Inside Sagrada Familia – interiors of Gaudi’s Barcelona Church

4. 7

(164)

Some of the five million-plus tourists who visit Sagrada Familia every year go back without getting inside Gaudi’s church in Barcelona.

The more thoughtful tourists go inside Sagrada Familia and enjoy the interiors of Gaudi’s masterpiece.

The interior of Sagrada Familia is a stunning blend of art and architecture.

Many tourists ask, “Is it worth buying a ticket and going inside Sagrada Familia?”

The short answer is “Yes,” you must check out Sagrada Familia’s interiors. For the long answer, continue reading.

About Sagrada Familia

Antoni Gaudí was a genius. Modern architects considered his methods revolutionary a century after he used them.

He used his buildings to communicate the Christian belief and message of the Evangelists.

However, you don’t need to be a believer to appreciate Sagrada Familia from the outside and inside.

Sagrada Familia has 18 towers, each of which has a special significance.

The tower dedicated to Jesus Christ is in the middle, and four towers representing the Gospels surround it.

The tower above the apse, which has a star, represents the Virgin Mary.

The remaining 12 towers represent the 12 Apostles, who carried on Jesus’ work.

All these towers and the rest of the building make three facades – the Nativity Facade, the Passion Facade, and the Glory Facade.

The nativity facade is about Jesus’ birth, the Passion facade is about his suffering and death, and the Glory facade (which is yet to be completed) is about his resurrection and glory.

When you buy Sagrada Familia tickets, you can see all this by just walking around the church.

Some visitors do just that – they don’t go inside Sagrada Familia to see the interiors.

Some visitors go the full distance – they walk around the Basilica, step inside to appreciate the interiors, and go up one of the Sagrada Familia towers.

Inside Sagrada Familia

Pope Benedict XVI consecrated Antoni Gaudi’s masterpiece in 2010.

After that, the church began international and special masses and allowed the tourists inside.

Sagrada Familia Basilica was now more than just an architectural stop for tourists.

Now tourists were lining up in droves to go inside Sagrada Familia and appreciate its interiors.

Interestingly, even though Pope Benedict XVI announced it as a Basilica, most people still refer to it as Sagrada Familia Cathedral.

Lights and colors inside Sagrada Familia

Antoni Gaudi has always loved playing with lights and colors.

One of the best parts about Sagrada Familia interiors is watching the sunlight seep through the stained glass.

It is harmonious with the rest of the structure and accentuates the intricate detailing inside the church.

With the branching columns heading for the sky and the rays of light falling on you, it feels like you are in a forest.

Most tourists feel that they are standing in a jungle full of trees with the sun’s rays trying to reach them.

With no lines and no flat surfaces, the designs inside the church are comprehensive and rich.

You won’t repent your decision to step inside Sagrada Familia.

As for why we think going inside Sagrada Familia is worth it, check out our reasons below –

1.

The entry tickets are cheap

The Sagrada Familia Fast Track ticket costs €34 for adults aged 30 to 64, and for youth aged 11 to 29 years and students with valid IDs, it is priced at €31.

The tickets for seniors 65 years and above cost €27, while kids below ten years walk in for free.

This ticket price also includes the audio guide.

In short, you get to see 130 years of Gaudi’s work in less than 35 Euros.

More than 90% of the visitors to Sagrada Familia opt for Fast Track tickets – the cheapest and the most popular.

This ticket money goes in as your contribution to building Europe’s largest Church. Don’t you want that bragging, right?

2. It is a Spanish thing!

Every city has one identifier attached to its personality. London has the London Eye, Paris has the Eiffel Tower, and New York has the Statue of Liberty.

Similarly, Barcelona in Spain has Sagrada Familia.

How can you plan a holiday in Barcelona without going inside Sagrada Familia?

Most visitors also visit Park Guell on the same day. Find out the fastest way to go from Sagrada Familia to Park Guell or from Park Guell to Sagrada Familia.

3. You can avoid the queues

If you do two things, you can avoid the queue at Sagrada Familia, making it a quick trip.

First, find out the best time to visit Sagrada Familia and buy Sagrada Familia ticket online.

You don’t wait in the serpentine queues outside the ticketing office when you buy your ticket online.

You only have a brief wait at the entry of the Church.

When you don’t waste your time waiting to buy your tickets, what you see inside Sagrada Familia is worth the time spent.

4. It is a great photo opportunity

Image: Yen Baet on Flickr

Sagrada Familia inside is a great photo opportunity because most attractions are above eye level.

Usually, when we visit a crowded tourist spot, it is challenging to take excellent photographs because of all the people who get into the frame.

Inside Sagrada Familia, this doesn’t happen. If you love photography, this is a dream destination.

5. Sagrada Familia is a different church

Some tourists believe if you have seen one church, you have seen all churches.

Please don’t fall into that trap, for Sagrada Familia is as imposing inside as it is outside.

