Barcelona: FC Barcelona 101: a how-to guide

Barcelona
has one of the best football teams in the world, FC Barcelona, and a visit to the
city is not complete without seeing the team’s famous stadium – Camp Nou
(certainly for football fans).
Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe, the 2nd largest football
(soccer) stadium in the world, with 98.787 seats (105,053 after the planed
renovation that will begin in 2017 and be finished in 2021). A tour of the
stadium is available and, together with the FC Barcelona museum is a must for
every Fan, so don’t miss the Camp Nou
Experience Tour & Museum, but the best and most exciting experience is attending a match, something
that even non-football fans will enjoy.
For more information about the Camp Nou
Experience Tour & Museum read the “Camp Nou Tour and Museum” article.

The
“Free Seats” system

Before you
buy a ticket it is important to understand how the ticket distribution system
works.
In camp Nou all the seats are held by season ticket holders so, in theory, no
seats are available for the general public, but not all season ticket holders
attend all matches and that’s where the free seats system (Seient lliure) kicks
in. Every home game the season ticket holders can free his/her seat if he/she
decides not to attend the match and once it’s freed the seat goes out on sale
to the general public.  Seat holders who’s
seats are sold receive 50% of the purchase price, which motivates the them to
release their seats if they do not attend. Most seat holders start releasing
their seats 10-14 days before the match, most do it in the last few days, up to
72 hours before the match (if they release the tickets less than 72 hours
before the match the money for the sale can only be used to cover their annual
membership fee. An earlier relice ensures that the payment is transfer to their
bank account).

Buying
match tickets

The best
option for most is to buy the tickets online, but be watch out for unofficial
websites that offer tickets for sale even before they are officially released
as you might find yourself without the money and the tickets (see more belo).

The best
place to buy the tickets is the official FC Barcelona website, it is user friendly and the
tickets can be printed at home.
Ticketmaster
is also a good option and it is an official FC Barcelona partner.
The maximum number of tickets allowed per purchase is 6.

It is,
also, possible to buy the tickets once in Barcelona but, usually, it is not a
good idea as the match can be sold out by then, all the good seats might be
taken or the only available seats might be in separate locations in the stadium.
That said, in less important matches the risk is minimal so it can be an option
if the plan to watch the match is not final.
The official tickets sale points in Barcelona are:

  • ·
FC Barcelona ticket office at Camp Nou stadium
  • ·
Tourist information office at Pl. Catalunya
  • ·
    Fnac stores
  • ·
    Official FC Barcelona shops

Unofficial
tickets websites

As mentioned, there are plenty of websites today that offer match tickets
before the tickets are released and for matches that do not offer tickets for
the general public (like  El Clásico
against Real Madrid). Those websites do so with the help of 3rd
party seat holder vendors, an action which the legality of it is not clear (the
law in Spain forbids reselling tickets in the vicinity of the stadium, as when
it was passed, before the 1982 World Cup in Spain, there was no Internet, but
according to some of the sections of the law it can be easily interpreted to
prohibit Internet sales as well) which can cause problems when entering the
stadium. In addition, as the website is only a mediator and the vendors are
private citizens or agencies you might find yourself without tickets (it has
happened before when sellers and agents disappeared without delivering the
tickets) or running across town to get them. Apart from that you will pay more
than the actual ticket value in commissions to the vendor and the website.
The only time that this option should be considered is when there are no
regular tickets on sale (like with El Clásico) and only after taking into
account the risks.

Date and
time of the match.
There are 38 rounds
in “La Liga”, most rounds are played during the weekend but some (especially
toward the end of the season) might be in the middle of the week.
Most matches are played on Saturdays and Sundays (or Tuesdays and Wednesdays if
the round is in the middle of the week) but there are expressions. In weekend
rounds matches can take place on Fridays or Mondays and on weekday rounds on
Thursdays.
The exact match day and the exact time (that can vary from noon, early or late
afternoon to evening) are set about 10 days before the match (they try now to
set the exact date and time earlier when possible). The reason for this is the
broadcasting rights as TV stations want to broadcast the most interesting crowd
drawing match and this depend on the standings of each team and the success of
the teams at a specific moment.
This means that you might not be able to attend the match, so if you cannot be
in Barcelona during the optional dates buy the tickets only after the official
date is published.
Be aware that until the official dates are set matches are displayed, as a
default, on a Sunday (or a Wednesday, if it’s a weekday round).

Match
calendar.

