“They are starving.” Why Ukrainian refugees flee from Spain
Thousands of Ukrainian refugees prefer to return home, despite the hostilities, than to live in poverty abroad, the newspaper L’Indépendant reports. In particular, due to low wages and inflation, internally displaced persons are leaving Spain en masse, where they have been living since April.
Flight from Spain
Events in Ukraine have repercussions around the world: tensions with Russia have risen, inflation rates are rising, notes newspaper L’Indépendant. First of all, the conflict “caused an exodus of millions of refugees. ” The publication reported that many refugees arrived in Western Europe: about 100,000 refugees live in France, and 125,000 people live in Spain. According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as of August 9, more than 10.5 million people have crossed the borders of Ukraine since February 24.
The Grayzone: Refugees are kicked out of detention centers in Ukraine after three days
In Ukraine, refugees are evicted from detention centers after staying there for three days…
August 21 00:00
“Thanks to an extraordinary display of solidarity,” millions of lives have been saved, the article says. But the adaptation of the refugees faced difficulties. Now many Ukrainians “prefer to return home.” According to them, the reason for this is low wages and the cost of living, which is “too high.”
“They don’t help us”
“Hello. I am very sorry to write this message, but I am returning to Ukraine. I can’t live here (in Spain), I just work to pay rent and food. I don’t see what I’m earning here. I’m going home, I need money for gas, so I would really appreciate any help” – quotes the words of Yuri Blazhenets, a refugee who has been living in Spain since April, El Periódico de España edition.
So Yuri asked his Spanish friends for help via a WhatsApp message. The authors of the material specified that Yuri is 42 years old. He is a lawyer and “speaks excellent Spanish”, and has become “one of those rare men” who were allowed to leave Ukraine, despite his draft age. Yuri left the country with his wife. But after a few months they return to Kyiv, as “interest in the conflict is waning, and the life of Ukrainian refugees has become more difficult.”
The man told the publication that in April he was placed in a hotel in Madrid and fed free of charge. In return, he was ordered to attend Spanish courses. This angered the man, as he is already fluent in the language and “has a degree.” In Spain, he still had old clients, so instead of studying, he left the city for five days and visited them in the hope of finding a job.
El Pais: Refugees from Ukraine face racism from local authorities and the EU
Foreigners who travel to the EU from Ukraine face racism…
August 19 17:57
When he returned, he was surprised to find that there was no more room for him in the inn. It turned out that he was excluded from the Red Cross program to support internally displaced persons due to being absent from the room for more than three days.
Now Yury and his wife pay for rooms and hotel rooms on their own, sometimes a friend of the spouses allows them to stay with him.
“I came to Spain in my car. Now I have to register it here, otherwise I will be fined. Since the car is less than a year old, the cost of re-registration is more than 5,000 euros. But they don’t help us with expenses. Those who have to learn Spanish from scratch are given lessons, and those of us who already know the language are kicked out of the program, ”the man complained.
“They offer only unreliable jobs”
“All over Spain there are Ukrainian families who came to escape the war and leave here to escape inflation and the uncertain economic situation. The main argument they put forward is that the job market only offers them precarious jobs and they have to put their entire salary into expenses. In addition, some of them were excluded from the refugee admission program launched by the Ministry of Integration and administered by the Red Cross,” the article says.
The Independent: Great Britain demands to increase the allowance for the maintenance of Ukrainian refugees
Thousands of Ukrainian refugees who were sheltered by residents of the UK may remain on the street, as they …
18 August 10:40
Another Ukrainian, Katya Galushka, will return to Kyiv with her six-year-old daughter at the end of August. Their relatives still live in the capital of Ukraine, and Katya has no job in Madrid, no one helps the woman, except for her friends who let her stay for the night.
“Ever since I arrived, I have been trying to learn Spanish. I was looking for a job, but I only received occasional phone calls from a shop that paid 40 euros a day,” said El Periódico de España refugee.
At first, she and her daughter, like Yuri, were helped under the Red Cross program. In search of work, the woman was forced to leave her daughter with a Ukrainian friend and walk around the city. One day, returning to the hotel, she went into the dining room alone. The staff thought she had abandoned the girl. The situation was cleared up, but Katya preferred to temporarily move in with her friends.
After 72 hours, she and her daughter returned to the hotel and found out that their room had been taken away due to a long absence. Now the mother, along with the child, is forced to return to Ukraine, as she did not find work and housing in Spain.
The Red Cross told the publication that their program is designed for the most needy refugees from Ukraine. Therefore, trips and stays outside the accommodation centers must be justified. If the program staff decides that people have other resources for life, then such refugees are excluded from it.
Padrina’s refugee fund said that internally displaced people in Spain are “starving” and the authorities appear to have “disengaged from the serious situation of these families. ”
According to El Periódico de España, some families of Ukrainian refugees do not return to their homeland, but travel from Spain to Germany and Poland: in these countries, the reception of internally displaced persons is better organized.
Spanish prepositions. Prepositions. Spanish mobile application | SpeakASAP®
In Spanish, prepositions are of great importance, not only because many verbs are used with certain prepositions, but also because in Spanish cases are expressed using them.
preposition a
The preposition a is translated into Russian as “v, u, k, za, po” depending on the sentence and is used:

It can be seen from the last sentence that the preposition a is also used when denoting time. That is, when you want to say “at 11 am”, “at 2 pm” in Spanish, instead of the Russian preposition “at”, the preposition a is used:
Cada jueves cenamos a las 22 de la noche. We have dinner every Thursday at 10 pm.
Tengo clase a las 15 de la tarde. – I have classes at 3 pm.
