Top tips for renting a car in Spain
-
If you want to visit the more rural areas of Spain, your best option is to rent a car, as public transportation tends to be sparse in the countryside.
The perks of renting a car in Spain include the outstanding views from coastal roads and highways. Outside of major towns and cities, the roads are clear and offer routes to natural wonders like the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range, which is an 82.1 km (51 mi) drive north of Madrid.
-
If you plan to take your rental car across the European border, you will need to check that your particular car is permitted. You must gain permission from your car rental company before you cross the Spanish border. If you rent a car from the Canary or Balearic Isles, you cannot take your rental car on a ferry.
-
When it comes to parking in Spain, you will find that many of the tourist attractions and cities will have plenty of pay-and-display parking, while parking tends to be free in the country or rural areas. Blue zones, indicated by blue markings on the street, mean that you can pay for the parking at the blue ticket machines for between 0,70 € ($0.79) and 1 € ($1.12) per hour.
Parking is free on Sundays.
-
If you are traveling with children in a car, keep in mind that any child under 12 years old or under 1.35 m (4 ft, 6 in) tall must sit in a restraint system. Infants up to nine months old or below 10 kg (22 lbs.) must travel in a carry cot in the back seat, while children up to the age of 12 must sit in either a car seat or booster seat in the back of the car. If you do not bring your own child car seat, you may rent one from a car rental company for around 12 € ($13) a day.

Top tips for renting a car in Asturias
-
Remember that Asturias is mostly flat with some gently sloping hills to the north and west when renting a car there.
A two-wheel drive car may therefore travel through these places with ease. However, four-wheel drive will probably be necessary if you plan to drive your rented car in Asturias’ southern region. This is due to the region’s predominantly mountainous environment. Thus, 4×4 vehicles with high ground clearance are ideal for rental in this area.
-
Your Asturias car rentals will make crossing the border simple. The majority of car rental agencies in the area, including Thrifty, Dollar, Avis, and Hertz, allow their clients to travel into France without many restrictions. However, you must let your automobile rental business know in advance if you want to cross the border with a rented vehicle. The majority of Asturias car rental companies impose an extra price for border crossing. Drivers also need to have the appropriate documentation for them to be able to drive the Asturias-rented car into France without violating the border crossing laws.
-
Keep in mind that all infants in private vehicles, including car rentals, must be in child seats or restraints if you are driving in Asturias with your kids.
As a result, be sure to ask for a child seat from your car rental service provider when making a reservation or picking up your vehicle. Most Asturias vehicle rentals charge extra per day for child, infant, or booster seats. Whether you will be picking a child seat, infant seat, or booster seat depending on the age of your kids.
-
The majority of Asturias car rental pick-up sites experience a significant rise in the number of customers seeking vehicle rental services on weekends and public holidays like Constitution Day. On a day like this, if you want to pick up your car, be prepared to spend more time than usual because of the lengthy lineups. If you reserve your car online before you get to the pickup location, you will save a lot of time. Additionally, making an online auto reservation ensures that you won’t miss out on the car type of your choice at the designated car pickup place.

Car Rental in Spain – Localrent.
com
Spain is a country that is filled with many incredible wonders. Here you can swim in the azure sea and soak up the warm silk sand, wander through the streets of old cities and immerse yourself in ancient history, ride along dizzying mountain serpentines and take a leisurely walk among natural beauties. And if you like to travel on your own, then this is the perfect place to rent a car and arrange the autotrip of your dreams.
With a rental car, you don’t have to rush to a public transport flight, enjoy sightseeing at a strictly allotted time, or wait for lagging behind tourists who have come with you on the same sightseeing bus. A rented car is an opportunity to enjoy a trip around sunny Spain at your own pace.
You can pick up and book a car in advance online on our website.
If you get to Spain by plane, you can order the delivery of a rented car directly to the airport.
The manager will meet you upon arrival, draw up an agreement and hand over the keys.
Five reasons to rent a car for travel on our website
- The best offers from reliable local car rental companies are collected in one place. You can easily and quickly compare suitable options and choose the most profitable one.
- The final and detailed calculation of the cost of the order is visible even before payment. No hidden fees or commissions.
- Advance payment for booking – only 15-20%. The principal amount is paid upon receipt of the vehicle.
- Basic insurance is already included in the price.
- Friendly customer service to help you in any situation.
How long to rent a car
The duration of the rental directly depends on your idea of a perfect holiday in Spain.
If you want to arrange a seal vacation in the “hotel-beach-hotel” mode and slightly dilute it with a small trip to the nearest attractions, then 2-3 days of rent will suffice.
And if you have long dreamed of making a real road trip, visiting the most incredible places in Spain and enjoying the soul of this country – take a car for the whole vacation. There are enough attractions here for any period.
What you need to rent
In order to rent a car, you will need:
- driving license;
- passport;
- bank card.
The minimum driver age is 22 years. Official driving experience – from 2 years.
Which car to choose
For trips around the city and nearby attractions, you can take a small economical vehicle.
If you are going to go to the mountains, choose a high-performance car with an engine capacity of more than 1.6 liters. The ideal option would be an all-wheel drive crossover.
Before driving into the mountains, fill up with a reserve. On the rises, fuel consumption increases by one and a half to two times. And gas stations in mountain villages may not be.
A cabriolet is the way to go.
A minivan is suitable for friendly companies or large families. Just agree on a travel plan with all fellow travelers in advance.
Features of traffic rules
In general, the Spaniards drive carefully and disciplined, pedestrians are allowed to pass, turn signals flash on time, the speed limit is observed.
Speed limits:
- within the city – 50 km/h;
- outside the city – 90 km/h;
- on motorways – 120 km/h.
There is no need to violate it, there are enough video cameras and radars along the roads so that the maneuver does not go unpunished.
Belts must be worn by both the driver and passengers.
Do not use your phone while driving. You can talk using the “Hands Free” system.
The driver’s blood alcohol limit is 0.5 mg/ml.
Toll roads
There are toll roads in the country, but it makes sense to use them only if you are in a hurry to get somewhere. The alternative free road, as a rule, passes through more picturesque places, is equipped with observation platforms and small cafes with local cuisine, and it is much more interesting to drive along it.
If you still need to use the toll road, then:
- You can’t get on it by mistake, there must be a toll station before entering.
- You can pay in cash or by card. Experienced travelers do not recommend the latter method. Due to system errors, you may be charged extra money. Then, of course, they will sort it out and return it, but you will waste your time and nerves.
The easiest way is to pay in cash. You press the communication button on the scoreboard at the beginning of the strip, an operator approaches you – and you pay.
It is difficult to calculate the average cost, since the price depends on several factors: what kind of road, traffic, whether there are tunnels. Very roughly – 10-15 € per 100 kilometers.
Parking lots
In large cities, parking lots are mostly paid. They can be easily identified by the blue markings on the pavement and the corresponding sign. Payment is made immediately, at the parking meter, with coins.
