The best craft beer in Barcelona, Spain
This post has partner links that I may receive compensation for at no cost to you. Thank you!
Barcelona is one of my favorite cities in the world. It’s a place that’s both aware of its history while also pushing constantly toward the future. When it comes to architecture, art, food, and drink, Barcelona is always innovating. So it’s no surprise that the city has a massive, rapidly-growing craft beer scene. Most of the best bars are centrally located as well, so it’s easy to get to several different bars in one night. Best of all, unlike in some places, drinking craft beer in Barcelona doesn’t mean you’re stuck with typical American or British pub food. Many of the bars also feature menus with excellent local meats, cheeses, and tapas, so it’s perfectly easy to go from bar to bar, having a pint & a bite to eat at each. Here’s my guide to the best places to drink craft beer in Barcelona.
Table of Contents
The best craft beer bars in Barcelona
Cerveseria BierCaB
Cerveseria BierCaB is a beer nerd paradise in Eixample. Eixample is packed full of great craft beer bars, including the next few on this list. With 30 taps, it has one of the best beer selections in Barcelona. Some are local, while the rest are from all over Europe. There’s also a small, but high-quality bottle selection. The staff members clearly know their stuff, and they’re happy to help guide you to the beer you’re looking for.
It’s all a little bit of a beer bar cliche at this point, but give me classic rock & metal in a place with empty Russian River beer bottles on the walls, and I’ll be happy.
BrewDog Barcelona
Readers of this blog will know that I end up in a BrewDog bar pretty much everywhere I go. While there are plenty of other local beer options in Barcelona, there’s also a BrewDog in Eixample, so I had to stop in.
As far as BrewDog bars go, this was one of the larger spaces I’ve been in. It wasn’t crowded at all, and had a nice mix of 11 taps of BrewDog beer, plus 10 more guests, including a few Spanish beers.
Mikkeller Barcelona
Mikkeller is another worldwide craft beer bar chain that can be found in many major cities. Their Barcelona bar has the same decor as other Mikkellers.
The bar has 24 taps. Unfortunately, none of them are local, but there is still a nice selection of their own beer & beer from other European breweries.
There are a couple of other beer bars & bottle shops in Eixample that sound great, but I wasn’t able to visit: CocoVail Beer Hall, which also offers street food, and Zythos.
Chivuo’s Slow Street Food & Craft Beer
Chivuo’s has a few locations in Barcelona. The one I visited was located a couple of blocks off La Rambla.
The bar has 6 taps of local beer, plus sandwiches, fries, and other snacks. It’s a cool little corner spot that feels like a nice neighborhood spot to meet friends.
Beer’linale
Beer’linale is another beer bar near La Rambla. It has one of the largest craft beer selections in Barcelona, with 30 taps of beer. There’s a mix of local & Spanish beer, with the rest from elsewhere in Europe. A set of house beers comes from a brewery called Ilda’s.
While the beer list is great, Beer’linale also has one of the more extensive food menus you’ll find in a beer bar. Going beyond just tapas, they also have a full menu of Spanish dishes. When I visited, I’d just had a snack from the nearby La Boqueria market, but I still tried the coquetas de jamon iberico.
Kaelderkold
Kaelderkold is another great bar just off of La Rambla in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. It’s an unassuming place in an alley next to a church, but inside it’s a nice bar.
The bar has 15 taps, a couple of which are local, and the rest are from all over Europe. It’s a small, intimate bar with just a counter to sit at, but that makes it great for solo travelers and others who are looking for some conversation.
La Rambla and the surrounding areas have tons of touristy bars, so it’s great that there are some off-the-beaten-path craft beer and tapas places like Kaelderkold around.
Craft Barcelona
Craft Barcelona is another bar in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. It’s tucked down an alleyway, which is always a good sign. Look for the Brewdog sign & Catalonian flag, near the Cathedral. Most visitors will walk right past the alley entrance while they are sightseeing, but in addition to being right around the corner from some cool Roman ruins, Craft Barcelona is a nice classic Barcelona beer & tapas bar.
Craft Barcelona has a little bit of everything. There’s a selection of 9 taps, plus some local bottles. They also offer true pintxos, as you take what you want from the counter, then count the toothpicks to pay at the end. Each one is €1.
The bar also has entertainment, featuring open mic nights, music, and stand-up comedy. When I visited, a beer tour had just entered, but there was plenty of room for everyone. In a city overrun with touristy bars, Craft Barcelona is a nice bridge between a traditional Barcelona bar experience and quiet craft beer bar.
The best breweries in Barcelona
Garage Beer Co
Garage Beer is one of the larger new breweries in Barcelona, and they’re doing some exciting stuff. Their bar has 10 taps, mostly their own, but also a couple of guests. There’s a selection of some local & import bottles as well.
They’re another spot filled with friendly, knowledgable bartenders. I talked with one bartender, Esteban, for a bit, and while I had a New England-inspired IPA & an excellent meat & cheese plate, he filled me in on some other places I should check out in the area.
The front room of Garage has a small bar to sit at, but head further back, and there’s a nice relaxing space with couches & places to relax.
Barcelona Beer Company
Continuing our tour of Barcelona’s best craft beer bars, let’s head across Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes toward the coast. Here you will find Barcelona Beer Company.
Since space in central Barcelona is limited, not many of the bars have patios of any significance. Barcelona Beer Company has one, which makes them noteworthy. They also have 16 taps of beer, 10 of their own and 6 guest.
Abirradero
Abirradero is in a somewhat different area, but it’s still within a reasonable walking distance from central Barcelona. The bar happened to be located near my hotel, the excellent Hotel Barcelona Universal
. It’s just across Paral-lel, making it a great option if you’re staying in this area of Barcelona. While there are other bars & restaurants around, the only other craft beer spot nearby is Brew Pub Le Sec, which was closed when I visited.
Abirradero has a phenomenal selection of beer, which can be enjoyed inside or on their large patio. Their 40 taps are the largest selection I saw. Amazingly about 75% are unique to them, brewed from their affiliated ICA (Instituto de la Cerveza Artizans). This craft beer brewing school provides opportunities for budding brewers to hone their craft. This school & bar truly make Barcelona’s craft beer scene unique. When there are this many taps available for showcasing creations, it allows brewers an opportunity to make something that stands out. While a selection this varied can be hit-or-miss, there are plenty of interesting beers to be found if you’re willing to poke through the list. Also, they serve each style beer at the optimal temperature, which few bars are serious enough to do.
While Barcelona’s craft breweries might not yet be achieving large distribution outside of Spain, the local beer scene is outstanding. There are beer bars to suit whatever kind of place you’re looking for, and the breweries in the city are producing increasingly high-quality beer. It’s only a matter of time before Barcelona’s craft beer scene gets its proper recognition, but in the meantime, if you’re visiting the city you can be a proper hipster & say you got to visit these bars & breweries first.

