La Nena – This cafe in Gracia is a friendly hangout for friends and families, there is even a play room in the back should you want to bring the little ones. No alcohol is served in this establishment, but who needs a drink when you have freshly made churros available? They’re crispy and light (in weight that is) and come with a cup of thick hot chocolate. Carrer de Ramón y Cajal 36, 08012 Barcelona (Gracia).
Granja M Viader – It first opened in 1870 and is a true classic. If you’re craving something savory don’t miss their bikini, it’s simple but unforgettable. Churreria Laietana – Another very popular establishment where you can get your churros for very cheap. Check their hours beforehand as they take quite a long break during the day. Via Laietana 46, 08003 Barcelona (Born).
Granja Dulcinea – Located on the chocolate street of Barcelona, Carrer Petritxol, this cafe has an elegantly dressed staff and wonderful, thick chocolate. Did you try some unforgettable churros in Barcelona you just can’t get out of your head? Let me know in the comments – we’re already working on our list of must-visit spots for our next trip!
Carrer de Petritxol
Carrer de Petritxol isn’t a specific chocolate and churros shop, but it is a Barcelona churros destination that can’t be missed. This tiny, one-block street in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is home to some of the best churros in Barcelona!
Three of the six of our top picks for best churros in Barcelona are located in this short one-block stretch, where some of the city’s most historic chocolate and sweets shops have called home for years.
Many churro shops were traditionally known as “granjas” – or “dairies,” due to their specialization in milk products – many of these historic shops now specialize in hot chocolate and the churros that so perfectly accompany them. Plus, you’ll also find a range of other pastries and drinks!
If you find yourself on the Carrer de Petritxol to visit one of the three churros Barcelona destinations on our list, plan to spend a little extra time exploring. You’ll want to spend time wandering up and down this beautiful and historic street, checking out the shops you’ll find, and dreaming of all the pastries in the shop windows.

In addition to the chocolate and churros Barcelona and this street are famous for, you’ll also find some modern art galleries, clothing and accessory shops, and other cool locations to explore.
Make sure you also visit Chocolataria Equador while you’re on Carrer de Petritxol. This modern chocolate shop is continuing to keep the traditions of chocolate making alive on this historical street.
Chocolataria Equador has an unmistakable and intoxicating aroma of chocolate beckoning you in from the entrance, so it’s hard to miss.
Here you’ll find beautifully packaged chocolate bars with gourmet mixtures and ethical sourcing. Plus, tons of samples of every kind of chocolate you can imagine, and a hot chocolate fountain at the entrance.
Granja Viader
While Granja Viader isn’t located on the famous Carrer de Petritxol, this old-world churros destination is easily a contender for the best place for churros in Barcelona. With over 150 years of churros-making experience, they are certainly doing something right!
Everything about Granja Viader feels old-world and historic, down to the ceramic tiles on the floor, photos of the family that has owned the business for generations, and more.
This place is a chocolate and churros Barcelona legend, and you can feel it from the second you walk in the door.
Granja Viader’s churros are freshly fried and come hot out of the oil, sprinkled in sugar – they’re a perfect mix of a crisp exterior and a soft center. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the churros weren’t overly sweet, with almost all the sweetness coming just from the sugar on top.
Portions are not overwhelming either – one serving of churros per person is the perfect amount for breakfast or an afternoon snack.
Definitely consider splitting a hot chocolate, as even the small size of hot chocolate is more than enough for dipping. Traditional hot chocolate for churros is almost pudding-like and isn’t sippable, just for dipping, and almost too bitter to eat alone.
In addition to having some of the best churros in Barcelona, visiting Granja Viader feels like a miniature tour of traditional Spanish and Catalan cuisine. Check out the well-stocked butcher’s counter here.
You’ll find everything from traditional ham and sausages local to the region, olives and olive oils, cheese, and much more. The staff was happy to walk me through their offerings and answer all my questions.

