If you’re yearning for a serene retreat from the bustling city streets of Barcelona, look no further than the enchanting Botanic Gardens. Nestled in the picturesque setting of Montjuïc Hill, this green oasis provides a tranquil space for you to unwind and discover the diverse flora from around the world, all in one captivating location.
One sunny Sunday morning I found myself with nothing planned and decided to make a visit the Barcelona botanic gardens called Jardí Botànic which are only about 10 minutes walk from the Olympic Stadium.
I had a little difficulty finding the entrance to the gardens because it is not that well signposted however we have provided a map below so hopefully you won’t have the same difficulties I had finding the way there.

The gardens offer an oasis of peace, tranquillity and beauty that I can’t put into words. Plants are truly little miracle workers, and here you will see them in all their glory. You will see plants creating flowers with stunningly vivid colours so pure I felt mesmerized. If you take the time to really look at each flower and not just glance at them, you will see the depth of pure natural colour crimsons, oranges, yellows along with other plants that create subtle colours like soft muted purples.
Colours are not the only thing you will marvel at. The air in the different zones of the Botanic gardens was filled with natural perfumes, sweet, soft, lemon, lavender and honey, scents that gave the colours an added dimension of reality.

The central part of the Botanic Gardens has a “bee house”. At first I could only hear a gentle buzz but later I saw them collecting the nectar from the pink blossoms in the trees.
My impression of bees up until this point had been that of noisy, frenetic creatures however these bees seemed to hardly make a sound, and they seemed so very peaceful as they went about their duties in a laid back manner.
After only a few minutes of walking around the Botanic Gardens I felt I had entered a Zen monastery, calm and peace and cleanliness. It is clear that the caretakers of these botanic gardens truly love these plants.
As you meander through the meticulously designed gardens, you’ll be transported to different continents as each section showcases the unique plant life native to various regions, including Mediterranean, Californian, South African, Australian, and Chilean landscapes. This global tour of flora is not only fascinating but also serves as a gentle reminder of our planet’s incredible biodiversity.

Barcelona Botanical Garden – a natural amphitheater on the hill of Montjuïc.

Barcelona Botanic Garden (Jardi Botanic de Barcelona) is located on Montjuic, on a slope that used to be occupied by the city’s landfill. It is located at the marina, between the historic fortress of Montjuic (with the MNAC museum) and the Olympic Stadium.
The territory of the garden is arranged in steps, like a huge green amphitheatre. The natural complex occupies 14 hectares. It has eight zones delimited by a labyrinth of paths into 87 local areas with characteristic vegetation.
The garden was created by a group of landscape architects and gardeners of various specializations; work began in 1991. Mount Montjuic has become a topographical model with natural landscapes for the flora of different world regions. In the lower part of the exposition, a lake was placed, several artificial streams and waterfalls were arranged. Due to the abundance of water, it was possible to create an area with a lower temperature and grow plants that require a cooler climate.

The main thematic areas of the Botanical Garden
In the “Australian” area of the garden you can see cypresses, acacias and junipers. In the “California forest” grow pines, oaks and strawberries, chaparral blooms. The smallest, but also the most picturesque zone belongs to the plants of South Africa: evergreens, succulents predominate here. In the Chilean zone, the landscapes are varied: the thorny deciduous Espinal forest is adjacent to the bright flora of mountain ranges and huge echinopsis cacti.
The plants of the Mediterranean basin are divided into four subregions: Western Mediterranean (including the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands), Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa, Canaries. In a separate pavilion of the garden, a collection of unique bonsai of 210 specimens is exhibited.

Barcelona Botanical Garden covers an area of 14 hectares. Here you can see the typical vegetation of six different zones with a Mediterranean climate. The beautiful park between Montjuic Castle and the Olympic Stadium contains typical forests and shrubs from southern Australia, South Africa, Chile, California, the Canary Islands and three Mediterranean zones.
The Mediterranean climate is characterized by dry, hot summers. The rains fall mainly in the winter, which is why it is also called the winter rainy climate. This climatic zone is found not only in the Mediterranean, but also in other regions that are located at about the same latitude as the Mediterranean.
The Barcelona Botanical Garden was opened in 1999 to preserve rare plant species. About 1,500 species of plants grow in the Botanical Garden. Since the park is still quite new, most of the plants are relatively young.
Regardless of the time of year, visitors can enjoy walking through the vegetation zones of the five Mediterranean regions of the world (Australia, Chile, California, South Africa and the Mediterranean).
During this walk through the botanical gardens in Barcelona, you can enjoy the variety of plants of the Mediterranean climate. Eucalyptus, bottle tree, acacia, oleander, argan or cedar are some of the species you will find here.
