On the portal you can find very tempting offers for renting an apartment, with beautiful furniture and at a very affordable price, rather suspiciously affordable. As an experiment, we tried to ask for more information on one such ad, filled out a contact form asking the owner to contact him as soon as possible. 2-room apartment in the Sant Antoni area, in Barcelona, ​​for only 600 euros. To date, this can only be heard in the stories of friends of friends. To dispel doubts, we contacted the owner. After filling out the form, you will receive a message on your mobile phone asking you to contact by e-mail.

The most interesting thing starts in the correspondence. A long story that he wants to rent an apartment to respectable people, but that’s bad luck, he himself will not be able to show the apartment to you, since he is away. If earlier such scammers asked to transfer the amount of rent and a deposit to a bank account, and “sent” their family lawyer or relatives/friends as a proxy, now there are cases when scammers fake pages of online platforms with an international name, such as Airbnb, HomeAway. If you agree, before sending you a link to an ad posted on such a platform, the scammer will ask for the exact dates of your stay and send you a sample contract. While you are studying the contract, the “owner” of the apartment and his assistants will design a fake page with the dates of your arrival. After that, you will receive a link that, although it contains the word HomeAway in the title, looks suspicious.

In general, the fake site is very similar to the official one, but there are a few key points that the scammer did not take into account. See, compare and be careful when searching and booking apartments. On the official website, when choosing a language, the checkbox and the country code for the phone automatically change. On the page of the fraudulent site, all the information is in English, but the flag is Spanish. Similar blunders, as a rule, are the result of haste and illiteracy in page layout.

The next difference that catches the eye is the lack of active links. On the official site you will find many links to other pages of the site: Private Policy, Terms and Conditions, View More, Help. All of these links are active.

Another of the main points. When filling in contact information during the booking process, above the window with booking details there is a booking number and a phone number by which you can contact the company’s support service. It’s called booking assistance. The fake site, in this case, gives only the booking number, with no options to contact anyone else.

The social network icons on the scam site are present in conjunction with the “Share post” function, but they are inactive. The official site allows you to share the recording, the method options are hidden under the Share button.

People often trust reviews on a website. The scammers took that into account as well. The page with reviews looks almost identical to the page of the official website of the company.

Also, in practice, there are cases when tourists with suitcases ring the door at houses rented on popular sites, confirming the reservation and a receipt for paying for the accommodation for this house. Often these are families with children who fly in to spend their holidays on the wonderful Spanish coast. The photo, description and address of the ad exactly match the specific house. Only the owners know nothing about it. Caught in a ridiculous situation, both sides call the police. As a result of the proceedings, tourists have to urgently look for a new accommodation and forget about the reservation made. Unpleasant incidents happen quite often, sometimes the same house is visited by several deceived tourists during the season. As a rule, the cost paid to scammers is noticeably underestimated in relation to the real or market value, you should pay attention to this when choosing an option for a short-term lease.

On any suspicion, open a search engine, find out as much information as possible about the site that is provided to you under the popular booking platform. When communicating with the owner of the property, ask for data confirming the right to property. If the property is managed by an agency, make sure that it is legally operating on the market. If the property is presented by a freelancer, you should ask for documentary evidence of the rights on which he works with the object you are interested in.