Granja Dulcinea
Granja Dulcinea is another mainstay of Barcelona churros shops, and another location that has lovingly preserved its history.
Open since the 1940s, the quaint dining room is complete with a wooden balcony (overflow seating for early morning churros rush!) and fireplace will make you feel like you’ve been invited feels into an old Spanish family’s living room.
Out of all the churros in Barcelona that we tried, Granja Dulcinea was by far our favorite, and my top recommendation if you just have time for one breakfast of churros in Barcelona. Nothing beats Granja Dulcinea’s old-world vibes and the best chocolate and churros Barcelona has to offer.
Granja Dulcinea’s hot chocolate and churros are the perfect level of sweet, crispy, and soft, which makes them by far the best in the city.
They’re served piping hot out of the cooking oil and are just thick enough to have the perfect combination of crispy outside and soft inside. The batter is slightly sweet, and with the sugar on top, they’re just sweet enough without overdoing it.
An individual portion of churros is perfect for one person, but you’ll want to split a hot chocolate – its dense and semi-sweet and the perfect combination of bitter and chocolate to accompany the hot churros.
If you have room to spare, try the hot chocolate with the whipped cream, or an order of the melindros, a spongey vanilla cake finger also perfect for dipping in hot chocolate.
Granja Dulcinea is also one of the best spots in the city to try the traditional Spanish horchata, a sweet, milky drink made from tiger nuts grown in Valencia, Spain. If you’ve ever tried Mexican horchata, made with cinnamon and rice milk, this is a completely different experience – definitely worth a try!
When we visited Granja Dulcinea for churros as a late afternoon snack, many of the local visitors were ordering horchata, which is perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up on a hot day.

Forn D’En Pau
Located slightly off the beaten path in the Sant Antoni neighborhood, Forn D’en Pau is an excellent spot for delicious churros con chocolate, pastries, croissants – pretty much anything you can think of for a pick-me-up in the middle of a day of touring Barcelona.
While the classic churros and hot chocolate is the star at Forn D’En Pau, they have a wide range of other delicious options like chocolate-covered churros, and churros filled with dulce de leche, chocolate, and more.
Just a glimpse at the counter will leave you wishing you’d saved more room before dropping by.
Forn D’En Pau also serves great savory breakfast options if you’re looking for a more substantial breakfast. We found the entire menu quite affordable and everything we tried was delicious – this is one of the benefits of getting a bit off the beaten path to visit!
Petritxol Xocoa
Petritxol Xocoa also known as Petritxol Cafe or simply Petritxol, is another Carrer de Petritxol destination and well worth a stop on your self-guided chocolate and churros tour of Barcelona. This modern-looking destination on the Carrer de Petritxol is located directly next to Granja La Pallaresa and across the street from Granja Dulcinea.
The second you step inside Petritxol Xocoa you’ll be hit with the smell of chocolate, and overwhelmed with the number of pastry options to choose from. While we came on the hunt for the best place for churros in Barcelona, we were immediately drawn to the chocolate-covered melindros, and ended up having a much larger afternoon snack than planned.
Order your chocolate and churros up front at the counter and head to one of the several Petritxol Xocoa back dining rooms, where you’ll find patrons enjoying the cafe’s most famous treat at all hours of the day.
Their churros are just slightly sweet, but the hot chocolate here was sweeter than it was at many other famous Barcelona churros locations.
Petritxol Xocoa also has its own pre-packaged and specialty branded boxed chocolates, cookies, and cakes for sale in their storefront. These are the perfect way to bring some of your Barcelona favorites home as a souvenir for yourself or a loved one.

Granja La Pallaresa
Located in the middle of Carrer de Petritxol, Granja La Pallaresa has the feeling of an old-world, local bar, with simple tables and decorations. Despite the basic decor, this place is known for having some of the best churros in Barcelona, and they’ve mastered the recipe after decades in business.
The best time to visit is for breakfast, when churros are prepared hot and served fresh – when we passed by later in the afternoon, there was a plate of pre-prepared churros sitting up front near the window. However, make sure to get here with time to spare in the morning – you’ll usually find a line out front, which gives away just how good La Pallaresa is!
Granja La Pallaresa follows the classic chocolate and churros Barcelona recipe and traditions, but here you’ll find churros made into a longer (and thicker) finger shape rather than folded into a teardrop shape, as you’ll find at other traditional granja cafes.
Granja La Pallaresa is also known for its version of chocolate caliente suizo – or, “Swiss” hot chocolate – which comes with a giant serving of unsweetened whipped cream on top. This is the perfect place to try this traditional addition to churros in Barcelona.
Granja La Pallaresa is also the perfect place to come to try some of Barcelona’s other iconic desserts – the front window advertises their excellent Crema Catalana, a classic Catalan dish similar to creme brulee.
This is also the place to try an ensaïmada, a sweet spiral bread originally from Mallorca, Spain. This is a must-try pastry while in Barcelona – they’re flaky and delicious.
Churreria Laietana
Another best place for churros in Barcelona, though not on the famed Carrer de Petritxol, Churreria Laietana is just around the corner in the historic El Born neighborhood. This local favorite spot is well worth a visit for its cakier and fluffier churros.
Just a small bar and little room to sit, Churreria Laietana is definitely a hole in the wall, but certainly well worth its reputation for having some of the best churros in Barcelona. Most patrons take their chocolate and churros to go.
Here you’ll find churros that are a bit cakier and fluffier than you’ll find at other spots like Granja Dulcinea or Granja Viader, though just as traditional and delicious.
They’re made fresh to order and are sprinkled with sugar, and aren’t the least bit oily or overly crispy.
At Churreria Laietana you’ll also find chocolate-covered churros, another popular take on the traditional churros Barcelona style, plus the cakier porras. These are similar to donuts in texture, though shaped like a churro and therefore still perfect for dipping in hot chocolate or coffee.