The “La Liga” calendar is set each year around the middle of July and matches usually
start in August. Before the league starts there is the Joan Gamper Trophy,
where FC Barcelona plays a friendly match against another team (the caliber of
this team varies) and the Supercopa de España (only if FC Barcelona won the
league championship or the Copa del Rey).
The first round of “La Liga” starts at the end of August and ends at the end of
May, with a winter break in December (usually the last round before the break
is in the weekend before Christmas and the next round is in the first weekend
of the new year).
Most matches are played around the weekends and during the week there are
matches of the Copa del Rey and the Champions League (Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

Free entry
for kids

Some places mention the option of free entry for kids, as long as they seat on
your lap, but this is no longer true.
Today the “Children in the Camp Nou” option is only available if the child is a
club member and is younger than 8 and the process itself makes it inaccessible
for non-residents and open only for club members (and even then it’s not
guaranteed).

Servicaixa
Many websites still mention the option of buying tickets through the Servicaixa
website or ATMs but this is no longer true as the La Caixa bank closed down this
service and sold the activity to Ticketmaster.

Getting
the tickets

The best
option to obtain the ticket is to print it at home. If you cannot do that, or
if you’ve bought the ticket while in Barcelona and do not have a printer you
can save the PDF archive on a portable storage device and ask your hotel to
print it for you or go to an Internet shop (called Locutorio) or a copy shop
and print it there for a small fee.

E-ticket is available through Passbook for Iphone and Passwallet for Android phones (details here).

Tickets
bought from the FC Barcelona website can be picked up at the ticket office in
Camp Nou. In theory you can pick it up before the game but it is recommended to
do this, at least, a day before the match or get to the stadium, at least, 3
hours before the game.
If the purchaser picks up the tickets he will need a copy of the reference
e-mail and a photo ID (ID card, passport or driver’s license).
If another person comes to collect the tickets he must bring a copy of the reference
e-mail, his ID (ID card, passport or Driver’s license), a copy of the purchaser’s
ID/passport/license and an authorization latter signed by the purchaser
authorizing him to collect the tickets. This letter must include the full name
and ID/passport number of the purchaser, the full details of all the tickets
and the full name and ID/passport/license number of the person collecting the
tickets.
Click here for a PDF of such a statement, just
print it and fill the details.
The card used for the purchase is not on the official list but it is
recommended to bring it with you or, in case the person collecting the tickets
is not the purchaser, a photo copy of the card.

Tickets
bought from Ticketmaster can be picked up at Fnac stores, Carrefour
supermarkets and Halcón travel agencies that are on this list.
The purchaser must bring an ID (ID card or passport), the purchase reference
and the card used for the purchase.
If another person comes to collect the tickets he must bring his ID (ID card or
passport), the purchase reference, a copy of the purchaser ID, a copy of the
card used for the purchase (both sides) and a letter of authorization signed by
the purchaser indicating his full name and ID/passport number and the full name
and ID/passport number of the person collecting the tickets.
The tickets must be collected more than 3 working days before the match.

Servicaixa
As mentioned above, the Servicaixa service was discontinued and tickets cannot
be collected at the Servicaixa ATMs.

Best
seats

Camp Nou is
strictly a football stadium (it also hosted very few concerts in the past) and
it was built to ensure good viewing angle from every seat but some seats are
better than others.
The main stand (tribuna) and the lateral stand (lateral) offer the same view obviously, but price difference is due to the main stands services being better. Lower and more central tiers will also have
better atmosphere, as many times the upper and cheaper tiers are half empty and
occupied mainly by tourists. For atmosphere, the hardcore supporters gather
behind the southern goal and the away team fans
are behind the southern goal, in the top tier.
Click here for the stadium sections map.

Getting
to/from Camp Nou

Metro
L3 – Green line
The line circles around the north/west side of the stadium so the best stop
depends on the access gate printed on the ticket.
Les Corts: for access gates 16-21 (also OK for access gates 14- 15).
Maria Cristina: for access gates 1-6 (also OK for access gates 7-9).
Palau Reial: for access gates 7-15 (also OK for access gates 4-6).

L5 –
Bule line

The line passes along the eastern side of the stadium. The best stop depends on
the access gate printed on the ticket.
Badal: for access gates 16-21.
Collblanc: for access gates 1-15 (the lower the number of the access
gate,  the longer the walk).

Bus

Line 59: From Barcelona through the Ramblas, Pl.

Line H8: One of the horizontal fast lines that stops
near the east/south ends of the stadium..
Best for access gates 10-21
Line 54: From Estació Nord through Pl. Tetuan, Gran

Click here to see the access gates layout

*you can go in the stadium area by any access, not just the one printed in your ticket, but it is recommended use the one printed there as it is the one closer to your stadium gate access (called Porta in your ticket).

