Children and young people

There are no specific requirements for children and young people.

If you’re transiting through Hungary

Transiting is when you pass through one country on the way to your final destination.

Check with your airline before departing.

Exemptions

Check your passport and travel documents before you travel

If you are visiting Hungary, your passport should be valid for at least 3 months from the date you arrive.

If you are a resident in Hungary, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months from the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements.

Passport validity

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements.

Your passport must be:

  • issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

Contact the embassy of the country you are visiting if you think that your passport does not meet both these requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

Visas

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel as a tourist, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events, or for short-term studies or training.

If you are travelling to Hungary and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

To stay longer, to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons, you will need to meet the Hungarian government’s entry requirements. Check with the Hungarian Embassy what type of visa and/or work permit you may need.

If you are travelling to Hungary for work, read the guidance on visas and permits.

If you stay in Hungary with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Passport stamping

Check your passport is stamped if you enter or exit the Schengen area through Hungary as a visitor. Border guards will use passport stamps to check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit for short stays in the Schengen area. If relevant entry or exit stamps are not in your passport, border guards will presume that you have overstayed your visa-free limit.

You can show evidence of when and where you entered or exited the Schengen area, and ask the border guards to add this date and location in your passport. Examples of acceptable evidence include boarding passes and tickets.

You may also need to:

  • show a return or onward ticket
  • show you have enough money for your stay

If you are resident in Hungary, read our Living in Hungary guide for passport stamping information.

Fines

Entry into Hungary can be barred if you have failed to pay a previous fine in Hungary. Contact the Hungarian Embassy in London for guidance on paying any outstanding fines before you next enter Hungary.

This means that no customs procedures are required for exporting goods from Hungary to another EU member state and/or for importing goods from a member state to Hungary. The export and import of goods purchased for non-commercial purposes (for personal use or as gifts) while travelling is not restricted, however, the transport of certain goods (such as: pets, hunting weapons, alcohol and tobacco products, medicines containing drugs, etc.) within the European Union is restricted or subject to special permissions.

Entry to Hungary for Russians in 2023 – “Single Visa Application Center”.

The Republic of Hungary is one of the most picturesque countries in Eastern Europe, attracting thousands of tourists at any time of the year. Ancient castles, classical architecture of cozy cities, numerous lakes and national parks of the Carpathian Mountains create the conditions for an unforgettable, emotional vacation.

Since 2020, visiting this country for Russian tourists has been limited due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year, the situation in the world has stabilized and many states have begun to relax the quarantine regime, including Hungary. Russian tourists had a chance to visit a hospitable country, but in the spring the deterioration of the political situation in the world led to the cessation of air traffic between our countries.

This fact still does not exclude the possibility of tourist travel to the country, but you will have to think about finding alternative ways to fly and comply with anti-COVID restrictions that are still relevant for this region.

Visiting the Republic of Hungary during the pandemic

Like other European countries, it is easiest for vaccinated Russian citizens to visit Hungary during the pandemic. At the same time, the country’s authorities do not limit the list of drugs used as a vaccine – even those that were approved only in Russia will do. As confirmation, the country’s consulate must provide a certificate downloaded from the State Services application or from the official website of the state portal. If the applicant has not completed the vaccination course, then there is the possibility of entry into Hungary for Russians on a certificate of illness or a negative test result for coronavirus.

The certificate of receipt of the vaccine is considered valid for 9 months from the date of receipt of the second dose of the drug. Those who have been ill with an infection can travel without additional tests starting from the 15th day after the diagnosis of the disease and up to 6 months after recovery. Unvaccinated tourists who have not had the disease are required to present a PCR test made 72 hours before arrival in the Republic. The examination results and all references should be translated into English or Hungarian.

The situation in the Republic in connection with the coronavirus infection

Entry into the Republic does not imply the need to comply with the mask regime. Mass events of up to 500 people are allowed in the country, which can be visited without vaccination. Public places are also accessible without special permits, the opening hours of bars, restaurants and cafes have returned to their usual schedule. Sports competitions, concerts involving a large number of participants can be attended if there is a negative test made no later than 72 hours on the date of the event or a certificate of receipt of the vaccine.

Do I need a visa to enter Hungary

Entry to Hungary for Russians now involves the need to pre-apply for a Schengen visa. This document allows a short-term stay in the country for tourism purposes. The maximum duration of the “Schengen” tourist type is 90 days, after which the country must be left. Due to the tense political situation, the Hungarian consulates are limited to issuing single entry permits. This means that it will be possible to cross the border of the Republic only once (to enter and exit).

A tourist permit is issued through the embassy or through consular departments located in major Russian cities. Visa centers also process applications, providing courier delivery of applications, paperwork and consulting support for applicants. To apply for a Schengen visa, you must prepare the required documents and sign up at the consular department or at the visa center at the place of residence.

    Hungarian Parliament Building

The building of the Hungarian Parliament – located in Budapest on the banks of the Danube. Its construction, begun in 1885, lasted almost 20 years. Its architecture intricately combines neo-Gothic and Parisian Beauzare styles with oriental motifs. The parliament building is the largest in Hungary. There are 691 rooms under the dome 27 meters high. The interior is richly decorated with mosaic panels, gilding and stained-glass windows. Tours are organized for tourists.

