Pros:The beauty and innovation of this redesigned enormous building in the heart of the Main Street in Barcelona is unbelievable. Walking in to the lobby from Las Ramblas was breathtaking in chic comfortable design and comfort; quite the turnaround from walking through the gothic quarter. The rooms with their automated switches, built in audio and mood lighting, and details such as a custom pillow bar to select from added to the already striking rooms and beautiful bathrooms. Everything in the rooms made a nights stay in the town more difficult to actually go to town. Past the rooms and lobby, the dining and bar was great, not even considering the rooftop restaurant with a pool and lounge area also for guests. Did I Mention the Romanesque bath spa downstairs? Not a bad feature for a beautiful place to be able to check out, do more sightseeing, and then come back to relax in before grabbing bags. The staff was beyond friendly. Thank you to the doormen for keeping our luggage and even holding the rental bikes while that stores staff was on siesta. I will be back.

You will love or hate the location depending how you feel about being in the very centre of things. The hotel is smack bang on La Rambla, a minute’s walk from the Plaça Catalunya, which is something of a walking and transport hub for the whole city. In other words, it could not be more convenient, but (and it’s a fairly big but) in holiday season La Rambla can be a hell of other people.

In a refreshing departure from the minimalism favoured by most hotels of this level, the Hotel 1898 nods to its history as the headquarters of the Philippine Tobacco Company with a colonial look and bold candy stripes reminiscent of a Tim Burton film set. It retains an air of elegance, however, particularly in its large lobby, dotted with comfortable Chesterfields and lined with wood-panelling. Even the first-floor business centre has a stately feel.

In the summer months, the roof is the place to be, with a wonderful alfresco bar, plenty of sofas and a pool that is small but swimmable. For the colder seasons there is an indoor pool, and there is also a spa and a very well-equipped gym. In the evening they show classic movies in the lobby (or on the roof when the weather allows), and there are computers and printers for guests’ use, as well as a small library. Special mention goes to the staff on reception, who could not be more accommodating. In quiet periods they are especially flexible with late check-outs.

The bedrooms are lively with dark green or candy-striped wallpaper and bedspreads, the colour depending on the floor – red and white; blue and white or green and white. The smaller, cheaper rooms face into an interior patio painted a deep shade of red, while rooms in the next level up look over La Rambla. Some rooms have their own private terrace. Bathrooms have Etro toiletries, and more expensive rooms come with tea- and coffee-making facilities (though they will be provided free of charge to those who ask).

The smart cocktail bar in the lobby is one of the best places along the Rambla for a nightcap, with plenty of deep sofas and live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. From 5pm-7pm free afternoon tea – with delicate sandwiches and petit fours – is offered to clients.

On the first floor is the El Nido restaurant, offering Mediterranean-fusion food that might include crispy prawns with tamarind dip or swordfish ceviche. Most notable, however, is the luxurious breakfast spread, which includes everything you’d expect to find (eggs cooked to order, sausages, beans, a salad and fruit counter, cereals and a selection of breads and pastries) with plenty you wouldn’t (a table groaning with local cheeses, an entire leg of ham and a dazzling patisserie selection). Tapas and light snacks can also be ordered in the lobby or on the rooftop.