Night
bus/Special metro/Special Bus

As some of
end late it is possible that regular public transport will not work but there
are alternatives.

Metro
Usually if a game ends after midnight on workdays or Sundays (when the metro
closes at 12am) TMB prolongs the operating metro time from the nearby stations.
This is a special service and the flow of people in the stations is,
efficiently, regulated by the police.

Special
bus

A special bus to Pl. Catalunya operates after the match. The stop is near
access gate 1 and the fare is 2.90€.

Night
bus

Just like every night the night buses (calle NitBus) operate throughout the
city and the metropolitan area.
Remember, all lines will stop at Pl. Catalunya (apart from the N0, which is a
circular line), just make sure that you are taking the bus in the right
direction.
N12: From Av. Diagonal through Comte d’Urgell,
Villarroel, Gran Via, Pl. Unoversitat, Pl. Catalunya, Las Ramblas, Pg. Colom.
N2: From Carretera de Collblanc/Carrer de Sants through Pl. Espanya, Gran Via, Pl. Universitat, Pl. Catalunya, Passeig de

General Information or How to Purchase Tickets for FC Barcelona’s Football Games?

Are you visiting Barcelona with your family or friends and also truly passionate about football? If so, you must go watch an FC Barcelona’s home game to get a taste of the best and finest football on the planet!

You will get to see the largest and one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world, together with the thrilled home team fans! With its nearly 100,000 seats, Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe and combined with the always present audience, you will get the chance to have a once in a life time experience.

Before purchasing a ticket to one of the football matches, it is important to consider your best options. The price and availability of the tickets depends highly on the match that is taking place and the position of the seats. The seats that are located on the length of the stadium, closer to the middle line are more expensive than those that are located on the short side of the field, behind the goals.

Choosing a ticket for an FC Barcelona game can be quite complicated due to the many options and the variables that affects the price. If you are a young adult going to the game with one other friend, you will probably want the full “supporter” experience. Therefore, you should get a ticket from the team’s official website, and seat on the curve of the stadium, behind the gate, alongside the fans and the gallery. But if you are traveling with your family, you might want a seat on the length of the field, and buy your tickets from a broker and have them delivered to your hotel. We will analyse this subject in more detail in the following paragraphs.

Camp Nou is a big stadium that offers various seating options at a variety prices. Starting with cheap and simple tickets behind the goal, to more expensive seats right next to the field and close to the middle line, and very expensive VIP cards. Another thing to keep in mind is that sometimes buying 3 or 4 seats next to each other can cost you extra, and if you are okay with sitting in separate parts of the stadium, an individual ticket can be bought at a discount.

The Dynamic of FC Barcelona Tickets on Camp Nou

There are basically 3 stages in a ticket’s life, and with each stage the ticket price increases a little bit:

  • Stage one: The tickets are released to subscribed members, people who bought a full year pass (some are actually chair owners in the stadium for more than a few years). But a significant number of those members chose not to go to every game and then the unconfirmed seats for the game move to the second stage.
  • Stage two: The tickets that have been unclaimed by the subscribed members move in the hands of the club members. This category is formed by a few million people around the world that are FC Barcelona club members, but they rarely go to the team’s games – except for unique cases. The tickets that are still unclaimed by the club members ultimately reach the public market (third stage).
  • Stage Three: Any unclaimed ticket so far reaches the public market through the official website of the team. At this point, usually a couple of days before the game, tickets that could not be obtained before are available for the public at a very good price.

Buying a ticket from the team’s website is usually the cheapest and the safest way, but the main issue is that you can not always find the tickets you are looking for.  For instance, if you are visiting with friends of family, finding 3-4 tickets right next to each other might be very hard. The ticket type you are most comfortable with might not be available up to the last minute, and not all the tourists will be willing to wait up to that point to buy a ticket.

Therefore, the alternative is to buy tickets from brokers and ticket websites. This is a market that has grown immensely around the football scene in Barcelona.

On one hand, they offer security in obtaining the tickets, peace of mind, and the certainty that the tickets will reach their destination as well as providing the option to book the tickets in advance, not only at the last minute. However, you must take into account the commission of those merchants, and the fact that ticket prices differences are sometimes in tens of percent.

Ticket Types

In this section, we looked at the tickets from a touristic and a marketing perspective and we separated them into 2 categories: The differences related to the game, and the differences related to the actual seats in the stadium.

Differences Related to the Game:

As previously mentioned, the ticket prices vary according to the importance of the match and the popularity of the team that FC Barcelona is facing on the field.

