Others manage to strike up a simple conversation in just a week or two. What is the difference? The second group spoke before they felt “ready!” Speaking is a completely different skill than writing, reading or listening, and there is still no other method to learn Spanish as easily as working with a live person.

Language specialist and polyglot Benny Lewis says:

« If speaking is your priority, then speak now! Do other things as well, as these are all part of the language learning experience and essential to a fulfilling life, but speak! Speak Now. Get to know the locals in person or online and show them what you’re made of, making mistakes and getting over them is the best way to get talking as quickly as possible.

Fortunately, finding a great online Spanish tutor to practice speaking with has never been so easy, convenient and affordable. On online learning sites like Preply, a lesson with a private Spanish tutor can cost as little as $5 an hour. If you’re serious about learning Spanish, the human contact with a tutor and investing that small amount of money into the lessons will keep you on your toes in achieving your goals like nothing else.

Self-study
Self-study is all about setting goals and making a plan. A goal without a plan is just a wish. If you haven’t planned your training, you are planning to fail. The modern world, and especially the Internet, offer many ways and tools to learn Spanish. The whole point is to be able to properly manage these opportunities. To become a well-rounded language user, you need to balance the time spent on the four basic language skills (writing, reading, speaking, and listening) as well as making time for grammar and vocabulary.

Practice with native speakers

The fastest way to learn Spanish is to buy a one-way plane ticket to Mexico, Argentina, Colombia or Spain. Or, if you love to travel, why not visit them all? It is worth recognizing that such a drastic change in lifestyle is the fastest way to become fluent in the language. Try to put yourself in a situation where you cannot not learn Spanish. For example:

  • Volunteer, study or work in a Spanish speaking country
  • Live with native Spanish speakers
  • Take an intensive Spanish course in a Spanish-speaking country
  • Make friends with Spanish speakers

Most of these ideas may seem too extreme to you. Don’t worry, you can easily learn Spanish without them. You just need to focus on the points below or consider taking Spanish lessons via Skype.

How to start learning Spanish

The answer to the question: “Where to start learning Spanish?” – very simple. Like any other language, Spanish needs to start learning with the alphabet, pronunciation and basic conversational phrases.

Alphabet

There are only 27 letters in the Spanish alphabet. Two consonants are transmitted by letter combinations CH, LL do not have separate letters.

Reading rules

Spanish is very close to Italian, French and Portuguese. For those who speak English, many Spanish words are understandable without translation. Vowels in Spanish are pronounced the same as they are written, but there are a few exceptions for U and Y . Consonants in Spanish are somewhat more difficult. Basically, they are read and written the same way, but there are exceptions:

  • B and V are read the same way. Vamos a bailar Bamos a bailar (Let’s dance).
  • C is read as “s” if it is followed by E, I or Y: cigarra – cigarra (cigar). In other cases, it is read as “to”: Cuba – Kuva (Cuba)
  • H never read: La Havana
  • J always read as “x”: Juan

Basic Spanish words

Basic Spanish phrases are worth knowing before you start learning in earnest.

Hello

  • Hola Hello
  • Buenos días – Good morning
  • Buenas tardes – Good afternoon
  • Buenas noches – Good night

Goodbyes

  • Adios – Bye, Goodbye
  • Hasta luego
  • Hasta mañana – See you tomorrow

How are you?

  • ¿Qué tal?
  • ¿Cómo estás? (you)
  • ¿Cómo está? (you)

Options

  • Muy bien — Excellent
  • Bien – Good
  • Más o menos — More or less
  • Así así
  • Mal – Bad
  • Muy mal – Very bad

Words of courtesy

  • Gracias — Thank you
  • Muchas gracias – Thank you very much
  • De nada
  • Por favor
  • Perdone – Sorry
  • Lo siento – Excuse me

Spanish Grammar

Many adults who are successful learners of Spanish did not like grammar in their high school language classes. For many of us, these memories have simply become one long conjugation exercise. Partly for this reason, language-learning influencers (if you’re new to this corner of the internet—yes, they exist!) often advise you not to bother learning grammar: it’s boring, rote work, and native speakers break grammar rules all the time.