It’s hard to imagine Spain and Barcelona without chocolate churros – a traditional Spanish breakfast – and not only breakfast, to be honest. Churros – sweet fried
pastries made from choux pastry, which in cross section look like a multi-pointed star – has long been perceived as an integral part of the Spanish culinary tradition, and simply very beloved by the Spaniards of all
ages treat.
Churros are always served with hot chocolate – so the result is an incredible energy bomb that leaves no stone unturned from our honest desire to eat exclusively
healthy food and soon will certainly lose weight. You won’t lose weight on churros with chocolate, that’s for sure. But it’s delicious!
And, again, a tradition that tourists visiting Barcelona are not averse to joining. In this article, we will tell you about the best places in Barcelona to serve real, time-tested
and approved by local connoisseurs of churros with chocolate.
1. Granja Dulcinea. One of the most famous and respected establishments in Barcelona. And one of the oldest – another Salvador Dali , being far from old, loved to feast on churros within the walls of Dulcinea. In addition to Dali, there have been
a huge number of both local and visiting creative intelligentsia. And even then – interiors shared by wood, from which it smells of antiquity, are utterly romantic and set up purely for
creative way. It so happened that fate brought us with tourists to the “Dulcinea” mainly in winter (although what winter is in Barcelona?) – and warm ourselves from the inside with hot churros with hot
chocolate – the pleasure is not comparable with anything. Moreover, in “Dulcinee” they know how to cook this delicacy correctly. Recommended!
Address: Carrer de Petritxol, 2
Schedule: Monday to Sunday: 9:00 – 13:00, 17:00 – 21:00

2. Granja M. Viader. Another superbly “correct” place in Barcelona serving great churros. Still they
not be remarkable if the family, as they say, has been in business for five generations, since 1870, please note, years! You can also feel the breath of history! Marc Viader, founder of the institution, not
not only made it one of the best in Barcelona, but also later created the well-known Letona dairy company, in which, since the 70s. of the last century also included a group
Cacaolat: Producer of a popular drink in Spain. And it all started with the walls of an institution that serves some of the best churros in Barcelona.
Address: Carrer d’en Xuclà, 4-6
Schedule: Monday to Saturday: 9:00 – 13:15, 17:00 –
21:15

3. Xurreria Trebol. An excellent place not only to taste churros with chocolate in the cozy interiors of the institution, but also
grab, as needed, to take away – to be fueled by the “energy” of churros in parallel with acquaintance with Barcelona. We ourselves have done this more than once, when there is no time to sit especially
was. The peculiarity of the institution is a wide selection of various variations of churros: thick and thin, long and short, looped and straight – everything that is called, for dear customers! On weekends
the institution is open and does 24 hours a day – which is not common in Spain, and therefore is especially appreciated. And, of course, the churros themselves are wonderful, as, by the way, chocolate is an integral
part of the treat.
Address: Carrer de Còrsega, 341
Schedule: Monday-Thursday: 9:00 – 22:00, Friday 9:00 – 00:00,
Saturday – around the clock, Sunday 00:00 – 22;00

4. Granja La Pallaresa. One of the most famous establishments in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter – and it is famous not only for its churros, but also for Swiss chocolate, which is so good in Pallares,
that you should not be surprised if at the narrow entrance to this ancient institution, located on Petrichol Street, you see a small group of people waiting. It so happened that the good reputation of this place
much wider than its interiors. However, churros with the ubiquitous hot chocolate in Pallares are so good that it’s not a sin to wait 5-10 minutes. The feast will more than atone for all the little
inconvenience.
Address: Carrer de Petritxol, 11
Schedule: Monday to Saturday: 9:00 – 13:00, 16:00 – 21:00,
Sunday: 9:00 – 13:00, 17:00 – 21:00.