  • Tickets for the First National League (La Liga)

Getting tickets for the First National League (La Liga) when the matches are being played at Camp Nou is not difficult given the capacity of the stadium. Every game has a different importance to the team, as well as its supporters. Therefore, if you are planning to attend a game against a random team which is not Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, you should not experience any problems in buying a ticket directly from FC Barcelona’s official website (www.fcbarcelona.com) at a standard price, since the stadium is almost never at full capacity when it comes to games of this caliber. However, there could be exceptions to this “rule”, so it is better to be prepared.

  • Tickets for Cup games

When it comes to various Cup games, finding tickets is also relatively easy, since the importance is not very high and the teams do not pose a significant threat. Tickets for the National Cup (Copa del Rey) and Pre-Season games will be more easily accessible than League games and they will also be cheaper. You may encounter some problems or difficulties in getting these tickets only in case the team managed to get through the first rounds in the National Cup and is about to approach the final. In this case, the chances of facing bigger teams like Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla are higher and the demand on the tickets is higher. In accordance, the prices will be higher as well.

  • Tickets for the Champions League

The ticket dynamic for the Champions League games is very different from regular tickets. On one hand, you have the early group stage, also known as the home stage. For these games the prices are similar to those for regular league games against teams from the upper half of the table. On this stage, the tickets are easy to spot on the team’s website once they are available, and you should not have any trouble finding cheap ones. On the other hand, you have the late stages, the eights, and the quarters where tickets are harder to find. The further the team climbs towards the final, the more important the matches become and therefore more and more people want to attend these games. In such cases, because the stadium reaches over 70 percent occupancy, finding cheap tickets on the team’s website turns into a difficult task. For these games you might want to consider looking for tickets on broker websites or websites like Viagogo or Ticketbis, especially if you are looking for seats closer to the field or you need more than 2 tickets. Even though they might not happen every year, the semifinals have an impressive impact on the availability of the tickets. Here, the ticket dynamic is very similar to El Clasico, meaning that the stadium is almost at full capacity and the tickets are very hard to find at the last minute. In such situations, we recommend buying tickets in advance from a broker, or at website like Viagogo or Ticketbis, especially if you want to buy more than 2 tickets.

Camp Nou before the start of the Champions League game

  • Tickets for the El Clasico

Tickets to El Clasico are very difficult to acquire, regardless of the ticket type. Games versus Real Madrid, (and in the last couple of years Atletico Madrid), are in high demand because of the importance and the rivalry between the three teams. Tickets are, in most cases, even harder to get than Champions League tickets for the middle to late stage games. The stadium is almost at full capacity because subscribers will usually claim their seats. Because of this, we strongly recommend using ticket brokers and merchants like Viagogo and Ticketbis, especially for high demand seats, and also if you are looking for more than 3 tickets.

Differences Related to the the Seating Area:

The stadium, like it was mentioned earlier in this page, is divided into sectors and 4 levels (rings). To make it easier for people who are not very familiar with how stadiums work, we will divide them into long sides of the pitch and short sides.

Generally speaking, the closer the seat is to the field (lower ring) and the middle line (the middle of the field), the higher the demand is, and therefore the more expensive the ticket price for that particular seat will be. But the choice is not always revolving around the ticket’s price.

The closer the seat is to the field (lower ring) and the middle line (the middle of the field), the better the view; however, this option is an expensive one.

For example, if you just want to enjoy a football match with your kids and family or even friends without being involved in any sort of choirs or other distractions, it is preferable to get the tickets on the two long sides of the pitch, even though it will be slightly more expensive. If you are looking forward to mix yourself with FC Barcelona supporters and want to feel for once like a “Culè” (FC Barcelona’s most passionate supporters), you should definitely get a ticket on the short side of the pitch.

One thing is sure – no matter in which sector or ring you will sit, you are going to have an amazing time and a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Where Can I Order FC Barcelona Tickets?

This question has been answered in a scattered manner throughout the page. In this section, we will try to bring it all together, review all the various options and explain how we can help you.

FC Barcelona’s website

The first recommended option for you to check out is the official website of FC Barcelona. Tickets are always available on FC Barcelona’s website a few days before the game. This is probably the cheapest way of getting tickets. However, as we stated previously in this article, this might not be the ideal method to purchase tickets when it comes to some of the tourists. When it comes to tickets to games that are in high demand, or you want to buy 3 or 4 tickets together, the club’s website will not be able to fulfil this demand. It is highly recommended to use this method because most of the times there should be no problem in finding your desired ticket, since in most instances the stadium is only at 50-70 percent occupancy. At the same time, you save money since there is no need to pay any commission associated with third party dealers and merchants.

