According to Russian-speaking people, Spanish is considered much easier than English. It is much easier for Russian speakers because of the similarity of words in Russian and the ease of reading. Let’s see why many are taken for it after English. In fact, everything is simple. Now Spanish has great prospects after international English. In addition, it is the second most common in the world.

How is progress in language learning measured? It all depends on the goals and intensity of training, but here are the main indicators:
- Improved listening comprehension in Spanish
- Your writing gets more advanced: using new vocabulary and grammar constructions
- You speak easier: you don’t think long about the correct word, you can find a synonym for the word. You can keep up the conversation on a new, more complex topic
- You can read increasingly difficult texts. Ranging from simple stories to news in Spanish and academic texts.
- Successful completion of examinations or language proficiency tests such as DELE, SIELE or eLADE
Well, now the most important question: how much can you reach a new level in Spanish?
It is clear that everything depends on the regularity and intensity of classes, immersion in the language environment, motivation and your individual characteristics.
The average person who is highly motivated and practices two to four times a week, doing homework, and practicing skills and learning vocabulary and grammar, reaches an A2 level in six to eight months.
Later, it takes more and more time to move from one level to another, because at each new level the number of language structures increases, and the skills themselves become more complex.
And to reach a new level in our school, you need 2 packages of 32 lessons. That is, if you study every day, it will take 2 months to jump from A1 to A2 or from A2 to B1.
I Determine why we need Spanish
The advice seems banal, but if you think about it, this is our foundation in the process of learning a language. If you want to reach a certain level (for example, reach B2), then understand why you need Spanish: it can be emigrating, working in Spain or a Latin American country, studying, or you are learning the language for new perspectives in life and work. That is, set a goal. A great way to set goals is the SMART approach. You can read about it here.
Next, you need to work out the goal. How to do it?
- Rate the importance of the goal from 0-10 points. Ask: How important is the goal to me? If you get 6-7 points, then you need to think about how you can still apply Spanish in life so that there is more motivation to learn
- Set a specific goal within 3 months. If the goal is large, for example, for a year, then decompose it.
For example, goals for the year might look like this: I can read 2 books in Spanish, I can use 8 tenses, I can keep up a conversation with the teacher on everyday topics, I can watch a movie in Spanish without Russian subtitles.
- The goal must be measurable. We can measure the result in numbers, so write down the goals in this way:
For example, by the end of 2023, I learned 600 new words, studied 30 hours, watched 5 videos in Spanish, went through 10 grammar topics and 15 vocabulary topics (specify the topics).
- Your goal should contain positive words, without the “not” particles. This is necessary so that negative associations do not arise.
For example, “I won’t take too long to answer when the teacher asks me a question.” Instead, “I respond quickly, even if I use simple structures and words first.”
- The target must be written in the present tense. This is necessary so that the brain gets used to the fact that this is not some kind of distant goal, but very achievable.

Don’t forget to thank and praise yourself for your efforts with each new result, even if it seems insignificant.

This action is called positive reinforcement. This is what leads to an increase in the likelihood of this act occurring in the future. Reinforcement should occur exactly at the same moment as the desired action itself, or immediately after it – the main thing is that in the head these two moments are connected into one whole.
Now let’s give an example of 2 goals. One is correct, the other is incorrect. Guess which is which:
1 – I want to speak Spanish because my boyfriend is Spanish
2 – 05/20/23 I speak Spanish with confidence with my boyfriend’s parents. My vocabulary is over 4,000 words, I build sentences with ease, and my basic grammar is worked out to automatism. I have moved to level B1, I spend 20 minutes every day repeating words in the Escuela app. Every week I communicate with native speakers for more than 1 hour, I feel that Spanish gives me an impetus to develop in my personal life.

II Spend n minutes a day in Spanish at leisure
How much time do you spend on Spanish per day? The question is moot. Everyone has their own answer and their own possibilities. In general, it is recommended to allocate at least 20 minutes a day, and a good result is achieved with 2-3 hours a day, and more. The format of the study may be different. CHANGE THE LANGUAGE IN THE PHONE . If you see an unfamiliar word on your phone, then most likely you often see it in Russian and immediately understand the meaning. This way you will understand the meaning of words in context.
MUSIC . Get in touch with Spanish-speaking culture while reading the lyrics. So you can remember the common words, and “be in the subject.” Have you already listened to Shakira’s tracks in Spanish? If not, then move on.
Important : you cannot select only one leisure format, for example, listen to music. Everything needs to be combined. So you will pump the language in a complex way.
It is worth mentioning that during the training you need to correctly place the emphasis on which skill you want to develop. If it’s speaking, then you don’t have to write 5 essays and stories a week, but if it’s vocabulary, then you need to spend more time consuming content to look for new words and practice them in applications.
III Learning words visually

V Start talking right away
Don’t wait until you have a “base” of 100-200 commonly used words in Spanish. Start talking from the very beginning, in the first lesson. Start by saying the words after the teacher, then the phrases. Next, try to build phrases on your own. Write short stories of 5-10 sentences.

For the past 6 months I have been learning Spanish at Planeta Español, motivated by the desire to speak the world’s second most spoken language. It was a big challenge for me… at my age and with my busy schedule
There is some success and progress, which I am extremely happy about. The method by which I study the language at Planeta Español is quite flexible. It helps to consider each element of the language from different angles. Umberto and I start every lesson from scratch. We have a very lively communication: we read and write, make presentations, and, of course, listen to music. The learning process is very exciting.
Unfortunately, with my busy schedule, I can’t study the language more than 2 times a week. But I console myself with the fact that this is enough, I have nowhere to hurry. Very soon I will reach my goal and be able to speak and understand Spanish quite tolerably.
There were many doubts at the beginning: the language was new and complex, as it seemed to me… there were fears and doubts. But they immediately dissipated, after 2-3 lessons, because the structure of the language is quite predictable. Yes, you need to study, cram, but this applies to any subject, any language. I began to understand a lot, my vocabulary grows by 20-30 words with each lesson and they are remembered.
Love for language deepens, becomes saturated, becomes conscious. If you have the desire and time, the desire and motivation to learn a language, then I would say: it will not work better than in Planeta Español with teacher Umberto. Is it possible to come somewhere in Uruguay, live there for 2 years and learn the language. If you do not have this option, then only in Planeta Español with Umberto!

Being a native speaker of Spanish, having an excellent education and extensive teaching experience with excellent knowledge of the Russian language, allows you to learn Spanish in a comfortable, accessible and understandable way. In addition, Umberto Osorio is the author of textbooks with theory, practice and even keys to exercises for independent work. In fact, these textbooks can be used for self-study, but, of course, it is better to study phonetics with a native Spanish speaker, for which special thanks to Umberto, for his patience and inexhaustible energy from lesson to lesson to correct my pronunciation.
At the very beginning of our classes, the goal was to speak only Spanish in the lessons.
