Hotel Colon was built in 1951 by the Italian Don Antonio Lemparo. At that time, there were few hotels in Barcelona, and according to the legend, Lemparo had a dream to build a hotel only because he, having somehow arrived in Barcelona, could not get into his favorite hotel because there were no free places.
The small number of hotels in those days meant that Don Lemparo was free to build a hotel in such a beautiful location – right in front of the cathedral in the heart of the Gothic quarter. This is what makes the hotel so unique. In addition, a large number of rooms overlook the cathedral.

The Colon Hotel has an air of old-fashioned chic, a sedate elegance that has attracted quite a few celebrities to its walls over the years.
The list is long and includes such names as Joan Miro, Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Stephen King, Sofia Loren and Francis Ford Coppola.

The Colon Hotel has 145 air-conditioned rooms with bathrobes and slippers, hairdryers, satellite TV, safe, mini-bar and internet. Single rooms have an area of 19 sq.m. and are located in the inner part of the building, so there is no fantastic view from their windows, although the room will be quiet and calm. Double rooms have an area of 26 sq.m., and rooms with a view of the cathedral – 27 sq.m.

The hotel also has 2 conference rooms. The Marina room can accommodate up to 150 people and the Miró room up to 60. The rooms can be rented for all kinds of events, including weddings.
The restaurant attached to the hotel is called Carabela and serves Catalan and world cuisine at a hefty price.
However, you can always take a cup of coffee and sit on the open terrace, in the shade of the cathedral, watching the people scurrying past.

The main thing about the Colon Hotel is location, location and again location. The Cathedral itself is an impressive sight, but there is still a lot of interesting things in its vicinity. If you are interested in art, you can go to the Museo Diocesa, which is located on the other side of the cathedral. In Museo Diocesa – there is a free gallery where exhibitions of works by local and foreign masters are held. And most importantly, all these works, from photographs to oil paintings, can be bought at affordable prices. Leave the hotel and in 5 minutes you will reach the Dali Museum, on Calle Arcs, 5. The museum also has a sunny outdoor terrace where you can have a wonderful lunch or coffee.
Walk past the Dalí Museum and you’ll come to Calle Portal de L’Angel, home to some of the best shopping in Barcelona. This street also leads to Plaça de Catalunya. From Plaça Catalunya, you can walk along Barcelona’s Champs-Elysées, Passeig de Gràcia, where Gaudí’s fantastic buildings, La Pedrera and Casa Batlló are located.
If you like the hustle and bustle of La Rambla, walk down Calle Portaferrissa and you’ll be there in 7 minutes.
At the exit of the hotel, turn left and you will come to Via Laietana, along which you can walk to the embankment in 15 minutes. Or take Via Argenteria and you’ll find yourself in El Borne, one of the hippest neighborhoods with great bars and the best pizzeria in Barcelona, Pizza del Borne.

The Hotel Colon puts you in the heart of Barcelona’s historic district. During the day, stroll through the charming streets behind the cathedral and if you’re lucky, you’ll see a busker who sings Ave Maria so beautifully that you’ll get goosebumps.
A market is also sometimes held on Avenida Catedral, an ideal place to buy gifts. At night, head to Plaça Reial, which is a 10-minute walk away and is full of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Or head to the El Borne area, where you can blend in with the stylish bar patrons. I advise you to go to Miramelinda if you want to drink a good mojito.
Colon is a luxurious and elegant hotel, but when there are so many interesting things around, why are you sitting there!