Even some in beer-proud Madrid will tell you that Barcelona is the place to be for great brew. This is a city with such huge aficionados of craft beer that they make that special combo of water, malt, hops and barley their cause – to the extent that there are tours of breweries, social networks devoted to craft beer, and you can even use apps like Untappd and websites such as BeerAdvocate, and RateBeer to seek out the latest barrel or bottle, including both local and imported products. December ’92. While Barcelona was recovering from its post-Olympic hangover, one young man was getting ready to open what was to become a beer institution: the Cerveseria Jazz. Almost a quarter of a century later, Àlex Camacho is still behind the bar cooking up some of the best hamburgers in the city with the same patience and enthusiasm as when he talks about beer. The Jazz was a founding member of the Humulus Lupulus association and Steve’s Academy, and its walls are full of history – and not just of music, but of beer as well.

Times have changed since 1993, when Steve Huxley began making Iberian, the first beer to be brewed and served at a microbrewery in Barcelona. And when Olaf Martí took the helm, made sure that the Artesana stuck to its principles: keep their five taps full of their home brews, and add in special touches that run the gamut from wild mushrooms to honey or spices. A classic.

Before launching the great adventure that is Biercab, Manolo Baltasar transformed this sandwich shop into a place of pilgrimage for beer worshipers back in 1996. Thanks to the great selection of imported bottles – and not just from Germany – and despite starting out with just three taps (now they’ve got ten), this small space in front of the Collblanc market is also the perfect spot to stop in before a match at Camp Nou or a concert at Palau Sant Jordi.