Most churches are dark and cold. Further, traditional churches use dark colors to create a somber mood for worship.

Gaudi decided to do away with this approach and used pale colors accentuated by the sun’s rays, getting in through the stained glasses.

6. It doesn’t take long

You can enjoy the Sagrada Familia’s interior in less than an hour.

You can combine your trip inside Sagrada Familia with your visit to the Nativity tower or Passion tower. In which case you will need half an hour more.

To go up the Towers, you need to buy Sagrada Familia Tower tickets.

Most visitors also walk around the Basilica, which usually takes 45 minutes.

Not sure if you should go up the Towers? Check out our article on whether Sagrada Familia towers are worth it.

Sagrada Familia in Barcelona (Sagrada Familia)

One of the most famous and beautiful sights of Barcelona is the Sagrada Familia (Sagrada Familia). This majestic, unique building is a kind of bridge between eras, which combines the neo-Gothic and unique author’s style of Antonio Gaudi. The creation of this church, which is more like a sand castle, is still not finished.

The history of the creation of the temple

Sagrada Família (Sagrada Família) has become the main symbol of Barcelona, unique and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. It has been under construction for 134 years. It is worth not only taking a picture against the backdrop of a unique building, but also going inside to fully appreciate the beauty of the author’s idea.

You have to be prepared to stand in a rather long line, but if you don’t plan to return to Barcelona soon for a more detailed tour, it’s worth it.

It turns out that the first architect who started building the temple was Francisco del Villar. He planned to build a neo-Gothic basilica in the shape of a Latin cross, which is in line with the ideas of a classical Christian church. But they were only the beginning of construction. The church council did not like the idea of Francisco del Villar and Antonio Gaudi, a follower of the architect, set to work.

There is even a legend according to which del Villar dreamed that a blue-eyed youth would finish building the temple. They turned out to be Gaudi.

Gaudi decided to continue building the temple according to his vision, forgetting about the original plan. He lived in this temple, often collecting money for construction from parishioners himself, sometimes he worked without drawings and diagrams, coming up with ideas on the go. So, it used to be necessary to destroy what had already been built and create everything anew.

The land on which the construction of the Cathedral began was purchased with donations from local residents. Previously, this part of the current Barcelona was outside the city.

According to Gaudí’s plan Sagrada Familia was intended not only to mediate between heaven and earth, but also as a battlefield for human feelings. That is why the architect spared neither effort nor time, working daily to create this work of art.

The great architect was devout and wanted the temple to embody the modern vision of the New Testament. It was thought that each grain of sand would tell stories from the Bible and not be accidental.

Antonio Gaudi built the temple for 42 years and he managed to realize only a third of what he had planned. He understood that he would not have time to complete it, so he began to work on the internal appearance.

Many at that time were sure that the Sagrada Familia would collapse due to unconventional architectural solutions. However, now experts say that the temple can withstand even an earthquake.

Architecture, internal and external appearance of the temple

To copy the creations of the Lord was for Gaudi the highest form of praise of the Creator, since the architect was a believer, he considered it a great honor. Initially, he planned to build three facades: the Nativity, the Passion and the Resurrection of Christ, but under the control of the architect himself, only the facade of the Nativity, decorated with sculptures of animals and representatives of nature, was erected.

Nativity Facade

Passion Facade

A grandiose complex, four spiers, 12 peaks located on them, as planned, should symbolize the number of apostles, all this is the idea of a man who did not leave work on the temple until the end of his days .

Temple towers

Gaudí decided that the Sagrada Familia would include 18 towers. The largest tower (170 meters) was supposed to symbolize Christ and be in the center of the structure, another one was created in honor of the Mother of God.

4 towers were created in honor of the evangelists and the remaining 12 represent the apostles. It should be noted that the tower in honor of Christ has not yet been built.

The use of Art Nouveau can be traced in the external arrangement of the cathedral. Every detail of the facade is a small life, history, displayed as realistically as possible.

Gaudi responsibly approached the creation of each of the elements. For example, to make a scene of beating babies, he used casts of children who were born dead. And to make casts of animals, he euthanized animals with chloroform.

After Antonio Gaudí died, they began to think whether it was worth continuing the construction, since it seemed impossible to repeat the author’s style. But the construction was continued by Domenech Surganes, Gaudí’s assistant. However, in 1936, a civil war broke out, and the construction of the temple was suspended.

After that, a fire broke out, destroying all the drawings of the great architect, which were kept inside the temple.

The inner majesty of the halls of the cathedral, the interior, the contrast of frescoes and mosaics, sculptures, all this captivates the eye, attracting the attention of tourists and history buffs.

The many details of the interior design are an excellent example of the use of baroque architecture in the Sagrada Familia.

Probably the most important style that Gaudí could use in the creation of the cathedral is, of course, his own, extraordinary style, which glorified the architect earlier.