However, a little knowledge of grammar can go a long way. Instead of avoiding grammar entirely, try learning the minimum level you need to express yourself. To have a simple conversation in Spanish, you should try to learn the present tense and then one past tense.

You can then use the Spanish verb “voy + a” (I’m going) to “hack” the future tense. It’s pretty simple! Once you get the hang of these basic grammar structures, you can add more tenses and rules to them as they come up as you read and listen.

Major difficulties in learning Spanish

For people who speak English, learning Spanish can be quite easy. Both Spanish and English use the Latin alphabet, as do many other European languages, including Portuguese, French, and Italian, so they are almost identical in terms of the letters used. The plural also works in the same way and there is a large shared vocabulary.

However, learning Spanish is difficult. For example, the speed at which Spanish speakers speak to each other and pronunciation can be difficult for beginners. But, if you are planning to learn Spanish, you should not be embarrassed by the difficulties.

Tips on how to learn Spanish without dying of boredom

Decide on your motivation

There are many superstitions about the power of planning, and in the case of learning Spanish they are true. To learn anything, especially quickly, you must plan how and when you are going to do it. How much you can learn Spanish from scratch depends only on you. You must set a goal for yourself, which you need to achieve within a certain period of time. For example:

  • Goal: to learn how to have a simple conversation with my colleagues in Spanish (without switching to English!) in four months.

Then you have to break down your goal into results needed to achieve it.

  • Result: read one chapter of a book in Spanish per week
  • Result: sign up for Spanish lessons
  • Result: listen to a Spanish podcast every morning at breakfast
  • Result: write one page in Spanish per day
  • Result: take lessons with a tutor three times a week

Then break these deliverables into smaller steps and schedule time to work on them. Look at your calendar and set aside a specific time for classes.

Consistency and hard work are the secrets of an effective learning habit, and good old-fashioned planning makes it much easier to stay consistent. Try it and you will be amazed!

Move from simple to complex

According to the Spanish Dictionary of the Real Academia Española, there are 93,000 words in Spanish. But even when you get to native fluency, the most common ones will still make up the bulk of your everyday conversations.

Common sense is that some words are much more common than others. Some research shows that learning the 2,000 most common words will give you 80% of what you need to understand. Learning Spanish is not a number game, but quantity matters when you build up your vocabulary!

Use apps

There are many great free language learning tools available online. This includes apps for iOS and Android, podcasts, Youtube videos and blogs on topics such as performance in Spanish or tips for learning Spanish. This can be a great way to get started without spending a dime. Find the areas that interest you the most, or collect the questions you have and try to find free content on your favorite platforms.
Flashcards have drawbacks as a learning method, but they are great for learning the first 2,000 words quickly. Here are some card sites you can try.

  • Clozemaster pro : An online game that helps you learn vocabulary in context. You choose the first 500, 2,000, or 10,000 most common words. Instead of memorizing them, you choose which word fills a gap in a particular sentence from a list of options. This is a great reading comprehension practice.
  • Memrise : A fun card app. There are sets of the most common Spanish words and lots of games to help you learn them.
  • Anki: is a no-frills flashcard app that has something of a cult following among language learners. It uses spaced repetition techniques to help new words stick in your long-term memory.
  • Duolingo : A great free app that allows you to improve your vocabulary at a basic level. It’s limited because you can’t practice or hear real conversations, but it’s handy for learning your first 2,000 Spanish words.

Use multimedia

The next time you’re looking for a new workout, recipe, or tutorial video, try looking in Spanish. Listening to Spanish-language YouTube will help you with your vocabulary and understanding of the language. Our article on YouTube channels in Spanish is also helpful.
Do you have Siri, Cortana, Google Assistant or Alexa in your life? Switch them to the Spanish version and you’ll have a very patient (albeit rather robotic) speaking partner. Try to communicate in Spanish every day. The more time you spend, the faster you will learn!

Immerse yourself in the language

Most YouTube videos, blog posts and podcasts about learning Spanish boil down to the same advice: immerse yourself in it as much as possible. Once you reach beginner level (A1 or A2), most of your “study time” should be spent interacting with Spanish the way you do it in real life – either by listening, speaking, writing or reading.

