Montjuïc Singing Fountains in Barcelona
If you are in Barcelona, be sure to include the famous singing fountains of Montjuïc in your tour program.
In fact, this is one large fountain, which consists of many small fountains and covers an area of up to 3 thousand square meters near the National Palace of Barcelona.
The giant is located on the hill of Montjuic, which is why it got its name. However, for some reason it did not take root among Barcelona residents. The local population calls the landmark “fuente mahika”, which translates as “magic fountain”. Indeed, the combination of water, music and lighting in the evening creates an atmosphere of magic around it.
The fountain was built very quickly: it was built in one year (from 1928 to 1929) according to the design of the Catalan engineer Carlos Buigas. Jets of water, which, by the way, are 3,620 here, can rise into the air to a height of up to 50 meters. True, the “singing” fountain became only quite recently, when in 1992 it was modernized in connection with the upcoming Olympics in Barcelona. So the fountain of Montjuic became the first fountain in the world where water, music and light are simultaneously involved.
During the day, the fountain operates as usual, but the “dance” of water to the music and accompanied by a light show can only be watched in the evening. The first part of the program, as a rule, is accompanied by classics, while in the second part the fountain “performs” to world pop hits. That’s very beautiful! And, more importantly, it’s completely free.
In the spring (March 9 – April 30) performances start at 19:00 (Fri – Sun), and the high season (May 1 – September 30) starts at 21:00 (Thu – Sun). The action consists of 5 parts, lasting half an hour each.
A truly amazing sight! The jets either fly high into the air, or turn into small fountains, or dissipate in fog in multi-colored illumination . .. All this happens thanks to 5 pumps capable of supplying 26 tons of liters of water per second. But you don’t think about it at all, standing near the magic fountain.
When the splashes of water gently touch the skin, you want to stop taking pictures, turn off the camera and enjoy the spectacle in peace for at least a couple of minutes. Yes, the Montjuic Fountain is that rare case when a person managed to create something truly inspiring and magical.
How to get there?
Getting to the singing fountains is quite easy. Not far from the attraction there is a stop of the España metro (green line L3 or red L1). When exiting the metro, you should be guided by two large red-brown columns. It is behind them that the famous fountain of Montjuic is located. The way to the giant fountain will be indicated by mini-fountains surrounded by greenery. Walk along them towards the National Palace – and you will reach the goal.
Also buses No. 13, 27, 37, 55, 56, 57, 109, 157, 165 go to the sights. The exact address of the magic fountain: Pl Carles Buigas, 1.
There is another way to get there to the magical fountain. During the summer, a bus company Barcelona Bus Turístic runs around Barcelona at night. He makes a circle around the tourist part of the city, making one stop at the singing fountains of Montjuic.
The time allotted for watching the water show is enough to enjoy the show, take pictures and even make a video.
Please note that the hop-on-hop-off bus operates at night with different rules: it offers a one-time tour, so if you missed it after watching the water-light-music show, the next won’t come anymore. For the same reason, it is recommended to buy tickets in advance, because there are a lot of people who want to admire Barcelona at night, and even more so get to the singing fountains, and there is only one flight.