In accordance with the visa rules for entry into Hungary for Russians in 2023, the following list of documents is required to obtain an entry permit:

    • Foreign passport. The document must be valid for at least 180 days at the time of return from travel. Additionally, a copy of the spread of the passport and pages with previous Schengen visas is provided.
    • Photo 3.5×4.5 cm. The image must comply with the established rules, have a high resolution, optimal clarity, on a white or blue background. Face size – at least 80% of the total area of the image.
    • Application form. It is downloaded on the official website of the embassy, filled out and printed out. Each page of the form must be personally signed.
    • Air tickets with confirmation of booking and payment. Since there are no direct flights to Budapest, it is recommended to prepare an alternative route with transfers at major international airports.
    • Confirmed and paid hotel reservation for the entire stay.
    • Medical insurance. It is recommended to use the services of European companies. The amount of coverage must be at least 30 thousand euros, including the costs of diagnosing and treating coronavirus infection.
    • Financial guarantees. The consulate is provided with a bank statement containing information about the state of the personal account. The funds in the account must be sufficient for the entire requested period of the trip.
    • Certificate from the place of work. The document indicates the date of acceptance of the applicant for the position, salary and specialty.

In accordance with the visa rules for entry into Hungary, additionally foreign tourists must undergo a biometrics procedure. It must be repeated every 5 years for all applicants who have reached the age of 12.

If children are traveling, a separate passport must be issued for them, as well as parental permission to leave if the child is accompanied by one parent or a third person. All documents submitted to the consulate must be translated into Hungarian or English and certified with an apostille.

Consular staff services are paid in cash directly at the office, the fee is 35 euros per applicant, and an additional fee of 17.5 euros per family member (excluding children under 6 years of age and disabled people).

Stay in the resort area requires payment of a special fee – 2 euros per day per person. As a rule, this amount is included in the hotel bill.

How to get to Hungary from Russia

Despite the fact that Hungary is open for tourists from Russia, it is quite difficult to come here directly due to the termination of direct flights between the countries. In order to spend your holidays in this region, you need to consider connecting flights. The most convenient and affordable is a Flydubai flight with one transfer at Dubai Airport.

There are options to fly to the Republic by flights with two transfers at Turkish airports. When transiting through the UAE and Turkey, no additional passes are required. The average flight duration, including transfer time, will take up to 24 hours.

It is worth noting that traveling to Hungary with connecting flights can hardly be called economical, so our compatriots often consider options for moving by rail. Moreover, many trains between Russia and European cities have retained their schedule. You can get to Budapest by the Moscow-Nice train with a change in Vienna. Such a trip will take longer and will be inferior to air travel in terms of comfort, however, this way to get to Eastern Europe is also popular.

What restrictions apply in the Republic

    Buda Castle (Budapest)

Buda Castle (Budapest) is the residence of the kings of Hungary, which is included in the UNESCO heritage list. The oldest part of the palace was built in the 14th century. Over the years of its existence, the fortress has survived several sieges, destruction and reconstruction, which took away many historical architectural delights. The reconstruction of the castle was completed at 1980 year. Among the surviving historical buildings, the Sandor Palace, the house of Hungarian wines, and the Fisherman’s Bastion are distinguished.

Is it possible to go to Hungary now is a topical question for many Russians who have chosen Eastern Europe as their permanent holiday destination. As such, restrictions on the entry of Russian citizens into the Republic were not introduced. This means that our compatriots have the opportunity to organize an independent trip to a picturesque country or book a tour, early booking of which is already available in many travel agencies. When applying for a visa, it is important to take into account the time recommended by the consulate – the trip must take place no later than 3 months from the date of receipt of a positive response from the department.

Like many European countries, Hungary has restricted the operation of Russian payment cards using Visa and Mastercard systems. In this regard, it is recommended to bring cash into the country in the amount of no more than 10 thousand US dollars. You don’t have to declare this currency.

Tourists use the opportunity to pay for the maximum of their needs for a tourist trip in advance, so as not to feel the need for means of payment. Many tour operators undertake to make payments for booking hotels and air tickets, sightseeing and medical tours, so the Russians have to take with them funds for visiting entertainment complexes and buying souvenirs.

    Customs restrictions

When crossing the border, residents of foreign countries undergo customs inspection, during which tourists must declare imported items if they do not fit within the established restrictions. In 2023, duty-free import of the following goods is allowed:

    • 20 packs of cigarettes / 100 small cigars / 50 standard cigars or 250 grams of tobacco.
    • 1 liter of spirits over 22% ABV or 2 liters of spirits not exceeding 22% ABV.
    • 4 liters of grape wine.
    • 16 liters of beer.
    • Products and items valued at or below $430.

If foreign citizens are traveling with a pet, they must present a veterinary passport. The document must contain marks on the health status of the four-legged traveler, as well as vaccinations against rabies. All animals must be microchipped, and the surname and first name of the owner must be indicated in the veterinary passport.

    Visegrad Fortress

Visegrad Fortress – built in the 13th century. In the Middle Ages – the residence of the Hungarian kings. During the invasion of Austrian troops in the 18th century, it was almost completely destroyed. Among the ruins, only the surviving tower of Solomon towered. Reconstruction is currently underway. In the restored walls of the fortress, you can see the interiors of a medieval kitchen and a dining room, a torture chamber has been recreated, and there is a collection of ancient weapons.