Immersion techniques are generally more effective than using textbooks or apps because they are more relevant to real-world Spanish situations. Get creative with your diving techniques and don’t limit yourself to things that feel like studying! Ask yourself: what parts of my daily life can now be in Spanish?

Chat with native speakers

Get as much speaking practice as possible. This is worth mentioning a second time because it’s true: If you want to learn Spanish quickly, it’s very important to practice speaking a lot.

Those who put off starting a conversation in a new language will often find it difficult to speak it in the long run. But it’s not only that! Speaking a new language is magic. This is exactly where you should start learning Spanish. The need to master the language in real life situations can help synthesize the grammar, listening comprehension, vocabulary and sentence structure you have been learning.

To find someone to practice your Spanish with for free, check out our guide to the best apps and websites for language exchange.

During a language exchange, you find a Spanish speaker who wants to learn your native language, and you teach each other some new language skills, usually through conversation. Your exchange partner will become your informal (and hopefully fun) Spanish teacher. If you are unable to meet for a language exchange in person, please call via Skype.
We would like to remind you that on Preply you can learn Spanish online with a native speaker.

Read in Spanish

Reading in a foreign language can be difficult, but finding stories or articles at your level can be a huge help. In his top tips for quickly learning a polyglot language, Ollie Richards suggests starting with the short, simple dialogues you’ll find in any textbook.

As you read, you can highlight words and phrases you don’t understand, mark them, and look up a translation. This will help you remember them and expand your Spanish vocabulary. Reading will also give you an understanding of grammar and how to build sentences.

Reading the news in Spanish is great because you can follow current events and things that interest you while improving your reading skills.

Listen to songs in Spanish

Make Spanish radio stations your default and your listening skills will improve quickly. Listening to music artists from Latin America or Spain will also help you pick up phrases and vocabulary. If you have a Spanish song that you love stuck in your head all day, why not use this?

Watch TV shows and listen to podcasts

There are many great TV shows and movies in Spanish set in Spain or Latin America so you can enjoy watching while improving your Spanish. Try watching with subtitles turned on. Every time you find a phrase that seems useful to you, write it down in a notebook.

You’ll quickly create a list of sample sentences that native Spanish speakers use, and you’ll be able to speak fluently without conjugating anything. If you watch Netflix, try the free Chrome Language Learning with Netflix extension, which displays subtitles in two languages. We highly recommend downloading it.

Experiment with techniques

It’s easy to spend an hour or two a day aimlessly scrolling on your phone with no benefits, but if you change the settings, you can turn that dead time into language practice. You will be surprised how useful it can be to know such simple words as “clock”, “cards” or “password”.
Try sentence mining. When it comes to learning a language, there aren’t many ways to make learning easier, but memorizing whole sentences or “sentence mining” is an exception.

When you first start speaking Spanish, sentence formation is a slow and complex process. Learn a few useful phrases that you know sound natural and you’ll have a set of patterns to work with. For example:

  • ¿Cómo te llamas? – What is your name?
  • ¿Qué hora es? – What time is it now?

This will help you sound more comfortable and allow you to use the same phrases as native speakers.

Benny Lewis, a Fluent polyglot in 3 months, picks up new languages quickly using phrasebooks. If you love the idea of searching for sentences, phrasebooks are a great place to start learning Spanish! They are built around the most useful suggestions for everyday use and usually contain pronunciation tips for beginners.

Start learning Spanish now

If you’re trying to learn Spanish as quickly as possible, you’ll probably want to focus on the most important language skills. With that in mind, working on your accent can seem like a frivolous waste of study time, or even a bit of a waste. However, there are (at least!) good reasons why it’s wise to start perfecting your accent early on.

First, if you learn the sounds of Spanish in the first month, it will improve your pronunciation for the rest of your Spanish-speaking life! It’s much easier to learn good habits from the start than it is to go back and change the rules that are already in your head. This is especially true of speech, which involves muscle memory. What’s more, Spanish is a phonetic language, so you only need to learn the rules once to understand how most words are pronounced.

Second, working on your accent can improve your listening comprehension. Many learners find it difficult to understand spoken Spanish at the beginning because the speech speed tends to be much faster than English and the pronunciation can be difficult to understand.

As you work on your Spanish pronunciation, you will also learn to recognize and identify the sounds of Spanish as you hear them.
