More than 200 kilometers of bike paths wind through Barcelona, making it easy and fun to visit by bike.

Public transportation in Barcelona is cheap, easy and efficient. But as a visitor, you probably want to be out and about rather than stuck underground on the metro!

Biking around Barcelona is a great way to experience the city. Not only do you get some exercise and fresh air, but the views of the city whizzing by from your bike are unbeatable.

Ready to bike around the Catalan capital? Here’s where you can rent bikes in Barcelona, and what to know before you set out.

What to know before you rent bikes in Barcelona

Cycling lanes in Barcelona are clearly marked and often found on wide, main roads such as the Diagonal and Avenida Meridiana. More grid-like neighborhoods such as the Eixample are best for biking thanks to their more open layout, while navigating the narrow streets of areas like the Gothic Quarter on two wheels can be cumbersome.

Much of Barcelona proper is quite flat, making it easy for cyclists of all skill levels to explore. But if you’re looking for more challenging terrain within city limits, consider biking up Montjuic. The Passeig de les Aigües trail just 20 minutes outside the city is another fantastic option for mountain biking that offers spectacular views.

You might spot stations of bright red rental bicycles throughout the city as part of the Bicing network. However, Bicing is only available to locals, so unless you have proof of residence in Barcelona, you won’t be able to use this system.

No worries, though—there are plenty of places where visitors can rent bikes in Barcelona!

Barcelona 2023 – Bicing – Barcelona city bicycles

Barcelona’s city bike system
is called Bicing.

Bicing is not available for tourists, only for residents of Barcelona.

Tourists can rent bikes by the hour or day from the many Barcelona bike rental stores.

Bicing has become a more important part of Barcelona’s public transport system.

Barcelona city council launched the city bike system El Bicing – pronounced “bee-zing” – in 2007. Electric Bicing bikes were added in 2016 and are now widely available.

Barcelona’s Bicing city bike system is only available to residents of Barcelona and is intended as a public transport service for short bicycle journeys of maximum 30 minutes in duration.

For this reason it is not available as a sightseeing bike option.

Tourists visiting Barcelona can rent bikes at the many tourist bike rental companies who rent bikes at very affordable hourly rates.

Bicing has become very popular with Barcelona residents and over 120,000 subscribers signed up. When Bicing in Barcelona launched in 2007, there were just 750 “bicing” bikes available at 50 pick-up/drop off points in the city located mostly near Metro stations and municipal parking places.

In 2012 there were 420 bicing stations and 6,000 Bicing bikes available and in 2012 around 40.000 daily journeys were made which comes to around eleven million journeys a year.

The objective of Bicing was and is to encourage Barcelona residents to make short trips by bicycle to help reduce the number of cars circulating in Barcelona, so many of the Bicing stations are by metro stations, parks and car parks.

Bicing is financed both by users and income from the implementation of green-area parking regulations, which was also designed to encourage cleaner transport in Barcelona. Bicing prices includes a third party insurance if bicing users cause damage to others.

A paid up subscriber of the bicing system gets a personal bicing card in the post or at the bicing office. The Bicing card is used to release and deliver bicing bikes from the automatic bicing stands around Barcelona. When a bicing bike is released, the bicing user then has 30 minutes free to get to their destination and drop off the bike at another bicing pick up/drop off location.

The first half hour of bicing is free and then it costs a small fee for each additional 30 minute period until you reach the maximum allowed time of 2 hours in total.

After that there is a penalty charge per hour for failing to drop off the bicing bike.

After three penalty charges your bicing account will be closed.

This user revenue generates around 25% of the total cost of the Barcelona bicing system.

Despite occasional frustration, when bicing racks might be full or when bikes are out of order, Bicing is a huge success and Barcelona is fast climbing up the world list of top bicycle friendly cities.

Bicycling is clean, healthy and quiet and Bicing has introduced the use of a bike as a daily transport system to many residents of Barcelona.

A big and obvious benefit of using the Bicing system rather than owning your own bicycle, is that Bicing users have access to hundreds of bikes all over Barcelona, instead of owning one bike, which might have been stolen.

Sunday to Thursdays:
Bicing stands open all day from except from midnight to 05.00.
During the night you can only drop-off bicing bikes, not pick them up.

Friday and Saturday:
Bicing stands  open all hours of day for both pìck-up and drop-off of bikes.
On certain days during special events like big festivals the Bicing is open all night.

The bicing bike of Barcelona have 3 gears, an adjustable saddle and lights that switch on automatically at dusk. The operator of El Bicing in Barcelona is Clearchannel, who also manage successful Smartbike systems in other European cities including Oslo, Stockholm and Lyon.

The Bicing cards are on sale online. Visit the bicing website (in Spanish and Catalan only) has information about current and future Bicing locations and a real time map showing how many bicing bikes and parking places are available at each location.

Bicycles in Barcelona – Travel Guide Barcelona TM

Bicycles in Barcelona are one of the most relevant means of transportation. Bicycles are a useful form of transport in every sense: in terms of air purity, traffic jams, health.

Why cycling is so popular in Barcelona

Biking in Barcelona is possible, necessary and easy. The city will sparkle for you with new colors if, having rented a bicycle, you go on a sightseeing tour not on foot, but on an iron friend.

The city is well equipped for cycling:

  • sloping slopes for accessing the road from the sidewalks;
  • almost every corner has iron handrails for parking;
  • and, more recently, a special “carril bici”, a separate bike path that covers almost the entire city.

You will get a special drive by riding on “carril bici”, because neither cars nor pedestrians will interfere with you. Speed, beauty around and Barcelona. Emotions can make your head spin, but don’t forget that bicycles in Barcelona are subject to the same traffic rules as the rest of the transport.

OUR ADVICE. To save time and money, we recommend booking bicycles, motorcycles and scooters in advance. You can do this on the trusted site BikesBooking.com .

Important Rules

When you rent a bike, don’t forget to remember the rules of the road: traffic lights, intersections, respectful behavior on the road.

The arrow on the bike path indicates the direction of traffic, for example, on Diagonal Avenue or Gran Via Street, you must go parallel to the movement of cars, otherwise you will find yourself against the general flow of cyclists.

Bicycles are very common in Barcelona, so don’t be intimidated by their abundance on the roads. The danger is represented by those tourists who, worrying that they are in the way, begin to huddle against the curbs. Cycling behavior in Barcelona should be subject to the most common rules of courtesy on the road, nothing more.

Rain is rare in Barcelona, but sunny, bright skies, exotic plants and sea views are always present. Just imagine: a rented bike, a flat path, the sun, a wonderful opportunity to stop near any building you like, take pictures, buy a nice little thing, smile at the people of Barcelona passing by, feel like a real Catalan for a minute. Unforgettable emotions will give you a bike in Barcelona.

As in any big city in Barcelona there are thieves, so be on the lookout, do not leave your friend unattended, even chained up with a castle. After all, for every lock there are wire cutters and an observant thief.

A secure lock and vigilance will help you avoid mishaps and not spoil your experience of a trip to stunning Barcelona by bike.

Choose – either a reliable lock, or keep your iron horse under supervision.