Agency and Broker

Going through an agency is probably the easiest and stress-free way of getting tickets. The price is much higher than tickets bought directly from the box office or the team’s website, but it grants you a customer service and it is immediate. In addition, for highly sought-after games and special circumstances, like attending a game with your friends and sitting together, this is sometimes the only sure way to purchase the desired tickets.

Tickets Commerce Platforms like Viagogo or Ticketbis

Getting tickets through such platforms is very easy, immediate and grants you the ticket ahead of time, just like agencies, but it does not provide customer service. It is very important to point that out, although you can obtain a number of worthwhile offers and an extensive supply of tickets using these platforms – it is highly recommended to check beforehand to see if the platforms are suitable for you. We recommend them mainly for ordering e-tickets (less recommended to order tickets that will be sent to your hotel – mainly because their customer service is not at the level of the agencies). We also consider them more than suitable for tourists that possess an average or higher than average technology orientation, in terms that they can manage the email customer service and know their way around platforms of this nature.

Box office

Like ordering the tickets from the FC Barcelona’s website, this option is cheaper but still difficult to get. In the digital world that we live today, we honestly see no reason to use this outlet when you can buy the same tickets directly from the club’s website (www.fcbarcelona.com). Here we are referring to the official box office of FC Barcelona; there are lots of other ticket vendors scattered all across the city, but between those and the dealer’s websites you can find the same prices for the same tickets.

Entrance to the Camp Nou Experience – Right before embarking on the Barça adventure, the visitors are greeted by this entrance sign which will lead them directly into the venue.

Tips and Recommendations

  • There is a variety of tickets on the market and all of them are viable. The main factors when choosing your tickets should be: the importance of the game, the seat in the stadium and the time from the purchase to the actual game. We recommend consulting with us before making a purchase.
  • If you are looking for tickets to low-level games, such as a pair of regular league tickets, you do not need to be stressed out. In our opinion, you can easily find these tickets on the website before the game. Although, if you are looking for more sought-after tickets for games like El Classico or later stages of Champions League, we recommend to pre-order the tickets to ensure you will find a seat. We also recommend pre-ordering when you want to buy 3 or more tickets together.
  • If you already know that the game you want to watch is an important one and you are visiting Barcelona as a one time experience, get the tickets through an agency or platforms like Viagogo or Ticketbis to make sure you will actually attend the game.
  • NEVER buy tickets from random people outside the stadium, websites or dealers you do not know or have never heard of. Nearly all the time, those tickets are fake and you will not be allowed to enter the stadium.

    Sports Barcelona: matches, clubs, seasons

As paella is more than food for the Catalans, football is more than sport for them. This can be understood by the paraphernalia of the beloved FC Barcelona, which is colorful at every step. Not surprisingly, it is here that the third largest stadium in the world, Camp Nou, was built, which seats about a hundred thousand spectators and is usually filled to capacity. Well, buy tickets and go on a tour of Barcelona!

    “More than a club”

Barcelona is not only a sports organization, but also a social phenomenon. The whole city is talking about the club, all of Catalonia is worried about the team, and the fans on the podium express their position to the whole world!

Barça is probably one of the best teams today, a regular participant in the final stages of the national cup and the Champions League. To cheer for your favorite team, we are planning a trip for the end of October – November or March – April. Tickets for the match can be bought both on the club’s official website and at the stadium box office.

    Camp Nou Treasures

Europe’s largest stadium, Camp Nou, is open to the public all year round and houses the popular Barcelona FC history museum. Entrance will cost an adult 23 euros, students and pensioners 17 euros, and children are free. As part of an independent tour with an audio guide in Russian, you can walk through the corridors, locker rooms, go to the club museum, where you can buy a piece of lawn, and visit the director’s box. You can get to Camp Nou by metro to Colblanc station.

    Cornella El Prat

Kmap Nou, although the most famous, but still not the only stadium in Barcelona. Outside the city is Cornella El Prat. It hosts the home matches of Barca’s rivals Espanyol (the first football club created exclusively by the Spaniards).

At every twenty-first minute of a home game, applause is heard from the stands in memory of the captain of Espanyola, Daniel Jarka, who played under the 21st number. He died of a heart attack while preparing for a friendly against Bologna. A monument was erected in his honor near the 21st sector of the arena.

The best way to get to the stadium is by taking the Ferrocarriles Generalitat (FGC) train to Almeda station.

    Canaletes Fountain

After the game, we boldly follow Barça fans to the Canaletes cast-iron fountain, which has been considered a place to celebrate the success of our beloved club since the 20th century. According to legend, those who drink from this fountain will definitely return to Barcelona!

    Souvenirs

Probably, there will definitely be no problems with this – Barça’s attributes are full of colors at every step.
