Discover Spain

In Spain, the concept of la vida buena—the good life—is a driving force. Richly layered cultures thrive here among sweeping landscapes that inspired Cervantes, Dalí, and Hemingway. The jagged cliffs of the Costa Brava spill into the Mediterranean. Sun-kissed white villages and Moorish castles laze under Andalusian skies. Lively traditions and cuisines embody the robust beauty of Basque country. On a VBT Spain bike tour, you’ll find that the good life is the best life as you slow down and experience Spain to its fullest.

From the mind-bending architecture of Gaudí in Barcelona to the world-class galleries of Madrid that play home to masterpieces by Goya, Picasso and other iconic Spanish artists, Spain’s cities are an art lover’s dream. The sprawling Alhambra in Granada, the otherworldly spires of La Sagrada Familia that have been under construction for over a century in Barcelona, Cordoba’s unparalleled Mezquita—the seemingly endless wealth of cultural attractions is almost overwhelming.

Equally expansive is Spain’s famed cuisine. From tapas shared with friends in a casual bar to a five course meal in a Michelin-starred restaurant, there’s a wealth of flavors to be discovered throughout the many regions of this gastronomic paradise. Whether you’re sampling fresh pressed olive oil or sipping wine in a centuries-old cellar, your tastebuds will never be bored on a Spain bike tour.

  • Explore beautiful Pamplona and enjoy the weekly juevintxo event, a Thursday-night feast of tapas.
  • Peek into the personal life of artist Salvador Dalí during a visit to his home at Púbol Castle.
  • Explore the famed Alhambra Palace, a breathtaking architectural wonder.
  • Follow trails on the Way of St. James, an 800-km stretch of path used by pilgrims.

Spanish Art

Explore the surreal Dalí Theater and Museum in Figueres, wander the seemingly endless halls of the Museo del Prado (which houses over 8,600 paintings and 700 sculptures), or take a leisurely stroll in Gaudí’s Park Güell. In Spain art is all around you, as are the remarkable landscapes that inspired these masters.

Flamenco

Take in a Flamenco performance or try your hand at this traditional style of dance. Evocative, passionate, and mesmerizing, this iconic art form is a must see while in Andalucia, its region of origin. Since the 18th century, locals and visitors alike have been entranced by the beauty of Flamenco music and its beautiful dance accompaniment.

Food and Wine

Paella in Valencia, gazpacho in Andalucia, patatas bravas in Madrid… Spain’s cuisine varies from region to region, but is invariably delicious and rooted in local produce and traditional recipes. Sample olive oil on a family farm or partake in a wine tasting in an ancient cellar to further your appreciation of the finer aspects of Spanish cuisine.

Spain’s eight best cycling routes.

Spain in Russian

Cycling allows you to combine physical activities, outdoor activities, the opportunity to see amazing landscapes and cover more new places in a single trip in a short period of time. Spain is an ideal country for this active type of tourism due to its excellent climate, which gives many sunny days a year, and convenient road infrastructure. Whether it will be a one day trip or it will turn into a long trip around the country is up to you. We choose a comfortable two-wheeled horse and set off to discover the best cycling routes in Spain. Don’t forget to get the right equipment!

Ruta de la Plata

This route intersects with sections of the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route and the ancient Via de la Plata. The route starts in Seville and ends in Gijón, crosses four autonomous communities and seven provinces of Spain, for a total of 800 kilometers of roads. Along the way, you can see special signs in the form of yellow arrows, which will help even beginners not to get lost, looking at the beautiful landscapes that open up on each section. The Ruta de la Plata route can be taken both on a mountain bike through natural paths, and on a road bike, driving along paved roads. The path passes through beautiful cities rich in history such as Seville, Merida, Cáceres, Placencia, Bejar, Zamora, Benavente, León, Oviedo and Gijón. The best time of the year to take this route is in spring, when the fields and pastures of Extremadura, Castile and León and Asturias are filled with vibrant colors and the fresh scents of nature.