Just like the businesses in the Gaixample, the area’s beer purveyors have become an attraction beyond the limits of the city, beyond Catalonia and even beyond the borders of Spain. The turning point came when Biercab placed in the world ranking of beer establishments on the specialised website RateBeer, in summer 2014. The knowledge and insight of the brewpub’s partners – Navarran brewery Naparbier, distributors Zombier, and two respected professionals from the sector, Sven Bosch (The Drunk Monk) and Manolo Baltasar (Freiburg) – laid the foundations. They’ve got 30 taps and a huge selection of bottled beers, which is extended now extended at their shop at Muntaner, 57.

Ølgod is a craft beer bar in the heart of the Raval that boasts 30 taps. The name comes from a Danish town, and means ‘god of beer’, and you’ll notice it all as soon as you walk in when you’re greeted by runes and a Viking ship. The folks at Ølgod are dedicated to craft beer from the north (although there’s always a local representation). In the kitchen is the same chef who worked in the space that stood here before: Juicy Jones. This translates to a small menu of vegetarian dishes made from simple yet quality recipes where everything is home-made (including the tortilla chips). There’s also a good, generous set lunch menu, which includes a pint of craft beer, or two half pints if you’re in the mood for trying a couple of different brews.

In search of craft. Part 7: Catalonia, Barcelona
Hoping for good craft in a wine country seems like an absurd undertaking, but this is only at first glance. In fact, Catalonia has been mastering the craft beer market for 10 years. We’ll tell you where to find the best beer oases in Gaudí and Dali .

