Key areas of the hospital
Barcelona Clinical Hospital (Spain), with dozens of departments and specialized institutes, offers professional medical care in almost all areas of modern medicine. Her most advanced fields of activity are:
Oncology and Hematology . The Institute of Hematology and Oncology of the Barcelona Clinic, which is considered the best in the country, is engaged in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of various blood diseases and malignant tumors. It consists of three divisions: Therapeutic Oncology, Hematology and Radiation Therapy. It also includes a department of supportive and palliative care, which provides care for patients with any stage of cancer, from initial to advanced. Here they treat complications of oncological diseases and deal with the elimination of severe symptoms, provide psychological support and professional care for terminally ill patients.
Spanish oncologists are trying not only to save the patient from cancer, but also to maintain an acceptable quality of life for him, therefore, preference is given not only to effective, but also to the most sparing methods. For example, they perform surgical removal of tumors using minimally invasive techniques that are characterized by minimal trauma, a reduced risk of postoperative complications, and do not require long-term recovery. And chemotherapy is carried out with new-generation drugs that have a targeted effect, and, therefore, are less toxic to healthy cells.
High results in the treatment of various forms of cancer are achieved by the specialists of the Clinical Hospital of Barcelona, among other things, thanks to close cooperation with doctors from other specialties. Treatment planning is carried out by a multidisciplinary team, which develops its optimal strategy, taking into account the main characteristics of the tumor and the individual characteristics of the patient.
Cardiology and cardiovascular surgery . This department provides assistance to patients with diseases of the cardiovascular system: coronary heart disease, arrhythmias, congenital and acquired heart defects, chronic heart failure. Experienced cardiac surgeons of the clinic, using modern minimally invasive techniques, perform coronary artery bypass grafting and angioplasty, replace and reconstruct heart valves, perform surgical treatment of aortic aneurysm and atrial fibrillation, install pacemakers.
Transplantology . One of the most advanced departments of the Barcelona clinic. During its existence, more than one and a half thousand operations for transplanting donor hearts, lungs, liver and kidneys have been performed here – with the best survival rates and minimal complications. In most of these cases, transplantation was the only way to save a person’s life.
The department’s specialists were the first in Southern Europe to perform a kidney transplant using the NOTES surgical technique, which involves the removal of a tumor-affected organ through the natural openings of the body.
Orthopedics and rheumatology . Here, patients suffering from pain and functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including fibromyalgia and rheumatism, receive quality medical care. In addition, the doctors of the department perform surgical treatment of arthritis of the fingers, prosthetics of the hip and knee joints, treat protrusions and hernias of the intervertebral disc, scoliosis, and bone metabolism disorders.
Obstetrics and gynecology . The medical center diagnoses and treats a wide range of diseases of the female reproductive system, performs artificial insemination, observes women during pregnancy and conducts prenatal diagnostics.
Gastroenterology . As part of the Barcelona Clinical Hospital, there is a specialized institute for the study and treatment of diseases of the digestive system and metabolic disorders, including the departments of gastroenterology, hepatology, digestive surgery and endocrinology. Patients with cirrhosis of the liver, diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel disease, viral hepatitis, morbid obesity, and thyroid diseases are referred here.