5. La Granja 1872. As you might guess, churros have been served within the walls of this establishment since 1872, and if until now
since the business has not gone bankrupt, it means that the khoyaevs understand churros a lot. Separately, we note the authentic modernist interiors of the cafe, as well as a very creative approach to chocolate, which is served there in the most
different and not always familiar combinations, in the opinion of a classic neophyte: for example, with menthol or pepper. However, do not be afraid to experiment, and your courage will be rewarded.
the divine taste of a warming chocolate drink. As for churros, they are traditional and traditionally good! By the way, we already talked about this place in article “Coffee by the Roman Wall”.

“Churros y Chocolate” in Barcelona
Page Content
Chocolate restaurants in Barcelona are usually hidden in small streets and can be difficult to find. In this article, we will help you find the most popular restaurants and tell you what wonders await you when you get there!
The traditional Spanish treat “churros y chocolate” is a great treat on cold winter days. A churros is something like a donut-like cake, but long and thin, sprinkled with powdered sugar and usually rolled into a ring. Fresh, in paper cups, they are often sold at fairs and markets from special vans. But they are also cooked in typical Spanish cafes called “granjas”. These cafes (often referred to as chocolate restaurants) do not usually sell alcoholic beverages, but specialize in soft drinks and cakes. There, churros are served with hot chocolate so thick and juicy that it is usually eaten with a spoon, or, of course, churros are dipped in it!
Looking for a relaxing getaway in a city famous for its summertime cafes and sunshine, I realized that there is little that beats going to cafes for churros and chocolates when it’s cold outside. Although Barcelona loses out to Seville and Madrid in the gourmet field, it certainly has a lot to boast about.
Please note that granjas usually operate on a fixed schedule, with a very long lunch break (see below for more details).
La Pallaresa Chocolate Restaurant
La Pallaresa |
This is a very simple granja located in the gothic quarter, on a lovely street for chocolate lovers. Wedged between Xocoa and Demasié chocolate shops (one of Barcelona’s most revered chain chocolate shops), she sits in a narrow and picturesque street lined with pretty shops and old houses.
The café has a bustling atmosphere. The room consists of two halls, and the tables are usually always occupied. A large number of locals in this institution speaks of the high quality of local products. Groups of old Spanish ladies sit there for hours, slowly emptying plates of churros and indulging in generous portions of hot chocolate. The atmosphere is not particularly glamorous – plastic tables and bright lamps resemble a canteen. But this adds to the charm, as the quality of service and cuisine is top notch, and you get the feeling that you have found a real treasure.
The waiters are very busy, but they are polite and always come on time. The café also offers other delicacies such as Crema Catalana and rolls. However, looking around, it’s hard to see anyone ordering anything other than the famous churros and chocolate!
Churros and Chocolate at La Pallaresa |
With wet feet and cold hands from the gloomy weather, it was very nice to have a cup of hot chocolate. Chocolate is served with and without whipped cream. It is unreasonably thick and has a relatively dark color. It is served with a small bag of sugar, which at first glance seems superfluous. But chocolate has a relatively rich and bitter taste, and some, especially children, will prefer to consume it with sugar.
Churros are served warm and are completely non-greasy. I wouldn’t mind if there were a couple more churros on the plate to collect the leftovers of a lot of hot chocolate, but I have a sweet tooth, and I’m probably more demanding in this matter!

Chocolate restaurant / café La Granja
La Granja Chocolate Restaurant |
Next to La Pallaresa is the quaint and peaceful La Granja. It is located in a typical old Spanish house, with a beautiful showcase and a cozy interior. Aesthetically, this is a more attractive place. There is no bustle of La Pallaresa, in the afternoon when I was there, there were few visitors. There is a different, but no less pleasant atmosphere. La Granja is a great place to spend your time in peace. There are stacks of newspapers to read, and jazz comes from the speakers. Inside, there are marble tables, dark wood chairs, and tiled walls.
Don’t be put off by the lack of churros in sight. After talking with a sociable waitress, I was offered two options. First, this granja specializes in an alternative to churros. The so-called melindros, which are considered more typical of Barcelona than churros. It’s like a fatter version of the biscuit cakes used to make trifles or tiramisu.
Secondly, you can go to Xurreria, which is five houses away from granja, and buy churros there, which you can freely eat with a cup of chocolate at La Granja.