Spain is officially a wine kingdom. For many centuries in a row, vineyards have been painstakingly cultivated here, they do not disdain tasting in the morning, they discuss, love and are proud, they take tourists to the cellars and, in all seriousness, they treat many diseases with red and white. But you can’t do without beer either: in Spain it’s so hot for most of the year that you simply can’t do without a refreshing “caña”.
Catalonia, as you know, is a region with separatist intentions, and when the booze boom finally reached it, everyone rushed to brew and pour, master new technologies, buy microbreweries and think of something else to add to beer to stand out from the neighbors- brewers.
Barcelona is a landmark city in this regard. More than a hundred manufacturers are based here, and a beer festival is held annually, which attracts brewers from all over Spain and other countries of the world, including Russia.
Craft Beer Institute (El Instituto de la Cerveza Artesana), Poble Sec
The local Hogwarts Brasserie is enticingly close to the Apollo nightclub and the former El Molino cabaret. Mastodons opened at the beginning of the twentieth century, when no one around had ever heard of craft, and here they were already sorcerers with might and main: they created their own technology, invented recipes and taught the younger generation. Until now, it is primarily an educational institution: here you can become a qualified brewer, learn all the subtleties, meet professionals in their field and buy your own microbrewery. The institute has an Abirradero bar with more than 40 types of beer, and for 20-30 euros you will be given a tour of the production with direct tasting and light snacks. Of the most original varieties to sample – coffee and milk stout.
“Here you can buy excellent quality raw materials for your own production: malt and hops of various varieties at very attractive prices.”
Homo Sibaris Izakaya (Sants)
Rumor has it that this is one of the most hospitable bars with its own production in the Sants station area. The surroundings, frankly, are not the most touristy, but the institution has an original format: a typical Catalan beer bar “in the area” with traditional Japanese snacks on the menu. So if you find yourself near the station, check out the local craft beer on tap, have a few words with friendly bartenders and continue your journey with peace of mind.
“Original concept! Iberian beer and Japanese snacks. Very nice and unique place.”
BrewDog (l’Eixample)
Two British punk friends who settled in Barcelona started their business in 2007, at the dawn of craft in Catalonia. Now they are the winners of numerous competitions in the art of brewing and open their pubs around the world. The bar is located near the old town, in the modernist district of Eixample, and is a must to visit: more than 20 original varieties and all excellent. If your eyes run wide, ask the bartender for help. Bolder! And be sure to check out El Punk Ipa and Dead Pony.
“The food and drink here is awesome! The choice of craft beer is very decent, I especially liked Elvis Juice and grapefruit IPA 7.2%. We took burgers, fries and wings for a snack and did not regret it.”
Afterlife bar (Gracia)
Finally, at least someone thought of making a bar not only fashionable and crafty, but also equipping it with powerful Wi-Fi, a huge screen, game consoles and decorating it in cyberpunk style. It is a paradise for lovers of board games, virtual sports, video games and cosplay. You can come in a whole horde, bring your games and stick out, washing it all down with decent craft beer. Luckily, you don’t have to be a geek – everyone is welcome in this bar. You will have to walk a little from the center towards Mount Tibidabo, Gracia district, but it’s worth it.
“You know, sometimes you go somewhere and immediately feel at ease. This is exactly the case with the Afterlife bar. Despite the fact that the bar seems to be for geeks, in fact, there is such a cool atmosphere here that any person will feel at home.
La Cervesera Artesana (Gracia)
As soon as you feel your neck numb from constantly looking at the incredible houses of Gaudi on Paseo de Gracia, head to Cervesera Artesana to relieve your fatigue. You will be in capable hands – they have been brewing their own beer since 1996 years old You can try more than a dozen varieties of local foam, and then polish this business with foreign crafts. For more sophisticated guests, an original attraction is provided: a sensory-psychological tasting of beers to various classical music in order to learn from your own experience how our brain changes the palette of sensations depending on the combination of melodies, rhythms and taste.
“My trip to La Cervesera Artesana was very successful. I wanted to try everything in there! And Jeff, an apprentice of the master brewer, showed me the equipment and told me about the beer production process.”
CatBar (El Born)
In one of the Gothic alleys near the church of Santa Maria del Mar, there is a bar for those who drink beer but do not eat meat. CatBar has everything you need to be happy: 9 taps and 50 bottled varieties, delicious veggie burgers, hummus, vegetable snacks, bravas fries, and cat pictures everywhere. Despite the small size of the bar, musicians often perform here, so it is unlikely that it will be convenient to have quiet intimate conversations.
“If you are a vegan and love to drink beer, then this is your place! In the bar, you can taste both local craft beer and first-class imported beer. Awesome!
BierCab (l’Eixample)
This bar has everything! There are 30 types of one draft craft, and 500 more in bottles. Not the best option if you don’t know how to quickly make a choice, but here you can quickly upgrade from a neophyte to an amateur. There are two large screens hanging on the wall, on which information about the origin and flavors of each type of beer appears online, how much is left in the keg and in what container it is best to serve it. In addition, bartenders who know their business will always come to your aid. You can, like me, take a chance and order “something unusual” (I was given something acid-mango, but it could have been worse). For beer, there are very decent tapas, jamon, hamburgers, spicy and spicy, salty and sweet – everything your soul wants after an impressive tasting.
“If I lived nearby, I would hang out there all the time! But it’s for the best, otherwise I would have left half of all my savings there … BierCab is a great bar.”
Barcino Brewers (Gotico)
One day, three friends decided to brew beer right on the terrace of their apartment in the Gothic Quarter. At first they made beer for themselves and their friends in the area, but then rumors about the quality of the drink spread throughout the center of Barcelona, and for 8 years now, friends have been creating an urban craft and naming it after the most interesting areas of the city. Connoisseurs advise trying El Bogatell Blonde, named after one of Barcelona’s beaches. There are no trendy fruit flavors in it – it is based on classic wheat and special yeast from the southern slopes of Germany. But what a feeling!
“For me, the main thing in a drink is a balanced taste. Barcino make a light, flavorful and not overly rich beer. Their Raval IPA pairs well with fish starters like tuna tapas. It is very convenient that any of the varieties can be ordered directly on the site.
Barcelona Beer Company (l’Eixample)
Another decent craft bar near the metro Universitat. Lovers and professionals alike appreciate this place for honesty and quality – only ecological materials are used in the production, and the water for beer comes straight from the mountain rivers of the Catalan natural reserve Montseny. The pretentiousness of the concept, I must say, is softened by funny names. Experts recommend checking out Cerdos Voladores pale ale, which translates to “flying pigs”.