Transpirenaica

Transpirenaica is one of the most famous routes in Spain with a fairly high level of difficulty that requires advance preparation. The route, about 800 kilometers long, runs through the Pyrenees from east to west, from the Mediterranean to the Cantabrian Sea. It starts in the municipality of Llança (Catalonia) and ends in Fuenterrabia (Basque Country) and lasts about 16-18 days. The route is intended for mountain bikers, as most of it is on rough roads with a lot of rocks. Travelers note that leg fatigue is compensated by the joy of being in beautiful wild mountainous areas and in the authentic atmosphere of small villages.

Vía verde de Ojos Negros

Vía verde de Ojos Negros is currently the longest “Green Route” in Spain. “Greenways” are old railways surrounded by nature, which have been turned into convenient routes that have become popular with walkers and cyclists. The path passes between the city of Teruel (Aragon) and Sagunto (Valencia). A total of 160 kilometers of the route is divided into two different sections. The first section, which follows the line of the Sierra Menera Railway, passes through the Havalambre and Goudar mountain ranges and the Giloka Valley in the province of Teruel. The second part descends to the famous agricultural area of Horta de Valencia on the Mediterranean coast, passing through the province of Castellón, leading to the Valencian municipality of Alhimia de Alfara. The advantage of this route is that most of the road passes downhill, which makes life much easier for cyclists, especially those who do not have much experience in this kind of travel.

El Tunel de Engaña

The most unusual cycling route for thrill-seekers runs through the unfinished railway tunnel that connects the provinces of Burgos and Cantabria through the Cantabrian mountains. The route is marked with an average level of difficulty with a duration of no more than one day. But for this day, travelers are waiting for an unforgettable experience from a trip inside several abandoned tunnels and the bright greenery of nature in open areas. Adventure lovers will be able to use their imagination and imagine how successful this railway could have been if its construction had not been suspended.

Ruta Costa da Morte

From A Coruña to Finisterre by bike, this route is considered one of the most beautiful in Spain. It runs past cliffs, ports, lighthouses and beaches, allowing you to enjoy the exquisite gastronomy of the Galicia region at stops. During a 4-5 day trip, travelers can see such unusual places as the rocky peninsula of Cabo Vilán, the Ezaro waterfalls, the Dolmen de Dombate cultural heritage museum. Ruta Costa da Morte is a route of medium difficulty, as it combines flat areas with fairly steep slopes.

La TransAndalus

The most interesting route to get to know the region of Andalusia is the TransAndalus, a cycling route of more than 2,000 kilometers that passes through eight provinces of the region. It is heavy enough for one trip, but allows you to start and finish it on almost any stretch, so many travelers prefer to go through it in parts. Its landscape diversity is astounding, combining beaches, mountains, natural reserves such as the Sierra Nevada or Doñana, small villages and large historic cities such as Seville, Granada and Córdoba. It is worth noting that most of the route runs along dirt roads and rural trails, so it requires a mountain bike and good physical fitness.

Via Verde de Girona

One of the most famous routes in Catalonia, which goes along the old railway lines connecting Girona with Olot. It runs along a flat road without sharp descents and ascents, so it is ideal for cycling with children. The most iconic point of the route is the Garrocha volcanic zone, which has a unique ecological significance for Catalonia.

El Camino de Levante

Caravaca de la Cruz (Murcia), along with Santiago de Compostela, Rome, Jerusalem and Santo Toribio de Liebana, is one of the five places in the world to which the Vatican has granted the right to be considered a pilgrimage. The road leading from the city of Orihuela in the province of Alicante to the Basilica of Santuario Vera Cruz, which is the final destination of the pilgrimage, is called El Camino de Levante. This route is also loved by cyclists for the absence of sharp descents and ascents, the presence of direction signs and wonderful landscapes. In the initial section, the path runs along a convenient walking and cycling road that runs parallel to the Segura River. Then the landscape changes, leading travelers to another “Green Way” at the site of an old railway. The route is considered easy enough, allowing you to go on the road with children.