Sagrada Familia today

However, despite all the obstacles in the work, today the creation of the Sagrada Familia continues. At the beginning of this century, the construction of the facade of Glory began, and the creation of the tower of Christ and the tower of Our Lady also began. Construction is expected to be completed by 2026.
In 2010, the church was consecrated by the Pope, which gave grounds for the permission to worship.

Sagrada Familia in Barcelona

The Sagrada Familia is one of the most amazing buildings that exist in the world today. It is located near the very center of Barcelona and, for various reasons, attracts crowds of tourists every year. Sagrada de Familia is an unsurpassed creation of the great Antonio Gaudí. The peculiarity of the building is also that its construction, which has been going on for 120 years, is still not completed. Although the famous architect left this world and did not leave the slightest hint in the form of any instructions or drawings, according to which it would be possible to continue the construction of this cathedral in Barcelona.

Sagrada de Familia is not the only name that refers to the temple. You can often hear such names as the Expiatory Church of the Holy Family or the Church of the Holy Family. But whatever name this amazing building has, it is unique in nature. No one has been able to surpass Gaudi and bring something like this to life, because his creative approach is so original that none of the buildings created according to his project is similar to any other. During his life, the architect managed to carefully study different directions and styles, taking note of only what he liked the most. His ideas are a combination of Gothic, Art Nouveau and even Moorish style. And most often, his next masterpiece could not be attributed to any particular style, which made Gaudí’s creations something special and incomparable.

Life of a great architect closely connected with the cathedral amilia begins as early as 1883. And at that time, it was still in no way connected with the name of the great architect Gaudi, because initially Francisco de Villar was supposed to be involved in the creation of the temple. His plans included the creation of a cathedral that would fully comply with all the canons of the neo-Gothic style. But already in 1891, precisely at the time when the construction was just unfolding, Antonio Gaudi came to replace him and devoted 43 whole years of his life to this great cathedral in Barcelona. He did not leave construction even in the very last days of his life. Although it was originally planned to use the Neo-Gothic style, Gaudí decided to use Gothic only at the very base, and embodied this idea in the drawing, where the building had the shape of a Latin cross. Everything but that was Gaudí’s exceptional and unlike anything else.

He never thought through all the details in advance, drawing only the most important. But the details themselves arose during the construction process. That is why the architect was always within the construction site, where he could create something new, give the necessary orders and evaluate the results. For the same reason, over time, he had his own small room inside the Sagrada Familia, where he settled and fully supervised the process of creating the temple.

It could hardly be said that the construction proceeded easily, much less quickly. The indefatigable architect was constantly overwhelmed by new ideas, which is why often the builders had to make changes or even completely destroy what had already been created. No less surprising was this process for the inhabitants of the city, who could observe how something unusual and great appeared here. To some, the building looked like an anthill, and someone stated that it was nothing more than stalagmites (stone outgrowths in caves). Everyone saw the cathedral differently.

The further the construction progressed, the more Gaudí devoted his time to it. Having become a hermit living inside the Sagrada Familia, he only occasionally went out to people and held out his hat in his hand, collecting money for the further construction of this temple. Unfortunately, this was the only source of funding for this great masterpiece at that time. All this continued until 1926. This year was tragic, both for the architect, who was hit by a tram, and for the cathedral, the construction of which simply stopped for a while. Gaudi was buried on the territory of his unfinished creation, and numerous disputes began to be waged around the further construction of the cathedral. The situation was further complicated by the absence of any ideas of architects that would be captured on paper. All great ideas have gone with the author.

Sagrada Familia today and Familia, then, according to the idea of Gaudi, it was a building with three facades, on which there were four fairly high spiers. It is also interesting that their outlines should be curvilinear.

As a result, the top of the building would have received 12 towers, in which a great meaning was invested – after all, that was how many disciples Jesus had. In the center, a place was allotted for the largest tower – the symbol of Christ himself. It would be supplemented by 4 more towers, but of a smaller size – the same number of Evangelists according to the Bible. At the same time, the tower of Christ was supposed to be decorated with a cross, but the towers of the Evangelists – with their corresponding symbols – a lion, a calf, an angel and an eagle. In this building, Gaudi also did not lose respect for the Virgin Mary, whose image was supposed to be conveyed by a small bell tower.

Unfortunately, the Sagrada de Familia of Gaudí’s entire plan received during the life of the architect only a part dedicated to Christmas. That is how the author called one of the future facades of the building, the second and third were called “The Passion of Christ” and “Ascension”.

Inside the Sagrada Familia displays the main ideas of the architect – a simple design and geometric shapes in the form of an ellipse, helicoid, conoid, etc. Their intersection forms even simpler solutions – straight lines. The entire interior decoration is decorated with stucco, paintings, mosaics and frescoes, which strictly comply with all the laws of geometry.
